itt post your favorite movies (or general movie discussion)

Jeez, lots of Star Wars haters in here. The original Trilogy is not only my favorite set of films, but probably just my favorite thing in general. Judge me if you will. I have no shame.

by dated, i understood "movies only considered good for their time"

not "special effects are dated", or "that movie is old"

there are plenty of old movies that are still relevant. star wars does not count amongst them
Say what you will about the quality of the films, but it's delusional to say that Star Wars isn't relevant today. It had an enormous influence on the movie industry and created a huge fan base.

pop culture relevance and film making quality relevance are two distinct sorts of relevance

posit a guess as to which i meant

at the end of the day the empire has range with pinpoint precision in the form of laser guns
Although this is going a little off topic, i had to lol at the pinpoint accuracy comment. Throughout the series (at least on screen) stormtroopers are notoriously bad shots (though to play a little devil's advocate, Obi Wan states the blast points on the sand crawler on Tatooine are too accurate for the Tusken Raiders, and must belong to storm troopers). In fact when baddies in other movies can't shoot the hero they are sometimes referred to having "gone to storm trooper shooting academy".

fair enough. but the technology is supposed to be pinpoint, presumably given how advanced it is. just that it would be inconvenient for the plot for a main character to be hit by a stray laser... whats it called? plot shield

typical action movie fare i suppose... not to say star wars is any less for it

Fight Club and Battle Royale are both very high on my list. Inception is also very high on my list of all time favorite movies, i think people don't think of Inception as a meaningful movie that is meant to be artistic, and thats why it probably won't ever win any awards. V for Vendetta was pretty underrated too, i think of you had read the graphic novel you would appreciate the movie more. To be honest I don't understand why V for Vendetta was poorly reviewed, the acting is competent and in the most important scenes it is excellent, and aside from that the story is compelling. The only reason that I can think of is that the plot is hard to follow, but that was how the comic was written so people should get over it.

Beethoven & Beethoven's 2nd:

When I was ten, I first watched this classic family movie, but I wasn't too interested yet until 2006 and last year, well at least it's still memorable even now.

That movie is Beethoven, aired on 1992. It centers around a St.Bernard puppy which quickly grows into a bigger dog, but only after escaping from the clutches of dog-nappers secretly doing cruel animal experiments, headed by that creepy Dr.Varnick who tries to "test" some ammunitions by shooting animals. And the puppy's named Beethoven after Emily played that famous portion of Ludwig van Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.

The movie also has a sequel, Beethoven's 2nd, where our favorite mutt had discovered a girlfriend of his own --- another St.Bernard named Missy. Too bad this is the only good sequel, as Beethoven's 3rd and its successors doesn't have Charles Grodin (who played George Newton) and the rest of the original Newton family members anymore.

Here's my favorite part from Part One of Beethoven...

Even kid's movies have gun-toting villains.

I watched In Bruges yesterday and it blew my mind constantly. The dog scene had me in stitches, jesus christ. ambiguous ending gives it bonus points too

this movie is great. sometimes me and my friend will still watch it and talk along with all the dialog.

also, star wars. im not allowed to watch it with my friends anymore, because i know the dialog of the original trilogy by heart and i just talk along with the characters. who knew?

also,

note how the indian chief's headdress says "kosher for pesach"

EDIT: I just went through the rest of this thread, and i saw some of my favorites already mentioned. Anything pixar (including Toy Story and Up) anything Miyazaki (including Spirited Away and my Neighbor Totoro), the Maltese Falcon, Singing in the Rain, and the Good, the Bad, And the Ugly, and the blues brothers are among my favorites.

My top 5 favorite movies would probably have to be Trading Places, Coming to America, Ghostbusters, Blazing Saddles and Revenge of the Nerds. I've got a thing for 70s-80s comedies.

I was watching the Fellowship of the Ring yesterday and I have to say that the movies are just so amazing. I didn't like to the books as they were too dense for me and I tend to skim read, but for a movie to get people who would otherwise never associate with wizards, dragons, elves, dwarves, and other DnD esque things and get said people to sit though those exact things and enjoy it and two other near three hour movies, that's what makes it so fantastic.

Not to mention the amazing story, acting, cinematography, everything else.

Figures that JeffreyLebowski likes The Big Lebowski, lol.

I won't bother listing favourites since they're already here (Oldboy!)

Lock stock 'n Two Smoking Barrels, wonder why no one's mentioned this? Was fairly popular last time I checked.

Leon the Professional, awesome.

Ip man (2008), yeah, it's kung fu, I'm asian, sue me. When a dude beats ten other dudes with wing chun, I gotta love it.

Chocolate (2008), lol, it's like a huge retard fight (at the risk of being called politically incorrect) very enjoyable though.

Requiem for a Dream, very haunting. Don't do drugs, kids.

Not enough of an film enthusiast to list many more, but after browsing through this thread I'm definitely going to check out some of the titles mentioned (thank god for stills).

It's not just because it's one of the funniest movies released in a long time, but because it's just so mean and vicious and nasty in its satire; you get the feeling that the people who worked on this hate making movies more than anything else on earth. Hilarious.

@Luduan: So, so glad to see some love for Le Passion de Jeanne d'Arc.

Also if science fiction doesnt date, then it probably isnt actually science fiction. The nature of speculating about a potential future basically guarantees that in the future your speculations will be wrong.
I agree with this, for the most part (particularly in literature).
I just want to point out that the plot of Star Wars is supposed to take place in the past (long long ago) and in another galaxy or dimension or whatever (far far away).
I don't think the series speculates at all about the future of Earth.

So I just saw Sucker Punch and it was totally awesome. The ladies looked good, the action scenes were intense, and the plot kept you guessing (much more so than Inception)

Keep in mind I am a big Zack Snyder fan so my opinion might be biased, but I thought it was great

As for favorite movies the best recent movie I've seen is Black Swan. Portman was always a wonderful actor and she did extremely well playing Nina...

The reason people are so obsessed with Star Wars, specifically Episode 5 is because it's one of the few movies where the bad guy wins. Luke gets his arm chopped off, Han Solo is frozen, the Empire is close to taking over the galaxy(universe?). Of course there are some really corny parts of it. The Death Star having ONE weak spot that'll completely blow it up. I didn't have much trouble with the Ewoks being very useful though. It's the same idea with Vietnam, they know their forests and everything better than the Empire, and Knowledge is power in battle and war. I'm not saying it's a terrific movie. I'm not saying it's my favorite. But some of you (CK) don't even get why people think they're good movies and that's nonsense.

As for favorite movies the best recent movie I've seen is Black Swan. Portman was always a wonderful actor and she did extremely well playing Nina as a sweet girl slowly going into madness through her constant need for perfection and no positive reinforcement (and not to mention that unhealthy eating disorder!) Anyway, it was truly a terrific film and if you haven't yet seen it I really think you should.

I, however, am a man of the classics. I love watching 2001: A Space Odyssey. To this day I still think that it's a very relevant movie and despite it being very 'slow,' as some people put it, it's very well shot, acted, and directed. Though it took a few watches to actually get, but once I did I really enjoyed it that much more. If you haven't made through it I think you should!

Dogtooth, a relatively unknown movie -- but terrific all the same as long as you don't mind subtitles. It's about three teenagers which are confined to their home by their own father, who tricked them into thinking the outside was dangerous. The one boy there has an escort who settles his man-urges to make sure he doesn't do anything to the sisters. However the escort kind of gets with one of the girls and then all hell breaks loose anyway you should definitely see it.

A Clockwork Orange, drugged milk, psychopaths, and crime involved society. I would try to sum up this movie, but it's really difficult for me to think of an accurate way to put it.

A recent movie that I saw that absolutely loved was Moon. A man mining Helium 3 on the moon for three years with a robotic companion. One day, an accident occurs and the man finds himself inside, figuring his companion brought him in he thinks nothing of it. However after discovering something where his accident took place, he questions his own sanity and the company which hired him. He then tries to find his own way off the moon.

i really want to see fight club, clockwork orange, and silence of the lambs within the next few years.
reporting that i have now successfully seen all three of these. :toast:

a clockwork orange, as genny put it, was really spectacular. i liked it almost as much as 2001. fight club was also great, but silence of the lambs wasn't really my thing (though it was still very well done).

i also saw toy story 3, which was probably the best movie of 2010. black swan was good too, but jesus, those goddamn toys...

The Fighter, The King' Speech, and Forrest Gump are all amazing movies. Raging Bull is also a great movie; likely Robert De Niro at his finest.

Someone mentioned Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. I wanna second that and add Snatch. Snatch has some of the funniest scenes ever. Tyrone is hilarious.

"How did you not see that?"
"It was a funny angle."
"It was directly behind you, Tyrone."

"I got extra loud blanks."
"Why, so we can deafen them to death?"
