Introduction
Are you tired of facing stall? Are you contemplating using it yourself? Do you put your opponents in the vortex only to have them regen all that well-deserved damage off? Well, this is the team for you. Just a little introduction from me, I have played on showdown on and off since OR/AS and have recently started to play this gen once I heard about the absolute monsters in this metagame. Throughout my years of playing mons, I have encountered many stall teams. While they seemed intimidating to me at first, there were always some mons that could break straight through. In this RMT, I would like to introduce you to one of them.
Say hello to the Big, Bad, Bovine that is Terrakion.
Teambuilding Process
Terrakion, with a whopping 129 base Attack, coupled with a decent speed tier and excellent offensive typing with Rock/Fighting, make this mon excellent as a physical sweeper. However, what allows this mon to truly stand out, is the setup potential it has in Rock Polish + Swords Dance. With a Dual Dance + Stab moveset, Terrakion will be able to outspeed and KO many of the beasts that run rampant in this metagame. Against bulkier teams, Terrakion can set up SDs and absolutely obliterate some of the bulkier mons in the tier, OHKOing many common mons like Clefable, Mandibuzz, and Corviknight. Barring unaware mons and priority, Terrakion, once setup, can punch holes in many teams, and can win games by itself. At the very least, Terrakion can force progress and weaken other mons, such that your other members can clean up.
Every hero has their weakness and for Terrakion, it’s priority. Rock, while being an excellent offensive typing is terrible defensibly. Terrakion is weak to a plethora of priority moves that are oh so common in this metagame being Aqua Jet, Grassy Glide, and Bullet Punch. In order to combat this, I wanted to pick a defensive mon that would be able to soak up priority moves for Terrakion. Kommo-o is an excellent defensive mon that can take up this role, while also providing this team an opportunity to set up Stealth Rocks or Toxic to chip mons on the opposing team. Defensive Kommo-o is able to switch in on many Pokemon in the tier, some notable ones being Urshifu (SS AND RS), Physical Zeraora, Rillaboom, Scizor, and Excadrill. Kommo-o also has 3 excellent abilities for this metagame which can wall certain annoying mons in this tier. Bulletproof makes Kommo-o and excellent switch-in to Venusaur, a prominent threat on sun teams with Weather Ball and Sludge Bomb in its arsenal. Soundproof trivializes mons like Toxtricity from being a threat. Overall, Kommo-o is a great defensive mon to soak up priority and chip the opponent’s team in return.
With Kommo-o taking the brunt of moves aimed at Terrakion, it is inevitable that it would be worn down in the process. To combat this, I chose Clefable as a support and utility mon for this team. With Clefable’s Fairy typing and bulk, it can eat Dragon and Flying moves aimed at Kommo-o. At the same time it can provide Wish support to Kommo-o to allow it to switch in more frequently to mons that can KO Clef like Excadrill and Scizor. This type of support is also integral for revitalizing Terrakion if it takes a hit or two in order to wall break. Clefable can use utilize Teleport in order to bring Terrakion or other mons safely into a Wish, gaining important momentum for the team and providing pressure to your opponent at the same time. Clefable can also check more of the prominent mons in the tier such as Dragapult, Urshifu, Hydreigon, Hawlucha, and Kyurem. It also completely walls most variants of Mandibuzz and Kommo-o. Originally, I planned to use Jirachi since its typing synergized very well with Kommo-o’s, however I didn’t think it would provide as much utility as Clefable w/ Moonblast coverage + Teleport.
Since I had addressed the issues that Terrakion had on the offensive side, I now wanted to cover my defenses as well. I noticed that our team is very susceptible to Volcarona, and that it lacked an Earthquake immunity. It also does not have any form of hazard removal. Now that does sound like a bunch of problems, but luckily for us, there is a mon that addresses all these issues: Mandibuzz. Having Mandibuzz allows us to switch into a Volcarona and threaten a KO on it with Brave Bird. It can also do the same to setup mons like Grassy Seed Rillaboom and Hawlucha. A Specially Defensive Mandibuzz would also allow us to take Draco Meteors from Dragapult and Hydreigon. With Overcoat, it can also switch into annoying moves like Spore on bulkier teams. Mandibuzz can also benefit from Wish support from Clef, and provides a safe switch-in for Psychic type moves aimed at Kommo-o. With U-Turn, Mandibuzz can be used as a defensive pivot to bring in Terrakion, as well.
With the addition of Mandibuzz to the team, I wanted to add an electric immunity to my team so people don’t freely Volt-Switch on this team (particularly vs Mandibuzz). I was also looking for another pivot to bring in Terrakion as well. Zeraora can provide both these roles, with the additional function of acting as a form of speed control for faster mons like Dragapult. Zeraora also pressures some of the bulkier mons that can prove some trouble for Terrakion, such as Toxapex which can Haze away Terrak’s boosts. Zeraora can also bait in ground types and chip them for Terrakion with Toxic.
My last addition was Aegislash. I wanted to use a mon that could capitalize on some of the holes that Terrakion could make in opposing teams. Terrak can break through Mandibuzz, which opens the floor for Aegislash to break teams with its unique typing, and pressuring opponents with Shadow Ball + Flash Cannon. It also is a decent answer to Hawlucha, a mon that runs rampant on Terrain teams with Rillaboom. Being immune to Fighting type moves allows Aegislash to switch into Chansey/Blissey, but also makes your opponent think twice about clicking CC or Body Press in general. This team also has trouble with Fairy types, and with Aegislash, we can threaten mons like Clefable and Togekiss with a Flash Cannon.
The Team
Terrakion @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Justified
EVs: 20 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 232 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Stone Edge
- Close Combat
- Rock Polish
After a Swords Dance, Terrakion is able to KO many of the SS OU metagame mons, and 2HKOing some of the Bulkier mons in the game. With Weakness Policy, Terrakion can punish bulkier mons by setting up in the face of a Corviknight’s Body Press, Clef’s Moon Blast, and Pex’s Scald, easily getting to +3, which will OHKO those very mons. The EV spread runs 252 Atk and Jolly Nature to outrun Urshifu (Jolly), and is at 232 (EVs) to outspeed Modest Zam with 252 Speed EVs. The rest is invested into bulk, so that Terrak can live LO Adamant Jet from Crawdaunt/ AJ from Azu, and Bullet Punch from all variants of Scizor except Adamant + CB. Rock Polish allows Terrakion to decimate Sun and Rain teams by outspeeding and killing their weather setters + weather abusers (at +2).
Kommo-o @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 252 HP / 148 Def / 40 SpD / 68 Spe
Impish Nature
- Body Press
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
Kommo-o is able to eat up every form of priority aimed for Terrakion pretty well. It can also take Iron Heads and Poison Jabs intended for Clefable. With Rocky Helmet, this mon is able to chip the opposing team and set up Stealth Rocks, giving Terrakion and easier time to sweep. Kommo-o is Bulletproof to shut down mons like Venusaur from setting up and sweeping. With its defensive bulk, Kommo-o is able to KO sweepers like Crawdaunt and Excadrill with Body Press. Finally with Toxic, Kommo-o is able to put Bulky mons like Mandibuzz and Hippowdon on a timer, which improves Terrakion’s chances of sweeping.
Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Teleport
- Moonblast
- Wish
- Protect
This is the standard defensive spread for Clefable. It is here to switch into Urshifu’s Wicked Blows and CCs, but can also be used in conjunction with Kommo-o to scout for Urshifu’s other moves (Iron Head/Poison Jab). Wish/Protect allows Clefable to revitalize Kommo-o to chip the other team, and can be used to heal up Terrak to setup another wall break. Teleport is used to other members of the team to switch in safely. Clefable can also check many of the prominent threats in the tier like Dragapult, Hawlucha, Kyurem, Hydreigon, and Urshifu.
Mandibuzz (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 164 SpD / 96 Spe
Careful Nature
- Roost
- Defog
- U-turn
- Brave Bird
Mandibuzz is Specially Defensive to deal with Draco’s being dropped from Dragapult/Hydreigon, as well as for killing Volcarona with Brave Bird. HDB prevents damage from Rocks. Overcoat lets you switch into mons like Tangrowth and Amoongus to scout for powder moves and do damage/take initiative with Brave Bird and U-Turn respectively. Defog is here to clear spikes/toxic spikes which are annoying for the other team members. Mons like Clef, Magnezone, and Zeraora like to switch into this, so having U-Turn is very good for pivoting and bringing mons like Terrakion and Aegislash in.
Zeraora @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Aura Sphere
- Toxic
Zeraora’s speed tier is ridiculous, I haven’t seen mons this fast since Gen 3-4 with Ninjask and Deoxys speed. With it’s speed, Zeraora is able to get fast Volt-Switches off against a majority of the metagame (barring weather + scarfers), which provides beneficial chip damage for Terrakion. With HDB, Zeraora can avoid being worn down by hazards so that it can stay away from being outright KO’d by CB Grassy Glide and Urshifu Sucker Punch. I’ve decided to run a special set in order to deal more damage to Clefable, Corv, Defensive Toxapex, and to hit harder with Volt-Switch in general. My line of thinking for this is that if those bulkier mons stated above are defensive, my special Zeraora can hit them very hard. If those mons are specially defensive, Terrakion can then tear right through them. When testing this team, I contemplated using Grass knot instead of Toxic, but that when I did that, it was pretty annoying getting your opponent to actually stay in after you use it once (looking at you Hippo). Toxic, while having the chance to miss, permanently punishes your opponent’s switching into Kommo-o and Hippo to take you attack. Unaware Quagsire can be annoying to Terrak and Zeraora, but with Toxic, it doesn’t stand a chance for long.
Aegislash @ Life Orb
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 240 HP / 252 SpA / 16 Spe
Mild Nature
- Substitute
- Flash Cannon
- Shadow Ball
- Shadow Sneak
Aegislash hits ridiculously hard with its high stats and good typing. Many of the mons who give trouble to Terrakion such as Hippo and Clefable are easily dealt with LO Shadow Ball/Flash Cannon. You could run Choice Specs as well to hit harder, but this set definitely has more utility. With Substitute, you put additional pressure on your opponent to break the Sub while being at the mercy of whatever Aegislash decides to hit you with. Shadow Ball/Flash into Shadow Sneak KO many offensive mons like Urshifu and Dragapult. Sub forces Dragapult to force a KO on you with a Ghost move, so you could scout their set easily by pivoting to Kommo-o to chip, if physical, or go Mandibuzz if special. With this spread, Aegislash has enough speed to outspeed Clefable, but still has enough bulk to survive a specs Shadow Ball from Dragapult (WOW). I never played Ubers much, and therefore haven’t used Aegislash much either, but after doing some calcs, I can see why this mon was banned earlier. Anyways, with LO and Sub, Aegislash will definitely be worn down, but with Wish support, it can easily be revitalized.
Possible Threats
CM Zeraora
Zeraora, if setup, can pose a problem to this team. However, Terrakion will usually be able to take a hit and KO with CC/Edge.
Azumarill
Azumarill if brought into some of the Bulkier mons, such as Kommo-o or Mandibuzz can pose a big problem to the team. If you think it will go for a Belly Drum, it probably best to get chip on it with the mon you have and give Azu a sack to bring in Aegislash to Sneak. Kommo-o, if not sacked, can live a +6 Jet and KO with Rocky Helmet chip + EQ. If it doesn’t Drum you can use Zeraora to revenge kill it.
Specs Kyurem
Specs Kyurem barely has any switch ins(Much like Terrak + Aegislash). However this team is easily able to revenge kill it. Specs Earth Power cannot OHKO Aegislash, and Aegislash can KO it with Flash + Sneak.
Specs Kingdra in Rain
Kingdra, if specs can hit Extremely hard. However, depending on which move Kingdra locks into, you can Easily revenge kill it. Terrakion with Rock Polish can also shift the matchup in your favor, allowing you to outspeed Kingdra and KO it with some chip done prior.
Mons that Set up on Kommo-o:
Volcarona, SD Rillaboom/Hawlucha can set up on Kommo-o and threaten a KO w/ Psychic + Acro. However, Mandibuzz can switch into Volc, while Mandibuzz + Clef can deal with the other two.
Closing Thoughts
Thanks for reading this far! I really enjoyed making this team, and have gained a huge amount of respect for the amount of work many people go through to teambuild. I’ve always loved using my boys Terrakion and Keldeo, and I hope at the very least, I’ve given you some inspiration to use mons like Terrakion in the future. The SS OU metagame is filled with absolute monsters, and I can’t wait to see what happens when Lando and Heatran make their return (With Wish support in the back –oh god-). I honestly think this team is very flexible, and have tried using mons like Spec Analytic Zone instead of Aegislash to decimate other teams. Specs Kyurem is also on the rise, so maybe you all could use that in conjunction with Terrak too (Especially for when Lando comes back).
Let me know what you think of the team, and if you find some heat partners for Terrakion, let me know too!

- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
