[OVERVIEW]
Silvally-Steel is one of the best Steel-types PU has to offer. Its typing, alongside its respectable defensive stats, allow it to check prominent threats such as Sneasel, Guzzlord, and Ribombee. Silvally-Steel provides a lot of utility to teams through using momentum-gaining moves like Parting Shot and U-turn as well as being a great user of Defog. It can also take on a more offensive role with Swords Dance to break through its natural checks like Lanturn and Palossand. Unfortunately, it is held back by its lack of recovery, which leaves it easily worn down by entry hazards and strong attacks from Pokemon like Silvally-Fairy and Mesprit. Although they have to be wary of Rock Slide, Fire-types like Charizard and Talonflame are foes Silvally-Steel invites in and struggles to beat. While Parting Shot is a great tool to make a foe easier for a teammate to switch into, it can easily be taken advantage of by common Defiant users like Braviary and Passimian. Xatu is also unphased by bulkier variants of Silvally-Steel and can take advantage of Parting Shot, thanks to Magic Bounce, to weaken Silvally-Steel and generate momentum.
[SET]
name: Defensive Pivot
move 1: Multi-Attack
move 2: Flamethrower / Rock Slide
move 3: Defog / Toxic
move 4: Parting Shot / U-turn
item: Steel Memory
ability: RKS System
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 HP / 96 SpD / 160 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
Flamethrower allows Silvally-Steel to hit opposing Steel-types like Togedemaru and Magneton. Rock Slide is an alternative option to OHKO foes like Centiskorch, Talonflame, and Charizard. Toxic is an alternative to Defog that lets Silvally-Steel cripple foes like Jellicent and Talonflame that it can only pivot out against, in the latter's case assuming Silvally-Steel isn't running Rock Slide. Parting Shot is the preferred pivoting option to make switch-ins like Magmortar easier to switch into for another teammate; however, U-turn is helpful for the chip damage it provides and its ability to generate momentum against Xatu. 160 Speed EVs and a Jolly nature allow Silvally-Steel to outspeed Magmortar to get a Parting Shot off before it can attack.
Silvally-Steel should primarily be used to check foes like Guzzlord and Mesprit and generate momentum with its pivoting moves to bring partners in safely. Wallbreakers like Toxicroak and Sneasel can capitalize on the safe switches in Silvally-Steel can provide. Aromatisse can help check the Fighting-types that pressure Silvally-Steel and provide it with Wish support. Vaporeon can likewise provide Wish support but also forms a pivoting core with Silvally-Steel and checks Fire-types like Charizard. Other Water-types like Lanturn and Jellicent likewise pair well with Silvally-Steel. Talonflame can help deal with foes like Virizion and Centiskorch, the latter being a Fire-type the aforementioned Water-types struggle to check reliably.
[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Multi-Attack
move 3: Flame Charge
move 4: Rock Slide / Explosion
item: Steel Memory
ability: RKS System
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
Swords Dance allows Silvally-Steel to break through most of its usual checks, notably allowing it to 2HKO Palossand and OHKO Rhydon, making it a decent wallbreaker. Flame Charge provides coverage to hit opposing Steel-types like Alolan Sandslash. It also provides a Speed boost, which prevents faster foes like Talonflame and Choice Scarf Passimian from revenge killing Silvally-Steel, making it a potential late-game wincon. Rock Slide provides necessary coverage to OHKO Fire-types like Centiskorch and Charizard. Explosion is an alternative option that can OHKO these foes as well as bulky Water-types like Vaporeon and Lanturn at the cost of Silvally-Steel fainting; however, one must be wary of these Water-types avoiding it with Protect.
Swords Dance Silvally-Steel fits best on offensive teams that appreciate its wallbreaking and late-game sweeping potential. Heliolisk and Virizion can help pressure the bulky Water-types that give Silvally-Steel issues. Xatu can provide dual screens support to aid Silvally-Steel in finding opportunities to set up a Swords Dance more easily. Guzzlord and Whimsicott can check foes like Mesprit and Alolan Exeggutor to make up for Silvally-Steel's lack of bulk on this set.
