[overview]
**Draft order**: Round 5 onwards
**Price range**: 8-9 points
**Overview**: Kilowattrel functions as a specially offensive pivot that offers speed control for a cheap price on teams that are lacking in Speed. It has access to strong STAB moves such as Thunderbolt and Hurricane, which can make it difficult for teams to switch into it; on top of this, it has access to U-turn to pivot around Ground-types that want to block it building momentum through Volt Switch. Kilowattrel can also be a beneficial secondary Tera Captain due to the fact this helps give it a coverage move that it may need endgames late-game or for breaking through any checks. Kilowattrel has good, usable abilities in Volt Absorb and Competitive, which both have good uses either offensively or defensively. However, Kilowattrel's flaws are that it's extremely frail, it's not very strong, and it has a non-existent movepool outside of its STAB moves, meaning it can’t be consistently used to revenge kill or break down an opposing team.
[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Offensive pivot**: Kilowattrel can use its Speed to get off a fast Volt Switch or U-turn against teams where it simply wants to use its momentum to bring in a wallbreaker. It can slowly chip Pokemon into KO ranges to open up a path for a setup sweeper to clean.
**Late-game cleaner**: Against weakened teams, Kilowattrel can look to take advantage of its Speed tier against teams that lack the resistances to its STAB attacks and even use Tera to break through a check to it.
**Wallbreaker**: Against teams that lack resistances to Kilowattrel's STAB moves, Kilowattrel can use damage-boosting items such as Choice Specs or Life Orb to increase its damage output further, enabling it to tear through defensive Pokemon. It can also Terastallize to maximize its wallbreaking potential to beat its checks; however, if Kilowattrel is using Choice Specs, this would mean Kilowattrel is not be able to run Heavy-Duty Boots, which can limit the amount of times Kilowattrel could come in to wallbreak if Stealth Rock is on the field.
Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB moves**: Thunderbolt, Hurricane, Thunder, Air Slash, Discharge
**Setup moves**: Agility
**Utility moves**: Volt Switch, U-turn, Roost, Thunder Wave, Substitute, Endure
**Coverage**: Tera Blast
Niche Moves
========
**Weather Ball**: Kilowattrel can be paired with weather such as snow or rain to gain a coverage move that allows it to hit Ground-types more successfully.
**Eerie Impulse / Feather Dance / Scary Face**: Since Kilowattrel is frail on the defensive side, it can use stat-dropping moves to dissuade a foe from setting up or allow it to duel another Pokemon it otherwise couldn't.
**Tailwind**: Using Tailwind on Kilowattrel can allow you to activate its ability, Wind Power, enabling it to use a stronger Electric-type STAB move while offering short-term speed control against setup Pokemon.
**Charge Beam**: Kilowattrel doesn't have ways of boosting its Special Attack from its movepool other than through Charge Beam. This would only be used when you are aiming for Kilowattrel to dominate late-game; however, this can be unreliable due to Charge Beam missing or even Charge Beam not raising Kilowattrel's Special Attack. On top of this, Kilowattrel is extremely frail, so it needs to guarantee it won't lose head-to-head against its foe if it ever decides to use Charge Beam.
Common Items
========
**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Since Kilowattrel is part Flying-type, it usually wants to run Heavy-Duty Boots to negate the Stealth Rock damage it is weak to, allowing it to consistently pivot in a game to get its teammates in.
**Damage-boosting items**: To consistently wallbreak, Kilowattrel can use damage-boosting items such as Choice Specs and Life Orb to increase its damage output, and when paired with Tera, Kilowattrel can break through its checks.
Niche Items
========
**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf can be used for speed control to try to outspeed other Speed-boosting Pokemon such as Iron Valiant, Greninja, and Enamorus.
**Leftovers**: If the opponent's team lacks access to Stealth Rock, or if Kilowattrel wants to use Substitute, it can use Leftovers for passive HP recovery. However, most teams will most likely have an entry hazard setter, and the fact that Kilowattrel has access to Roost does not make this item desirable to run most of the time.
**Salac / Petaya Berry**: Kilowattrel can use Endure coupled with a stat-boosting Berry as a last resort to set up, as its ways of setting up are extremely limited.
Tera
========
Since Kilowattrel suffers from a very mediocre movepool, having access to Tera opens up a pathway to beat opposing bulky Electric- and Ground-type Pokemon, as it can use Tera types such as Ice, Water, and Ground. Kilowattrel can also look to further increase damage from its regular STAB moves by using Tera Electric or Tera Flying to damage teams that lack resistances against these types. As Kilowattrel is usually very cheap to draft, it can become a very desirable secondary Tera Captain.
Draft Strategy
========
Kilowattrel is usually drafted in the later rounds where teams may still need speed control; therefore, you shouldn’t draft around Kilowattrel being the centrepiece of a team. However, you can still draft it for its reliable pivoting, (ac) and it can still function as a specially offensive piece for teams that need it. Since Kilowattrel is not expensive, you can afford to have it as a Tera Captain while also having the capability of drafting a higher-tier Pokemon in earlier rounds that would also do well with access to Tera.
**Physical wallbreakers**: Against teams where Kilowattrel lacks the damage to beat specially defensive Pokemon, Kilowattrel can look to pivot out into a wallbreaker that can deal with these Pokemon, such as Baxcalibur, Palafin, and Garchomp.
**Entry hazard removal**: If Kilowattrel opts to use a damage-boosting item instead of Heavy-Duty Boots, its longevity can plummet quickly, so it is important to draft hazard removal to be able to keep Kilowattrel healthy. Partners include Great Tusk, Excadrill, and Terapagos.
**Pivots**: Kilowattrel's access to U-turn allows it to be a great pivot, and when paired with hazards and other Pokemon that can slow pivot into Kilowattrel to bring it in safely, you can set up a strong VoltTurn playstyle. Examples of this include Uxie, Scizor, and Swampert.
Checks and Counters
========
**Specially defensive walls**: Kilowattrel's Special Attack is not overpowering, and it does not have access to setup moves to increase it other than Charge Beam, which can be unreliable to bring into a matchup, so naturally bulky specially defensive Pokemon can absorb multiple hits from Kilowattrel and prevent it from ever revenge killing successfully. Examples include Scream Tail, Clodsire, and Galarian Slowking.
**Resistances to Flying and Electric**: Bulky Ground-, Electric-, and even Dragon-type Pokemon can resist Kilowattrel's STAB moves with ease and threaten it out due to it lacking any sort of special breaking power without a damage-boosting item. Examples include Iron Treads, Sandy Shocks, and Latias.
**Offensive Pokemon**: Kilowattrel's defensive stats are not very impressive, rarely risking switching in on moves, as it gets 2HKOed by a large proportion of Pokemon, even by moves it resists. It is extremely prone to getting beat KOed by Pokemon with priority moves and Choice Scarf users, and even though it boasts an immunity to Ground, almost every Ground-type has access to a Rock-type move that can usually either OHKO or 2HKO Kilowattrel. Examples include Iron Hands, Dragonite, and Landorus-T.
**Knock Off**: In matchups where Kilowattrel aims to pivot around to enable its teammates as wallbreakers or wincons, it usually runs Heavy-Duty Boots to increase its longevity for as long as possible. However, if Kilowattrel ever gets hit by Knock Off, it will lose access to Heavy-Duty Boots while also losing a large chunk of its HP due to its poor defensive stats. This will limit Kilowattrel's longevity if Stealth Rock is set up. Kilowattrel does have access to Roost, so it can use this to regain HP to keep itself alive for further switches; however, this can be extremely easy to take advantage of, as it will allow the foe to switch freely into a wallbreaker or wincon to threaten your entire team.
