[OVERVIEW]
* Porygon2 functions as a bulky Trick Room setter with support options in Eerie Impulse, Icy Wind, and a key support ability, Trace. Porygon2 can also forfeit some bulk and Trace for a more offensive set with its large coverage and Download, allowing it to pick up key OHKOs on meta threats such as Landorus, as well as both Urshifu formes and Tornadus at +1.
* One of Porygon2's biggest strengths is its enormous bulk with Eviolite and using Terastallization extremely effectively, as well as great longevity with Recover, allowing it to set Trick Room multiple times in a single game. Due to this, Porygon2 appreciates Fake Out support to get up Trick Room easier, damage reduction from Pokemon such as Incineroar, Landorus-T, and Snarl Raging Bolt, and pivots that can allow sweepers to hit the field after Trick Room is set up. Common partners include Incineroar, Rillaboom, Amoonguss, and bulky sweepers such as Ursaluna.
* Porygon2 fits best on teams that don't rely on Trick Room, yet feel as though their team would benefit from the option. Thanks to Porygon2's incredible flexibility, it doesn't actually need Trick Room to function best, working just as well outside of Trick Room, trading positively with its huge bulk and tapping into key weaknesses with BoltBeam coverage.
* Porygon2 checks include Pokemon that disrupt its usually passive playstyle. Pokemon such as Incineroar can remove Porygon2's Eviolite and make it far less stable defensively. Snarl Pokemon such as Chi-Yu and Raging Bolt can make Porygon2 a sitting duck, making it far less of an issue offensively. Finally, Porygon2 generally struggles against Amoonguss balance teams, as Amoonguss can threaten to use Spore and restore the HP of stronger threats even while Porygon2 is awake due to Porygon2's inability to OHKO it.
[SET]
Bulky Disruption (Porygon2) @ Eviolite
Ability: Trace / Download
Tera Type: Poison / Ghost / Fairy / Flying
EVs: 252 HP / 196 Def / 60 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tera Blast / Thunderbolt
- Eerie Impulse / Ice Beam / Icy Wind
- Trick Room
- Recover
[SET COMMENTS]
* Eerie Impulse lets Porygon2 completely blow by special attackers such as Flutter Mane and Chi-Yu in Trick Room, Pokemon Porygon2 is unable to KO quickly. While Trace is generally preferred, Download can be strong on BoltBeam support sets where the boost may completely swing damage rolls. Tera Blast is generally preferred over Tri-Attack due to Porygon2's flexibility with Terastallization.
* The given EV spread maximizes Porygon2's ridiculous bulk, resulting in moves such as Adamant Chien-Pao's Sacred Sword never 3HKOing. Other important damage calculations include always surviving Timid Choice Specs Chi-Yu's Overheat, Special Attack Booster Energy Flutter Mane never 2HKOing with Moonblast, and nearly always surviving Sword of Ruin-boosted Close Combat from both Urshifu formes.
* Porygon2's Tera type will usually depend on the composition it's part of. Tera Ghost allows Trick Room teams without redirection or Fake Out to get their own Trick Room up more easily against opposing Fake Out, Tera Fairy removes Porygon2's only weakness and provides key resistances against foes such as Urshifu formes, and Tera Poison is generally a strong typing across the board.
[SET]
Offensive Support (Porygon2) @ Eviolite
Ability: Download
Tera Type: Poison / Fairy / Ghost / Flying
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 116 SpA / 132 SpD / 4 Spe
Quiet / Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Ice Beam / Tera Blast
- Thunderbolt / Tera Blast / Shadow Ball
- Recover
- Trick Room
[SET COMMENTS]
* Offensive Porygon2 can play outside of Trick Room, absorbing hits and trading positively into much of the metagame whiles till providing solid support. Its coverage depends on the team and set; many Iron Hands-based teams will choose to drop Thunderbolt for Tera Blast on Tera Flying and Tera Fairy sets, while Tera Ghost sets sometimes use Shadow Ball. It's important to note that with Download, Tera Blast will use the higher stat, meaning a Quiet nature is preferred to have a stronger hitting physical Tera Blast when Porygon2 Terastallizes offensively.
* The given EV spread lets Thunderbolt KO most Tornadus sets and all Urshifu-R sets after a Special Attack boost from Download while still surviving most double-ups such as Moonblast from non-boosting Flutter Mane followed by pretty much any physical attack.
* This set is generally stronger on teams with Trick Room as an afterthought, as it's generally greedy to invest this much into offensive stats when Trick Room must go up.
