Project SS Ubers - Matchmaking Week 10 Calyrex-I (Ice Horse)

Katy

Banned deucer.
With an overwhelming amount Ferrothorn by Hrishioo7 is the first winner this round
Now we have a tie between Groudon and Xerneas: as such it gets decided by Pokemon Showdowns pick-option, therefore the 2nd winner will be
Xerneas by hoennseptile

Prove of pick: 1632034129201.png

As such you two will be in the Hall Of Fame in Week 1: Gratulations to you and thank you all for your amazing submissions in Week 1, I really loved each and every of those! ^.^

Our Pokemon of Week 2 will be none other than the Groundbreaker itself, Groudon, which recently dominated Week 1 in SCL with an amazing killrate:

:ss/groudon:
Groudon @ Leftovers
Ability: Drought
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Atk / 16 Spe

Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance

- Thunder Wave
- Precipice Blades

- Stone Edge

With being able to tear the landscape apart, this Pokemon easily made a name for itself in the Ubers terretory, even with the loss of Desolate Land and its secondary typing it still is a dominating threat to account with in the teambuilder. Swords Dance and Thunder Wave are great setup- and utility options for it to threaten even faster threats, as Thunder Wave can help it out here. The so called EdgeQuake coverage (here Precipice Blades) are always capable of claiming KOes in the process of the game. Precipice Blades hits Necrozma-DM, Eternatus, Zamazenta-C, and Zekrom for super effectie damage meanwhile Stone Edge is capable of hitting Ho-Oh, Yveltal, and Giratina-O. But this Pokemon has some issues with breaking through bulkier threats such as Zygarde-C, Landorus-T, and regular Giratina, as they're bulky enough to withstand moves and they can threaten it back with statusconditions such as Toxic or Will-O-Wisp. So lets think about partners for this Godzilla-like Pokemon to help it out to overcome this issue.
Submission Deadline will be on Friday. Happy submitting everyone :blobwizard:

Sidenote: Please write MORE than only 1 line as explanation.
It doesn't have to be an essay but also should not be too short. It should explain a bit more in-depth of how these Pokemon can help Groudon. Thank you for your understanding! :)

⚡⚡⚡ (Zekrom) @ Life Orb
Ability: Teravolt
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Weather Ball / Draco Meteor / Substitute
- Dragon Claw
- Bolt Strike

Here comes the infamous ZekDon ! With its access to Dragon Dance and its nice STAB in Bolt Strike and Dragon Claw, Zekrom pairs well with Groudon, sweeping many threats Groudon can hinders with Thunder Wave, such as Calyrex-SR, Choice Scarf Yveltal and Choice Scarf Kyogre. Zekrom's high Special Attack can be used with either Weather Ball or Draco Meteor, giving a guaranteed OHKO on Ferrothorn, Buzzwole or Zygarde, which Groudon can have trouble breaking, even with its Swords Dance set. Zekrom can also opt for Substitute to setup on passive Pokemon such as Necrozma-DM lacking Earthquake. In return, Groudon offers a threatening answer to Xerneas, Eternatus, and Landorus-T thanks to its high bulk and Swords Dance.

Darmanitan-Galar @ Choice Scarf / Choice Band
Ability: Gorilla Tactics
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Icicle Crash
- U-turn
- Flare Blitz
- Rock Slide / Earthquake

It's Monke time! Galarian Darmanitan and Groudon form a deadly duo of physical breakers. Groudon is rather slow but can setup a Swords Dance on walls it can’t OHKO, while Darmanitan-G is way faster, especially when equipped with a Choice Scarf and has more immediate power thanks to Gorilla Tactics giving it a virtual Choice Band. Darmanitan-G can act as a revenge killer to delete fast Pokemon that may annoy Groudon but is also able to pivot out with U-turn giving it free switch-ins to abuse its deadly EdgeQuake coverage. Being able to make Groudon in safely against defensive Pokemon you threaten such as Necrozma-DM or Ho-Oh is huge, as your opponent will be in a though spot. Switching an offensive answer on Groudon means risking seeing a fast offensive Pokemon getting paralyzed, while trying to deal defensively with it requires you to have something able to deal with a +2 Groudon. Moreover, Darmanitan can help dealing with things like Zygarde, Landorus-T, Giratina and Tangrowth than could be hard to beat with this Groudon set. On the other hand, Groudon setup up the Sun to boost Darmanitan’s Flare Blitz damage and nuke things like Necrozma-DM. It can also cripple opposing Pokemon with Thunder Wave, which can greatly help Darmanitan, and especially the Banded set, as Darmanitan paper thin defenses prevent it from living any hit. Lastly, Groudon can help dealing with Ho-Oh that may come and scout what move Darmanitan wants to use (especially if you’re running Earthquake over Rock Slide).

I COULD BE BANNED!

Kyogre @ Choice Specs
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Thunder
- Ice Beam
- Water Spout
- Origin Pulse

Groudon has thunder wave, enough said. Kyogre slow as hell and is a special attacker and it destroys every single physical wall in the tier while its own answers in Eternatus or Blissey can be ripped apart by Groudon. Kyogre just enjoys Groudon paralyzing everything so that poseidon himself can drown everything unhindered. If Groudon paralyzes a Yveltal or Eternatus, this happens

Kyurem-black has a huge attack stat and boosting move dragon dance. Groudon breaks apart ndm which walls kyurem and paralyzes mons to help kyurem's middling speed. In return, Kyurem beats zygarde, lando-t and giratina which wall groudon.
Set:
Kyurem-Black @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Life orb

Zygarde @ Leftovers
Ability: Power Construct
EVs: 16 HP / 224 Atk / 36 Def / 232 Spe
Impish Nature
- Thousand Arrows
- Substitute
- Toxic
- Dragon Dance

Zygarde forms a double ground attacking duo that works to wear down Groudon's shared checks with it. Toxic wears down a lot of ground-type answers like Lunala and Buzzwole for Groudon to exploit later in the game, especially as Sub + Toxic can wear them down very quickly. Similarly Groudon helps break through some of the pokemon that Zygarde struggles to break due to its middling power.

Kyurem-White @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Turboblaze
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fusion Flare
- Draco Meteor
- Ice Beam
- Freeze-Dry
Kyurem-W kills mons like lando,Zygarde,Girantina etc who annoy groudon the most and kyurem is able to remove these mons and make sd groundon even more threataning additionaly groudon also helps kyurem-w by spreading paralysis which helps kyurem-w bypass its middiling speed tier groudon also is able to preassure steel types which are the mons who can eat up the hits of kyurem-w's ice moves. kyurem-w has fusion flare to hit the steels with but having another mon that can destroy steels defenetly dosent hurt aswell and both of them can preassure the most common steel type in the tier that being Necrozma-Dusk Mane with their fusion flare and Precipice blades.

:ss/eternatus:
Eternatus @ Black Sludge
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 240 HP / 252 SpD / 16 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dynamax Cannon
- Recover
- Flamethrower / Mystical Fire
- Toxic / Toxic Spikes

SpDef Eternatus checks Kyogre, Toxic's Giratina, 2HKO's any Father (given its not investing entirely into spdef) if running cannon, or can help bring out Twave targets for Groudon via Dragon Tail.

Yveltal @ Power Herb
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly/Adamant Nature
- Hone Claws
- Sky Attack
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch

I’ve been using this pairing on a hyper offense build and they compliment each other quite well imo.
1) Groudon can paralyze a lot of yveltal annoyers, such as etern, xern, and other yveltal, paving the way for set up
2) Yveltal in turn threatens giratina, lunala, tangrowth, and knocks lando/zygarde, making them much easier for groudon to eventually muscle through. It also threatens faster pokemon like calyrex and offensive ogre with sucker punch.
3) Sky attack actually has a 30% flinch chance, so if groudon misses a stone edge vs something like ho-oh or other yvel, you can still potentially get a paraflinch cheese KO

geoxern sucks but broken don should be able to make it work. Groudon destroys all steels and bulky mons (such as blissey) that xern dislikes and spreads yellow magic while xerneas shreds offense and helps don with cleric support.

:ss/Zarude-dada:

Dada is a great Groudon partherner since it can cover most part of Groudon checks. It can counter Zygarde, set up and absorb status against Giratina thanks to Leaf Guard, soft check none U-turn Yveltal sets and most importan, it can switch and kill Kyogre and Calyrex-S wich are the biggest threats to Groudon. All hail Dada!

Ho-Oh @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Sacred Fire
- Brave Bird
- Thunder Wave

Getting straight to the point , What is Groudon's ability ? Drought , what does it give? Sun, what does Sun do , boosts Fire type attacks. Offensive Ho-oh loves to throw a sun boosted Sacred Fire that will surely cause sunburns to your opponent. Standard offensive Ho-oh's runs Choice Band most of the times , however we are running Life orb, which surely gives you additional recoil and makes you think about clicking those Brave Birds , the reason is , In Band Ho-ohs you run Defog as 4th move generally , however this Ho-oh is played around keeping in mind , Groudon's Drought ability and utilizing it even if its for 1-2 turns. So i think rather getting choice locked i would rather take some life orb recoil chip if that allows me to maintain my offensive presence . Now Ho-oh is slow, its bulky , strong but pretty slow , thats why we have Thunder wav , we twave the eternatus that tries to scout it , and then with a little chip (which the eternatus will get if it tries to switch in on Ho-oh) , Earthquake kills it off (provided life orb is intact). Non life orb wont kill eternatus from 100% (Considering Eternatus comes in on a Sacred fire from which it takes 23 at max without sun, and Equake does 61 to it at max). Of course running offensive Ho-oh means a solid hazard removal measure is an absolute necessity, with proper support this core is pretty good. Groudon is a very good anti stealth rocks lead or getting off those twaves on lead Yveltal etc ,also setting the sun. Ho-oh+ Groudon surely packs some thick punches !!
