You're still priority 2, even if you died night 2. Night 1 kills are usually random unless the mafia has some sort of reason to believe (through IRC conversations etc.) that someone is a good target, whereas after that there's usually a clear idea of whom to target due to the village rallying, and so on.

Whether it's random or not doesn't matter. Night 1 death means you did not get to play at all, so it is the only exception to the priority rule. We're not going to stretch it anywhere beyond that.
