This post modeled after phoopes' RBY Grand Slam posts which is in turn modeled after Finchinator's Smogon Grand Slam posts. Hooray!

:gs/mewtwo: :gs/granbull: :gs/xatu: :gs/furret: :gs/croconaw:
Welcome to the inaugural GSC Grand Slam! The Ubers, UU, NU, PU, and ZU Opens will be established for the first time in the competition for the coveted title of the first ever GSC Grand Slam Champion!

The format consists of five separate tournaments: The GSC Ubers Open, The GSC UU Open, The GSC NU Open, The GSC PU Open, and the GSC ZU Open. Depending on your performance in each Open, you will be awarded points. The point system is the same as the one used in Smogon Tour, Smogon Classic and previous years of Smogon Grand Slam (see this for further explanation). When all the Opens have been finished, the eight players with the most points will qualify for playoffs. There, the battlers will duke it out in a single elimination best-of-five series until there is one GSC Grand Slam champion.

As voted on by the community, the UU open will unban Aerodactyl for the duration of the tournament - including playoffs!

Signups for each Open will be posted after the first round of the previous Open is completed. Here is the list of the three (five) Opens and the dates each signups will be posted:
If a tier shift happens to occur during a round, it will not be taken into account until the following round. Please also keep in mind that this tournament is entirely GSC and does not include metagames from future generations.

Replays are now required for all matches.

Be sure to join the GSC Discord if you have any questions or wish to ask a host about a decision. The spreadsheet will be run by vani, and I'll have a link to it in this post once it's ready.

The spreadsheet for this tournament can be seen here!

DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS THREAD WITH "IN", POST IN THE TOURNAMENT THREADS WHEN THEY GO UP TO JOIN THE TOUR!

This thread will eventually become the playoffs thread.

Good luck and have fun!

Playoffs Quarterfinals:

After ten weeks of competition between over 100 users I am pleased to announcement the best of the best. The top 8 users have emerged as the most well rounder GSC lower tier players and will now duke it out in a single elimination bracket. Before getting to our matchups I would like to thank our hosts kenny, Nineveh, Estarossa, Theia, and vani. Without these dedicated users we could not have put this tournament together.

Now our players:

1. vani - 25 points (86.36%)

vani blows the competitions with an outstanding 25 points and elite 86% win ratio. vani could have hung up his hat after the first two opens and still qualified first, but he went on to solidify his ranking by scoring points in every single tour - the only player to do so. The clear favorite to win, can anyone stand in vani's way?

2. Real FV13 - 16 points (80.00%)

Though Real FV13 started off the season slow, earning no points in the ZU and PU opens, he kicked into gear late in the season by making it to the finals in the NU open and outright winning the UU open. Real FV13 keeps improving as time goes on, lets see if he can put up a fight against his competition in ZU, PU, and Ubers!

3. MrSoup - 14 points (71.43%)

The up and coming NU prodigy MrSoup makes it into playoffs with only two points scoring placements. A win in the NU open and a respectable finals appearance in PU brought MrSoup here, but will the Bo5 format prove an issue in playoffs? Only time will tell.

4. Mr.378 - 13 points (68.75%)

The iron man of GSC made it here with a strong showing in the ZU open and picking up a few points across PU, NU and Ubers. Many would have expected a deeper run into the Ubers open from Mr.378, but a run in with BigFatMantis cut it short. Is it fate that Mr.378 tied in the standings with BFM? Will this week's showdown turn out differently?

5. BigFatMantis - 13 points (68.75%)

Old gen lower tiers connoisseur and GSC UU specialist BigFatMantis makes it into finals with strong showings in the UU and Ubers opens. He immediately faces a tough pairing against Mr.378, but winning this matchup could give him momentum all the way to finals. Any way this turns out BigFatMantis is sure to impress and entertain.

6. LpZ - 12 points (70.59%)

LpZ was the face of consistency this Grand Slam. Aside from a fluke round 1 exit in the NU open, LpZ made it to the quarterfinals in every other open. I think this consistency will be key to performing well in playoffs, I wouldn't be surprised to see LpZ make it all the way.

7. zben - 10 points (66.67%)

Lower tier enjoyer and GSC discord #matchmaking channel mainstay zben makes it into playoffs with solid performances in PU, NU, UU, and Ubers. Lets hope the extra experience from friendly games give zben an edge, he faces an uphill battle to make it through the competitive bracket.

8. pp's splash town - 9 points (64.29%)

pp's splash town scrapes into finals by picking up points in ZU, PU, NU, and UU. But don't let the 8th seed fool you, pp is here to scrap. With experience in all GSC lower tiers an 8th seed miracle run might be in the cards.

Mr.378 is given seeding preference over BigFatMantis due to making the deepest run in an open with the most entrants - Mr.378 appeared in the finals of the ZU open.

Pairings

1. vani vs 8. pp's splash town 11. DiannieRatson
2. Real FV13 vs 7. zben
3. MrSoup vs 6. LpZ
4. Mr.378 vs 5. BigFatMantis
All sets are best of five, defined as first to three wins. The higher seed will pick the first tier to be played (out of Ubers, UU+Aerodactyl, NU, PU, ZU) and the loser of each match will then pick which tier the next match will be played in. In the event of a tie, the match will be replayed in the same tier. Replays are mandatory.

Reminder that Aerodactyl is still unbanned in UU for playoffs!

This week's deadline is Sunday, June 25th at 11:59 PM GMT-4

Good luck to all competitors!

Unfortunately I won't be able to play as I'm currently doing field work and won't be home until mid August. Is it possible the 9th seed player could take my place? Sorry for the inconvenience but there's no way I'll be able to schedule and play these games.

Both the 9th and 10th seeds declined to participate in playoffs so the 11th seed, DiannieRatson, will be subbed in.

New matchup:
vani vs DiannieRatson

I want to say that this GSC Grand Slam Playoffs looks extremely promising.

But it's wonderful to see this level of commitment from both new and old faces. I think I'd like to give a small background explanation of each of these eight players to do them justice. I don't have time to do extensive research but fortunately I know them all by this point.

1.Vani

Vani at this point is basically a veteran in the GSC Community. Having already won on different occasions a few GSC Ubers tours, being high level and proficient in UU and even OU (which matters in my opinion), it's not a surprise that he managed to score the highest in the qualifying phaze. He is certainly deserving of his number 1 spot here for having gone so deep into two tournaments.

2. RealFv13

Of all the players in the pool RealFv 13 is a player I did not get a chance to interact with. I do, however, remember first seeing them sign up in GSC PL III, an infamous tour for the Wolverines RIP. If memory serves me well here, he was among those players in the top 2 or 3 for GSC UU. Given his consistent time playing in the past couple of GSC UU tournaments and the fact that he won the GSC UU + Aero qualifier of the grand slam, it does not appear to be a stroke of luck.

3. Mr.Soup

Another player I was not exactly familiar with but I sort of had on my radar from GSC PL III, his specialty being GSC NU. He has also been quite active in the GSC UU circle as of late. Unfortunately, I really have not been paying attention to NU at all for years.

4. Mr.378

I hope the newcomers don't get too intimidated because this man has more accolades than most of the players present put together. The iron man of ubers has been around a while, and unlike with many veterans, he does not get held back by holding on to his former views of a given meta. He not only participated in important GSC OU circuits but he also has been around for the longest in tiers such as UU and Ubers. He won the GSC Homefield Advantage tour, and he also holds the record for most wins in a single series of UUPL in GSC UU. You simply cannot sleep on Mr.378 because he's not only an excellent player, but he's one of the most well prepared for his opponents.

5. Big Fat Mantis

The host to one of the most beloved UU tournament circuits, the UUFPL, BFM is a very fine addition to the pool of GSC Grand Slam. He was not exactly one of the big names in GSC UU until he started to transition into it around the year of 2021 where he joined (and won) multiple tours like GSC UUBL. He's been around long enough to show that he's motivated and, though at first I had my doubts, his consistent high placing in GSC UU, UUBL and Ubers tournaments has dispelled all of that. He is easily one of the biggest representatives of the UU community and I look forward to see him perform against Mr.378 in a classic OLD vs NEW style bout.

(I forgot to mention lots of his tournament placings, like being the runner up in last year's GSC UU Cup, but despite his short career, there are perhaps more positive tournament records than I care to count.)

6. LpZ

Perhaps not known for some of the people that restrict themselves to playing GSC, but otherwise if you don't know LpZ, I'm not sure what your doing with your time on Smogon. LpZ is one of the biggest champions the server has to offer and he has proven to be at a high level since he won the Smogon UU Classic two years ago. My data not being updated probably does the biggest disservice to this player because he is perhaps one of the winning-est players in the Smogon circuits. His GSC UU is quite solid as long as he can stay motivated to play and not get lulled to sleep by a long drawn out game. (Yeah, biggest accolades of them all, but what did you expect if he constantly shows up in the finals of every RoA tour against Soulwind?)

7. Zben

Zben is certainly an interesting player, one I had a few occasions to run into on the GSC UU ladder before I had my huge meltdown. He won the GSC UU Cup with a very convincing team, and a few not so convincing ones. I think that if he's polished up the building style he can definitely find weakpoints in his opponent's defenses and rely on his high Fight IQ to outprep and out perform his opponents. (Please don't bring Flareon in UU, bro).

8. Diannie Ratson

A former Wii Fit Wolverine (PP's splash town) left and in came another former Wolverine in Diannie Ratson. Diannie is a very strong contender in the sub UU formats, managing to handle the pace of those high-octane aggressive metagames like GSC NU and PU. She's also experienced with RBY NU. Personally I believe the skills of a player really shows when they demonstrate an ability to use the same pokemon across generations and there are quite a lot of crossovers between the lower tiers of Gen1 and 2. I know that doesn't do sufficient justice to our player here but if anything, she probably would have scored into the top 10 if we didn't have so many top players already (3 of which have decided not to partake in the playoffs). I say don't count her out.

I'd do predictions but the truth is I haven't had the time to look at 60+ replays and see how each person performs. Instead of failing to fulfil a promise of giving 100% objective truths I decided it would be better to give a semi historical background that gives a bit of the flavor of all these players you see before you. I hope I got the point across.

I continue to lurk in the servers from time to time but don't expect me to do this coverage a second time. It just so happened that I knew all of the players for once.

There are some players that if you told me before a year ago would be some of the top performers in GSC lower tiers I wouldn't believe you. But this will definitely be fun, granted that people don't bring random-ass stuff. But it's a game in the end.

won in 4
pu ubers nu zu
it was a really fun tournament , i wish we can do this for all old gens and of course see you in the gsc slam next year.
It was a great opportunity to test aero in uu and i hope we can free it soon.
In nu , i think we have a lot of freedom in the building process , we should take more risk in the building and stop using generic core (i tried the triple normal spam in finals and i never used any xatu i think XDD). I know a lot dont like my rest talk set with roar or encore , my usage of tangela but most of the time i need it for certain menace.
For pu , furret is always the problem for most of players but i think hitmontop is the best mon in the tier , it is very hard to kill.
Zu is very fun , the nidos seem unexplored but they are really good.

The eternal gsc cord matchmaking channel stalker has finally come out of the shadows and put his practice to good use. Very nicely done Zben, big congrats on the win, and props to everyone else who made it to playoffs in Slam! I hope we can all look forward to more renditions in future years :)
