Steelix finds itself a niche as a defensive rocks-setter with the ability to check a variety of physical attackers such as Drapion and Escavalier due it's gargantuan base Defense. Body Press is Steelix's main attacking move that allows it to dish out consistent damage during the course of a battle.it also provides higer damage output than Earthquake against neutral targets. Earthquake in the second slot allows Steelix to hit common poison types such as Salazzle, Dragalge and Galarian Slowbro. Alternatively, Head Smash can be used to pressure common defoggers such as Mantine and Xatu. Toxic allows steelix to cripple the aforementioned defoggers as well as pokemon like Golurk and Dhelmise. Curse can also be increase the power of Steelix's Head Smash to allow it to break past Xatu. The given EV spread helps to maximise it's defensive capability by hitting a jump point on the physically defensive side and allows it to handle attacks from the special side from the likes of Goodra and Dragalge as well.
Steelix fits well on a variety of playstyles ranging from balance to bulky offense and even stall with its ability to set up rocks reliably and the ability to consistently check pokemon like Gardevoir. like It synergises well with bulky waters such as Vaporeon and Mantine to form as they can handle Pokemon like Barraskewda, Inteleon and Charizard for it. In return, it can handle electric type moves from the likes of Heliolisk for them.
Steelix can check special attackers such as Gardevoir and Dragalge but gets worn down due to it's middling bulk so secondary checks such as Porygon2 and Umbreon help ease some pressure on it . Notably, Steelix also lacks any form of reliable recovery which means that Wish users such as Umbreon and Vaporeon also pair well with it. Lastly, Galarian Slowbro also synergizes well with Steelix as it can check Fighting-type Pokemon such as Bewear and Passimian for Steelix whereas Steelix can handle Pokemon like Drapion that like to revenge kill Galarian Slowbro.
