Rhydon [QC 0/2]

[OVERVIEW]

- Rhydon excels as a Stealth Rock setter thanks to the combination of its solid Eviolite-complemented bulk and typing, as well as its great offensive presence along with the Rock-Typing which allows it to reliably beat Fire-Types such as Salazzle and Talonflame as well as Flying-type defoggers like Braviary and Xatu. Additionally, a strong secondary STAB in Ground means that it has a good matchup against Steel-types like Copperajah and Heatproof Bronzong. However, Rhydon is dependent on Eviolite for bulk which makes it vulnerable to Knock Off. It is also susceptible to chip and status damage since it lacks reliable recovery and cannot run Leftovers. Rhydon is also weak to the plethora of Water-and Grass-Type pokemon in the tier as well as common coverage options such as Grass Knot from Heliolisk and Surf from Exploud which harms its viability as a standalone check to these Pokemon.

Set Details
====
Stealth Rock is mandatory for essentially any competitive team, and Rhydon is a great user of the move thanks to its ability to threaten common forms of entry hazard prevention, such as Xatu, Braviary and Rotom-C with heavy damage. Earthquake hits opposing Stealth Rock setters such as Copperajah and is its best form of damage against neutral targets such as Vaporeon. Stone Edge allows Rhydon to OHKO or 2HKO most forms of entry hazard removal. Alternatively, Rock Blast can be used to deal with Pokemon like Substitute Braviary and Salazzle better at the cost of Stone Edge's greater power. Swords Dance enables Rhydon to become a fearsome wallbreaker capable of 2HKOing defensive walls like Vaporeon and Sylveon.

Rhydon lacks any form of reliable recovery so wish support from pokemon such as Vaporeon and Sylveon is extremely beneficial. Rotom-Mow is also a great partner for Rhydon due to its resistances to both Grass-and Water-Type moves. Similarly, Dragon-Types such as Guzzlord and Dragalge also make for good teammates. Rhydon relies on Eviolite for its bulk so Knock Off absorbers such as itemless Vileplume are good partners. Pokemon like Garbodor and Weezing form good hazard-stacking cores with Rhydon as they appreciate its ability to beat most forms of entry hazard prevention. In return, they can switch into Grass- and Fighting-Type attacks for Rhydon.

Other Options
====

Rhydon can run a more defensive EV spread of EVs: 252 HP / 168 SpD / 88 Spe in order to check pokemon like Salazzle better. However, this is usually outclassed by more offensive versions which also have the ability to sufficiently wallbreak. Megahorn can be used to 2HKO grass types like Celebi and Rotom-C on the switch However, most grasses are 2HKOed by Stone Edge which relegates Megahorn to a niche option.

Checks and Counters
====

**Grass-Types**: Grass-types such as Dhelmise, Decidueye and Celebi can switch into most of Rhydon's attacks and threaten it with an OHKO in return. Dhelmise can also remove Stealth Rocks using Rapid Spin

**Water-Types**: Bulky Water types such as Vaporeon can switch into Rhydon and KO it with scald. Mantine can KO Rhydon but needs to be wary of Stone Edge

**Fighting-Types**: Although they struggle to switch in, Sirfetch'd and Passimian can easily OHKO Rhydon with Close Combat.

** Faster Attackers with Super Effective Coverage**: Pokemon like Heliolisk and Exploud cannot switch into Rhydon safely but they all outspeed and can OHKO it with super effective coverage moves.

QC seemed in agreement that Rhydon should be running offensive sets, so please adjust that first paragraph to reflect this edit. Essentially, you still check Salazzle and friends well enough without the extra bulk investment, but you can give a mention in other options to bulkier spreads. Smack Down lacks any meaningful usage because Levitate Bronzong is pretty uncommon; you're pretty much just good to rely on team support to better handle it.

Right, so it's probably unwise to plagiarize the work of the user who leads this section. I'm quite good at remembering my writing tendencies even years after the fact :|

Several parts of this are straight ripped from the SM NU Rhydon analysis, and other parts just have examples changed to feign current metagame relevancy but end up failing because you didn't put in the slightest modicum of effort to fact check yourself. Passimian OHKOing Rhydon with Close Combat? Interesting.

This is being reassigned.
