Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
Hippopotas @ Eviolite
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Slack Off
- Whirlwind
Hippopotas is a counter of TechniTop
CC is a 3HKO, when hippo could Slack Off all the dmg, making Top kill inself taking LO + Sand DMG, also hippo 2HKO with EQ.
252+ Atk Life Orb Hitmontop Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Hippopotas: 129-152 (37.9 - 44.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
4 Atk Hippopotas Earthquake vs. -1 160 HP / 0 Def Hitmontop: 130-154 (46.2 - 54.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after sandstorm damage
It can take 1 aerial ace and strength sap it gaining health back. After that you should spore hitmontop and then kill it with giga drain and moonblast. There is also a chance of hitmontop being statused on it's first attack.
calcs:
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Hitmontop Aerial Ace vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Shiinotic: 190-224 (58.6 - 69.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
4 SpA Shiinotic Giga Drain vs. 160 HP / 0 SpD Hitmontop: 69-82 (24.5 - 29.1%) -- 8.4% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock
4 SpA Shiinotic Moonblast vs. 160 HP / 0 SpD Hitmontop: 174-206 (61.9 - 73.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
-1 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Hitmontop Aerial Ace vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Shiinotic: 127-151 (39.1 - 46.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
Defensive set
Mawile @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Knock Off
- Toxic
- Play Rough
It's a Defensive check
Mawile appears and use Intimidate, later attacks him with Play Rough, and that's it. Also we have to use leftovers for a 3HKO
Look some calcs:
-1 252+ Atk Life Orb Hitmontop Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mawile: 121-144 (39.8 - 47.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
-1 252+ Atk Life Orb Hitmontop Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mawile: 135-161 (44.4 - 52.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
And Mawile's calcs:
4 Atk Mawile Play Rough vs. 160 HP / 0 Def Hitmontop: 180-212 (64 - 75.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
4 Atk Mawile Play Rough vs. -1 160 HP / 0 Def Hitmontop: 270-318 (96 - 113.1%) -- 75% chance to OHKO. This is later that Hitmontop use close combat
I'm putting it solely as a check since a combination of SR in the field and an unfortunate crit can end its checking ability. First off here is how Natu fares in defense:
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Hitmontop Rapid Spin vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Natu: 73-86 (25.7 - 30.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Hitmontop Aerial Ace vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Natu: 87-103 (30.6 - 36.2%) -- 47.2% chance to 3HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Hitmontop Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Natu: 43-51 (15.1 - 17.9%) -- possible 6HKO
And now, for the only offense this small bird needs against this huge threat:
4 SpA Natu Psychic vs. 160 HP / 0 SpD Hitmontop: 134-162 (47.6 - 57.6%) -- 90.6% chance to 2HKO
As for the rest of the set; Roost is pretty self explanatory. Teleport is nice to have if the Top predicts a switch and decides to waste LO damage on the little bird.
Heat Wave is there to not be just Pawniard set up fodder, or you can go with Toxic and cripple something else that comes in (mainly Psychics or Ghosts that can wall the little guy) or Top if for some reason stays there.
counter. hitmontop's earthquake and aerial ace both never 2hko, not even after stealth rock, while musharna can use hitmontop to setup its trick room. it can also act as a reliable counter through the entire game thanks to moonlight, while hitting decently hard.
the submission phase is over!! thanks to everyone who participated, here all the submissions!

if your submission got rejected, or if i changed some things on your set (such as slashing a move, or changing one) and you have any questions, please let me know on discord (and not on this thread!!). i'd also appreciate it if we didn't have convos on the thread!! it can clog up the thread and get in the way of other submissions. also, a reminder that you cansubmit any pokémon on the viability rankings as long you provide a good set.
vote for two checks and two counters! voting phase ends sunday.
P.S gum changed my set, which is pretty reasonable as trick is more useful than energy ball now that nobody uses things like palp and cash anymore. that was a set thats about 3 weeks old now :p thx gum
