Hello. We are not too far away from the release of the Crown Tundra DLC for Pokemon Sword and Shield, with it being given an official release date of October 22! With it, Anything Goes will be reverting to its regular self "[Gen 8] Anything Goes" (currently nicknamed "Galar Dex") instead of the National Dex format we currently use. This is a thread to speculate on the up and coming metagame, with the information we currently know. Be warned, there will obviously be spoilers in this post and thread. I have compiled all the information we have for the upcoming DLC and included it all in this thread for convenience.

Two new unrevealed Pokémon were revealed to be #896 and #897 by reliable dataminer @SciresM on Twitter. Not much is known about these Pokemon other than they fuse with Calyrex to create two new formes for it.

Another important thing to note that's different between National Dex / Generation 7 and standard Generation 8, for people who are unaware, is that some moves like Hidden Power and Refresh are completely removed from the game, and unable to be used. These two are the main relevant ones.

Other various additions that come will be the inclusion of a Hidden Ability Capsule, an item that allows Pokémon to switch to their Hidden Ability, some previous unobtainable, like Sand Rush Dracovish. This is the only remotely potentially viable one however.

This is the information we currently know about the upcoming Anything Goes metagame. As we know a fair bit, we can make educated guesses about how the metagame will pan out. That's what this thread is for! Feel free to post about stuff you're excited to try out in the upcoming metagame, as well as predictions for what it will look like. Trick Room
Ok, ok, hear me out here. Trick Room in natdex AG is held back by the omnipresence of stuff like defensive waterceus and Primal Groudon, both of which are reliably capable of shutting down TR's strongest breakers, which are Dracovish and Melmetal. Without those hards-stops to TR, I could see it being extremely threatening in the post-dlc 2 meta, with setters like NDM, Magearna, Lunala, and potentially Palkia setting TR against most of the major offensive threats to allow Dracovish or Melmetal to rip teams apart. Additionally, Stakataka will also be around, and it should be a nice reliable stop to dmax ray sets, and able to set TR on them before turning into a threatening snowballing sweeper.

Other stuff
Unless Calyrex has enough bulk to be a solid ogre check, the only extant ogre checks will lose to gothitelle, so stuff like Shedinja will be one of the only reliable checks to Kyogre. (sigh). Weather wars sounds scary, but hopefully my boy dracovish will actually be usable! This meta seems really scary since there aren't really any soft checks to yveltal, so we'll have to go back to just sticking Ho-Oh everywhere and hoping for the best, or trying to cram ttar / diancie on teams. The loss of support arcs also really restricts fogging options, which mean spikestack could be big.

Here are some of my early thoughts

This is actually probably going to be better than it is right now in natdex without arc-dark and arc-fairy

This is still going to be very good, the only thing it is missing is hp fire but sub xern is still viable and will probably be a top metagame threat

Dynamax SD ray with dragon ascent will be scary, it is hard to say how good it will be right now but I am predicting it will be a solid metagame threat that everyone will have to prepare for

Wouldn't be surprised if this gets more than 50% usage, probably going to be the best defogger without support arcs being in the meta

This is going to be very threatening without pdon around, I would even say this might be a contender the best pokemon in the metagame

Also weather is going to be a thing again

some thoughts from a noob:
Pdon's removal will be greatly beneficial for Zacian-crowned, as the fully defensive set (rest talk) can greatly annoy Zacian as even as a +2 cc with two rounds of stealth rock chip would not kill it.
Rayquaza will become a much less usable mon, as Zacian having a good speed tier over it means that it's only really gonna get one chance to sweep with sd +. dmax. However, I think there would be better choices for such a role.
Most physical attackers will get a decent nerf, as the return of Lugia means that yeah, sweeping days with just dmax will be over.

I might just go through my own predictions since I've been following this very closely and theorising their impacts for a while.


Kyogre seems to be the main threat at the moment, with a lack of Primal Groudon and soft checks like Arceus-Water, it finds itself in a really good position. Honestly, expect this to invalidate any weather that isn't rain, assuming it's that prominent. But Rain should thrive as a playstyle and that excites me. An Anything Goes metagame with weather is something we haven't really had if you discount current Galar Dex. I'm excited to see how it goes. Choice Scarf / Choice Specs both seem excellent. Dynamax will most likely still function well even with the Hidden Power nerf. We might be overating its prominence a little, but I think it's safe to assume this will be a threat.


Yveltal only gets better with the removal of Arceus-Dark and Arceus-Fairy. Even with the buffs to Diancie, Yveltal still seems amazing. Ideally one of the unrevealed Pokemon is a Yveltal counter but we can only dream.


Xerneas doesn't appreciate the loss of Hidden Power Fire. Misty Explosion is a cool tech, but I only see that really being a thing on Sticky Web maybe, if at all. I've heard hype about Play Rough Choice Band sets but I honestly don't see it. I assume Necrozma-DM will still be a staple with Zacian-C still existing, which CB Xerneas cannot break.


Offensive sets for this seem more promising with the lack of support Arceus existing. Support Xerneas might pick up in usage? I'm struggling to see what will be the common answer for this Pokemon other than offensive pressure. Defensive sets can now run Scorching Sands and attempt to burn opponents, which only aids their capabilities, probably not worth it though.


Ho-Oh gets Fire Spin. This may not seem like much, but imagine a Ho-Oh trapping an opposing Ho-Oh and whittling it down with Toxic. I also wonder what common Ho-Oh counterplay will be, Zygarde-C, Kyogre?


I actually find this to be alright. It OHKOs Kyogre with priority without an item! It resists both of Zygarde-C's STABs. It gets Play Rough now so it can do something back to Zygarde-C. Honestly doesn't seem that bad. It does struggle immensely with Necrozma-DM however, which has me much less confident. It can run Swords Dance High Horsepower and Dynamax to get around it, but this seems like a waste.

Expanding Force on this is lovely. Might be substantially worse than Tapu Koko due to assumed Necrozma-DM prevalence. PsychicSpam also loses abusers with no Deoxys.


Tornadus gets Nasty Plot now, which allows it to be a niche Dynamax sweeper with Hurricane and Heat Wave but I believe it's still outclassed by better Dynamax Pokemon like Xerneas & Yveltal.

Flying-type Pokemon that can Dynamax after obtaining a +2 boost seem incredible. Moltres-G is probably just a weaker Yveltal, but if it can find a way to abuse Berserk, or if they frick up and give it Nasty Plot, it could be extremely potent.

-> Sticky Web loses its premier setter in Smeargle, but takes advantage of the lack of Defog users with support Arceus gone, and gains two new ways to abuse Defog in Defiant Zapdos-G and Competitive Articuno-G. It's hard to say how good the latter two will be but regardless Sticky Web looks like a solid playstyle come November.

-> Spike stack also benefits from the aforementioned lack of removal. Naganadel gets Spikes and Toxic Spikes now which is sorta swell but there's probably better options. Lack of removal definitely aids teams that rely on this though.

-> Options for removal currently are limited to Ho-Oh, Lunala, Giratina, defensive Xerneas, defensive Yveltal, Tapu Fini? It's not nice out there.

-> SR is also somewhat limited and I can honestly see NDM being every team's Stealth Rock user.

Here's my 2 cents on the upcoming metagame:

I'm giving this mon a huge headsup this time mostly due to the fall of Arceus-Dark and Arceus-Fairy. Only check which is Diancie may also lose due to Steel Wing so I don't see it losing to anything but a reverse sweep or another bulky dynamax user.

I don't like Xerneas at all this time due to no HP Fire. Only reason I'm mentioning it is because it is now a physical user so expect something like Band? Mixed Xerneas? Sure..

Zygarde gonna be a huge threat too after the fall of several Arceus formes with Ice Beam or Arceus-Fairy. Scorching Sands may be somewhat viable too on it's defensive/offensive set? As it could burn Zacian-Crowned just like how Scald works? Well..

Specs/Scarf/CM HP Flying..ah yes weather teams are coming back! All those sets are going to destroy things out there on the field. I'm expecting Gastrodon and Chansey to rise in usage now as it's becoming a thing. Quite the deadly one indeed.

Necrozma-Dusk-Mane(couldn't find the sprite): I wish they allowed two dusk manes in a single team. Anyway Dusk Mane has to fulfill alot of roles this time outside checking Zacian-Crowned. It'll be checking on things like Band Tapu-Bulu, Specs Tapu-Lele and Physical Xerneas so it's going to be a really crucial Pokemon in one's team. It'll perhaps be the standard switchin' too of Xerneas over Chansey.

I'm expecting Ho-Oh to be something outside HDB this time. Probably band/scarf/life orb like previously since there's no Stone Edge Primal-Groudon nor a threatening Mega-Rayquaza. Rocks and etc can be played around.

As mentioned in the above post, I think Tapu Bulu is going to be extremely good for one-shotting Kyogres while also checking Zygarde's offensive variants. Another good thing it gets Stone Edge so it's not that easy for Ho-Oh to land in.

Sand offense? Hell yeah! This with Life Orb will be fine too.

It's signature move seems really good while the other two could be greatly used under webs team. I am expecting a BP similar to Wicked Blow, somewhat 70-80.

I have a feeling that the new regi stats will be reversed with these stats, like attack and special attack will be swapped with defense and special defense or something like that.

Signature moves of both the regis looks pretty fun to use.

TL;DR Crown Tundra will be epic.

Thoughts on AG giants.
This will likely be like Mega Ray's impact on the metagame, except now it takes a dyna slot. I can totally see this working, but not to the success it would've had. Maybe might work well with Memento as it gives a free SD turn.
Loss of primal was saddening for Don, but it gained a new set, dynamax, this thing is busted. One turn of SD and all of its threats are just ripped.
This is insane. Losing HP Flying was bad for Ogre, but, now it can fire off scarf spouts like no problem. This'll be insane.
This wont change at all. Unless it got a fire move, such as Mystical Fire, otherwise, its just Natdex Xern but a hell of a lot worse, saddening really.
This thing will thrive, losing really helped. Steel Wing Yvel will be more common, and with some proper skill, I honestly thing this mon is just gonna be the most broken thing we've seen yet.
Loss of makes it the best fogger, and in a metagame where every hp counts, this'll be important, it also appreciates losing Red Orb, as now it will lose usage.
Loss of arc forms really help it, no change though.
With all the mons losing special forms, this could be a amazing phaser, and a softcheck. Other than that, no changes.
Now for the less viable mons.
Chansey will remain a decent mon, will be amazing prey for blobbo.
Zacian checks will be well appreciated.
This will lose all viability.
In a world where Yvel is king, this'll help.
Memento + Setup will really appreciate dyna sweepers such as if they can't get a free turn.

The Fairy typing is much more of a mixed bag than you make it sound. The extra Steel weakness is something it could really do without. It's a boon insofar as it lets it directly check Zygarde (which Rillaboom can also do by Knocking Off its item then U-turning into something that forces it out of just clicking its STAB several times), but against pretty much every other matchup the typing is a curse and makes it easier to exploit. Rillaboom is also naturally faster so it outspeeds Nec DM without investment, and speed ties Zygod.

Both have a roll to break Sub with Grassy Glide, in Bulu's case it's in its favour, in Boom's case it's a 50/50.

As well as this, Bulu has to run High Horsepower to threaten Nec DM and other Steels switching in, Stone Edge to threaten Ho-Oh and other birds, and then Play Rough to 1v1 Zygod, while Rillaboom hits all of them with Knock Off and/or U-turns for momentum. I don't really see how Bulu is going to find space for Whirlwind (not mentioning Superpower due to it probably hitting nothing important in AG and compounding the issue further, you can forget running Swords Dance), and in general it being blocked by Dynamax makes it a less desirable trait.

TL;DR: Bulu suffers from 4MSS trying to cover its numerous switch-ins, and probably can't even fit Whirlwind without being a free switch-in for something important. Rillaboom does not thanks to its access to Knock Off and U-turn to cripple switch-ins and gain momentum. So unless your team is that ZyGod-weak that you just lose to Dragon Tail (or maybe you need a Zekrom check or something??), Rillaboom is the better choice.

And I thought the rest of my post was agreeing with what most others were saying. I just don't get why people are jumping up and down over Bulu when it has so much 4MSS and a direct competitor in Rillaboom that doesn't.

There’s still a 12.5% difference in our OHKO percentages. That’s as much difference between a 100% and 87.5%(which is what I have), so it’s 1/8% bigger.

Trick Room
Ok, ok, hear me out here. Trick Room in natdex AG is held back by the omnipresence of stuff like defensive waterceus and Primal Groudon, both of which are reliably capable of shutting down TR's strongest breakers, which are Dracovish and Melmetal. Without those hards-stops to TR, I could see it being extremely threatening in the post-dlc 2 meta, with setters like NDM, Magearna, Lunala, and potentially Palkia setting TR against most of the major offensive threats to allow Dracovish or Melmetal to rip teams apart. Additionally, Stakataka will also be around, and it should be a nice reliable stop to dmax ray sets, and able to set TR on them before turning into a threatening snowballing sweeper.

Other stuff
Unless Calyrex has enough bulk to be a solid ogre check, the only extant ogre checks will lose to gothitelle, so stuff like Shedinja will be one of the only reliable checks to Kyogre. (sigh). Weather wars sounds scary, but hopefully my boy dracovish will actually be usable! This meta seems really scary since there aren't really any soft checks to yveltal, so we'll have to go back to just sticking Ho-Oh everywhere and hoping for the best, or trying to cram ttar / diancie on teams. The loss of support arcs also really restricts fogging options, which mean spikestack could be big.

We talking about anything goes or generation 8 Ubers? Because I'm pretty sure you will still see dmax Yveltal everywhere.

Another important thing to note that's different between National Dex / Generation 7 and standard Generation 8, for people who are unaware, is that some moves like Hidden Power and Refresh are completely removed from the game, and unable to be used. These two are the main relevant ones.

Other various additions that come will be the inclusion of a Hidden Ability Capsule, an item that allows Pokémon to switch to their Hidden Ability, some previous unobtainable, like Sand Rush Dracovish. This is the only remotely potentially viable one however.

I genuinely do not think that there is going to be much of a change for anything goes. As for generation 8 Ubers? Yeah absolutely. It's probably going to be less scary over there considering the most broken Pokemon in ag (Yveltal,) isn't going to be able to Dynamax.

seems too slow and frail to appreciate SD, especially if the opponent has , which'll probably be the majority of the time.

Scarf Ogre seems to be the only real check that doesn't have to Dynamax against this thing. Ditto could work if Groudon has taken enough damage to get KO'ed by Precipice Blades. Rillaboom might pose a threat if it Dynamaxes.

Air Balloon Stakataka walls this thing unfortunately, but if the opponent switches in to it you can Max Quake and KO it.

why would you run Aerial Ace. It is Groudon only flying move. You already have to chose between ground stab, Fire coverage, Stealth rock, set-up , Dragon coverage, fighting coverage, iron head, Rock coverage, and electric coverage. That is a lot to choose from and doesn't leave room for aerial ace.
