Welcome to the NU Lower Tier Niche Archive, a project iplaytennislol and I have been working on together. The scope of this thread is to provide a list of all the Pokemon in tiers below NU (excluding most LC) and describe whether they have a niche that warrants any potentially viable sets in NU over any Pokemon that might "outclass" them.

You are welcome to fight for or against any Pokemon on the list (potentially adding Pokemon to the list as well), but don't use "outclassed" as a justification for removing anything unless there is a Pokemon out there that will do everything that Pokemon can do better. This is NOT the Viability Rankings and we should be exploring any relevant avenue for these Pokemon.
Example: Prinplup has comparable bulk to Wartortle, but with Defog and Stealth Rock. However, Wartortle has Foresight and Rapid Spin so it has a notable set over Prinplup.
Butterfree has two potential abilities with Compound Eyes and Tinted Lens. Vivillon is faster than Butterfree and has Compound Eyes with Hurricane. Butterfree has nothing better than Vivillon here and is outclassed. Mothim is more powerful than Butterfree and has the same coverage with Tinted Lens so Butterfree is outclassed here as well.

It's important to note that a Pokemon with a yes is not necessarily good. In fact, some of them are really bad (Armaldo, Magcargo, Seviper), but as long as they have some kind of niche to make them worth putting onto an NU team, they'll be listed with a yes. Don't expect to be able to slap all of these Pokemon onto a team and expect them to work like you can with Kangaskhan or Sneasel.
If you're looking for a cool Pokemon that does something specific, I recommend using Ctrl + F

Arbok
, 2 cool abilities in intimidate and shed skin. Access to decent boosting move in coil. Priority in sucker punch. Weak to common psychic types. Access to aqua tail/eq to hit its common switch ins.
Ariados
, One of the few sticky web users in the tier. Access to priority in sucker punch. outclassed my leavanny. Access to megahorn and toxic spikes seperates it from leavanny.
Armaldo
, Bad typing, not a very reliable spinner. Outclassed by kabutops, sandslash. Priority in aqua jet. Spinner that beats Malamar and checks Normal-types.Fits well on Rain teams that struggle to reliably beat Grass-type Pokemon.
Articuno
, 4x rocks weakness and annoying typing. Great offensively but cant take many hits. Access to freeze dry allows it to hit waters that resist its dual stab like Lanturn.
Aurorus
, Huge threat. Access to hyper voice + refrigerate or blizzard + snow warning. Access to psychic which hits yama, access to Freeze-Dry to hit Water-types, access to earth power which hits fire and steel types. Can also run a nasty physical attacking set with moves such as Return, Stone Edge, and Earthquake. Also has access to Stealth Rock and Encore for a lead set. Scarf set beats weather based sweepers such as Ludicolo and Victreebel thanks to Snow Warning. Can also utilize a Rock Polish set to some degree of effectiveness.
Avalugg
, Super defensive wall + rapid spinner. Weak to stealth rock. Can switch in and beat both tauros and archeops (unless stone edge, i believe its 2 hit ko'd after rocks). leaning towards yes because Kushalos crushed me with it.
Barbaracle
, Fantastic sweeper with access to shell smash. Tough claws allows it to completely run through teams. Access to cross chop for Ferroseed and earthquake for lanturn. Return is a great middle ground that gets the tough claws boost. Return/Razor Shell/eq or cross chop beats the entire tier. Stone edge isnt necessary. Grass Knot allows it to get by bulky water types like Quagsire.
Basculin
, Access to adaptability. Access to priority in aqua jet. Super frail but access to cool moves like superpower (hits bulky steels/normals), zen headbut(hits poison types) and crunch to hit psychics, Ice Beam for Grass-types.
Bastiodon
, Access to soundproof which beats chatot effectively. Shuts down flying types. Access to stealth rock and roar. Incredibly slow and reliant on Metal Burst for damage. Typically Probopass fills this role better, unless Roar is absolutely necessary
Beartic
, Incredibly lethal under rain because of access to swift swim. Priority in aqua jet. Coverage in superpower to hit steels and normals. Literally OHKO's or 2HKO's the entire tier with a Swords Dance up. Generally bad outside of rain.
Beheeyem,
Access to analytic + decent coverage. Terrible speed but ok because of analytic + natural bulk. Effective Trick Room setter, can run a calm mind set; however, this is typically outclassed by other Psychic-types.
Bellossom
, One of the few Physical attacking Chlorophyll Sweepers (although mostly outclassed by Sawsbuck), access to cool moves like Swords Dance, Leaf Blade, Drain Punch, and Facade, decent bulk gives it a surprising number of set up opportunities. Decent base Spdef. Stat paired with moves such as Synthesis, Sleep Powder and Stun Spore mean that Belossom can run a decent specially defensive set.
Bibarel
, Access to simple and unaware. Terrible typing, weak to grass, fighting, electric. Access to stealth rock, super fang and thunder wave. Beats top mons in SD samurott, Fletchinder and CM psychics.
Carbink
, Cool typing that allows it to take on normal and fire types. Access to stealth rock, dual screens, and explosion to function as a suicide lead. Can work as a trick room setter. Sky high defense stats, calm mind resttalk moonblast = ez wins

Chatot
, Access to chatter which always confuses. Access to boomburst. Terrible defenses. Access to nasty plot, encore, heat wave, and u-turn.
Clefairy
, defensive fairy with good support options like stealth rock, encore, t-wave, knock off, as well as reliable recovery, magic guard, and a boosting move in CM.

Croconaw
, Access to dragon dance, swords dance and priority in aqua jet. Access to ice punch for coverage. Can run evio to maximize bulk and set up opportunites.
Dedenne
, Access to nuzzle. Outclassed offensively by other electric types like Rotom, Raichu etc. with a great speed tier and the ability cheek pouch, dedenne can effectively stall out many Pokemon in the tier with a combination of Substitute+Toxic and a Sitrus Berry.
Delibird,
Access to spikes + destiny bond + rapid spin + defog. Terrible typing but acts as a good suicide lead. Hustle + Choice Band leads to unreliable albeit insane damage output.
Dewgong
, Access to thick fat. Poor typing, weak to grass, fighting, electric. Access to disable, encore, icy wind, perish song. Solid ice resist.
Ditto,
Best revenge killer in the tier with Imposter. Can really only run choice scarf.
Dodrio
, Powerful normal and flying attacker. Good speed and isnt too frail. Access to knock off, baton pass, and more immediate power allows it to not be entirely outclassed by Swellow.
Dragonair
, Access to extreme speed + dragon dance. Eviolite gives it decent oppritunities to set up. Gets aqua tail to hit bulky ground and rock types. Marvel Scale has incredible synergy with resttalk, making dragonair a great booster with Dragon Dance and Dragon tail. Good special move pool with Draco Meteor, Fire Blast, and Surf.

Dunsparce
, Access to serene grace body slam, rock slide. Access to coil and roost which no other Normal-type gets.
Duosion
, Outclassed by mostly Mesprit, Uxie, Musharna. However, magic guard and sky high Special Attack makes it on the edge of viable. If hazard control is really difficult to fit on your team Duosion is a really solid option as it doesn't care about rocks, spikes, tspikes, and other residual damage.

, Incredibly bulky and reliable spin blocker. Access to will-o-wisp, rest talk, destiny bond, priority in shadow sneak. Evio makes it a reliable spin blocker.
Dusknoir
, Access to shadow sneak, power up punch, earthquake, pursuit, and will-o-wisp. Solid defenses.
Dustox
, Access to shield dust and unique secondary Poison-typing, which grants it an immunity to Toxic, retains the x4 fighting resistance, but having only a x2 weakness to Rocks, separates it from other quiver dancers. Iron Defense synergizes with the Quiver Dance set for all around bulk.

Electabuzz
, Fast and bulky with Eviolite. Immunity to sleep with Vital Spirit. Focus Blast is good coverage.

, Access to stealth rock, neat typing which allows it decent bulk w/ eviolite. Rough Skin is also a great ability for residual damge on Physical Attackers. Access to fire blast to smack Ferroseed.
Girafarig,
Access to nasty plot + baton pass. Cool typing allows it to be the only psychic type in the tier immune to ghost. sap sipper makes a good Grass-type immunuity.
Gogoat,
Incredibly cool pokemon because of its natural bulk, ability in sap sipper, movepool containing rock slide, earthquake, bulk up. Horn Leech and Milk Drink replenish HP consistently.
Golduck, Only thing that stands out is its ability cloud nine. I guess it could function to beat weather because life orb ice beam beats sun and hp grass can handle rain. Calm Mind is a good set up option.
Golem
, Access to stealth rock + explosion. Access to sturdy allows it to be a good suicide lead with custap berry. Strong offensive presence with Earthquake + Stone Edge STAB, sucker punch, and Explosion.

Heatmor
, Access to flash fire, priority in sucker punch, giga drain. Poor speed however it has a niche over Ninetales because of giga drain (allows recovery), knock off, and sucker punch.

Leafeon
, Great speed, attack and defense. Solid in and out of sun. Limited coverage makes it not higher than it is in viability rankings. Knock off and natural gift psychic, fire are the only cool things it gets. X-scissor i guess is decent if you are paranoid about Malamar.
Leavanny
, Sticky web user with access to magic coat. This allows it to block oppposing hazards and taunt. Knock off and SD allow it to get past Xatu.

Lumineon
, Access to defog without having a rocks weakness. Storm drain is neat as it can freely switch in to scalds and other water moves. Tailwind can support teammates vs SmashPass or Weather teams. U-turn allows it momentum.

, Flying, grass, fire and normal resist with access to recovery. Access to stealth rock. Hard walls every varient of Fletchinder barring natural gift ground.
Magmar
, Generally outclassed my Magmortar in every way. Only argument for it is eviolite belly drum because of the increased bulk.faster than magmortar.

No to gogoat
Yes to venipede
I've never been entirely sold on Venipede. If you can provide me with a list of relevant things it outspeeds with a +1 Speed boost that warrants it over Whirlipede's superior bulk, I'll put it on
Goat's good, Realistic Waters swept me with it and I don't lose to bad things !!!
edit: also separated the list in Yes's and No's to make reading easier :)

I think it would be better to remove the list of unviables and just leave the viables there. If someone doesnt see a mon they think is viable on the list they can nom it. Also remove the yes next to all the viables anyways because if they are in the viable list we dont need a yes next to all of them @_@

hey Disjunction i'll reformat the list a little so its more readable and has imgs sometime this weekend, unless you're already working on it that is

Literally was about to comment on how ben gay did something like this...

+1 to Can-Eh-Dian's ideas about the list

Nominating Spritzee to be somewhere on there as a pure Fairy-type cleric, also has Aroma Veil so it isn't 1v1'd by Taunt Pyroar, etc.

yeah agree with Spritzee, i remember in conquest Omfuga had success with it. so naturally i stole it and had success too :toast:

Spritzee @ Eviolite
Ability: Aroma Veil
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Moonblast
- Wish
- Protect
- Aromatherapy

This is the set I used. It's pretty cool and its bulk is surprising; it allows Spritzee to wall things like Pinsir and Gallade to an extent. Unfortunately, a ton of the top-tier threats that it can wall run knock off. The calcs are still p impressive though.

252+ Atk Silk Scarf Kangaskhan Double-Edge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Spritzee: 136-162 (37.8 - 45.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Gallade Zen Headbutt vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Spritzee: 138-163 (38.4 - 45.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Gallade Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Spritzee: 102-121 (28.4 - 33.7%) -- 0.5% chance to 3HKO

252 Atk Choice Band Sneasel Icicle Crash vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Spritzee: 109-130 (30.3 - 36.2%) -- 52.7% chance to 3HKO

252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Tauros Rock Climb vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Spritzee: 136-161 (37.8 - 44.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252+ Atk Life Orb Kabutops Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Spritzee: 142-168 (39.5 - 46.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Can-Eh-Dian I'll remove the yes's and no's cause they're pretty irrelevant now, I agree. I don't see the harm in keeping the non-viables, though. At the very least, they provide an explanation on why not to use them. Plus, they're out of the way so I like them there.

Kiyo I've had people complain to me about this looking like a block of text so I was muddling around with some reformatting ideas. Putting in sprites was another project I wanted to do. idk if that's all you wanted to do, but if you have any other ideas I'm all ears.

lmao I remember when Aleccat was in the NU room and got pissed because no one believed him when he was talking about how good Spritzee was. Adding to the list.

EDIT: made changes cept for sprites cause lol that'll take like 2 hours or something

Yeah I'll do sprites and stuff tonight, dw bout it. I can get someone to edit it in if ur not on

Maractus can do multiple things that Cacturne can't. All of its defenses are better, and it has access to Storm Drain so it can switch into Water types and power-up its Giga Drains. It also has Cotton Guard to boost its defenses. Also, while still outclassed, Kirlia is a good Trick Room suicide lead.

That little bit of extra bulk against Cacturne really means nothing seen as how it's still pretty frail with pure grass typing. Water absorb is much more useful than Storm drain as you recover some HP while still being immune to water moves, Cacturne may miss out on the special attack boost but it already has that 115 SpA with dual stabs and not a lot enjoys switching in to it.
And it gets cotton guard? That really isn't anything :s it shouldn't even be used, it's poor speed, defences and typing means it's not going to be beneficial in the long run.

As towards Kirlia, yes it's largely outclassed as a suicide lead by Carbink who has a lot more to offer such as being able to get up hazards and getting Sturdy in conjuration with Custap Berry and explosion. I'm not sure what Kirlia has over anything that would make it a usable trick room user.

I always run Kirlia with Focus Sash, Trick Room, and Destiny Bond, so if you're lucky you can take out a major threat on the opponent's team. It also gets support options like Trick, Will-o'-Wisp, Thunder Wave, Taunt, Screens, Icy Wind, and Confuse Ray. While Kirlia is outclassed by a multitude of pokemon that carry these moves, it's rarity and unpredictability can work in its favor.

Murkrow should be listed here :]
Prankster is a cool ability allowing it to run some cool sets like LO+Bravebird with t-wave for support, or bulky eviolite feather dance, or even perish song mean look ;o. Clearly not outclassed by much since nothing can really do any of those above mentioned sets so it's a cool niche mon.

Updated a couple things. We have sprites now :)

Also added Murkrow, Shelmet, and Yanma

Murkrow Great typing defensively and offensively. Prankster and a slew of support moves, such as Roost, Feather Dance, Mean Look, Perish Song, Taunt, Haze, Tailwind, and Whirlwind are great assets. Offensively it gets Brave Bird, Sucker Punch, Calm Mind, and Dark Pulse.

Shelmet, averagely bulky with Eviolite with access to Spikes, Recover, and Baton Pass.
(Sir Kay 9 likes it and told me that Sweet Jesus likes it, I got backing from hollywood so I also like it)

Yanma, Decent cleaner with its base 95 speed, decent Special Attack, neat offensive STABs, Giga Drain, and, most importantly, Speed Boost.

Also made the relevant mention of Belch in Dewgong's bit as it helps beat Ferroseed.

Lol I wouldn't say I "like" shelmet, I just tested him out because I wanted a defensive mono bug and it was sort of ok.
You should probably add infestation to your set description though, it's the gimmick that if you manage to get in on something that barely damages shelmet will let you lay your spikes for free and recover any damage you get in while still putting in some residual damage. (To anyone interested, infestation is not baton passed).

I'd slightly extend the dustox description too, shield dust is not the "only thing" that makes it different from other QD users. Dustox's typing is actually a good defensive typing (unique among QD users) and with roost and a kee berry the thing can actually become hard to break down and impossible to stop.

Old but gold (starting turn 20)
