Paleomons

Welcome to Paleomons! In this mod, we will be creating an SV OU-based micrometa of Pokémon based on real critters from the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras. If you're a big dinosaur fan or if you just want another mod to play competitively, this is the place for you!

We'll have a few different kinds of slates, so be sure to check the slate opening post to see which we're currently using. The types of slates will be as follows:
Fossil reworks will take existing fossil Pokémon and revert them into their ‘original’ forms, likely shedding the Rock typing and gaining new tools in order to fit within the Paleomons meta. These changes can be very broad, affecting typing, stats, movepool, and abilities.

and without further ado, let's open

We'll start off with the Paleomons classic, fossil reworks! For this slate, we'll be covering fossil Pokemon introduced in the first 3 generations (specifically in Kanto and Hoenn). The rules for submission are as follows:
  • You can sub 1 to 5 of the pokémons chosen in this slate (reworks on existing Pre-Evolutions can also be made if you want)
  • Make sure your sub would be balanced in an SV OU power level (TERA IS BANNED so do not account for that), so no 200 Attack Huge Power Kabutops please.
  • Custom Elements are allowed, as long as they have something different from already existing abilities/moves and are relatively simple to code (no custom field effects - we're learning from last gen lol. Also, if you think it's codable but our coder disagrees, then you'd better be prepared to code it yourself if it wins.)
  • Also please don't resub winners from last gen lol. We're looking for a new meta here, not a repeat of last gen.
  • edit: To clarify, any Pokemon not currently in Generation 9 will instead use its Generation 8 movepool minus dexited moves (aka moves that are unusable in SV).

Role: Cool fast defensive pivot, with Poltergeist giving it a solid offensive tool as well, though its lack of a good Flying STAB and coverage should hold it back enough to make defensive counterplay fairly reasonable.
Flavor: Aerodactyl soared through the prehistoric skies at night, snatching prey from their nests as they slept.

Role: Fat Steel to start us off right. Main distinguishing factor on this one besides the stellar utility options is Tinted Lens making its U-Turns hit everything hard.

Cradily
Type
:

Abilities: Suction Cups, Storm Drain, Natural Cure
Stats: 86 | 70 | 85 | 97 | 130 | 52 [BST= 520]

Added Moves: Growth, Recover, Toxic
Removed Moves: None!

Role: Cradily my beloved. Special wall and professional mbeamer. Storm Drain is better on offensive sets to match up better against waters and get that free +1, while Natural Cure is better on defensive sets to shrug off Toxics.
Lore: Not much different from vanilla Cradily. Giving it Toxic seems fair both competitively and lore-wise since the pokedex talks about it using acid/digestive fluid to eat prey.

Armaldo
Type
:

Abilities: Battle Armor, Intimidate, Tough Claws
Stats: 95 | 110 | 110 | 55 | 80 | 70 [BST= 520]

Added Moves: Aqua Cutter, Iron Head, Night Slash
Removed Moves: Iron Defense, Rock Blast, Swords Dance

Role: Great Tusk-type beat. Backbone utility tank that can boost offense or defense with tough claws and intim respectively, though doesn't have boosting options
Lore: Gaining intim is based on Armaldo and its prevo having false eye patterns, Tough Claws is based on the pokedex mentioning its large, sharp claws multiple times

Stats: 70 HP/60 ATK/70 DEF/130 SP ATK/110 SP DEF/55 SPD = 515

Removed Moves: None, though move Crunch, Rollout, and Rock Blast to TMs, tutors, or egg moves as appropriate
Replacement Moves: Psychic, Dazzling Gleam, and Moonblast
New TMs/Tutors: All Fairy- and Psychic-type TMs

Role:
An excellent type combination defensively, Fairy/Water offers six different resistances, three of which are to types with a lot of powerful special attacks - making this kind of Omastar a reliable switch-in to Fire, Water, and Ice attackers and retaliating with a massively powerful Moonblast. Psychic as coverage is useful against Poison-types that might otherwise threaten it, and it still learns a lot of Ice-type moves to take care of Grass, and even against Electric it retains Earth Power - its main issue is arguably that there's so may different moves it can use that it will be forced to leave a blind spot open by picking just four. Alongside the usual useful item choices such as Heavy-Duty Boots, there's also something to be said for an Assault Vest set that simply goes all-in on two STAB moves and as many coverage options as possible, though a Shell Smash sweeper set to patch up its low Speed might be worth playing with as well. It's worth noting that its physical defense is actually lower than Kantonian Omastar's but since the types it has to worry about seem to bank more on special attacks, this isn't as much of a concern as it could be, though it obviously wouldn't appreciate a Solar Blade to the face. Magic Bounce is a solid insurance policy in case anyone tries to cripple it with a status that reduces its special-attacking power, as it's mainly here to wreck face instead of having to settle with support duty and would thus do well to ward off anything that could possibly hold it back from doing what it does best.

Flavor:
The above image by The New 151 is arguably what inspired me to make this variant and so its design takes a lot of design cues from it. That said, there's several differences from the pic itself - the eyes and beak are the same as Kantonian Omastar's, for one, and while it has six long tentacles around and under the beak (in a manner not unlike a wizard's beard), its body is purple, not blue. The spiraling, twisting shell is also entirely made of rainbow-colored opal, though probably with just four colors (red, yellow, green, light blue) instead of six for simplicity; the shape also invokes a wizard's tower with a large red crystal ball at the tip suggesting the jewel on the end of a wizard staff (and incidentally, this is where it fires its beam- and spell-like attacks from), which also keeps it from looking so... unfortunately shaped. The end of the shell itself splits into two short, curling "tails" that grip onto the sides of this orb, furthering the wizard staff imagery.

For both stages of this line, the shiny has a body color like Kantonian Omanyte and Omastar, but the shell has pink, orange, sea-blue, and purple colors, and a blue orb instead of red.

"These Omastar have colorful shells which radiate a mystical energy that they can use to attack. The sight of these shells entrances anyone who sees them, giving them an inexplicable urge to fiercely protect them."
"In the past, the fossilized shell of this Omastar was thought to have belonged to an ancient sea god. As reliable as it is in battle, many trainers who use one have spoken of many strange things happening around them."

See the above image for reference, again from The New 151, though just so this variant of mine is distinguishable from it, the body is purple and the shell is entirely made of opal, with just four colors (red, yellow, green, blue) for a less complex palette. The center of the shell also has the same red orb that the Omastar variant has on its tip, the shell itself coiling around it.

"Omanyte build their shells using minerals absorbed from the surrounding water. Sometimes, their shell becomes made of a particular kind of beautiful crystal with mysterious properties."
"For some reason, the shell of this kind of Omanyte is viewed with great reverence by many people. In the past, these shells were recovered specifically to be sold as good-luck charms."

Obvious TPP reference is obvious lol. That being said, though, there actually is a more legitimate reason for the flavor describing this guy as being revered as a deity in the past than just the memes - the very name "ammonite" comes from the Latin ammōnis (cornū) ("horn of Ammon"), as it was called by Pliny the Elder, referencing the way ammonite shells are curled like the horns of a ram, the symbol of the aforementioned Egyptian god. Since the Egyptian pantheon is frequently associated with magic in general, I felt it fitting to give this line a wizard theme as well to further justify the Fairy typing, with the way the orb that Omastar ponders is held on its shell being reminiscent of a solar disk motif.

The kind of mineral comprising the shell of this variant is opal, which is formed from minerals accumulating when water containing them flows through a space underground; as new151 notes in the link above, there is a kind of organic opal called ammolite that's formed from the minerals ammonite shells were made from in life - and that was what their own redesigns for this line were based on.

Effect: Ignores target's defense and evasion stat changes, boosted by Sharpness (Sacred Sword clone)
New TMs/Tutors: All other Steel-type TMs and all slicing moves that can be learned via TM/tutor

Role:
Ow, the edge! With its new Sharpness ability (owing to Kabutops often being stated to slice into prey with its claws) and a new signature move that takes full advantage of it, this variety of Kabutops is here to shred through the opposition with blinding speed. While it had to sacrifice a good chunk of its physical Defense and a smidge of its Special Defense to bump up its Speed, that's a small price to pay for making use of two STAB moves backed by a Sharpness boost to deadly effect on damn near anything that isn't resistant to either type (and only Water itself resists both). Its excellent typing packs so many resistances that it can switch into a variety of opponents and then hack them to bits with whichever of its STAB moves is needed, and with either Agility or Swords Dance along with the right EV investment for either, it can quickly become a terrifying sweeper in the right hands. Its main fault is that of the three types it's weak to, it only has Aerial Ace to take care of Fighting-types, but while Ground is easily bested by Aqua Cutter or whichever other Water attacks it chooses to run, Electric-types, especially special attackers, are basically in for a free shellfish entree as long as they can stay out of range of its lethal claws, which for many of those isn't difficult to do if it isn't running Agility.

Flavor:
The above image by new151 is probably the closest I can think of to what I have in mind for this Kabutops variant, in fact being an almost one-to-one match, even down to each of its hands having two claws instead of one: a long, razor-sharp, katana-shaped blade and a smaller, shorter hook like on a crab pincer. About the only things I'd change about this design would be to have its legs be digitigrade and resembling those of a theropod instead of the somewhat human-like legs of Kantonian Kabutops to match the speed increase, along with having the head be narrower laterally and a little more streamlined-looking (though I guess it could be in this artwork). Because it learns both Smart Strike and Iron Head via TM, the head also sports a laterally flattened, bladed horn extending from the pyrite crystal on its skull, shaped a bit like a wakizashi, in reference to the cranial horns some trilobite species evolved for territorial combat.

The shiny sprites for both stages would have darker yellowish gray crystals instead of gold, but otherwise resemble Kantonian Kabuto and Kabutops in their color scheme.

"The armor of this variety of Kabutops is surprisingly lightweight, and its sharp edges cut through water and air alike. It can swiftly chase down its prey both on land and in the sea."
"With blindingly quick slashes of its razor-sharp claws, it can cut down victims before they even get the chance to react. In the past, warriors used its claws as fearsome weapons."

New TMs/Tutors: All other Steel-type TMs and all slicing moves that can be learned via TM/tutor

Flavor:
The above Kabuto redesign by The New 151 is probably the best I can think of for this variant, but with one important difference: the frontmost crystal on its shell is replaced by a long, jagged, stalagmite-like horn made of pyrite, vertically flattened and razor-edged with a shape not unlike a combat knife or a flint arrowhead. Aimed forward like a swordfish snout but angled slightly upward, it's used for territorial combat, self-defense, and to cut apart prey into bite-sized pieces. Basically, this thing is what you'd get if you crossed a pyritized fossil with the "Knife Roomba" meme, along with a samurai helmet for good measure.

"A variety of Kabuto known for the knife-like horn on its head. It uses this horn to attack the legs and bellies of anything that tries to prey on it."
"To reinforce its shell and horn, it feeds on silt from the seabed and digests the metallic particles within. This gives its body a pretty, golden sheen."

Like the Omanyte line I also conceived for this slate, this line more closely integrates aspects of the fossilization process itself, though in this case it owes more to pyrite or "fool's gold", an iron disulfide mineral that sometimes takes up the space where buried bones and shells were, resulting in fossils basically made of a gold-like metal. The New 151's Kabuto line redesign informed much of this variant including the samurai armor theme and the fact that the claws are shaped like kabutowari, Japanese knives with a hook near the base of the blade, but because pyrite is technically mostly iron, this line replaces the Rock typing with Steel. Pyrite is also of a lighter weight than iron which is why this line can afford to be faster; granted, in reality its sulfur content makes it useless for making anything you could from iron, knives especially, but they don't need to know that...

New TMs/Tutors: All other Dark-type TMs along with all Fire- and Dragon-type TMs except Draco Meteor, plus Spikes

Role:
Aerodactyl has a reasonably high BST in canon already, so I didn't feel the need to change it by adding any more points than it already has. What I did do however was add a little emphasis to the Dark-type moves it can learn, what with going for the throat of its prey with its teeth and all. Essentially, this is what would happen if you taped a jet turbine to a Honchkrow, shaved off some of its feathers, and gave it a shitload of knives: a blindingly fast and brutal Dark-type sweeper that's as durable as tissue paper, but which blithely ignores that as it tears its foes to pieces with such STAB options as Throat Chop and Tearing Talon. It also has the same speed as regular Aerodactyl which enables it to employ some fun support tricks like Taunt and Torment, and even Will-O-Wisp, Spikes, and Stealth Rock. In the right hands it can make a fun suicide lead that can set up hazards and take down at least one enemy before going down, but its capabilities in sweeping are hindered by its virtually nonexistent defenses and few coverage options to help it take care of its type weaknesses, Fire attacks as an anti-Ice policy notwithstanding. Since even neutral damage is fatal to it, though, type effectiveness means little here - its overall fragility is more than made up for by its aptitude for hitting as fast and hard as it can.

Flavor:
Overall, this design most closely resembles Mega Aerodactyl, complete with all those spikes sprouting from its everywhere, but with several differences. Most notable is the fact that its torso is covered in ratty, hair-like filaments like what Archeops has, but black in color; a ring of this same fluff forms a ruff arund the base of the stooped, vulture-like neck, and some more of it sticks out from the back of the head to form a crest that flares out backwards like a sort of mane. Its otherwise scaly skin is brick red with spikes and horns of pale gray - made of exposed bone here, not rock - and vivid yellow eyes with slitted pupils, and its wing membrane, which is bright red with striped black edging, extends all the way down to the lower leg instead of just stopping at the hip, for better control of the trailing edge of the wing in flight. The horns on its head curve upwards a bit to resemble devil horns, and its snout is longer and thinner than on Kantonian Aerodactyl; notably, in place of a long chin spike like the mega, there is a shorter triangular one, laterally flattened like a blade and pointing straight down, and a matching blade on the top of the snout invokes the beak crests of an Ornithocheirus. The upper jaw also has two long fangs near the front which are visible when the mouth is closed. The arrowhead on the end of the tail is gray like the body spikes and is also larger and longer, and can be used as a spear to stab at opponents. Its shiny coloration resembles Mega Aerodactyl, with the fluff on the torso having a purplish tint.

"The original form of Aerodactyl was discovered only recently. It seems to resemble a form of it from another region, except for the hair-like scales covering its body."
"Instead of stone, the blades jutting out of its body are made of bone - and constantly growing. It snaps the tips of its blades off as weapons so they can grow back stronger."

With its long tail and toothy jaws, Aerodactyl ironically seems to be based on basal pterosaurs such as Rhamphorhynchus rather than actual pterodactyloid pterosaurs, which are a more specific clade within the group. Keeping this in mind and also trying to balance more modern depictions of my favorite animal group with the monstrous, draconic feel of the original design, I based this form off of Sordes, the "hairy devil" pterosaur which was one of the first pterosaurs discovered to have had the hair-like scales or pycnofibers that pterosaurs in general are now known to have had. Given the name etymology and the fact that Aerodactyl learns a lot of Dark-type moves, I gave it a demonic theme as well as basing it a little off of the more retro-pterodactyl-like depictions of Ridley in the more recent Metroid games. It also owes a lot in its design to Mega Aerodactyl as well, due to some of the latter's dex entries stating that some scholars believe that was what Aerodactyl really looked like in prehistoric times.

Role: Aerodactyl has always had a decently large dragon movepool, especially getting dragon dance, a move usually reserved for only dragon like Pokémon. However this dragon typing gives it a potent and powerful offensive profile to use. Aerodactyl has always also felt like a very psuedo legendary style pokemon compared to the other fossils, with it being the only fossil with a mega evolution. These extra stats will give it a greater defensive and a better mixed offensive profile.

Description: No way, budget Thundurus-T (and by an extent Kilowattrel)?! Jokes aside this is your basic fast special attacker, with good a speed tier and special attack, being able to use items such as Specs or Life Orb for a more instant damage with moves like Hurricane and Thunderbolt, or Heavy Duty Boots for a safe switch-in on rocks. Volt Absorb allows this pokemon to regain a bit of HP when getting hit with an Electric move, while also negating opposite Volt Switches, and Competitive works as a punishment for lowering stats, be it by Intimidate or moves with this second effect.

Flavor: basically an Anhanguerid (those pterosaurs with crests at the end of their beaks)

  • +Dark Pulse, Lash Out, Nasty Plot, Switcheroo, Poison Fang, Ice Fang, Recover
  • -All Rock-type moves (Excluding Stealth Rock), Earth Power, Shell Smash, Blizzard, Aurora Beam, Scald
Description: Omastar goes through some significant changes here, going from being primarily a special attacker to now being able to wield both its attacking stats effectively- for physical it has a good stat in combination with the equivalent of a slightly-weaker, but Strong Jaw boosted Water-type Fire Lash, along with it also having a Strong Jaw-boosted, STAB Crunch, and access to coverage in Ice Fang and Toxic spread with Poison Fang, and for special an average stat but with access to Nasty Plot or the ability to have a non-knockable Choice Specs, but if with the former it can also have a non-knockable Life Orb with access to recovery, and it overall has good STABs. Of course, while it's now arguably ever so slightly more offense-orientated, it can still play defensively, very much so with, again, access to consistent recovery, in, well, Recover, hazards in Spikes and Toxic Spikes, and it can again play status spreader with the aforementioned Toxic Spikes and Poison Fang, and Sticky Hold can be quite useful, as it allows Omastar to keep its item from Knock Off while also having a resistance to said move.

They were very slow and bunkered on land, but their powerful and speedy claws made quick work if foes and land alike. The metal armor protected it from foes like Kabutops and protected its innards from the pressures of the deep. Unfortunately the warming temperatures and drying of large water sources made their own metallic armor praised for keeping them safe the means of which they died out as they essentially got cooked alive.

Umm... yeah. Not exactly sure how you thought this would be balanced, but 145 Attack and 130 Speed with Tough Claws is absolutely ridiculous. Aerodactyl last gen was a strong threat even with 95 Attack, so preferably lower Attack to be around that level, or remove Tough Claws and lower Attack to somewhere around 120.

Not a veto for balance reasons, but your move additions don't make sense. I assume the part about Water moves was supposed to go under removals? But even then, Kabutops doesn't learn Aqua Cutter, so you'd need to add that if you wanted it. Additionally, please make sure to clarify exactly which moves are being removed instead of just listing types, as it makes things much easier for our coders. Thanks!

While it is certainly true that this mon has a quite poor offensive typing and is very prone to chip (particularly hazards and recoil), we feel the ability pushes this over the edge. A good solution would be to lower the amount the damage is increased to something like 1.5x.
:sv/Omastar:
Name: Omastar (Shell Form)
Tying: Dark / Ghost
Abilities: Shell Breaker (Switches forms when using Shell Smash)
Stats: 90 / 35 / 140 / 70 / 140 / 20 (Total: 495)

Name: Omastar (Smashed Shell Form)
Typing: Dark / Poison
Ability: Shell Breaker (Switches forms when using Shell Smash)
Stats: 90 / 105 / 40 / 120 / 40 / 100 (Total: 495)

New Moves: [NEW] Toxic Charge (130BP / 100% Acc, 2 Turn Attack (first turn charges +1 Special Attack, second turn fires) Poison, Special… Dark Pulse, Sludge Bomb, Venoshock, Sucker Punch, Poison Jab, Gunk Shot, Shadow Sneak, Toxic, Toxic Spikes, Acid Armor
Removed Moves: N/A

Role: Omastar is my attempt at a gimmick mon, prior to using the move shell smash it is very slow and weak, with high defense, and after it does a complete 180, going from a weak bulky mon to a fast, frail, mixed attacker with +2 to its big 3 stats and -1 to its lesser two making it a very daunting sweeper that can almost always get the shell smash off due to its great typing and bulk in its “Shell Form”
Flavor: Omastar live inside their shells, when they finally grow to big for them they get angry and fly into a great rage, thrashing everything in sight including its own shell, these Pokémon are not to be messed with in this state.
Council feels this mon is a bit overtuned for its own good. It's an incredibly effective smasher with its amazing bulk and typing, while also being extremely dangerous once it has set up. This concept likely needs to be reworked from the ground up, but if you want to salvage the form change you'll need to cut both bulk on the Shell Form and offenses on Smashed Shell form.

You all will have 24 hours to fix your submissions (or less if everyone finishes sooner), and then voting will begin!

Umm...
I have just done the former, redistributing the remaining 50 points among the defenses and Special Attack. I'm keeping Tough Claws specifically as a reference to Mega Aerodactyl but if it really is that good, I guess nerfing its Attack stat to what you suggested would keep it from being too overpowered (though in hindsight, 145 Attack is likely overkill enough on its own!).

Alright, all the vetos have been corrected, so voting can begin! The voting rules will be the same as last gen:
  • Each Pokémon will be voted for separately.
  • There is no limit on the amount of submissions you can vote for. First Place will count for 3 points, Second Place for 2, and all others will count for 1 point.
  • Self Votes may not be First Place, and have a limit of 6 points total.
Kabutops: First Place, Second Place, Third Place
Omastar: First Place, Second Place
Aerodactyl: First Place, Second Place, Third Place, Fourth Place, Fifth Place
Armaldo: First Place, Second Place, Third Place
Cradily: First Place

You’ll have 48 hours to vote, so get those votes in!
