[SET COMMENTS]
Gastrodon carves out a solid role on Water teams thanks to its secondary Ground typing, which grants it an Electric immunity and a unique set of tools. Earth Power and Earthquake are its main Ground-type STAB moves of choice with both providing solid utility. Earth Power is able to take advantage of Gastrodon's superior Special Attack to chunk foes like Toxapex, Arcahludon, and Pecharunt with ease, while Earthquake helps to ease matchups against specially bulky targets like Hisuian Goodra and Calm Mind Raging Bolt. Ice Beam grants Gastrodon a way to threaten Ground-immune targets like Landorus and scare away Dragon- and Flying-type threats like Dragapult, Dragonite, and Zapdos. Stealth Rock and Spikes provide pressure to threats like Meowscarda and Breloom that can come in to easily scare Gastrodon out. Sticky Hold is Gastrodon's ability of choice, preventing it from having its item removed from Trick and Knock Off from threats like Iron Valiant, Gholdengo, and Alolan Muk.
Toxapex serves as an incredible complement as a physical wall, being able to stave off Grass-type attacks from the likes of Amoonguss and Meowscarada. Toxapex also helps Gastrodon by spreading poison, which complements the chip damage from Gastrodon's entry hazards. Tentacruel can provide similar support to Toxapex while also being able to remove its foes' Heavy-Duty Boots via Knock Off and check the Ogerpon formes, which majorly threaten Gastrodon. Both strongly appreciate Electric-types like Raging Bolt, Regieleki, and Zapdos being dealt with effectively. Empoleon complements Gastrodon's Spikes by running Stealth Rock along with threatening Defoggers with a potential Competitive boost. Empoleon also helps by dealing with Freeze-Dry from the likes of Kyurem, Articuno, and Alolan Ninetales. Choice item users Keldeo and Greninja have their attacks greatly benefit from Gastrodon's hazards chipping down their switch-ins like Alolan Muk, Blissey, and Corviknight. In return, Keldeo provides Vacuum Wave as a way to deal with threats like Chien-Pao and Meowscarada, while Greninja provides Sludge Wave to remove the Ogerpon formes, which take advantage of Gastrodon. Primarina assists Gastrodon by taking on powerful Dark- and Dragon-types like Hisuian Samurott, Roaring Moon, and Dragapult. Ogerpon-W appreciates Gastrodon's hazards chipping down its switch-ins like Skarmory, and it also has access to Encore to stop setup from Kingambit and Raging Bolt, as they attempt to take advantage of Gastrodon's passivity.

Clear Smog helps Gastrodon stop Primarina, which can otherwise set up easily on it. Storm Drain has some utility at blocking certain Pokemon, notably Rotom-W variants with just Hydro Pump and Discharge along with Calm Mind Primarin using Surf into Gastrodon. However, this makes Gastrodon weak to Trick and Knock Off from the likes of Iron Valiant, Gholdengo, and Alolan Muk.
