Ok, the voting is over, and by its results, the winner of the Cycle 3 is SubCM by Dumb Sir. Congratulations! Your set will be added to the Hall of Fame soon. And now, we're moving straight to the...

Cycle Four - Magearna

I don't think that here's too much I need to tell about Magearna. Y'all know that this Pokémon is amazing thanks to its typing, stats, impressive movepool, and the ability in Soul-Heart. All these factors even produce some discussions about Magearna's healthiness for the metagame. Ok, Magearna already boasts a ton of viable sets but there is definitely a potential for even more of them. Post some cool sets here guys!

Reserving Choice Scarf

Magearna @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Fleur Cannon
- Volt Switch
- Ice Beam / Flash Cannon
- Focus Blast / Hidden Power Fire

Scarf Magearna has been popping up throughout the generation in tours and ladder. Although still slow even with Scarf, it outspeeds upto base 110s giving it the ability to surprise and snipe many threats in OU that outspeed and Ko regular Magearna. Garchomp, LandoT and Medicham are most notable examples. Its wide range of moves allows it to be customisable to what your team needs to revenge. Ice Beam ensures Ohko on LandoT while being good neutral in general, while Flash Cannon makes for a better neutral, making Soul Heart sweeps more accessible. Focus Blast hits Kartana, Heatran and Ferrothorn hard on switch or revenge, while Fire nails M.Scizor and has benefits of accuracy vs Kart and Ferro

EVs: 216 HP / 228 Def / 16 SpD / 48 Spe
Bold Nature

- Pain Split
- Calm Mind

Phys Def Magearna trades a more SpA or SpDef spread to take on a plethora of threats like Bulu, Kart, Mawile, Lucha, Lop etc. Shuca's cool to let you better handle stuff like EPower KyuB, Lando and Garchomp. Other items like a Z-Crystal, Lefties or a pinch berry are fine for additional breaking power or longevity, especially if you have a Bulu on the team already. It's just really nice role compression in one slot for certain teams.

Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shift Gear
- Iron Head
- Fleur Cannon
- Thunderbolt / Focus Blast

S/o to Prisoner952 for the set. Iron Head SG Mag serves as a cool lure for the likes of AV Gear, Bulu and Chansey. While you can’t immediately 1v1 them, after a Shift Gear they start becoming easier to handle. The set also has Weakness Policy, so if you do get hit by a stray HP Fire your Iron Heads get stronger. The nice thing about Fairium though is that you have two ways to circumvent common checks—Twinkle Tackle or Iron Head.

Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Trick Room
- Fleur Cannon
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt

Magearna is a great pick on dedicated Trick Room teams as it functions well as both a TR setter thanks to its solid bulk and a TR abuser thanks to its great offensive capabilities and low speed, which is very useful role compression.
TR also has a niche over Shift Gear on teams that aren't dedicated to TR in that it outspeeds mons that would otherwise outspeed +2 Magearna, like scarf Kartana, scarf Greninja, Swampert in Rain and Unburden Hawlucha. Not having to invest in speed also allows Magearna to invest more into its bulk while still hitting equally hard, and unlike Shift Gear TR can also be abused by slow teammates, doesn't care about webs or paralysis as much and can't be hazed.

Iapapa Berry is a handy option for SG Gears on more offensively inclined teams that allows it to take a strong hit such as EQ or whatever, recover 50% and boost+KO something in a pinch. It’s also generally nice when Magearna gets worn down throughout the match as it means you can mess with anyone who lets you drop below 25%, potentially allowing Gears to set up for a cleanup later on. Generally a nice option if you need to use your Z slot on something else.

Magearna @ Ghostium Z
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shift Gear
- Calm Mind
- Shadow Ball
- Thunderbolt/Ice Beam/Fleur Cannon

This isn’t nearly as effective as Magearna’s other incredible Z-move sets, but it seeks to capitalize on Jirachi’s increased usage by luring it in, killing it with a strong Never-Ending Nightmare, and picking up a Soul-Heart boost. This is one of the few Magearna variants that isn’t too annoyed by Jirachi’s increased usage as a dedicated check to a bunch of special attackers.

+1 252 SpA Magearna Never-Ending Nightmare (160 BP) vs. 248 HP / 188+ SpD Jirachi: 396-468 (98.2 - 116.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

The set isn’t without its massive issues, however; while Shadow Ball gives it great neutral coverage it massively limits its super effective coverage and, as a result, many OHKOs and reliable 2HKOs, forcing it to make the tough choice between Fleur Cannon, Ice Beam, and Thunderbolt. But if you really hate SpDef Jirachi it’s one of its better lures because it can utterly demolish Jirachi and even play some mindgames with it. Shadow Ball also gives it something with which to hit Mega Lati@s, Mega Medicham, and Tapu Lele without committing to Fleur Cannon’s nasty drawbacks although Fleur trashes all of them if you run it. The Z-move can also do a hefty chunk to offensive Tran.

Substitute>Shift Gear with a bulkier spread and a Modest nature to guarantee the OHKO on Jirachi can be considered but it’s not as good imo.

Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shift Gear

This is a pretty cool set if you already have your Z-move spot taken up. With the help of Metronome, you can manage to kill stuff you probably couldn't with regular boltbeam Magearna such as Jirachi and Pex as well as plowing through teams easier when you are sweeping.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 222-262 (31.5 - 37.2%) -- 86.3% chance to 3HKO

252 SpA Charizard-Mega-Y Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Eviolite Chansey in Sun: 199-235 (28.3 - 33.4%) -- 0% chance to 3HKO

Yes, specs fleur is stronger than Zard Y's sun-boosted fire blast.

Specs Magearna is a really solid lure to a lot of switch-ins and usual counterplay to most other Mage sets. Fat steels like Heatran, Ferro, Mega Aggron, Celesteela, and even opposing Mage can find themselves getting 2hko'd or even ohko'd by the right move. Commonplace grounds that try to switch in can find themselves getting ohko'd by Fleur Cannon, which is ridiculously strong when backed by a specs. Even the likes of Zapdos and Mega Swampert can get ohko'd by Fleur, or Mega Venusaur (the "magearna hard counter") getting 2hko'd by Flash Cannon. That's how goddamn strong it is. The sheer strength of it alleviates prediction too, as you can guess wrong and still do a ton of damage to stuff like Lando-T with focus blast (almost does half to scarf sets).

The speed is for Skarmory, most fat Heatrans, and Mawile. Why Mawile, you ask? Your natural bulk and sucker punch resistance, along with stupid power on steel STAB lets you revenge kill it. Put it on voltturn, it's nuts and actually viable.

I tested this team a while ago in November/December 2018, but it's honestly in a better position now than before. Mons like Rotom-W and Fini are free turns to blow something up, and plenty of Magearna are weird slower sets like cm split or heart swap that just die to Specs Mage.

My vote is for Metrenome. I have used this set with 3 attacks (Flash cannon + Thunderbolt + Focus Blast) and 1v1 AV Magearna with Iron Head. I usually run a bit of bulk (200 HP / 56 SpA / 252 Spe), but this takes so many people by surprise. By the time they know what's going on, Mag is already at +2 with 6 Metrenome hits under its belt.
