Little Cup Team Building Competition!
Taken over from Superpowerdude / approved by macle

The goal of this project is to hone your team building skills, and understand how experienced Little Cup players go about building their teams around a particular core. For this project there will also be an emphasis on creativity, to avoid boring standard teams being posted every round, teams can only use two of the following pokemon: Pawniard, Fletchling, Chinchou and Mienfoo. With this condition in place, viable teams can still be made but it makes things a little more fun and prevents the same shit from being used round after round. So in summary the goals around this project are:
  • To hone team building skills around a particular core
  • Being creative in team building, yet still make viable teams
  • Learn from others on how they team build around a particular core
  • Discover new and effective cores in the metagame
The rules of this thread are very simple, I post a core or a single Pokemon and users have a week to teambuild around that core/Pokemon; when the week is up people post what they think was the best team for that week. I would prefer people to explain in one or two sentences why they chose the team that they voted for and please please please don't bandwagon just because a user has mods, doesn't mean they are going to post the best team lol. Voting stage also lasts a week with the winners team being placed in the Team Building Hall Of Fame. Rules for posting;
  • Make the post presentable, use XY sprites (or PokeSho if real) and have the team in exportable format so it can be used
  • Make sure you have a paragraph describing how your team functions and how it supports the core
  • Don't insult users if their teams aren't up to standard, feel free to question why people are running certain things, in fact, I highly encourage discussion but don't be rude about it
  • Use hide tags when posting your team
  • You can only have two of the following Pokemon on your team: Fletchling, Mienfoo, Pawniard, Chinchou

Okay with that said the first core is....

Croagunk and Vullaby can both be utilized in a variety of different ways, from offensive sweeping sets to defensive utility sets. Croagunk's Ground- and Psychic-type weaknesses are covered by Vullaby and Vullaby's Rock- and Fairy-type weaknesses are covered by Croagunk. Will we see some unique defensive cores involving these Pokemon? Will we see, possibly, a dual-Nasty Plot core?

To kick this off, I am going to post my trusty rain team. While it wasn't build with Gunk + Vulla inmind, I did however start to build and required there support. My primary rain sweeper is of course Splash Plate Oma with Shell Smash which basically ruins lives. I decided to add Chespin alongside Oma to better deal with threats such as Gastly, Bellsprout, Foongus, Ferroseed, etc. Mienfoo + Chinchou are the best rain setters in the tier and are able to set rain more than enough times while providing support outside of simply rain dancing. Then came my decision to add the last two pokemon. I wanted another rain sweeper and 2 more fighting checks as well as hazard control. Originally I was looking at the mighty Wingull and had Larvesta additionally to create a volt turn core. However I found larvesta clashed with the rain too much, thus I switched it out for Vullaby only to find myself wishing for another Rain sweeper and something to deal with pawn if it nabs a defiant boost. Thus I doned Gunk, who admittedly doesn't especially deal with Pawn, had decent synergy with the pivotal members.

Maybe add Chinchou to the list of "only two per team"? That's not about fiend hound's team (it works with only chou + foo) but it seems like it'll be really easy just to run Volt-Turn (Chou Fletch Foo Vullaby) with Crogunk as the second fighting type, and that's not super creative

Yeah this makes sense, tbh I just copy and pasted Superpowerdude's OP and removed Misdreavus, so thanks for the heads up.

Well I will give my trying dont using none of the mons, basically this is a sand stall , First of Gunk and Vulla have a common weakness for Archen and Drilbur So I decided to use hippo that can check both and also help Gunk vs Pawn, Hippo and ferroseed forms a really good defensive core that I can use it to twave setup sweepers and them commes licki that can use cleric support on every pokemon on this team and that carries a cool synergy with the core, and last Archen that can check Fletch without the risk of getting trapped by Digglet+ fletch, that team is really effective I use it on ladder a lot

Well My friend I will always be mad about the power of a rain synthesis LOL

So this is a team I already had and realized I just needed to switch out Chinchou for Magnemite.

Alright, here are the basics. Fletchling here is the late-game sweeper here with his amazing STAB 110 BP priority move. Diglett is here to complete the FletchDig duo and to trap and get rid of pesky steel, rock, and electric types. Pawniard provides much-loved Knock Off support and acts as a back-up sweeper if he needs to. Croagunk takes care of the fighting, grass, and water attacks that haunt the previous three pokemon. Vullaby finishes the Croagunk-Vullaby core and gives the team much-needed immunities to ground and psychic. Magnemite is a birdspam check and annoyer, he also forms a (weak) Voltturn core with Vullaby.

Knock Off Spam+LO Gastly Balance
ok so this is my team i built for the competition, and if you ask me it looks pretty badass in team preview xD. but anyways, it is focused around using my defensive core of vullaby/croagunk/tirtouga to spam knock offs while setting up stealth rock and such, so that way gastly can break through teams and hopefully sweep, or pawniard can clean up for it. Pumpkaboo is there to sponge chinchou and abra and stuff and annoy the other team with leech seed and will-o-wisp. Some notable cores i have going on in this is slow u-turn+gastly (it can get gastly in very safely so that way it can break down the walls), croagunk+vullaby+tirtouga (basic defensive core that can spam knock off for gastly and pawniard, and Tirtouga+Pawniard+gastly as a way to keep up my stealth rocks while maintaining constant offensive pressure to break down my opponent's team. It is a pretty simple team for new players to pick up and start using, and it does it's job well.

This is a simple HO based on standard Gunk and Scarf Vullaby. Dwebble as setter because he can usually set SR and 1 layer of spikes. Stunky for dealing with Abra, that is a huge problem for the team. Gastly as spin blocker and Staryu as spinner.

Built a team for this that's the best team because of one reason:

BASED RHYGOD
here's how it's supposed to work:
- gunk and snubull pair to fuck with Fighting-types + other things with a combination of bulk, para, knock off, and strong moves
- Vullaby provides defog, forms the core of the week with gunk, uses knock off, sweeps up weakened fighting types, and is a don against grass types
- Ferro stops chou / other water types along with weak-ass random physical attackers (the one dude above like 1450 who uses aipom take notice b/c ferro is coming for you)
- Abra? No fuck you lickitung also wishes, knock offs, cunnilingus
- and rhyhorn who stops fletch cold and then they're like "imma switch to a water" and the horny bastard's like "imma ruin their day with a brutal QuakeEdge STAB from 19 Attack" it also takes random moves like a champ

so overall fightings, abra , pawn, chou, are stopped and that's the meta so

Yeah, so I decided to make myself a weird little team, focusing on Vullaby's offensive capabilities instead of using Vullaby's standard but imo underwhelming set.

I've used a lot of odd sets and spreads, so I'll briskly explain why:

Jac's Croagunk set wasn't originally what I had in mind, but after I found myself using Toxic as my move's were sorta redundant after building the first draft, I switched it to Earthquake set to put more pressure on opposing Gunk and Sunny beam ponyta.

Vullaby's NP set isn't running Weak Armor here, as I've found it to have less utility compared to being able to absorb Spore and set up on Foongus. NP Vullaby is still terrifying, boasting the same speed as Pawniard but with better coverage.

Ferroseed was the natural addition that strongly synergizes with the core. Taking on Archen, Chou, Spritz, ect while still setting hazards for Vullaby is kinda awesome. Ferro checks common removers, Shell smash users, fairies and pretty much everything.

I had Spitzee up next, but changed it to Lickitung after I added Chou because I was so weak to Sunny beam Pony and Drilbur. I changed up the Wish support moveset in order to get around these threats while still having decent enough coverage to have utility outside of that.

Chinchou's spread's allows it to win the Evio Chou vs Evio Chou battle. Also crushes BJ while still checking Fletch and acting as an effective pivot. I don't really like Hydro Pump because of misses being awful and because the burn damage is appreciated on this type of team.

SD Pawn synergizes with Vullaby by taking some of the burden of being the win condition, while also breaking stall. Pawn and Vullaby remove each other's primary checks, and Pawn provides Knock Off support and priority to give the team some teeth.

This team is based on an offensive core Croagunk bulky attacker + Vullaby Nasty Plot.
Bulky normals/fairies are beaten by Croagunk (Porygon Agility is however a threat for him). Rock Tomb lure Larvesta and some others mons.
Ferroseed counteract the EdgeQuake and the weaknesses of the core in general. Twave can support my team and prevents set-ups. Put the rocks is important too to break sturdies/sash.
My team was really slow, and I needed a spin for Vulla. Staryu was a good choice, it allows me to counter Drilbur Lead. HP Ground for Chinchou and Magne.
But I was weak to Fletch, so I chose Snubbull ST, who is my best check to bulky fights too.
A scarf was missing, and a koff too. Pawn was imo the best choice, trapping ghosts and breaking sashbra's sash for a future sweep.

My vote goes toward Jac. He has 3 of the best (imo) pokemon in the meta on a team and I love BO as a style. His cores look fun to abuse and he avoids using any of the really whore mons.

What made me chose the team is how solid it is, hazards stacking with bulky offense is a really underrated playstyle and I've always been a fan of Scarf Vullaby, so yeah he's got my vote.

I'm a sucker for hazards (and punches ;)), and I love Stunky. That thing is adorable. Also I really like triple Poison and Scarf Vull is a really fun mon. It's just a fun team to use, with a lot of cool mons.
