Aegislash uses its hybrid of a defensive and offensive ability in Stance Change along with a decent movepool to define its place in the metagame. King's Shield is used to punish foes if they try to use a contact move on Aegislash, which helps secure the matchup against threats like Choice Scarf Galarian Darmanitan and Dracovish, and Choice Band Grimmsnarl. Shadow Ball and Flash Cannon are powerful STAB moves that are used to hit opposing Ghost-, Psychic-, Fairy-, and Ice-types, such as Choice-locked Dragapult, Gardevoir, Sylveon, and Galarian Darmanitan. Shadow Sneak allows Aegislash to finish off faster Pokemon that have been whittled down by Aegislash's other moves. This is mainly used against Crustle and Sawk, as well as some other miscellaneous threats. 240 HP and 20 Defense EVs allow Aegislash to take a hit from Adamant Choice Scarf Excadrill. 248 Special Attack EVs and a Quiet nature allow Aegislash to output as much damage as possible, while also being able to undercut some other Aegislash on the mirror matchup. 0 Speed IVs allow Aegislash to Speed tie other Aegislash, in order to get a Weakness Policy boost.
Water-types such as Dracovish, Milotic, Golisopod, and Gyarados are very good teammates due to their ability to cover Aegislash's weakness to Fire- and Ground-type moves. In return, Aegislash resists Grass-type moves and can take Electric-type moves from Pokemon like Rillaboom and Dracozolt for these Pokemon. You can also use Pokemon that resist or have a very high tolerance to Fire- or Ground-type moves as a secondary option, such as Hydreigon, Dragapult, and Snorlax. In return, Aegislash resists moves from and can take down Fighting-types for Hydreigon and Snorlax, as well as Dragon-types for Dragapult. Aegislash is also weak to moves from Dark- and Ghost-types like Tyranitar, Hydreigon, Mimikyu, and opposing Aegislash. Grimmsnarl is super effective against both of these types, but you will need to watch out for super effective coverage from Pokemon like Mimikyu. In return for Grimmsnarl, Aegislash is immune to Poison-type moves and resists the Steel-type moves that can take down Grimmsnarl. Other options that beat Ghost-types include Hydreigon and Tyranitar, while Pokemon that beat Dark-types are Fighting-types like Sawk and Conkeldurr, or Fairy-types like Sylveon and Gardevoir. In return, Aegislash is immune to Fighting-types for Hydreigon and Tyranitar, and resists Flying-type moves for Sawk and Conkeldurr.
