NU_LureThatThreat.png

Lures have been around in Pokemon for a long time, they act as a way for your team to beat an otherwise unbeatable wall or stop to your sweeper. Lures are Pokemon that use sets to draw in their usual counters and expose of them with surprise. This can also mean either KO'ing, weakening, or crippling them for a teammate to take them on more effectively. Lures are a tad uncommon, and some people just use flat out bad lures. A lure may be good for one thing, but sacrificing a key component is not a good lure. For example, running Magic Coat on Comfey seems good in theory, bouncing back Taunts, Thunder Waves, and Will-O-Wisps; however, this means Comfey can only use it once, effectively making it somewhat useless and easy to predict around. You end up being prone to being outplayed, making it more detrimental than beneficial. Lures should be able to consistently be as / more effective than their normal counterparts. So this is how the project will work:

1. Similar to other projects, each week I will nominate a common wall or threat that teams typically struggle with. Over the following week, the NU community will nominate the lures they've been using to handle said wall or threat. Please provide calcs and evidence for your lures. This is different to the 'counter that threat' thread, where checks and counters are always more obvious than lures.

2. At the end of the each week, all results will be archived, so that eventually we'll have a bank of lures in the tier with descriptions and sets to match.

3. There's no voting so everyone is a winner! It's as simple as that!

Things to consider when nominating a lure:

1. Does this Pokemon have to sacrifice anything important? If you're losing a key part of a set just for an uncommon threat that isn't even lured in that well, it's not worth it and this is a bad lure.

2. Does this Pokemon consistently perform its role? If you're sacrificing too much and not benefiting on a regular basis, it's not a good lure.

3. Does this Pokemon gain anything important when using this moveset? The contrary to point number one, does this pokemon or the team benefit from the lure.

4. Could this method be better aided through teammates? Does your lure need team support to carry out it's role effectively.

Example of a bad lure:

:Tauros:
Tauros @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Body Slam
- Close Combat
- Throat Chop
- Thunderbolt

haha thunderbolt hits Vaporeon it's so gOoD!!

Example of a good lure:

:Sylveon:
Sylveon @ Choice Specs
Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest/Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hyper Voice
- Mystical Fire
- Psyshock
- Hyper Beam / Quick Attack / Shadow Ball

Choice Specs Sylveon is an effective lure in the current metagame being able to pressure poison and steel types such as Bronzong, Salazzle, Vileplume, and Copperajah who would normally switch in on cleric sets without any worry. It also benefits from being able to 2HKO neutral walls thanks to its excellent special attack and pixilate boosted hyper voices.

Current Lure of the week:

Blastoise loves to set up on fire types, one of which is Arcanine. Arcanine is usually seen with a defensive set utilizing teleport and status for damage. Making it really susceptible to Blastoise, especially sub variants. Using an offensive Arcanine set means you can get the jump on blastoise in a 1v1 scenario. With priority E-speed helping to revenge kill a weakened Blastoise. It benifits from the offensive style as it's able to pressure Vaporeon on the switch, as well as having decent priority to revenge weakened threats.

Works the same as the Rotom-Mow above but uses Virizion instead. With Stone Edge for Talonflame, this thing can potentially reverse sweep your opponent but gets rid of Blastoise for sure.

Although not commonly seen, Jynx can work to lure the turtle. It can live a +2 Dark Pulse and put it to sleep in return. It also is able to outspeed it if it hasn’t set up, and can 2HKO it with Energy Ball. It can also possibly OHKO it if it hasn’t been taken out after a boost. It can possibly turn a possible Blastoise sweep into a reverse sweep by Jynx, since it is able to OHKO or 2HKO Pokemon weak to its coverage, such as Rotom Mow, Talonflame and Dragalge.

+2 252+ SpA Blastoise Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Colbur Berry Jynx: 150-177 (44.9 - 52.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Heliolisk has become a common presence in our metagame, as an offensive water resist and pivot, bringing in strong threats on almost unimpeded volt switches. This is because Heliolisk has a strong secondary STAB move in Hyper Voice able to hit all ground types in the tier for neutral damage, or can use Surf to hit them super effectively. The reason this set is a lure, is that usually Heliolisk run Heavy Duty Boots of Specs, whereas Scarf is seen a little bit, it is usually uncommon. Scarf is able to outspeed Shell Smash Blastoise at +2, and hit it for a lot of damage with Volt Switch/Thunderbolt. Another option to guarantee the OHKO on stoise is to try your luck with Thunder, which trades accuracy for damage, meaning you don’t have to play around with the opponent shell smashing again in your face.

252 SpA Heliolisk Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Blastoise: 252-296 (84.2 - 98.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Heliolisk Thunder vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Blastoise: 306-362 (102.3 - 121%) -- guaranteed OHKO

My bad if I posted this to late, but this is Imprison Jellicent. Imprison is for shutting down Blastoise since Blastoise runs the 3 moves Jellicent has. Once you use Imprison, Blastoise gets completely shut down, as it can't attack after it uses Shell Smash.

Talonflame has a habbit of luring in Diancie and this set takes advantage of that by running Steel Wing, hitting Diancie with a 4 times effective move. Well, tbf the OHKO with +2 Steel Wing isn't guaranteed even after Stealth Rock but getting that little chip damage isn't that hard. Also acts as a fun cleaner lategame.

Offensive Druddigon saw a decent amount of use in the earlier weeks of NUPL and has remained semi relevant as a wallbreaker that can take advantage of its really good coverage to threaten a wide variety of Pokemon such as Sylveon, Levitate Bronzong, and Vaporeon. To be a better Diancie lure, I'm opting here for Iron Head instead of Gunk Shot so that Druddigon can really easy KO it on the spot.

Hey, this set is really interesting with a mon like Xatu, who doesn't like Diancie and which prevents Sr to be on the field, that's huge with no hdb Scyther. It's also a great pivot for mons like Goodra specs, Exploud who want to weaken copper/zong and to come on arcanin/talon/mud or again 3 attacks Salazle which likes to come on Arcanine/Zong/Copper.
All these mons hate Diancie, so i think this Scyther can be a good lure in the current metagame. Itemless Scyther can be also works here, to be a good check at Dueye/Dhelmise or again Golurk. Hdb also, if you can't play Xatu in your team

Four attacks Absol is something I've been using to great success lately. Many people don't expect it to carry iron tail, so they often let their diancie switch in or stay in on Absol. Black glasses allows it to mimic banded power, making it easier to lure as they'd think you're locked in.

EDIT: hears a replay showing off the lure potential

So someone already posted an Iron Tail goodra set, but this one is much more viable in terms of real games,as you aren’t going to safely get curse sweeps as likely as you are to just hit things with your monstrous spA stat. Went over this set in the VR post I made recently, but basically you bluff standard 4 Special move Goodra, and have the coverage to hit everything so long as your moves connect. Iron Tail with no Attack investment still 2HKOS standard Diancie, and because it can’t kill you with any move in one, you essentially force it out. Ebelt helps a bit with overall damage output, making your Iron Tail lure work better.

In most instances Uxie is run w/ a lead set consisting of various utility moves, whether it be rocks, screens, t-wave, yawn and STAB/u-turn. I can see why a Guzzlord would switch in for a potentially cheeky KO and Beast Boost.

Fairy has never been an amazing coverage option due to our premier dark type being Drapion but in this instance it works great! Despite being low BP it still hits for x4 damage and is able to chunk Guzz for massive damage even without a boost.

Additionally Uxie isn’t taking much damage in return

For damage calcs, you’re looking at +0 hitting Guzz for 27-32%, +1 40-48% and +2 54.5-64.

In return Guzz’s best option to hit you is with knock, clocking in at a consistent 24-29% due to you being itemless from the start.

Additional information about the set unrelated to Guzz can be found here. An excellent write up and credit for the original concept (at least for Gen8.)

Guzzlord usually can switch in on copper without taking much damage but play rough allows copper to destroy guzzlord. Also cant be hit by toxic or OHKO by guzzlord.
