[OVERVIEW]

  • amazing ability in contrary gives malamar the unique ability to boost its attack and defense while using an attacking move (superpower)
  • great coverage in fighting/dark with no relevant resists lets it be a thorn in the side of offensive and defensive teams alike
  • while its raw hp and spdef stats may not show it, when invested malamar can take some strong special attacks surprisingly well, such as swellows boomburst or life orb floatzels hydro pump, while its physical defense can be boosted by superpower
  • while its defensive typing leaves it with few weaknesses, it provides absolutely no resistances and only an immunity to psychic, hindering its defensive utility. this is further exemplified by malamars lack of physical bulk
  • exploitable weakness to bug leaves malamar managable by just slapping a bug move on something (ie signal beam mesprit or megahorn samurott)

[SET]
name: blast was here man balamar
move 1: Knock Off
move 2: Superpower
move 3: Rest
move 4: Sleep Talk
item: Leftovers
ability: Contrary
nature: Careful
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Superpower is a pretty powerful attack that boosts malamars attack and defense when used, while also letting it hit dark-, steel-, and normal-types super effectively
  • knock off is a decently strong STAB attack
  • rest provides malamar with a way to rid itself of status as well as give it a way to recover off damage
  • sleep talk gives malamar a 2/3 chance to not be total fodder when its asleep from rest

Set Details
========

  • max hp and max spdef let malamar most efficiently take special hits
  • leftovers gives malamar passive means of recovery
  • contrary is a unique ability which turns stat drops into raises and vice versa, meaning superpower hits the foe for a 120 base power move that boosts both its attack and defense
Usage Tips
========

  • malamars best used a mid-late game cleaner once its checks and counters are weakened
  • use superpower on something it hits super effectively or on a weaker special attacker like vileplume or rotom fan to potentially start a sweep with the boosts superpower gives you.
  • use knock off early game to whittle down checks and counters early on
  • be wary of bug type coverage moves such as signal beam on mesprit or megahorn on samurott
  • rest to keep healthy and remove status
Team Options
========

  • malamar tends to fit best on balanced teams in need of a wincon
  • hazard support from the likes of rhydon, steelix or garbodor help malamar a great deal considering most of its checks are susceptable to hazards (like how scyther has a stealth rock weakness or how quagsire is really susceptable to tspikes)
  • strong wallbreakers like magmortar pave the way for a late-game sweep from malamar
  • steel types like steelix or mawile handle musharna and audino
  • scyther checks, like rotom or rhydon

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • offensive (strong strong strong mention)
  • support moves like topsy turvy/destiny bond/taunt
  • rock slide hits scyther
  • scarf

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bug-type coverage moves**: signal beam from mesprit, xatu, or musharna, megahorn from rhydon and samu

**Bug-types**: Scyther and Pinsir can easily take anything malamar wants to go for and either use if as set up fodder

**Curse Quagsire**: ignores stat boosts and uses malamar as set up fodder

**Mega Audino** shrugs off anything malamar wants to do and can set up cms on it

Change to "lack of raw physical bulk" or remove the comment altogether imo)
  • exploitable weakness to bug leaves malamar managable by just slapping a bug move on something (ie signal beam mesprit or megahorn samurott)

  • use superpower on something it hits super effectively or on a weakened foe to eliminate it and potentially start a sweep with the boosts superpower gives you

add a tip about Malamar boosting up on weaker special attackers, such as Vileplume, Rotom-S, and Lanturn. These are the main mons Malamar takes advantage of, not stuff it hits for super-effective damage with Superpower.

add something about keeping Malamar healthy with Rest, too, because it needs to stay close to full to start snowballing boosts.

heal bell support mention in here would be cool, too, to remove the self-induced Sleep.

Other Options
=============
  • offensive (strong strong strong mention) (assuming you're talking about the sub set)
  • support moves like topsy turvy/destiny bond/taunt
  • rock slide hits scyther
idk how you're going to talk about the support moves, but DBond/Topsy Turvy/Trick can all be used on a Choice Scarf set which makes for a decent late-game cleaner if the opp doesn't have any Ghost-types left.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bug-type coverage moves**: signal beam from mesprit, xatu, or musharna, megahorn from rhydon and samu

**Scyther**: can easily take anything malamar wants to go for and either use if as set up fodder

**Quagsire**: ignores stat boosts and uses malamar as set up fodder

bulky Ghost-types like Mismagius and Gourgeist also check it because it can't set up on them. Geist whittles and Magius beats it with Taunt + Burn.
1/3 with that. say hi to kenna for me and give her my phone number cause she's still cute

Rename the set to "Contrary Attacker"; just think it gives a better meaning to what the set is all about rather than RestTalk.

Team options

Add in some defensive Grass-types such as Vileplume or Roselia for teammates since they're able to get past Quagsire. Also bring up that Roselia provides (Toxic)Spikes support as well.

Checks and Counters

Change the section for Scyther to "Bug-types" and add in Pinsir there. Also mention that Scyther doesn't exactly like getting it's Eviolite knocked off on the switch. Specify that Quagsire only 100% beats Malamar if it's using Curse, otherwise, Malamar can stall it out by not clicking Sleep Talk. Audino should get a section, likely at the bottom, given that it 3HKOes with Dazzling Gleam, resists Knock Off, and is neutral to Superpower. Just make sure to state that it becomes shaky when Malamar already has boosts under its belt.
