Draft Kilowattrel

Status
Not open for further replies.
[overview]
**Draft order**: Round 5 onwards

**Price range**: 8-9 points

**Overview**: Kilowattrel functions as a specially offensive pivot that offers speed control for a cheap price on teams that are lacking in Speed. It has access to strong STAB moves such as Thunderbolt and Hurricane, which can make it difficult for teams to switch into it; on top of this, it has access to U-turn to pivot around Ground-types that want to block it building momentum through Volt Switch. Kilowattrel can also be a beneficial secondary Tera Captain due to the fact this helps give it a coverage move that it may need endgames late-game or for breaking through any checks. Kilowattrel has good, usable abilities in Volt Absorb and Competitive, which both have good uses either offensively or defensively. However, Kilowattrel's flaws are that it's extremely frail, it's not very strong, and it has a non-existent movepool outside of its STAB moves, meaning it can’t be consistently used to revenge kill or break down an opposing team.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Offensive pivot**: Kilowattrel can use its Speed to get off a fast Volt Switch or U-turn against teams where it simply wants to use its momentum to bring in a wallbreaker. It can slowly chip Pokemon into KO ranges to open up a path for a setup sweeper to clean.

**Late-game cleaner**: Against weakened teams, Kilowattrel can look to take advantage of its Speed tier against teams that lack the resistances to its STAB attacks and even use Tera to break through a check to it.

**Wallbreaker**: Against teams that lack resistances to Kilowattrel's STAB moves, Kilowattrel can use damage-boosting items such as Choice Specs or Life Orb to increase its damage output further, enabling it to tear through defensive Pokemon. It can also Terastallize to maximize its wallbreaking potential to beat its checks; however, if Kilowattrel is using Choice Specs, this would mean Kilowattrel is not be able to run Heavy-Duty Boots, which can limit the amount of times Kilowattrel could come in to wallbreak if Stealth Rock is on the field.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB moves**: Thunderbolt, Hurricane, Thunder, Air Slash, Discharge

**Setup moves**: Agility

**Utility moves**: Volt Switch, U-turn, Roost, Thunder Wave, Substitute, Endure

**Coverage**: Tera Blast

Niche Moves
========

**Weather Ball**: Kilowattrel can be paired with weather such as snow or rain to gain a coverage move that allows it to hit Ground-types more successfully.

**Eerie Impulse / Feather Dance / Scary Face**: Since Kilowattrel is frail on the defensive side, it can use stat-dropping moves to dissuade a foe from setting up or allow it to duel another Pokemon it otherwise couldn't.

**Tailwind**: Using Tailwind on Kilowattrel can allow you to activate its ability, Wind Power, enabling it to use a stronger Electric-type STAB move while offering short-term speed control against setup Pokemon.

**Charge Beam**: Kilowattrel doesn't have ways of boosting its Special Attack from its movepool other than through Charge Beam. This would only be used when you are aiming for Kilowattrel to dominate late-game; however, this can be unreliable due to Charge Beam missing or even Charge Beam not raising Kilowattrel's Special Attack. On top of this, Kilowattrel is extremely frail, so it needs to guarantee it won't lose head-to-head against its foe if it ever decides to use Charge Beam.

Common Items
========
**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Since Kilowattrel is part Flying-type, it usually wants to run Heavy-Duty Boots to negate the Stealth Rock damage it is weak to, allowing it to consistently pivot in a game to get its teammates in.

**Damage-boosting items**: To consistently wallbreak, Kilowattrel can use damage-boosting items such as Choice Specs and Life Orb to increase its damage output, and when paired with Tera, Kilowattrel can break through its checks.

Niche Items
========
**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf can be used for speed control to try to outspeed other Speed-boosting Pokemon such as Iron Valiant, Greninja, and Enamorus.

**Leftovers**: If the opponent's team lacks access to Stealth Rock, or if Kilowattrel wants to use Substitute, it can use Leftovers for passive HP recovery. However, most teams will most likely have an entry hazard setter, and the fact that Kilowattrel has access to Roost does not make this item desirable to run most of the time.

**Salac / Petaya Berry**: Kilowattrel can use Endure coupled with a stat-boosting Berry as a last resort to set up, as its ways of setting up are extremely limited.

Tera
========
Since Kilowattrel suffers from a very mediocre movepool, having access to Tera opens up a pathway to beat opposing bulky Electric- and Ground-type Pokemon, as it can use Tera types such as Ice, Water, and Ground. Kilowattrel can also look to further increase damage from its regular STAB moves by using Tera Electric or Tera Flying to damage teams that lack resistances against these types. As Kilowattrel is usually very cheap to draft, it can become a very desirable secondary Tera Captain.

Draft Strategy
========
Kilowattrel is usually drafted in the later rounds where teams may still need speed control; therefore, you shouldn’t draft around Kilowattrel being the centrepiece of a team. However, you can still draft it for its reliable pivoting, (ac) and it can still function as a specially offensive piece for teams that need it. Since Kilowattrel is not expensive, you can afford to have it as a Tera Captain while also having the capability of drafting a higher-tier Pokemon in earlier rounds that would also do well with access to Tera.

**Physical wallbreakers**: Against teams where Kilowattrel lacks the damage to beat specially defensive Pokemon, Kilowattrel can look to pivot out into a wallbreaker that can deal with these Pokemon, such as Baxcalibur, Palafin, and Garchomp.

**Entry hazard removal**: If Kilowattrel opts to use a damage-boosting item instead of Heavy-Duty Boots, its longevity can plummet quickly, so it is important to draft hazard removal to be able to keep Kilowattrel healthy. Partners include Great Tusk, Excadrill, and Terapagos.

**Pivots**: Kilowattrel's access to U-turn allows it to be a great pivot, and when paired with hazards and other Pokemon that can slow pivot into Kilowattrel to bring it in safely, you can set up a strong VoltTurn playstyle. Examples of this include Uxie, Scizor, and Swampert.

Checks and Counters
========
**Specially defensive walls**: Kilowattrel's Special Attack is not overpowering, and it does not have access to setup moves to increase it other than Charge Beam, which can be unreliable to bring into a matchup, so naturally bulky specially defensive Pokemon can absorb multiple hits from Kilowattrel and prevent it from ever revenge killing successfully. Examples include Scream Tail, Clodsire, and Galarian Slowking.

**Resistances to Flying and Electric**: Bulky Ground-, Electric-, and even Dragon-type Pokemon can resist Kilowattrel's STAB moves with ease and threaten it out due to it lacking any sort of special breaking power without a damage-boosting item. Examples include Iron Treads, Sandy Shocks, and Latias.

**Offensive Pokemon**: Kilowattrel's defensive stats are not very impressive, rarely risking switching in on moves, as it gets 2HKOed by a large proportion of Pokemon, even by moves it resists. It is extremely prone to getting beat KOed by Pokemon with priority moves and Choice Scarf users, and even though it boasts an immunity to Ground, almost every Ground-type has access to a Rock-type move that can usually either OHKO or 2HKO Kilowattrel. Examples include Iron Hands, Dragonite, and Landorus-T.

**Knock Off**: In matchups where Kilowattrel aims to pivot around to enable its teammates as wallbreakers or wincons, it usually runs Heavy-Duty Boots to increase its longevity for as long as possible. However, if Kilowattrel ever gets hit by Knock Off, it will lose access to Heavy-Duty Boots while also losing a large chunk of its HP due to its poor defensive stats. This will limit Kilowattrel's longevity if Stealth Rock is set up. Kilowattrel does have access to Roost, so it can use this to regain HP to keep itself alive for further switches; however, this can be extremely easy to take advantage of, as it will allow the foe to switch freely into a wallbreaker or wincon to threaten your entire team.

**Draft order**: Round 5 onwards

**Price range**: 8-9 points

**Overview**: Kilowattrel functions as a specially offensive pivot while also that offerings speed control for teams that are lacking in it Speed. Would be good to mention its cheap price being one of its good selling points. It has access to strong STAB moves such as Thunderbolt and Hurricane which can make it difficult for teams to switch into it; on top of this, it has access to U-turn for when to pivot around Ground-types that want to block momentum through Volt Switch. Kilowattrel can also be a beneficial secondary Tera Captain due to the fact this helps give it a coverage move which it may need for endgames or for beating past any checks. Kilowattrel boasts a plethora of usable abilities, such as Volt Absorb and Competitive which can be used to take advantage of stat drops, such as through Defog, Intimidate, and Parting Shot both have good uses either offensively or defensively. Don't need to mention Competitive's ability. Just say how both its abilities are useful either offensively or defensively. However, Kilowattrel's flaws are that its is extremely frail, not very strong, and has a very mediocre non-existent movepool outside of its STAB moves, so meaning it can’t be consistently used to revenge or break down an opposing team.

Common Roles
========
**Offensive pivot**: Kilowattrel can look to use its Speed to get off a fast Volt Switch or U-turn against teams where it simply wants to use its momentum to bring in a wallbreaker. It can slowly chip Pokemon into range of KOs to open up a path for a set up sweeper to clean.

**Late-game cleaner**: Against weakened teams, Kilowattrel can look to take advantage of its Speed tier against teams that lack the resists to its STAB attacks, and even use Tera to beat past a check to it.

**Wallbreaker**: Against teams that lack resists to Kilowattrel STAB moves, Kilowattrel can use items such as Choice Specs to increase its damage output further to tear through defensive Pokemon or to make use of a stronger Volt Switch - it can also Terrastalize to maximize its wallbreaking potential to beat its checks if there is a Pokemon that resists its STAB moves; however if Kilowattrel is using Choice Specs, this would mean Kilowattrel would not be able to run Heavy-Duty Boots which could can limit the amount of times Kilowattrel could come in to wallbreak if Stealth Rocks are ever is on the field. Could mention Life Orb or any damage boosting item here.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB moves**: Thunderbolt, Hurricane, Thunder, Air Slash, Volt Switch, Discharge, Charge Beam

**Setup moves**: Agility Moved Charge Beam to Primary STAB Moves

**Utility moves**: U-turn, Roost, Thunder Wave, Substitute, Endure

**Coverage**: Tera Blast

Niche Moves
========
**Eerie Impulse/Feather Dance/Scary Face**: Since Kilowattrel is frail on the defensive side, it can use stat-dropping moves to prevent being setup fodder or to attempt to 1v1 a Pokemon.

**Tailwind**: Using Tailwind on Kilowattrel can allow you to activate its ability Wind Power to use a stronger STAB Electric-type move, while offering short term Speed control against setup Pokemon.

**Weather Ball**: Kilowattrel can be paired with weather such as Snow or Rain to gain a coverage move that allows it to hit Ground-types more successfully.

Common Items
========
**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Since Kilowattrel is part Flying-type, it usually wants to run Heavy-Duty Boots to negate entry hazard damage so it can consistently pivot in a game to get its teammates in.

**Damage-boosting items**: To consistently wallbreak, Kilowattrel can use Damage-boosting items such as Choice Specs or Life Orb to increase its damage output and when paired with Tera, Kilowattrel can beat past checks to it.

Niche Items
========
**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf can be used for Speed control to try and outspeed other Speed-boosting Pokemon such as Booster Energy Iron Valiant, Battle Bond Greninja, and Choice Scarf Enamorus-I.

**Leftovers**: If the opponents team lacks access to Stealth Rock or if Kilowattrel wants to use Substitute, it can use Leftovers for passive HP recovery. This is really uncommon however as most teams will most likely have a entry hazard setter and the fact that Kilowattrel has access to Roost does not make this item desirable to run most of the time.

**Salac/Petaya Berry**: Kilowattrel can use Endure coupled with a stat-boosting Berry as a last resort to set up as its ways of setting up are extremely limited.

Tera
========
Since Kilowattrel suffers from a very mediocre movepool - having its only coverage move being Weather Ball which may only be used in scenarios using Weather which teams may not want to build around Doesn't need to be mentioned given Weather Ball was explored in Niche moves, having access to Tera on it opens up a pathway to beat opposing bulky Electric- and Ground-type Pokemon as it can use Tera-types such as Ice, Water, and Ground. Kilowattrel can also look to further increase its regular STAB moves by using Tera Electric or Tera Flying to damage teams that lack resists against these typings. Kilowattrel can shed its weakness to Electric moves if it opts for Tera Flying due to having access to Volt Absorb; and if it goes Tera Ground, this can allow Kilowattrel to opt for a different ability instead such as Competitive or Wind Power which may have a better matchup. Not sure if its worth mentioning, given Volt Absorb is common to run and Tera Ground was mentioned briefly. As Kilowattrel is usually very cheap to draft, it can become a very desirable secondary Tera Captain to have on a draft to force even more prep your opponent needs to do.

Draft Strategy
========
Kilowattrel doesn’t go drafted until towards the later rounds of drafts where teams may still need Speed control, so you shouldn’t draft around Kilowattrel being the centrepiece of a team. (added period) However, (added comma) you can still draft it for its reliable pivoting and it can still function as a specially offensive piece for teams that need it. Since Kilowattrel is not expensive, you can afford to have it as a Tera Captain while also having the capability on drafting a high tier Pokemon in earlier rounds that would also like to have access to Tera.

**Physical Wallbreakers**: Against teams where Kilowattrel lacks the damage to beat specially defensive Pokemon and the plan is to Tera your higher tier Pokemon instead of Kilowattrel, Kilowattrel can look to pivot out into a wallbreaker that can deal with these Pokemon instead. Examples include Baxcalibur, Palafin, and Garchomp.

**Entry hazard removal**: If Kilowattrel opts to go a damage-boosting item over Heavy-Duty Boots, its longevity over the game can plummet quickly so it is important to draft hazard removal to be able to keep Kilowattrel healthy. Examples include Great Tusk, Excadrill, and Terapagos.

**Pivots**: Kilowattrels access to U-turn allows it to be a great pivot, and when paired with hazards and other Pokemon that can slow pivot into Kilowattrel to bring it in safely, you can set up a strong VoltTurn playstyle that will make it really hard for your opponent to answer. Examples of this include Uxie, Scizor, and Swampert.

**Weather setters**: This role is not important compared to the other ones, however if Kilowattrel does not have access to Tera or if the gameplan doesn’t need Kilowattrel to Tera, it can use Weather instead to gain coverage through Weather Ball for bulky Ground-types that can take advantage of non-Tera Kilowattrel. Examples include Snow Warning Ninetales-A, Chilly Reception Galarian Slowking, and Drizzle Pelipper. Feel like this section doesn't need to be included, given how niche Weather Ball is and how much dedication there is to commit to having additional coverage when Kilowattrel isn't that important in general.

Checks and Counters
========
**Specially Defensive Pokemon Walls**: Kilowattrel's Special Attack is not overpowering and it does not have access to set up moves to increase it other than Charge Beam which can be unreliable to bring into a matchup, so naturally bulky specially defensive Pokemon can absorb multiple hits from Kilowattrel and prevent it from ever revenge killing successfully. Examples include Scream Tail, Clodsire, and Galarian Slowking.

**Resistances**: Bulky Ground, Electric, and even Dragon type Pokemon can look to resist Kilowattrels STAB moves with ease and threaten out Kilowattrel due to it lacking any sort of special breaking power if not coupled with a damage-boosting item. Examples include Zapdos, Sandy Shocks, and Latias. Of course, Kilowattrel can pivot out into a wallbreaker that can deal with these typings or if it has access to Tera, can flip the scenario and threaten out the Pokemon that originally resisted it.

**Offensive Pokemon**: Kilowattrels defensive stats are not very impressive, making it can rarely risk switching in on moves as it gets 2KOd by a large proportion of Pokemon, being even 2KOd by moves it should resist. It is extremely prone to getting beat by strong priority Pokemon and even though it boasts an immunity to Ground-types, almost every Ground-type has access to a Rock-type move which can successfully either KO Kilowattrel or 2KO it. Examples include Iron Hands, Extreme Speed Dragonite, and Landorus-T. Feel like you can mention Choice Scarfers given they can catch it off guard easily.

**Knock Off**: In matchups where Kilowattrel aims to pivot around to enable its teammates to work as wallbreakers or wincons, it usually runs Heavy-Duty Boots to increase its longevity as long as possible. However, if Kilowattrel ever gets hit by Knock Off, it will lose access to Heavy-Duty Boots while also losing a large chunk of its HP due to its poor defensive stats. This makes it very awkward for Kilowattrel attempting to switch into Fighting-types which it resists as a large amount of them will have access to Knock Off. Feels redundant given its established frailty. This will limit Kilowattrel's (added apostrophe) time it can have switching in on the field if entry hazards are ever set up as it was will gradually take damage until it dies faints. Kilowattrel does have access to Roost, so it can possibly use this to regain HP to keep itself alive for further switches, however this can be extremely easy to take advantage of as it will allow the opponent to switch freely into a wallbreaker or wincon of their own to threaten your entire team.

Kilowattrel is usually drafted in the later rounds where teams may still need speed control; (rc, asc) therefore, you shouldn’t draft around Kilowattrel being the centrepiece of a team. However, you can still draft it for its reliable pivoting, (ac) and it can still function as a specially offensive piece for teams that need it. Since Kilowattrel is not expensive, you can afford to have it as a Tera Captain while also having the capability of drafting a higher-tier Pokemon in earlier rounds that would also like to have do well with access to Tera.

**Entry hazard removal**: If Kilowattrel opts to go use a damage-boosting item over instead of Heavy-Duty Boots, its longevity over the game can plummet quickly, (ac) so it is important to draft hazard removal to be able to keep Kilowattrel healthy. Partners include Great Tusk, Excadrill, and Terapagos.

**Pivots**: Kilowattrel's (aa) access to U-turn allows it to be a great pivot, and when paired with hazards and other Pokemon that can slow pivot into Kilowattrel to bring it in safely, you can set up a strong VoltTurn playstyle. Examples of this include Uxie, Scizor, and Swampert.

Checks and Counters
========
**Specially defensive walls**: Kilowattrel's Special Attack is not overpowering, (ac) and it does not have access to setup (rs) moves to increase it other than Charge Beam, (ac) which can be unreliable to bring into a matchup, so naturally bulky specially defensive Pokemon can absorb multiple hits from Kilowattrel and prevent it from ever revenge killing successfully. Examples include Scream Tail, Clodsire, and Galarian Slowking.

**Resistances to Flying and Electric**: Bulky Ground-, Electric-, and even Dragon-type Pokemon can resist Kilowattrel's (aa) STAB moves with ease and threaten it out due to it lacking any sort of special breaking power without a damage-boosting item. Examples include Iron Treads, Sandy Shocks, and Latias.

**Offensive Pokemon**: Kilowattrel's (aa) defensive stats are not very impressive, making it rarely risking switching in on moves, (ac) as it gets 2HKOd 2HKOed by a large proportion of Pokemon, even by moves it should resist resists. It is extremely prone to getting beat KOed by Pokemon with priority moves and Choice Scarf users, (rh, ac) and even though it boasts an immunity to Ground-types, almost every Ground-type has access to a Rock-type move which that can usually either OHKO Kilowattrel or 2HKO it Kilowattrel. Examples include Iron Hands, Dragonite, and Landorus-T.

**Knock Off**: In matchups where Kilowattrel aims to pivot around to enable its teammates to work as wallbreakers or wincons, it usually runs Heavy-Duty Boots to increase its longevity for as long as possible. However, if Kilowattrel ever gets hit by Knock Off, it will lose access to Heavy-Duty Boots while also losing a large chunk of its HP due to its poor defensive stats. This will limit Kilowattrel's longevity if Stealth Rock is set up. Kilowattrel does have access to Roost, so it can use this to regain HP to keep itself alive for further switches; (rc, asc) however, (ac) this can be extremely easy to take advantage of, (ac) as it will allow the opponent foe to switch freely into a wallbreaker or wincon of their own to threaten your entire team.
