National Dex Ubers: Magearna Stall (Peaked #9 on ladder)

Hello all! I wanted to build around the established ND Ubers stall core of Giratina (Altered or Origin,) Ho-Oh, Dondozo, and Chansey. This team has achieved #9 on the ND Ubers ladder so far.

Rationale for choosing team members:
SV ND Ubers has established a "big 4" core for stall. I chose Giratina-Origin over Giratina because of its Spikes immunity through Levitate allowing it to Defog more comfortably. Its ground immunity also helps it to fend off Primal Groudon and reduce the amount of physical hits that Dondozo needs to take. Its slightly higher offensive stats also allow its status-boosted hexes to hit harder and do meaningful damage against some opponents. Ho-Oh's defensive set is a sturdy defogger with the Regenerator ability. Dondozo serves as a check to many of the physical setup threats in the tier, as well as strong physical attackers in general. Chansey serves as an excellent special sponge that helps to take on many of the tier's special attacking monsters. Magearna was chosen as a check to Yveltal, as it resists both Flying and Dark while also providing excellent utility. Defensive Yveltal rounds out the team as an annoyance to opposing stall with Taunt + Toxic, and crucically relieves the pressure that Photon Geyser Ultra Necrozma exerts on Dondozo.

Team members:

(Giratina-Origin) @ Griseous Core
Ability: Levitate
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Hex
- Defog
- Rest

Giratina Origin has great physical bulk and the typing and ability to take on most Primal Groudon sets. This allows it to take many hits comfortably to poison foes, defog on Stealth Rock Primal Groudon, and hit statused foes with boosted hexes. Toxic is used as the status of choice because it can cripple opponents that Giratina's teammates can wall as they lose health. Rest is used because it is Giratina's only form of recovery, and works well with Heal Bell support from Magearna.

(Ho-Oh) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 248 HP / 204 Def / 56 SpD
Impish Nature
- Defog
- Toxic
- Sacred Fire
- Whirlwind

This is a bulky Ho-Oh set that aims to defog on threats that Giratina-O may have trouble with. Crucially, with whirlwind, it can phaze out many Xerneas variants, except for those with tera types and coverage moves specifically aimed at removing Ho-Oh. However, those variants are more easily walled by Chansey. Sacred Fire is used as a strong stab move with a high chance to spread burns on opponents. Toxic helps to cripple certain mons that scare it out on the switch. Tera Grass helps to deal with Kyogre.

(Dondozo) @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Rest
- Curse
- Body Press
- Liquidation

Dondozo is a simple mon. It Curses up in front of physical threats in an attempt to wall them, then uses Rest to restore its health and remove status. This set has two attacks because mono-attacking water sets are completely walled by Primal Groudon. Body Press is also an important tool against mons weak to fighting, such as the annoying Taunt Arceus-Dark and Extreme Killer Arceus.

(Chansey) @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Seismic Toss
- Toxic
- Confide
- Soft-Boiled

Chansey's EVs are set to maximize mixed bulk on both sides; because Chansey's HP is so much higher than its defense stats, investing in HP would actually diminish the returns from investing. By investing in both defense stats, Chansey makes itself as bulky as possible on the entire attacking spectrum. Though most sets run Seismic Toss, Aromatherapy, Confide, and Soft-Boiled, this set has room to slot on Toxic because Magearna is on cleric duty, allowing it to better pressure setup threats. Tera Grass helps to deal with Kyogre.

(Magearna) @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul-Heart
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Fleur Cannon
- Spikes
- Heal Bell
- Pain Split

Magearna is this team's distinguishing factor. Fleur Cannon is a powerful stab move that hits many important threats super effectively, and makes it able to do something to Taunt Arceus-Dark. Spikes are a new addition to Magearna's movepool this generation, and they provide crucial team support for when Magearna gets a free turn or two from walling something. I also believe that Spikes are a better hazard than Stealth Rock in this tier because many of the mons that Stealth Rock hits harder than Spikes are already using Heavy Duty Boots. Heal Bell is used to remove status, especially useful with the team's Rest users. Pain Split allows Magearna a form of semi-reliable recovery, and can chip down threats as they switch in.

‍ ‍(Yveltal) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Dark Aura
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 248 HP / 180 Def / 80 Spe
Impish Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Foul Play
- Toxic
- Taunt
- Roost

This Yveltal set uses Toxic and Taunt to annoy stall teams and bulky balance mons. With Roost, it maintains longevity to switch in multiple times throughout a game. Crucially, it has defensive investment and speed that allow it to take on Necrozma-Dusk-Mane, Ultra Necrozma, and Primal Groudon with its powerful Dark Aura-boosted Foul Plays. This set could run Defog, but the team already has two defoggers.

Summary:

This team aims to blend sturdy walls, hazard and status stacking, and crucial resistances to powerful attacks to win games.

Why does Dondozo use Leftovers over Heavy Duty Boots? I'm not familiar with the meta so I dont really know how big Spikes are in the meta.

donzo runs leftovers in ndubers to live some matchups as well as the fact spikes are easily taken care off by gira o + hooh

Cool team! It’s pretty much optimized so I only have a few minor changes

:Giratina-Origin: should run 30 Speed IVs or a negative speed nature to ensure it always gets a slow defog off vs slower variants of :Groudon-Primal:

:Ho-Oh: needs only 52 SpDef EVs to tank a +2 Thunder from non-Tera :Xerneas: so you can remove 4 EVs from SpDef to Def

When facing fatter teams that spam mono :Heavy-Duty-Boots: or stall teams, it may be worthwhile to have a Knock Off abuser so you make progress with hazards as opposed as to just status. For that, I recommend running Knock Off over Toxic or Taunt on :Yveltal:

For added breaking power, :Dondozo: could run Wave Crash over Liquidation, although the recoil adds up rather quickly. However, you secure a couple more KOs when considering Spikes hazard damage, which could be situationally helpful.

Finally, :Chansey: can try slotting Stealth Rock over Toxic to punish teams with :Ho-Oh: should you be able to get a Knock Off on it with :Yveltal:

IMO donzo really does not need the added bp as it barely changes any matchup calcs. it will only chip it more. aside from that i agree that chansey could run rocks + yv knock for pressure on Hooh. although its not really needed as chansey can clean off special attackers much quicker.

Yo I’d say that if you are going with only foul play on yveltal, I suggest using a bold nature since that attack won’t matter anyways.
