All Gens RoAPL IX - Week Two

• Follow all rules listed here.
• Schedule via Smogon VMs. It's easier for me to make decisions for activity calls when I can actually see what went down with scheduling.
• If you are unable to schedule with your opponent, please let your managers know ASAP so they can communicate that to me or the other team's managers for a potential substitute.
• Substitutions may be made after a week has started. When making a substitution, please tag myself, the managers of the opposing team, and all of the players affected by the substitute to ensure that everyone is made aware. Players who have already played in the week or were subbed out in the same week cannot be subbed back in.
• If a match remains incomplete by the time of the deadline, it will be subject to an activity call.
• Replays are mandatory. Not only are they useful for confirming wins, they contribute to usage stats and allow the people who couldn't watch the games live to watch them later.
• Managers: Please send me your lineups in the same format that I used to post pairings. It makes it much easier to post future rounds more quickly.

Fun fact:
Vileman's Raikou dealt more than the high roll to Chiles's Gengar thus revealing it was likely DV'd for HP Water. However, the Gengar already revealed to have Tbolt Ice Punch Dynamic Punch and Explosion. Was this all a strategy Chiles adopted to get into Vileman's head or did he unlock the legendary 5 moves Gengar?

Now for the actual reviews of teams in each match (I'll only briefly touch on the games if I feel like it):

Estarossa vs LpZ

Estarossa and LpZ an ALL TIME CLASSIC... except this isn't gen2 under used!!!
As a UU fan, I thought this would be fun for these two players' history together and I don't think I was disappointed. They managed to prove that their skills as mainstays in all of the Underused metagames extends far beyond that. Estarossa brought a very fat double normal resist + starmie spin core, privileging longevity over all out offense. It's quite unusual but it looks like it has some functional benefits, allowing him to dictate the pace in the hopes of securing a win path for his mono snorlax. He looks to have a pursuit roar eq ttar, something unusual to see when paired with Steelix, but it ended up working out against Lpz's double electric offense. I'm not a huge fan of Lpz's build and I've seen it used before. The thief Gar is a nice edit if you can get Snorlax's lefties. What I'm not a huge fan of is the susceptibility over all to a Curse eq lax or just other eq users.

Ziloxx vs Zokuru

I think this game is an example of how the higher players will try to adopt certain strategies that are specific counters to Zokuru's stall, at least as far as their playing ability is concerned. Zilo brought a Growth AA Vaporeon with Mixed ttar, something that's very annoying for the likes of Mono lax Curse Tar and Raikou. But I think the real surprising part about all this for me was that Hidden Power Electric Cloyster actually managed to annoy the hell out of Starmie, allowing to force a trade of Zilo's spiker for Zokuru's only good answer to Mixed tar in Sub Surf Spin Starmie. Zok claims in the chat that if he had brought Toxic on Skarm the match might have gone differently. Given the lack of poison immunities on Zilo's team, perhaps he was right, but we can never know for sure.

Vani vs Eg0r

I confessed to Eg0r that I could not decide if his team is great or if it has a lot of wholes in it. Nidoking Machamp is something already seen and done, but paired with Golem it feels as though someone is asking to lose to the likes of Zapdos, Jynx and Starmie. Nothing a good ol' sleep talk eq lax can't fix. All in all, this matchup for Eg0r was advantageous with Vani's double Normal offense being extremely susceptible to Machamp. I think Eg0r might have had to capitalize off of double switches with Machamp a little more. I think Vani might have been preparing for their original opponent so I can't blame them for having taken this challenge with only half an hour notice against someone they didn't know.

GlFGno vs Siatam

GlFGno brought an uncommon double thief + ttar build except Jynx is the second Thief user and not Gengar. Normally I'd say that it's a scary build to face because nobody likes having leftovers stolen but Siatam managed to mitigate Jynx's threat level by having Cloyster lose it's leftovers and comfortably take the lovely kiss. Personally I'm not a fan of slapping Jynx Nidoking and Ttar together because I think they all seem to struggle with Monolax, who can go toe to toe with them for days, which is what ended up happening against GLFGno's battered ttar. Siatam's screech tar + steelix was just adding to the detrimental state of GLFGno's team. Siatam's build looks like a spin on something he brought this SPL, changing 4 attacks ttar to a screech tar (With no pursuit despite Monolax???).

Jonathan Madden vs Lily

Jonathan brought a strong double normal resist with the strong Mixed tar + Steelix and a Jynx in there as well. Pretty strong I'd say. Unfortunately for Lily, they never got their gameplan going. I'd say the team used by Lily is likely the Fear team from SPL XI (Jynx Golem Zapdos) or some variation of it.

Jester vs Thor

Jester brought a team that is pretty much a relic from the Borat days and named it accordingly with Rolling Stones song titles. Machamp + Vaporeon boom offense is a build some might argue does not hold up to the fast pace but our 2 times Callous invitee is proving us wrong. Thor brought a Machamp + Ttar build of his own, but somehow I think the Screech tar doesn't really matter much when facing opposing Machamp, a mon that might use the "forced" switches for its own advantages. The crit on the tar was unfortunate.

Chiles vs Vileman

Vileman was one of two players to bring a double electric, something I would say in a team tour given the popularity of the build. Yet his team was unique, with the combo of Eggy, Golem, Cloy and what looked to be a boom lax (Earthquake and Thunder were used). I find many traditional double elecs to be bad because builders tend not tofactor in a way to actually defeat Snorlax and making the offensive presence of Zapdos and Raikou redundant and annoying but I think Vileman got it right. Probably best team of the week. Chiles brought a team I think I've seen him use before with Tar, Eggy and Gengar and Whirlwind Zapdos. It's alright but he couldn't quite explode as many pokes as he would have liked.

Iguana vs Nael222

Nael brought a Tentacruel stall in what I would argue was a good matchup for him. Iguana (the madman) brought NO electric, something we've seen before in GSC Invitational. He certainly had a shot at winning with the Quagsire and Curse Flame lax combo, regardless of what ended up going down (I hate timer wins but it's not his fault). Still, I'm not sure if it would have gone well considering the susceptibility to Toxic and over all pressure of a double spin team and sleep talk Skarmory.

CONCLUSION:

This was easily the most redundant use of Pokemon squads I've ever seen. It's not a bad thing but I'm pretty sure I've seen every possible configuration imaginable of the same 7 offensive pokemon in Jynx, Nidoking, Machamp, Golem, Tyranitar, Gengar and Steelix plus the big 3, yet NO TWO TEAMS WERE THE SAME. Let's not forget that every game had a fucking Eq Snorlax. I don't know if all 16 players conspired to bring EQ lax but this was somewhat repetitive and annoying. I hope I'll get to see more good stuff down the line.

[Shing]

Got 2/6, yikes. Let's see if I'll get a better score through the tournament. Regardless this week has been interesting where people brought more offensive teams, noticeably where half of the teams had an Infernape in their team, which is very sick since Nape's one of my favorite mons and I really like how it works in DPP OU. I do expect in the later weeks there will be more bulky and stall teams as scouting becomes more impactful there, so no more of those glass cannons unless the scout consists of the opponent bringing teams that can be cheesed pretty hard.

DPP OU: BluBirD vs Susciety
Susciety played pretty well from beginning to end, and the turns he took the risks gave him the win here. BluBirD showcased a good amount of surprise techs to take advantage of D4's lack of experience in early positions. But around T7, it felt like BluBirD made some errors as he lost a ton of momentum and lacked the opportunity to make any comebacks. Makes me think that Susciety will find the right moves to win the game. Still not a one-sided match, but I think Susciety has a better chance to win here.
DPP OU: TLTK vs TyCarter
Probably a closer matchup that's not going to last a long one since I don't expect both of them to bring any stall teams. What I do expect is that both of them are going to bring really annoying teams that aren't going to be fun to play against as they did in W1. The winner will be the one that gets their win-con started. I think TLTK has a better chance to win as he's able to execute and abuses them harder. Tycarter in turn will somewhat not make the best decisions which could end up giving TLTK some key opportunities to start screwing things up or like react poorly if they're in a tricky position. Somehow I do feel like both of them can choke and make a bad play by clicking too fast at some turns not gonna lie, so perhaps a very chaotic game?

DPP OU: Lazuli vs D4 Repertoire
I just learned a few days ago that Lazuli was Haru and I just felt cheated out of this prediction. I feel like Lazuli is just going to bring some nasty type of unordinary offense/para that D4 and their team have never seen itself bc the stuff they brought vs me at Pokemon Perfect PL last year just threw me off guard from the preview. D4 did play around with the surprise techs from BluBirD so perhaps if they can play around they can win. But Lazuli's EXP and knowledge in the tier overall feel like they'll sweep D4 this week.
DPP OU: JabbaTheGriffin vs Stallion
Heard some good hype between these two from the post above already and I am hyped up. It does make sense since both of them have been on Smogon since 2006/7 and perhaps longer that's out of my knowledge. I'm betting Jabba to win due to their performance last week, however, I hope Stallion will get some justice from the last week for those unfortunate turns at Retro Cup and RoaPL so this match could be a good one. Please let me know when you guys are playing thanks <3


DPP OU: Gondra vs Le Don
If you could ignore the robbery the game did to Gondra at the end, you can see that they played their game extremely well since they got a lot of right turns. If they keep playing like that, I can see them performing pretty strong at RoaPL overall, and makes me confident to see them snipe another win this week. Le Don may have gotten a bad MU, but I do feel like they still had some flaws as I felt like they got kinda tilted in mid-match; around after the turn with Nape and Gliscor's interaction last week. With that said Le Don can definitely win this in a clear fashion if they get the right matchup against them, so it's a player matchup that could go either way really.
DPP OU: Laurel vs Pideous
This is basically an SPL vs SPL type of matchup since their skill level is that high. Whoever makes the better plays in the long term will win this match, so expect a LONG one where the mid to endgame will be safe but also a close one. I'll still bet on Pideous since he's always pushing himself to be ahead of everyone, but sometimes Laurel really doesn't care how modern you are as long he's able to outplay regardless of what. Definitely one of the stacked matches for this RoaPL.


The matches have been fun to watch since week 1 tends to be very different from the others. Will say there were some really shitty luck moments that sucked, like with me where I got bailed from being outplayed, putting myself in bad positions due to making obvious turns, and dodging two fire blasts that would have otherwise swept me. There's more than that to criticize, but I'm just saying I'll make sure to not play super trash like that rofl. Gonna be fun playing against Sharow since I've met them so many times at ladder and a recent tournament set as well, so I'm super excited to play versus him in a team tournament environment.
