And in this week we have the newest addition to the UU meta, Gastrodon. Gastrodon has been thrown up and down by UU and it always relies on bulky sets abusing its good typing and ability. With that in mind, such set is banned:

Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def or whatever bulky EVs
Impish Nature or Filler Nature
- Earthquake / Earth Power
- Toxic / Curse
- Recover
- Scald / Waterfall

Submissions are due to Friday. Have fun!

Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Sassy
- Whirlpool
- Recover
- Toxic
- Earthquake

This gastrodon mainly serves to toxic trap pokemon using the whirpool and toxic combo. Unlike some other whirpool trappers however, gastrodon has stab eq allowing it to hit for supereffective damage against steel/poison types that are immune to it's toxic, meaning it isn't totally walled by teams with a lot of poison and steel types, some example damage calcs for these are provided below. EV's/Nature are customisable depending on whether you want it to serve as a special or physical wall depending on team build, however I will be talking about a specially defensive set here.

While whirpool is less accurate than infestation, the initial damage on turn 1 has 2.625x more base power after stab, with a potential extra 1.5x boost if you activate storm drain, and also comes off a slightly higher special attack stat, and this initial damage can save turns against water weak/ground resistant/immune threats, potentially making or breaking the matchup. This is essentially a trade of some accuracy for more power and less required turns.

Especially against mons with roar/whirlwind, this initial higher damage will make a large difference. Against a pokemon like gligar with ground and toxic immunity, this also means you will do enough damage to potentially force a roost while you swap, instead of doing absolutely no damage at all with infestation, allowing a free knock off / u-turn on your swap.

0 SpA Gastrodon Whirlpool vs. 252 HP / 100 SpD Eviolite Gligar: 60-72 (17.9 - 21.5%) -- (29.9 - 33.5% after trapping damage)
0 SpA Gastrodon Infestation vs. 252 HP / 100 SpD Eviolite Gligar: 5-7 (1.4 - 2%) -- (13.4 - 14% after trapping damage)

Whirpool also does technically not work on mantine or volcanion or another gastrodon, but the best any of these 3 can actually hope to do to you is toxic back anyway. Whirpool also eases the matchup against mons like curse m-steelix, as it essentially gives you an earthquake damage on top of the infestation effect while infestation will minimal damage.

+1 208+ Atk Steelix-Mega Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Gastrodon: 343-405 (80.7 - 95.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Gastrodon Whirlpool vs. 252 HP / 48 SpD Steelix-Mega: 72-86 (20.3 - 24.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after trapping damage

I would personally go for the specially defensive so that it can "check" specs primarina, with a 36% chance to be 2hkoed by specs moonblast and an immunity to water moves putting real pressure on it (certainly not the best check in the world but hey still better than most things honestly), and also allowing it to not be 2hkoed by nidoking or any hydreigon sets except for a roll on z-draco into a draco (which won't work if you are already in and able to recover turn one) or a roll on 2 specs dracos (same problem).

Also walls electrium-z latias, and can survive a +1 dragonium-z from latias too. So depending on the latias set can essentially wall it, and at least scout the moveset and get a toxic off if nothing else.

4 Atk Gastrodon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Nidoking: 230-272 (75.9 - 89.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
4 Atk Gastrodon Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Filter Aggron-Mega: 67-81 (19.4 - 23.5%) -- possible 5HKO
4 Atk Gastrodon Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Klefki: 204-240 (64.3 - 75.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery (probably running magnet rise though but eh)
4 Atk Gastrodon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Cobalion: 152-180 (47 - 55.7%) -- 69.9% chance to 2HKO
4 Atk Gastrodon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Bisharp: 186-222 (68.6 - 81.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
4 Atk Gastrodon Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 112 Def Tentacruel: 224-266 (61.5 - 73%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery
4 Atk Gastrodon Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 124+ Def Nidoqueen: 168-198 (43.7 - 51.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Black Sludge recovery

+1 252 SpA Latias Devastating Drake (195 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 346-408 (81.4 - 96%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Latias Psyshock vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Gastrodon: 237-279 (55.7 - 65.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Latias Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 107-127 (25.1 - 29.8%) -- 0% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Hydreigon Draco Meteor vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 169-199 (39.7 - 46.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Hydreigon Dark Pulse vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 105-124 (24.7 - 29.1%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Hydreigon Devastating Drake (195 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 253-298 (59.5 - 70.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Hydreigon Draco Meteor vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 253-298 (59.5 - 70.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Earth Power vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 153-181 (36 - 42.5%) -- 93% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Gastrodon @ Groundium Z
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 156 HP / 124 Def / 156 SpA / 72 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Earth Power
- Ice Beam
- Surf / Scald
- Recover

A bit more of an offensive gastrodon set here which has the benefit of nuking a lot of steel types in the tier with Ground-Z. I opted for 3 atk for coverage. Earth power and Surf as stab moves. Surf hits harder than Scald vs Rotom and Moltres, but if you pref the chance to Scald burn something then it's not a huge trade-off. Ice Beam is nice coverage to hit Hydra, Lati, Celebi etc. Recover allows it to have some form of sustain. Tectonic Rage lets you potentially remove MegaLix, Empoleon or Tentacruel trying to set or remove hazards thinking they will take little chip from Gastro then just outright removing them. Also does a decent amount to things that take neutral damage from its coverage like Specs Prima etc.

EV spread:
- Enough Speed for Hippo, if you don't care about the Def benchmarks you can run 96 Spe for uninvested base 50s like Aggron.
- SpA investment has better odds to OHKO bulky scizor and Empoleon after SR.
- Enough HP to eat a Grass Knot after SR from Nihi and LO Zera. And eat a HP Grass from Manectric after SR.
- Def lets you eat a CC from CB Terrakion from full and helps you eat hits from CB & SD Scizor.

156+ SpA Gastrodon Tectonic Rage (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 180+ SpD Empoleon: 344-408 (92.4 - 109.6%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

156+ SpA Gastrodon Tectonic Rage (175 BP) vs. 156 HP / 0 SpD Scizor: 273-322 (85.3 - 100.6%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

252 SpA Manectric-Mega Hidden Power Grass vs. 156 HP / 0 SpD Gastrodon: 316-376 (78.6 - 93.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

4 SpA Life Orb Zeraora Grass Knot (60 BP) vs. 156 HP / 0 SpD Gastrodon: 270-322 (67.1 - 80%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

252 SpA Nihilego Grass Knot (60 BP) vs. 156 HP / 0 SpD Gastrodon: 304-360 (75.6 - 89.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

252 Atk Choice Band Terrakion Close Combat vs. 156 HP / 124 Def Gastrodon: 339-400 (84.3 - 99.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252+ Atk Scizor Superpower vs. 156 HP / 124 Def Gastrodon: 334-393 (83 - 97.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252+ Atk Iron Plate Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 156 HP / 124 Def Gastrodon: 150-177 (37.3 - 44%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

It's strange but Gastrodon actually have access to Memento. When it's paired with the Darkinium Z it allows Gastrodon to support its teammates by totally healing the Pokémon arriving on the field. The EVs spread allows Gastrodon to be only 3HKO by Krookodile's Earthquake while still maximizing its Special Bulk.

Gastrodon is a really nice mixed wall in UU and I'm glad its back. As a mixed wall, it can't really handle the extreme power of certain attackers such as Specs Primarina, Z-Clanging Scales Kommo-o, or coverage moves like x4 super effective Grass Knot from Zeraora and Hidden Power Grass from Mega Manectric. While Gastrodon can't do much in return without offensive investment, it gets a nice loophole in Mirror Coat for special attackers. Doubling the damage back, Gastrodon is able to check these scary special attackers without forfeiting its defensive presence as much.
252+ SpA Choice Specs Primarina Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 196+ SpD Gastrodon: 217-256 (51 - 60.2%) -- 89.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

4 SpA Life Orb Zeraora Grass Knot (60 BP) vs. 248 HP / 196+ SpD Gastrodon: 203-239 (47.7 - 56.2%) -- 23.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Manectric-Mega Hidden Power Grass vs. 248 HP / 196+ SpD Gastrodon: 236-280 (55.5 - 65.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Kommo-o Devastating Drake (185 BP) vs. 248 HP / 196+ SpD Gastrodon: 219-258 (51.5 - 60.7%) -- 91.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
The Defense investment is to only 3HKO by Krookodile's Earthquake, even without Leftovers.

Z-Stockpile Gastrodon

Gastrodon @ Normalium Z
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 244 HP / 64 Def / 200 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Infestation
- Whirlpool
- Stockpile
- Rest

General idea
Here we have a Gastrodon with Stockpile in order to boost both our Def and SpD to the point you can Rest with relative ease.
Normalium Z allows us to Stockpile once and recharge our HP in the process: this trait is very useful on a bulky pokemon like Gastrodon because we have already a good mixed bulk.
An important thing to consider that we have to avoid the Grass STABs early on and is better to use the Z Stockpile only when necessary in order to not waste a powerful effect like this one.
Infestation + Whirlpool are trap moves perfect for an attrition war like this one and they don't really need SpA investment because they put a timer onto the opposite threat.
Rest is picked over Recover because it is our best way to recharge the HP + get rid of Toxic. Stockpile allows us to survive enough time to wake up still alive and after a +3/+3 this is really likely to happen.

The spread allows to accomplish this feature:
252 SpA Celebi Giga Drain vs. 248 HP / 200+ SpD Gastrodon: 352-420 (82.8 - 98.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
The loss of Leftovers is great, but a +1 Def and SpD boost is much more valuable; look at these calcs:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Primarina Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 200+ SpD Gastrodon: 216-255 (50.8 - 60%) -- 85.9% chance to 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Primarina Moonblast vs. +1 248 HP / 200+ SpD Gastrodon: 144-171 (33.8 - 40.2%) -- 37.6% chance to 3HKO
Specs Primarina has a very low chance to 2HKO Gastrodon at full health with a +1 in the middle.
4 SpA Life Orb Zeraora Grass Knot (60 BP) vs. 244 HP / 200+ SpD Gastrodon: 203-239 (47.8 - 56.3%) -- 23.8% chance to 2HKO
4 SpA Life Orb Zeraora Grass Knot (60 BP) vs. +1 244 HP / 200+ SpD Gastrodon: 135-161 (31.8 - 37.9%) -- 0.2% chance to 3HKO
Zeraora can be used as a set-up bait because it is not able to 2HKO Gastrodon unless crits and after only one Stockpile we are able to use Rest safely.

Teammates support
A way to get rid of Grass-type pokemon is needed in order to attempt a set-up with this Gastrodon.

This takes your wall gastro, un-walls it, and makes it a wincon. Removal of water absorb users/grasses is required though. Resttalk cuz thats broken and Waterfall because EQ gets walled by levitaters and flying.

Twilight won by a landslide this week with his Groundium Z set! Looks like this one's a hit :psywoke:

Gligar: a Gliscor with no offensive presence whatsoever. Gliscor has plenty of options to keep it versatile, but does Gligar share much of that versatility as untapped potential?

Standard Gligar is blacklisted.
Gligar @ Eviolite
Ability: Immunity
EVs: fat evs of some variety
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock / Defog
- Earthquake
- Roost
- Toxic / U-turn / Knock Off / Wing Attack (or another random Flying move for hera on stall)

don't submit sr defog gligar either thanks

Submissions are due by Friday.

- Roost

yea the evs are kind standard, but nothing to do with hazards. Ran more speed on Gligar to outrun Adamant Crawdaddy. Tailwind makes slower threats well..faster. Uturn to provide momentum, eq for damage, roost heals etc.

Careful Nature

- Facade / Rock Slide
- Curse

This gligar set aims to make the use of the actually great spdef gligar can get when fully investing in it. After a curse it'll also have far better physical def than the standard set does too. Ev's couuld be customisable for certain kills, but max spdef is useful against stuff like hydreigon. aka gonna change ev's laterr but they are filler atm

Facade/Rock Slide : Rock slide for the flying types that are immune to earthquake (or levitaters), or facade if you are worried about potential burns (eg from empo/rotom/alo).

Set is good for stuff like scizor which thinks it can come and sd up on you etc like on the standard set.

Homage to its big brother Gliscor. When there's another remover available and the consistency Gligar would provide over a scarfer isn't needed Taunt Toxic can help for the fat m/u. Taunt in general kinda underrated on Gligar tbh.
