Metagame Sketchmons

VirizIron (Iron Leaves) @ Life Orb
Ability: Quark Drive
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Leaf Blade
- Agility
- Psyblade
- Bitter Blade

I actually really like Virizion's design, so I was hyped when I saw it got a paradox form. Then I saw the stats and knew immediately it was going to get banned from UU. It does have a lot of options from coverage in sketch, as it already has access to swords dance and agility. I added bitter blade so that it can damage Corv and heal up from the LO chip. To be honest tho, I don't see this mon getting anywhere as the leaf+psyblade and close combat is usually the only coverage it needs. The only way to really add onto that is with flower trick, and even then that doesn't really do much of an increase.

Speaking of potential bitter blade sketchers there’s miasmaw kleavor.

Is bitter blade boosted by sharpness? I do know it isn’t boost by triage at least

I had the idea for poltergeist legion, but didn’t see any Pokémon with it so assumed it wasn’t in the game. After some research though, it appearently is. The only Pokémon that benefit from poltergeist though are legion and ceruledge tho.

I won with a team today so I’ll share it.

:kingambit:
I added this fellow after the chien pao ban. Very strong. Gigaton hammer gives it a total nuke on anything neutral. Can also revenge kill with sucker punch. Can struggle with dondozo (and tusk) tho.
:garganacl:
Knock sketch is awesome and epic for covert cloak and the like. Tera flying is there for ground and fighting types.
:torkoal:
Ahh torkoal. Most grandest of sun setters. Synthesis sketch allows it some longevity. Rapid spin can remove hazards. Will o wisp is awesome and can let the offensive mons get in easier. Stealth rock is well, stealth rock.(this thing is bulky af it can live garchomp eqs)
:walking wake:
My offensive protosynthesis mon. Tbh I could swap it for roaring moon. Torch song sketch allows it to boost its spa when clicking a fire move.
:great tusk:
Awesome wall. With sap it can wall stuff like garchomp, great tusk, roaring moon (maybe haven’t faced it). Knock off is awesome, second rapid spin is awesome, eq has great baseline damage.
:iron moth:
Last minute addition. Amazing breaker, focus blast sketch is there for heatran/garganacl.

Alright as we head into upkeep on this format: Urshifu (both formes), Comaphaze (Komala), Landorus-Incarnate are banned.

Plenty of posts detailing why all should be banned, so I won't go into it further.

Also welcome Career Ended to the council! They have plenty of experience in Sketch as a format last gen and will be a great addition as we try and continue the metagame for post home.

Next Steps: We look into terastallization! Since mons have multiple ways of adding coverage with sketch and/or tera blast, we might have to drop the mechanic due to the unpredictability of almost any threat. But for now I wish to hear what the public has to say before we make a decision

Is Palafin really not banned?
For some reason, the Bl doesn’t say it’s banned but both the tour and chall codes have -palafin in them. Also can we please ban the elephants in the room (ogerpon hearthflame, darkrai, skymin, tail glow as sketch move)

Update!

Want to send a big thank you to the OM staff for picking us for the month of December, and extend a warm welcome to anyone trying out Sketchmons for the first time this month! So in anticipation of Sketchmons being the Leader's choice spotlight ladder for OMOTM the Sketchmons council has updated the banlist.

These changes include updates to both the banned Pokemon list as well as the banned move list. The new additions are as follows:

New banned Pokemon:
:baxcalibur: Baxcalibur
:cinderace: Cinderace
:darkrai: Darkrai
:gliscor: Gliscor
:greninja: Greninja
:meowscarada: Meowscarada
:ogerpon-hearthflame: Ogerpon-Hearthflame
:palafin-hero: Palafin
:roaring-moon: Roaring Moon
:shaymin-sky: Shaymin-Sky
:sneasler: Sneasler
:Urshifu: Urshifu

We feel the majority of these Pokemon need no explanation for their inclusion, as they are also banned in OU currently. The inclusion of Cinderace, Greninja and Meowscarada has been one the council has been mulling over for some time, but ultimately we feel that Libero/Protean in the nature of the Sketchmons metagame is uncompetitive and banworthy. Greninja having access to Battle Bond to force a guessing game makes it entirely too strong. It's also worth mentioning that although Roaring Moon lacks access to booster energy, the tools it gets in this metagame (namely Glaive Rush, SD, coverage) offset this and thus we elected to keep it banned. Lastly, Gliscor might also seem to be acceptable in a metagame with more powerful STAB and coverage options. We still feel its defensive utility in Poison Heal, combined with its new access to plenty of strong recovery (Shore Up, Strength Sap), removal (Mortal Spin, Tidy Up) or attacking options (Precipice Blades, Stone Axe, Dragon Ascent, Jet Punch) keep it too overbearing and thus worthy of being quick banned alongside the rest of these Ubers.

Additionally, we have a couple move bans we are also implementing namely:

:samurott-hisui: Ceaseless Edge
:kommo-o: Clangorous Soul
:sneasler: Dire Claw
:tinkaton: Gigaton Hammer
:espathra: Lumina Crash
:volbeat: Tail Glow

You can read why these moves are being axed in the spoiler below:
  1. Ceaseless Edge alters the hazard game in this tier to an unhealthy degree due to its status as an attacking move that sets hazards available to every pokemon. Any Pokemon that doesn't 100% need a certain sketched move can always opt to run CE, because in every single game CE can be used to make progress regardless of the situation encountered. Additionally, CE bypasses two of the main players in the Hazard Game - Hatterene can't block spikes from coming up, while a Gholdengo switching in on a suspected hazard removal can instead lose a ton of health and be forced out. It also isn't stopped by Covert Cloak. CE remaining in the format worsens the hazard game to the detriment of nearly every team. The difference between CE and an option such as Stone axe comes down to Spikes stacking up to 3x where Stealth Rock are only set once.
  2. Clangorous Soul giving an Omni-boost for a mere 33% is simply too strong on a variety of set up Pokemon.
  3. Dire Claw offering 80 BP and 100% accuracy make it a fine coverage in its own right. It's crazy secondary effect madness is uncompetitive, especially when the 1/3 can fall on sleep and often can end the game on the spot. Although the increased viability of Covert Cloak in this metagame makes this less likely, item removal options can often rend this effort futile. Dire Claw was unanimously banned by the Sketchmons council.
  4. Gigaton Hammer is too strong a move, with too little of a downside. Kingambit, Scizor, Corviknight and other abusers offer mind numbing OHKO's and damage output that isn't feasible in a competitive metagame.
  5. Lumina Crash is another spammable, splashable option on the special side of the attacking spectrum. It's a really strong move that also forces any Pokemon that tries to switch into it back out with a guaranteed -2 SpDef. Abusers such as Munkidori, Hoopa and Iron Moth are all made unwallable with Lumina Crash's existence in the metagame.
  6. Tail Glow offers a significant upgrade over Nasty Plot, where in one turn a Pokemon can boost their SpAtk by 3 stages. This move makes nearly every fast special attacker into a nightmare to deal with. Pokemon such as Iron Moth, Tornadus-Therian and Iron Valiant all end up becoming nuclear game ending options when allowed to boost so strong, so quickly and a bevy of Pokemon would simply take their place if allowed to run Tail Glow.

Including the full current banlist here as well:
The following Pokemon are banned and cannot be used. New additions are bolded and italicized

:manaphy: Manaphy is now banned from Sketchmons!

Manaphy turned out to be an immense threat thanks to its two incredibly powerful set up options. Tail Glow sets can run either Freeze Dry to have almost no defensive switchins or Water Shuriken to prevent pokemon from revenge killing after setting up to +3. Take Heart sets on the other hand can run moves like Strength Sap in order to prolong its longevity and be incredibly hard to take down. It is a set up sweeper than can pick and choose what it loses to and one misplay from the opponent can let Manaphy steamroll through, making it a rather unhealthy presence.

Dondozo is broken

If anyone needs a team, here's one that's been doing well on ladder so far.

Immediate thoughts:
- Dondozo is broken. Thing does not die unless you have a cheese set or edrift gholdengo
- Dragonite seems a bit overbearing. 100 ways to kill you and it'll probably be espeed anyway
- I don't love tera. It's a fun gimmick to have protean on any move, but I feel it's a little too much in a meta like this

played a good amount of ladder games, here's some fun stuff i've been using

Lilligant-Hisui @ Life Orb
Ability: Hustle
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Victory Dance
- Flower Trick
- Close Combat
- Ice Spinner

ban this thing. jesus christ please get rid of it right now. did we not learn our lesson from stabmons.

Muk-Alola @ Assault Vest
Ability: Poison Touch
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Gunk Shot
- Salt Cure
- Poison Fang

the only thing more fun than av muk sets are non-passive av muk sets. this man will singlehandedly save you from getting 6-0'd by walking wake on sun teams and just give you a free switch in to every special attacker without earth power while also pouring salt on whatever tries to sit in on it. you can replace poison fang with something else if you're lame but i love the 50% toxic chance. pair with alomomola for best results

Sandy Shocks @ Focus Sash
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock
- Volt Switch
- Earth Power
- Ice Beam

delicious offensive sr lead. i get that hazard stacking is probably just better in most cases but i love this stab combo with ice beam too much. it's basically unresisted and it's funny to just bean garchomp leads that think they're safe

also i agree dondozo's kinda broken

How come Ceaseless Edge is banned but stone axe is not? I know spikes can be stacked over time making the move much more spammable, but rocks does have the benefit of hitting all Pokémon and still getting around hazard counterplay.

The basic summery is that spikes are bigger torture then sr, and the sr advantages don’t really matter with the metagame being as it is. (I.e the list of flying types not running boots is somewhat low, the list of other sr weak Pokémon is also somewhat low being basically confined to torkoal and maybe moth)

You've probably heard this complant already but Tera is way too busted in this tier.

:SV/Regidrago: :SV/Typhlosion: :SV/Wailord:

Just using examples from the watchlist, being able to slap on a 150 BP move like Dragon Energy or Water Spout and being able to Tera into that type and get STAB off of it is quite ridiculous. The fact that you have access to almost every move in the game means that Tera is way swingier and the random factor goes up all the way to 11 since you can run just about any offensive move like I said. On the opposite side of it any mon gaining recovery options means that Tera for set-up sweepers is also equally as ridiculous. Anyways short rant from me but yeah I think Tera is just way too much in this tier

fun set, won some games with it by itself

I've played like a hundred games already, so I'm gonna give my very early thoughts on the meta so far (excluding Tera since I already spoke on it)

:SV/Skeledirge: :SV/Yanmega:
Yanmega is pretty annoying right now namely because of Torch Song, which is also pretty cracked on just about everything else you can slap it onto like Iron Moth. Yanmega is just a product of Tera being Tera and Torch Song being busted as hell. I think Torch Song is just quite silly right now, and it probably needs to go at some point.

:SV/Dragonite:
Something that shouldn't go at some point rather as soon as possible is Dragonite. This thing is an absolute crutch and can steal wins it has no right doing. It's not even immediately apparent what the set is going to be when you run into it because it can be DD + Dragon Ascent or SD. Either way it has Tera Normal and Espeed obliterates most things. This thing is a nightmare to face and build around. I think this needs to be one of the first things to be hit.

:SV/Dondozo:
This thing is just silly. It has recovery now and it can just win on the spot at times because it tanks everything while setting up + it can just Tera out of any sticky situations. You can easily slap this team onto a balance or BO and have it infinitely wall just about any physical attacker they'll have. Don't even get me started on this thing on stall. I think Dondozo needs to ASAP similarly to Dragonite.

:SV/Kingambit:
It's really powerful offensively and quite annoying, but it's not that bad compared to everything else right now. The variety of moves it can run does make it really annoying, but I think this can possibly wait for later. I wouldn't mind if some tiering action happened sooner or later with this.

:SV/Pelipper::SV/Palafin-Hero:
Rain is also strong AF. I don't know how you'd go about nerfing this besides Basculegion or Barrskewda hits, but I think Rain is honestly a little overwhelming. Jet Punch is also quite silly, and when you pair it with Rain.. it becomes extra goofy.

:SV/Grimmsnarl: :SV/Ninetales-Alola:
Screens HO is also quite silly IMO. Again not sure how you'd combat this unless we wanna ban Light Clay. I think this is something you hold off on and try to nerf indirectly like say through Tera or something adjacent to that.

:SV/Walking Wake:
This thing does too much damage. STAB Water Spout or Dragon Energy is silly. Please ban this.

Mew @ Grip Claw
Ability: Synchronize
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Sand Tomb
- Salt Cure
- Taunt
- Rest

extremely stupid, borderline deadweight in most matchups, but if your wincon is to snipe their one unaware mon so your belly drum sweeper can click the win button, this is how you do it.

Why not infestation over sand tomb? Infestation can hit flying types and nothing is immune to it.
