Tetrabilities

Tetrabilities

Basculin was once the only Pokémon with four possible abilities, due to its two forms. Then, Meowstic did the same, using its two genders. Finally, USUM gave Rockruff a fourth possible ability, without even a visual difference. But what if the same was done to all Pokémon? What if they all had four possible abilities? Are you annoyed that the Bronzor line is the only line that gets to choose whether or not it wants to Levitate? Frustrated that certain abilities make sense on a Pokémon, but their ability slots are full? Depressed that a Pokémon has no chance to shine because of its poor abilities? Bored by the fact that many Pokémon only have one viable ability, or only one ability at all? If so, this may be the pet mod for you!

In this pet mod, Pokémon are given extra abilities, until they each have four, like Rockruff, Meowstic and Basculin. This is done by slate, and if you want, you can give prevos different abilities from their fully evolved forms. Clones of abilities and new abilities that call status moves upon entry are allowed. Feel free to shake up the meta, but avoid creating crazily centralising things. We are trying to add, not remove, diversity. Flavour is the most important thing with ability choice, but competitive aspects should be considered to avoid Pokémon who are already seen in OU/Ubers from having their old ability completely outclassed by their new one or vice versa, as we are trying to add diversity, not remove it.

Rules:

Mechanic
: Every Pokémon may choose between four abilities, which are assigned by slate.

Clauses: OU clauses (Or Uber clauses for the Uber version)
Bans: OU bans (Or Uber bans for the Uber version)
Unbans: None.

Strategy:

Pokémon which formerly only had a single ability now have far more options, and therefore, versatility. This especially true for Pokemon whose abilities were redundant (like Rotom-Fan and Stunfisk) or simply bad (like Slaking, Regigigas and Archeops). The increase in viable abilities means some more mind games and guessing, which makes scouting more valuable. Trace especially becomes better as better abilities are available and scouting is a useful tool. Archetypes like weather and terrain abuse are likely to improve as the associated abilities are likely to be spread around, giving those archetypes more options.

Q&A:

Q
: How is Ash-Greninja treated?
A: Battle Bond is considered Greninja’s third ability for the purposes of this pet mod, so it only needs one more, but its prevos need two more.

Q: Do megas and primals get more abilities?
A: Megas and primals keep to only one ability, as it’s their base forms that get to choose abilities.

Q: Are custom abilities allowed?
A: Custom abilities are allowed if they’re clones of normal abilities or call a status move upon entry. Consider the effect on the meta they will have though.

Q: How does voting work?
A: At the end of a slate, vote for up to three submissions for each line. You may not vote for yourself in first position.

TEMPLATE HERE

Pokemon/Line:
Old Abilities:
New Abilities:
Reasoning:

Pokemon/Line: Meowth
Old Abilities: Pickup / Technician | Unnerve
New Abilities: Stakeout
Reasoning: In it's Pokedex entries, it's known as a Pokemon who loves to look for coins. It's nocturnal and at night, will find shiny objects that can range from different things. Stakeout shows it could wait or is watchful for those objects.

Pokemon/Line: Alolan Meowth
Old Abilities: Pickup / Technician | Rattled
New Abilities: Pride (Queenly Majesty / Dazzling clone)
Reasoning: Again, Pokedex entries, state that it has a very proud nature. I thought of giving it Queenly Majesty, but it didn't quite fit. So I just renamed it, and ta-da, we have a new clone.

Pokemon/Line: Skitty
Old Abilities: Cute Charm / Normalize | Wonder Skin
New Abilities: Fairyartisan (Steelworker clone for Fairy types.)
Reasoning: I was thinking in how to increase it's viability, honestly. I saw it actually gets Play Rough, and thought therefore, it should learn to abuse it. I gave it this ability and now it doesn't really need Normalize.

Pokemon/Line: Glameow
Old Abilities: Limber (Thick Fat) / Own Tempo | Keen Eye (Defiant)
New Abilities: Tough Claws.
Reasoning: It's a cat. That's why. That's it. Also, it's a good ability.

Couple questions:
1) So we can only add new abilities?
2) What about ability tiers? We don't want some Huge Power Archen or something.
3) More may be added.

As for question 1, yes, the idea is to only add, not replace or remove abilities. While that means some mon benefit less than others, you can compensate with the abilities you choose to give them.

Meowth
Pick Up / Technician / Unnerve / Defiant

Persian
Limber / Technician / Unnerve / Defiant

Meowth-Alola
Pick Up / Technician / Rattled / Competitive

Persian-Alola
Fur Coat / Technician / Rattled / Competitive

Cats are known to be competitive and sometimes even violent against each others. That’s what I tried to represent with those secret abilities. It also makes them pretty good defog denials in their respective tiers, especially normal Persian.

Skitty
Cute Charm / Normalize / Wonder Skin / Delicate*

Delcatty
Cute Charm / Normalize / Wonder Skin / Delicate*

Delicate: Fluffy clone — Takes half damage from special moves, but takes double damage from Water moves.

You know how cats don’t like water? Welp, now we have a custom ability to represent it. This ability can also help Delcatty to be a more effective utility pivot, with moves like Heal Bell and Wish.

Glameow
Limber / Own Tempo / Keen Eye / Cute Charm

Purugly
Thick Fat / Own Tempo / Defiant / Intimidate

Glameow mostly tries to attract other pokemons, while Purugly litteraly sits on them and claims their nests (source: Pokedex). I think those abilities really represents these pokemon and how they interact with others.

Sorry for double-posting, but when is this slate coming to an end? I don't want this to die after only two weeks :(

Sorry about that. I've had connection issues recently and was hoping for more submissions. I'll try get my own sub up today and then start the voting

Kantonese Meowth-line: Glint Chaser (Motor Drive clone for Steel)

Reasoning: Meowth collect shiny coins and cats chase laser pointers. This plays into Persian's speedy reputation and gives it an unusual immunity it can use to partner with fairies.

Alolan Meowth-line: Queenly Majesty -> Thick Fat

Reasoning: Female cats are called queens. Also, Alolan Meowth are pampered and spoiled. When they evolve, they look like Garfield had too much lasagna and gain new defensive capabilities.

Skitty-line: Fur Coat

Reasoning: Delcatty looks like it is wearing a fur collar and it could do with a powerful ability.

Glameow-line: Spring Loaded (Stamina clone for speed) -> Intimidate

Reasoning: Glameow has a curly tail like a spring and it becomes mean when it evolves, giving it better defenses.

You may now vote

(Sorry about the oddity of how I posted these. I always struggle on mobile)

First of all, I'd like to apologise for the excessive delays. Long story short, I had some connection issues that should no longer be a problem.

So, onto results!

Shoopz_Whisper won with Kantonese Meowth and Alolan Meowth. I won with Smitty and Gravity Monkey won with Glameow.

Feel free to discuss sets and effect on the meta. Meanwhile:

Slate 2: To the Dogs

Growlithe-line

Houndour-line

Elektrike-line

Poochyena-line

Growlithe
Intimidate / Flash Fire / Justified / Dauntless*

Arcanine
Intimidate / Flash Fire / Justified / Evil Ward*

Dauntless* - Suction Cups clone
Evil Ward* - Sap Sipper variant that grants immunity to Dark and Ghost attacks and raises Attack by 1 stage if targeted by one

Justification: Growlithe is described as being fearless in the face of foes, so I gave it Dauntless which prevents it from being forced to switch out as if it would stand up to any opponent even if they attempted to scare or knock it out. Arcanine is based on the Asian Guardian Lion statues that are meant to protect against evil and spirits, so I gave it Evil Ward which allows it to protect its team against Dark and Ghost types while boosting its strength if one tries to attack it.
Competitive: Growlithe's viability likely isn't helped by its new ability, though Arcanine can use Evil Ward in RU to switch into Dark and Ghost type attacks from Pokemon like Honchkrow, Umbreon, Mandibuzz, Cofagrigus, and Hoopa. Umbreon and Mandibuzz sets running only Foul Play or Knock Off are completely walled, only being able to Toxic Arcanine.

Houndour
Early Bird / Flash Fire / Unnerve / Intimidate

Houndoom

Early Bird / Flash Fire / Unnerve / Toxicraft*

Toxicraft* - Steelworker clone that boosts Poison-type attacks

Justification: Houndour is described as making eerie howls to draw attention to its pack, which could be likened to intimidation. Houndoom gets Toxicraft which boosts its Poison attacks, its Pokedex states it spews fire mixed with poison.
Competitive: Intimidate helps to mitigate Houndour's low physical bulk in LC, potentially giving it a chance to set up. Houndoom gains a Poison pseudo-STAB that allows Sludge Bomb to hit NU Fairy-type Pokemon like Mega Audino, Comfey, and Aromatisse harder, though Hidden Power Steel still hits Diancie harder.

Electrike
Static / Lightningrod / Minus / Speed Boost

Manectric

Static / Lightningrod / Minus / Speed Boost

Justification
: Both Pokemon are described as being very fast. Manectric can relieve muscle soreness with it own electricity, kind of allowing it to continue running at high speed.
Competitive: Manectric can now pass Speed boosts to its Mega, making it even more difficult to outspeed. However, its frailty means it is also risky to stay in accumulating boosts before going Mega.

Poochyena
Run Away / Quick Feet / Rattled / Strong Jaw

Mightyena
Intimidate / Quick Feet / Moxie / Strong Jaw

Justification: They're both called the Bite Pokemon but don't have an ability that boosts biting moves?
Competitive: Mightyena is still far outclassed by other Dark-types.

Growlithe
Intimidate / Flash Fire / Justified / Defiant

Arcanine

Intimidate / Flash Fire / Justified / Scrappy

Growlithe is brave and also protects it's territory, so if it is being intimidate, it makes sense to power itself up to try and beat its foe. Arcanine's Scrappy is an extension of how it learns Odor Sleuth, and it can now use Extremespeed and Close Combat with no fear of Ghost switch-ins.

Houndour
Early Bird / Flash Fire / Unnerve / Competitive

Houndoom

Early Bird / Flash Fire / Unnerve / Drought

Competitive is just a special version of Defiant, and makes sense with Houndour's statline. Drought for Houndoom gives it a few benefits- powering up its flames, making them hurt more, removing a Water weakness and for good synergy with its Mega's Solar Power. It's Psychic community can also be useful for safe Drought switch-ins.

Electrike
Static / Lightningrod / Minus / Motor Drive

Manectric

Static / Lightningrod / Minus / Electric Surge

Motor Drive just feels like it would fit with Electrike, as it power up its legs with electricity. Manectric is mentioned to create thunderclouds, and Electric Surge is close enough flavour-wise ignore how it's Terrain and not a weather thing. Besides Drizzle might be bad by making enemy Water types more of a threat.

Poochyena
Run Away / Quick Feet / Rattled / Guts

Mightyena

Intimidate / Quick Feet / Moxie / Guts

Besides the obvious Strong Jaw, Guts could be an interesting option for a general Atk boost. Slap a Flame Orb and you get a boost in power that's not just limited to bite moves.

Ugh. I really should just schedule to do this once a week so I don't get distracted.

First:

Growlithe-line

Pressure.

Arcanine is oddly described as legendary in the dex. So I gave it the ability most associated with multiple legendaries. With burn up, it can now attempt some stalling.

Houndour-line

Stakeout.

Being influenced by Cerberus, it needs a guarding ability and this one can nicely boost its damage output.

Elektrike-line

Tangling Hair.

It has a lot of spiky fur and this ability can add some more speed control.

Poochyena-line

Prankster. A very naughty dark type that could really do with a strong ability.

And now for voting.

Gone Fishing

This may be a challenge

Magikarp-line

Feabas-line

Tynamo-line

Wishiwashi

Feebas
Swift Swim / Oblivious / Adaptability / Very Ugly (Stench clone)
Milotic
Marvel Scale / Competitive / Cute Charm / Serene Grace
Justification
: Hi! Feebas is very ugly, but you should enjoy the battle anyway! Milotic, on the other hand, is quite the opposite, using its amazing beauty to calm conflict, Serene Grace is the obvious best flavor choice out of existing abilities.
Competitive: 60% Scald burn, 20% Ice Beam freeze. There aren't any other special moves that Milotic gets that really benefit from Serene Grace, and it's attack is so low that Body Slam + Waterfall paraflinch isn't really worth while.

Tynamo
Levitate / Surge Surfer / Sheer Force / Static
Eelektrik

Levitate / Surge Surfer / Sheer Force / Static
Eelektross

Levitate / Surge Surfer / Sheer Force / Relentless (Merciless clone, attacks always crit against Paralyzed targets.)
Justification: Surge Surfer makes sense because of it's magnetic levitation above the ground, similar to how Bullet Trains barely touch the track to reduce friction. Sheer Force to reflect it's aggressive nature. Static on the NFEs because of how much they shock and paralyze things. Relentless matches its hunting style, paralyzing something before attacking it.
Competitive: Surge Surfer can cause it to be used as a sweeper and fast revenge killer in Electric Terrain. Sheer Force pairs very well with it's great movepool, allowing it to be a hard hitting attacker, potentially going mixed. Relentless makes Eelektross a very threatening cleaner. When combined with para spreading support, as it will be able to out speed most paralyzed foes, and getting a 50% damage boost on top of that is kinda a big deal.

For this I am assuming that there will be an out of battle way to switch from Solo to School form?
Wishiwashi
Schooling / Water Veil / Intimidate / Terrify (Special Intimidate Clone)
Justification: Water Veil makes sense for an aquatic pokemon, as it can't really be burned by a fire under water. Intimidate and Terrify refer to the way that the School form scares off other threatening foes, such as Gyarados in its Pokedex entries.
Competitive: Water Veil lets it switch into Scald without fear of burn. The other abilities allow it to switch into either Physical or Special attacks far easier, allowing it to be a better tank.
