Nasty Plot (Hydrapple) @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Grassium Z / Dragonium Z
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 112 Def / 16 SpA / 132 Spe or 244 HP / 252 SpA / 12 Spe
Modest Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Fickle Beam / Draco Meteor / Recover
- Leaf Storm / Giga Drain / Energy Ball / Recover
- Earth Power
[SET COMMENTS]
Hydrapple is a decent wallbreaker thanks to its high Special Attack, good natural bulk, and ability Regenerator letting it stay healthy and pressure checks like Mega Venusaur and Celesteela throughout the game. Nasty Plot's boost to Special Attack lets Hydrapple deal massive damage to foes like Aegislash, Clefable, and Iron Hands. Fickle Beam hits Grass-resistant Pokemon like Mega Latias and Salamence, and if it doubles Base Power, it can threaten significant damage against Mega Venusaur and Amoonguss, OHKOing them at +2, while Draco Meteor lets Hydrapple threaten significant reliable damage against the aforementioned Grass-types. Leaf Storm OHKOes Clefable at +2, and Giga Drain provides extra recovery at the cost of a significant loss in power, while Energy Ball provides a decent chance to OHKO Mega Tyranitar at +2 after Stealth Rock without any drawbacks. Recover can be used over a STAB move to let Hydrapple use Steel-types like Skarmory and Celesteela as setup fodder. Heavy-Duty Boots protects it from entry hazards, allowing it to better check threats like Thundurus-T and non-Hidden Power Ice Keldeo. Both Grassium Z and Dragonium Z allow Hydrapple to OHKO Swords Dance Iron Hands at +2, but Grassium Z in combination with Leaf Storm allows it to OHKO Mega Tyranitar prior to setting up, while Dragonium Z in combination with Draco Meteor helps it muscle past checks like Mega Venusaur and Assault Vest Tangrowth, dealing significant damage to them unboosted. Earth Power threatens Steel-types like Excadrill and Bisharp as well as Poison-types like Pecharunt and Iron Moth. 132 Speed EVs and 16 Special Attack EVs alongside a Modest nature let Hydrapple outspeed and OHKO Magic Guard Clefable at +2 with Leaf Storm; alternatively, 244 Special Attack EVs can be run instead to maximize power, with 12 Speed EVs to outspeed Ting-Lu. Hydrapple is typically used on balance and bulky offense teams that appreciate its ability to check a myriad of offensive threats while being able to pressure the opponent's team. Frailer offensive teammates like Enamorus and Victini appreciate Hydrapple's ability to check some of their own checks like Rotom-W, letting them rip holes in or sweep through the opponent's team; in return, Victini threatens Steel-types like Scizor and Jirachi, while Enamorus can lure Mega Venusaur and Amoonguss and do significant damage with Psychic. Hydrapple struggles to make progress against Steel-types; it can't meaningfully damage Scizor, and requires Recover to not be forced out by Celesteela, making Fire-types that can threaten them like Iron Moth and Victini excellent teammates; Hydrapple can also support Victini by threatening Water-types like Slowbro and Rotom-W, as well as Iron Moth by threatening Ting-Lu and Mega Tyranitar. Many faster Pokemon like Enamorus, Latios, and Iron Moth outspeed Hydrapple and can threaten to OHKO it with their STAB moves, so teammates that can deal with them like Celesteela, Mega Tyranitar, and Ting-Lu, respectively, are appreciated. These teammates also benefit from Hydrapple's presence; it can check Electric-types like Rotom-W and Zeraora for Celesteela, Mega Tyranitar appreciates it checking Ground-types like Ting-Lu and Hippowdon, and Ting-Lu benefits from it checking Water-types like Keldeo and the aforementioned Rotom-W.
