Hippowdon is a special wall able to check common offensive Pokemon such as Tapu Koko, Mega Diancie, and Magnezone. It does, however, face severe competition as a Ground-type from Gliscor, Gastrodon, and Landorus-T, which bring more defensive utility and offensive presence, making Hippowdon difficult to justify despite its better raw bulk. It's also quite a subpar Stealth Rock setter, as it loses to the most common removal options in the tier, notably Tapu Fini and Corviknight. Toxic lets it limit its passivity, punishing switch-ins such as Tangrowth, Slowbro, and Zapdos. Whirlwind is just as good to phaze Pokemon such as Gliscor, Landorus-T, Calm Mind Clefable, and Mega Scizor that try to take advantage of it. Whirlwind also racks up chip damage on the opposing team thanks to the Stealth Rock and sand Hippowdon provides. However, since both moves compete for one moveslot, Hippowdon will always be passive against a substantial number of Pokemon. Leftovers is the preferred item to help it check Tapu Koko and Magnezone. However, Heavy-Duty Boots can also be run to bypass Hippowdon's overbearing weakness to Toxic Spikes and Spikes. The Attack investment lets Hippowdon's Earthquake always OHKO Excadrill.

Pokemon that appreciate Hippowdon checking Electric-types, such as Corviknight, Skarmory, and Toxapex, make stellar defensive cores alongside it; in return, they can help cover its weakness to Grass- and Water-types such as Tangrowth, Rillaboom, Ash-Greninja, and Manaphy. Status severely cripples Hippowdon, as Toxic severely worsens its longevity, while burn makes it unable to threaten the likes of Toxapex and Galarian Slowking. Therefore, clerics like Chansey and Clefable make for good teammates; Chansey also appreciates Hippowdon freeing up its Stealth Rock moveslot. Corviknight, Mega Scizor, and Gliscor totally wall Hippowdon and remove its Stealth Rock or set up on it, so teammates that can handle these threats such as Heatran, Tapu Koko, Weavile, and Mega Latias are key to having Hippowdon function.

A physically defensive variant can theoretically be used, as it checks Zeraora, Mega Lopunny, and Mega Tyranitar. However, Hippowdon is strictly inferior to the other Ground-types in the tier at checking these. Ice Fang can threaten Landorus-T and Garchomp but Toxic and Whirlwind are more useful. Sand Force can also be run if your team dislikes the chip damage from sand, and it avoids powering up Mega Garchomp, but generally chipping down the opposing team is more worth it than not.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Steel-types Not Weak to Ground**: The likes of Corviknight, Skarmory, Ferrothorn, and Mega Scizor freely come in on Hippowdon, as it's unable to meaningfully damage them. This allows them to remove its entry hazard, set up their own, or use non-Whirlwind variants as setup fodder.

**Status**: Toxic from the likes of Heatran, Zeraora, and Toxapex completely removes any longevity Hippowdon has, letting the likes of Heatran, Zeraora, and Magnezone overpower it. Meanwhile, getting burnt by Slowbro, Galarian Slowking, or Toxapex makes it entirely passive.

**Grass-types**: Grass-types such as Kartana, Tangrowth, Rillaboom, and Serperior can switch into Hippowdon and force it out with their STAB moves, Rillaboom is notable because its Grassy Terrain makes Hippowdon's Earthquake weaker, letting other teammates switch in.

**Water-types**: Both offensive and defensive Water-types pose a serious issue to Hippowdon. The likes of Slowbro, Rotom-W, and Tapu Fini threaten it with Scald and shrug off its Earthquake, while Greninja, Urshifu-R, and Manaphy can force it out with their powerful Water-type attacks, but they struggle to switch due to Earthquake.

Hippowdon serves a niche in being a fantastic mixed special wall, being able to check a plethora of common offensive Pokemon such as Magnezone, Zeraora, Mega Diancie, (this is probably one of the biggest reasons to use it, i wld fs include it) Tapu Koko, and non-z move Heatran. downplay this sentence a bit, “fantasic” and “check a plethora of common offensive” is rlly making this c tier mon seem top tier, and instead focus on its postitves more as a ground that doesnt fear hp ice and checks diancie . It does, however, face stark competition as a Ground-type from Gliscor, Gastrodon, and Landorus-T, as what they lack in raw bulk they make up for in defensive utility, offensive presence, and general lack of passivity. really focus on how much competition it faces here, and why its hard to justify it over other grounds It's also quite a subpar Stealth Rock setter, as it loses to the most common removal options in the tier, notably Tapu Fini and Corviknight. Toxic lets it limit its passivity, being able to punish switch-ins such as Tangrowth, Slowbro, and Zapdos. It can also run Whirlwind, to let it phase out Pokemon such as Gliscor, Landorus-T, and Mega Scizor that try to set up on take advantage of it it. mention how if it picks ww, it loses to anything fat, and if it picks tox, it lets everything setup for free, so this is a shitty choice to make as it wants both Leftovers are the preferred item as the passive recovery it gives it helpful for letting Hippowdon check Heatran Tapu Koko and Magnezone, (rc) .(ap)howeverHowever, Heavy-Duty Boots can also be run to let Hippowdon ignore entry hazards and stay healthy expand on how susceptible hippo is to hazards, esp tspikes and spikes. The aAttack investment lets Hippowdon's Earthquake always OHKO Excadrill.

Pokemon that appreciate Hippowdon's ability to check Electric-types, such as Corviknight, Skarmory, and Toxapex make for a stellar defensive core alongside it. It is incredibly weak to Grass- and Water-types, the likes of Tangrowth, Rillaboom, Ash-Greninja, Slowbro, and Manaphy are incredibly threatening for it, as such running answers to these such as Zapdos, Corviknight, Toxapex, and Tapu Koko make for a stellar combination. combine this and the first sentence together Status also severely cripples Hippowdon, as Toxic makes its longevity severely worsened severely worsens its longevity. mMeanwhile getting Burned burnt makes it unable to threaten damage the likes of Toxapex and Slowking-G. As such,(ac) clerics like Chansey and Clefairy Clefable make for good teammates. Corviknight totally walls Hippowdon and can consistently keep its Stealth Rocks off the field due to Pressure and Defog, as such running teammates that can handle Corviknight such as Heatran, Tapu Koko, and Magnezone is key to having Hippowdon function. a lot of other mons also wall it, ie skarm, mzor and glisc so mention those as well

A Physically Defensive variant holding a Groundium Z is able to check Mega Mawile lol no, mention smtg like lop or driller here, smtg that it actually checks, however its easily overwhelmed by Swords Dance. Ice Fang can be used to threaten Landorus-T, Gliscor, and Garchomp, but Earthquake is more useful dropping eq for fang sounds and is horrendous, you drop ww / tox, reword this and mentuon how u can just tox / ww those as they arent rlly issues bar glisc who u can ww asw. Sand Force can also be ran if your team dislikes the chip from Sand, but generally chipping down the opposing team is more worth it than not.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ground-resistant Steel-types reword this bc non of these actually resist ground, to smtg along the lines of “non ground weak steels” **: The likes of Corviknight, Skarmory, Ferrothorn, and Mega Scizor are able to freely come in on Hippowdon, as its entirely unable to damage them,(rc).(ap) Letting Allowing them to either Rremove its Hhazards, set up their own, or use it as set up fodder.

**Status**: Status from the likes of Heatran, Zeraora, and Toxapex completely ruin Hippowdon as Toxic completely removes any longevity it has, letting it be overpowered by the likes of Heatran, Zeraora, and Magnezone. Meanwhile, Burn makes it entirely passive. separate these into 2 separate sentences, and highlight the spreaders of both status

**Grass-types**: Grass-types such as Kartana, Tangrowth, Rillaboom, and Serperior are able to switch into Hippowdon and threaten it out with their stab moves, Rillaboom and Tapu Bulu are is notable as its Grassy Terrain makes Hippowdons Earthquake weaker, letting other teammates switch in.

**Water-types**: Both offensive and defensive Water-types pose a serious issue to Hippowdon. the The likes of Slowbro, Rotom-W, and Tapu Fini are able to threaten Hippowdon with Scald while shrugging off its Earthquakes.(rp),(ac)Wwhile Greninja, Urshifu-RS, and Manaphy are able to force it out with their powerful Water-type attacks, but arent able struggle to switch in in fear of Earthquake.

Hippowdon serves a niche in being a special wall, being able to check common offensive Pokemon such as Mega Diancie, Magnezone, Zeraora, Tapu Koko, and non-z move Heatran. I’d change this to Tapu Koko, Mega Diancie, and Magnezone. Non Z-Move Heatran can still be a shaky matchup, especially if the Heatran user plays well. It does, however, face stark competition as a Ground-type from Gliscor, Gastrodon, and Landorus-T, as what they lack in raw bulk they make up for in defensive utility, offensive presence, and general lack of passivity make using Hippowdon difficult to justify over the plethora of other downright better Ground-types available. It's also quite a subpar Stealth Rock setter, as it loses to the most common removal options in the tier, notably Tapu Fini and Corviknight. Toxic lets it limit its passivity, being able to punish switch-ins such as Tangrowth, Slowbro, and Zapdos. It can also run Whirlwind, to let it phase out Pokemon such as Gliscor, Landorus-T, and Mega Scizor that try to take advantage of it. Add CM Clef here. Also, Whirlwind plays really nicely with Stealth Rock and Sand. However, picking one of these moves over the other isn't ideal, as losing Toxic makes Hippowdon completely unable to punish switch-ins from the likes of Slowbro, Tangrowth, and Landorus-T, but forgoing Whirlwind makes it complete setup fodder for the likes of Gliscor, Mega Scizor, and Clefable. Leftovers are the preferred item as the passive recovery it gives it helpful for letting Hippowdon check Tapu Koko and Magnezone. However, Heavy-Duty Boots can also be run to let Hippowdon ignore its overbearing weakness to entry hazards, especially Toxic Spikes and Spikes, and stay healthy. Corviknight, Mega Scizor, and Gliscor totally wall Hippowdon and bother it by defogging away its Stealth Rock or setting up on it, as such running teammates that can handle these threats such as Heatran, Tapu Koko, Victini, and Kyurem are key to having Hippowdon function. This is a really strange sentence because it implies that Hippowdon is meant for teams with offensive pressure, which is really odd. I would instead mention Pokemon like Heatran, Weavile, and Mega Latias, who actually fit on the really fat balances/semi-stalls that Hippowdon finds itself on.
