First RMT: Hail

I'm new to this RMT this, so don't judge me too harshly.

Team at Glance

Team Building

Since I like ice Pokemon, I decided to make a hail team. So obviously, Abomosnow comes to mind.

I didn't want Abomasnow to be my lead though, that's just too common and predictable. Because I have been successful with Aerodactyl in the past, I decided to make him my lead.

Since I am a fan of walling, tanking, and stalling, I decided that I needed a special wall, a physical wall, and a mixed wall. Abomasnow became my mixed wall with a subseed set. I chose Bronzong and Tentacruel as my two walls. Tentacruel can rapid spin and use toxic spikes along with the fact that he can take fire hits for my ice types making him perfect for the team. Bronzong was able to take rock and stell type hits fairly easily, so thats why I chose him.

Now I needed a sweeper. After difficult decision making, I decided on a scarfed Mamoswine as he was the most uncommon out of my choices.

With the combination of stealth rocks and toxic spikes, I decided that I needed a spin blocker. Considering I only had 2 pokemon taking advantage of the hail, my only choice was Froslass.

After lots of playtesting, I found that this wasn't a very good team at all. The main thing I found though was that Bronzong did nothing but take hits for the team (once he was out, he didn't do anything for the greater good, just a screen and a small amount of damage.) Thinking of pokemon that take advantage of the hail, I remembered Walrein. A stallrain would go great with my stall team, so I added him.

The removal of Bronzong ruined my synergy, but my team did extremely well. Someone even posted out battle on youtube! I couldn't think of a Pokemon that could fix the synergy without ruining what I have now. After on battle though, I got talking to someone about using UU and RU Pokemon in the OU tier. We discussed different strategies to do this, and when we were discussing one of my favorite Pokemon, Swoobat, I just had to add him. I made him a hax lead (attract, thunder wave, and supersonic.)

Swoobat took away my access to stealth rock, but he did add something interesting to the table. He completely shuts down the opponents lead, ruining whatever their preplanned strategy is causing us to go into a "play by ear battle." This did seem to help my team out, but not as much as I would have liked. I mostly keep him becuase he is a weak Pokemon successfully playing in OU, and that brings me so much more joy than Aerodactyl did.

Current needs: A Pokemon that can give me good synergy without ruining the roles I have now. Wish support.

Current Problems: I don't have good synergy. I struggle with steel types. Sun teams ruin me.

A closer look:

Swoobat@ Focus Sash
Ability: Simple
EVs: 252 Spd/252 Hp/4 Def
Timid (+Speed, -Atk)
Gender: Female
-Attract
-Super Sonic
-Thunder Wave
-Charge Beam

Swoobat does more than you would expect. Most pokemon on PO are males as its the default gender (and most of the trainers are boys,) this makes Attract a pretty reliable status move. What really makes me use it is how effective it is. Once a Pokemon is infatuated, it feels like a 60% chance to do nothing (I don't know the real value.) Combine this with Super Sonic and Thunder Wave, and you've got some major hax going on. Once the opponent is immobilized, Swoobat proceeds by spamming charge beam (and replenishing confusion.) With simple, I have a 70% chance to get +2 SpAtk from one charge beam. This allows Swoobat to take out the opponent. Sadly, it doesn't work out like that. Swoobat usually dies before he can spam at +6, but he does paralyze threats and ussualy takes a good chunk out of their health (making them an easy target for Mamoswine.)

Abomasnow @ Leftovers
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 Hp/ 176 Def/ 84 SpDef
Careful (+SpDef, -SpAtk)
-Leech Seed
-Protect
-Substitute
Focus Punch

Abomansnow surprised me. With the combination of substitute and protect, he can actually play the exact same game stallrein can. I've completely knocked Pokemon out with him by stalling with residual damage. Leech seed combined with hail and Toxic spikes can do some pretty amazing things. There are times when I wished I'd have chosen wood hammer or blizzard over focus punch, but simply the thread of those attacks causes a switch, allowing me to sub. Focus punch surprised the opponent, and its not hard to get it super effective (and OHKO unsuspecting sweepers.) Focus punch also allows Abomasnow to counter It also aAbomasnow is my perfect mixed wall, and a great staller.

Tentacruel @ Black Sludge
Ability: Rain Dish
EVs: 252 Hp/ 252 SpDef/ 4 Def
Calm (+SpDef, -Atk)
-Rapid Spin
-Toxic Spikes
-Scald
-Protect

Tentacruel, A Pokemon I wish I didn't have to use simply becuase its so Over-used. Sadly, its my only option for a special wall that can rapid spin, set up toxic spikes, and take fire type attacks, he just fits so well. Scald > Hydro pump becuase I can burn physical switch-ins, then again, it clashes with toxic spikes, so I may reconsider. Protect is for stalling and scouting (what its always used for.) Tentacruel is my fall back for my sweepers (if a sweeper fails, I can switch to Tentacruel to gain control.) I chose Rain Dish over liquid ooze to counter rain teams.

Walrein @ Leftovers
Ability: Ice body
EVs: 252 Hp/ 252 Def/ 4 Spd
Bold (+Def, -Atk)
-Toxic
-Substitute
-Protect
-Blizzard

Your average stallrein. He acts as my physical wall, and really does a great job of it. Toxic is used if toxic spikes aren't up (or if the opponent can avoid it.) Once the opponent is badly poisoned, I proceed to switch between protect and Substitute. If I get an opening, I blizzard. If blizzard would simply OHKO, I surprise them by using it (people seem to think I won't do it.)

Mamoswine @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Snow Cloak
Evs: 116 Hp/ 252 Atk/ 140 Spd
Adamant (+Atk, -SpAtk)
-Icicle Spear
-Super Power
-Stone Edge
-Earthquake

Attack is maxed-out for maximum power. He has enough speed EVs to out speed every unscarfed Pokemon in the metagame, the rest of his EVs are dumped into Hp. His moveset is the common one for scarfed mammoths, so I don' t think I need to explain it.

Froslass @ Leftovers
Ability: Snow Cloak
EVs: 252 Hp/ 252 Spd/ 4 Def
Timid (+Spd, -Atk)
-Substitute
-Spikes
-Blizzard
-Destiny Bond

This Pokemon is amazing. I've swept an entire team by using a combination of blizzard and sub! For the most part though, Froslass is my spin blocker. She has blinding speed, so it isn't hard to force a switch, sub, than set up at least 1 layer of spikes. Destiny Bond works wonders as my opponents can never predict it (odd.) I'll usually spam substitute to create the illusion that I don't have it, then when I drop below 25% health, use it. Blizzard is used if all three layers of spikes are up and I'm hiding behind a sub. She will always take down at least one pokemon, but usually its multiple along with a layer of spikes.

This is an extremely interesting team. I have never seen Hail up in OU so you have the surprise factor on your side. However, PLEASE get rid of Swoobat. It is not viable at all for OU because of it's pathetic defenses and with all the Scarfers and Priority in OU, Swoobat won't be able to handle it. If you want hax, you could always use Jirachi or Togekiss. If you would like a set for either, just check onsite or you can PM me.
Also, you seem to lack a way around Terrakion, Tyranitar, and Latios, so I would suggest Choice Band Scizor. You can use it in place of Walrein or Tentacruel. Here's the set:

Scizor-Technician
252 HP/252 Att./4 Speed OR 4 HP/252 Att./252 Speed
Item: Choice Band Nature: Adamant
Bullet Punch
Pursuit/Quick Attack
U-Turn
Superpower

Alternatively, you could run a Fire Water Grass core and add Choice Scarf Chandelure in place of Swoobat or Walrein. I highly recommend this because it gives you a way to get rid of the Fire types this team so openly despises.

Chandelure-Flash Fire
4 HP/252 Sp. Att./252 Speed
Item: Choice Scarf Nature: Modest
Overheat/Fire Blast
Shadow Ball
Energy Ball
Hidden Power Fighting

You could run both sets or just one. I really hope I helped! Good luck on your team!

One of the best teams of this entire round is a hail team. Made by Delko. Look it up.

A better EV spread for Scizor is 248 HP/252 Atk/8 Spe, which minimizes stealth rock damage since you have to switch a lot.

Get rid of Swoobat. That's the most joke set I've ever seen. Your team is murdered by basically any fighting type. I'd suggest standard Reuniclus over Swoobat.

like said above I suggest you to use scizor or kirachi over swoobat, also your team lacks in attack, just mamoswine is capable of doing seriuos damages, try a sweeper set for abomasnow or definitevely use both scizor and chandelure. furthermore scarf terrakion easily 6-0 you, i suggest to try skarmory or jirachi over tentacruel or even walrein

I've played a hail team before as well, although I played it a bit differently. Though early on I made the same mistake your making. Your thinking just like I did, "well I'm making a hail team so I better load my team with ice types right?" WRONG. Ice is one of the worst defensive typings in the game, and having more than 3 on your team is just asking to be swept. I would recommend getting rid of either walrein, frosslass or both, and replacing it with a bigger offensive threat that can take advantage of 100% accurate blizzard, because right now the only real offensive threat you have is Mamoswine. One mon that I would reccomend is this
Kyurem@Choice Scarf
Nature: Modest
EVs:252Spatk/152Spe/100hp
Moves:
-Blizzard
-Draco Meteor
-Dragon Pulse
-Focus Blast

I know I said to avoid Ice types, but this guy is the biggest powerhouse and hail team can have. But if you add him, you definitely have to get rid of at least one of your ice types. One typing that I've found works well on ice teams are water types because they usually have access to blizzard, and they resist fire. I used Kingdra on my hail team and it worked nicely.

I'll look into Chandelure and Scizor (I despise Scizor, but if its not a Swords dance set, I guess it's OK.)

I'm planning on keeping Swoobat, terrible weak or not. For me, using useless pokemon in OU makes the game 1000X more fun. I successfully pulled it off on Wi-Fi, but the people here on smogon make it difficult to do. If you have a better set for Swoobat, tell me, but for now, he seems to be doing pretty well.

Byrne said:
One of the best teams of this entire round is a hail team. Made by Delko. Look it up.

A better EV spread for Scizor is 248 HP/252 Atk/8 Spe, which minimizes stealth rock damage since you have to switch a lot.

Get rid of Swoobat. That's the most joke set I've ever seen. Your team is murdered by basically any fighting type. I'd suggest standard Reuniclus over Swoobat.
I looked up delko's team. I want to try to be as original as possible though...

I'm not planning on using a fire type over Scizor.

I'm keeping Swoobat for reasons said earlier. Swoobat may look like a joke, but he actually works. He forces tons of switches, racking up damage. Combined with thunder wave, I can usually paralyze 2-3 Pokemon before he's knocked out, greatly supporting my team. If you have a better set for swoobat, tell me.

Slypig said:
like said above I suggest you to use scizor or kirachi over swoobat, also your team lacks in attack, just mamoswine is capable of doing seriuos damages, try a sweeper set for abomasnow or definitevely use both scizor and chandelure. furthermore scarf terrakion easily 6-0 you, i suggest to try skarmory or jirachi over tentacruel or even walrein
My teams lacks attack becuase its a stall team. People seem to say terrakion is my weakness, but I've dealt with him pretty easily in the past. I only need to pull off one blizzard to knock him dead. I'll look into skarmory.

I wasn't planning on using tons of ice types, it just ended up that way due to the roles I wanted. I'll look into Kindra and Kyureme.

P.S.
I know swoobat isn't that great, but I am still going to keep him simply becuase I like him.

If you are keeping Swoobat, I suggest ditching Supersonic for Flatter or Swagger. Supersonic has terrible accuracy and it has access to both Flatter and Swagger, so you should stick to them for your Confusion needs. Other than that, I think you've got balls for using Swoobat and I wish you the best of luck!

Hi, when I look at this team, the first thing I noticed was the alarming lack of sun and Fighting-type checks. Volcarona, Lucario, Breloom, and to a lesser extent, Ninetales, can all have their way with this team. Swoobat does not "shut down the opposing lead". A good chunk of Pokemon in the metagame are either genderless or female, so Attract isn't exactly reliable. Thunder Wave clashes with Toxic Spikes, as you never know when you'll accidentally paralyze something, like Conkeldurr, that you needed Toxiced. Since you're looking for a Wishpasser, I would like to suggest a gimmicky, yet surprisingly effective Poke instead of Swoobat: Wishmence. This guy can come in, Intimidate, and neuter an opponent, and proceed to either Wish, or fire off a Draco Meteor or Flamethrower to smack annoying Pokemon such as Lucario and Breloom, or even phaze with Dragon Tail to rack up Spikes damage. Timid Nature 76 Speed EVs, 180 Defense EVs gives you 280 Speed and 241 Defense. Bold Nature 80 Defense EVs, 176 Speed EVs gives you 280 Speed and 237 Defense, so go with the first spread. You need that 280 Speed to outspeed Adamant Lucario.

Now, Salamence does fine against fighting types, but it still doesn't stand a chance against the #1 threat to your team, Volcarona, simply because after a couple Quiver Dances, even Draco Meteor is just gonna bounce off. Your Mamoswine is currently not even using its best asset, Ice Shard, and is only compounding your problem taking Fire moves. It is hence the most replaceable member of your team. Due to the stall-ish nature of your team, Stealth Rock is a must! In fact, there really is no reason to not use Stealth Rock, ever, due to the omnipresence of Dragonite and Volcarona. You currently have nobody to take Dragon-type attacks either, so Specially Defensive Heatran seems like the perfect fit. It can get in against many sun threats and either threaten them with Lava Plume, or in the case of Volcarona, set up Stealth Rock and Roar it out, effectively dealing 50% damage. Protect vs Toxic is based on your preference, the former can build up Toxic Spikes/ Hail damage, while the latter can allow Heatran to join in on the status spree.

Of course, the removal of Mamoswine leaves you more prone to DD Dragons, especially Dragonite. But Heatran just plain brings to much to the table to not warrant a spot over Mamoswine, Stealth Rock, Dragon resist, Fire immunity. While that Abomasnow set does have potential, sadly, it has to be the one to go, as there are no other ways to fix this without completely destroying your team synergy. Perhaps keep that set in mind for a future team. I suggest instead using a Choice Band Abomasnow. This guy hits surprisingly hard, and makes Sand and Rain teams duck for cover between Wood Hammer and Ice Fang. Ice Shard is always helpful for picking off DD Dragons, as well as a Chlorophyll sweeper should Heatran be picked off by Dugtrio. If you're lucky, you could even smack Heatran or Ninetales on the switch-in with Earthquake, both whom would otherwise have caused immense trouble. While Choice Band doesn't seem to take advantage of the Hail and Toxic Spikes as much, it certainly forces many more switches, which will rack up Stealth Rock and Spikes damage. Both ways, your opponent will get worn down.

GL
Wishmence>Swoobat
pros: helps with Fighting-types, such as Lucario and Breloom, provides Wish support, provides phazing in Dragon Tail
cons: none, Swoobat is just... not viable in OU

Specially Defensive Heatran>Choice Scarf Mamoswine
pros: helps take on sun teams, especially Volcarona, brings Stealth Rock, another phazer to rack up hazards damage, Dragon resist
cons: lose out on STAB Earthquake, which is not nearly as valuable as what Heatran brings to the table

Choice Band Abomasnow>SubPunch Abomasnow
pros: shit on Sand/ Rain with Wood Hammer+Ice Punch(for Landorus), take out DD Dragons with Ice Shard, hit Heatran/ Ninetales switch-ins with Earthquake
cons: lose out on Leech Seed, lose a staller, although Walrein can definately handle things itself.

You post is very helpful. I am definitely gonna switch out Mamoswine for Heatran! I'll test out banded Abomansow and see which one I like better. Sorry, but I am not going to take out swoobat, useless/outclassed or not.

@yaysnivy34

Thanks! I didn't know swoobat could learn swagger or flatter.

I would think about investing in a rock resist. Conkeldurr seems like a good bet, patching up your terrakion and rock weakness and also sending heatran packing, who gives your team a beating.

You are also very weak to cm reuniclus, I would run an endeavour sash swine to overcome this, it also gives you a fallback for things like volcarona or dd scrafty if they get out of control.

get rid of swoobat, theres not much point in trying to get your team rated to be better competitively when you are using a swoobat just because it makes the game 1000x more fun but is useless. Sure use it for fun but dont post an rmt and expect people to take you seriously when you refuse to replace him for something to patch up your teams weaknesses.

I'll test out your advice.

I don't expect people to take Swoobat seriously. I want my team to be as good as it can with Swoobat, so that's why I need the community. It's much better to have fun than to win, and if Swoobat accomplishes that, he is already doing enough.

Hi there, sweet looking team. I've played hail stall for a long time ( think i posted an article, take a look if u like). The swoobat is alright with me, but my main problem with this team is a lack of purpose. It seems to be more geared at stalling with your tentacruel, abomasnow and walrein which leads me to wonder once you got your entries set up, what role does froslass actually play? A fragile spinblocker is a bad one especially pretty much all pokes with rapid spin will carry something that can kill froslass. And I can absolutely see your point that froslass is capable of sweeping an entire team, but this brings me to whether or not you need blizzard for it.

I can only see the ice type moves and edgequake (maybe scald) being threatening in this team so unless you would like to go for stall, I would recommend some more pokes with more caliber in your team.

A revenge killer that does very well in hail would be Raikou.

Raikou @ Choice Scarf
Rash Nature
Ability: Pressure
4HP/ 252 SpAtk/ 252 Spd

- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Weatherball
- HP Fire

With hail on, you'll be running pretty much boltbeam with 100 bp ice weatherball. Raikou does have to run rash because of event move Weatherball, but the scarf makes up for it. With HP Fire, even steel types would have problem coping with it but this set does require some prediction and long term planning as you don't really wanna be stuck on any immune moves. Last but not least, I am unfortunately not sure how well this will run on an offensive team as Raikou isn't fast enough to outspeed Latios and is out speeded by 339 scarfed or Deoxy-S, but in a stall team, a lot of pokes like your Tentacruel can take a Draco Meteor from Latios on a switch and since it can't use Psychic anymore, you can take the next turn to do whatever is needed.

If you do need a spinblocker, I would suggest Eviolite Dusclops which can easily tank a lot of threats and with skill swap, it can cause major annoyance in the opponents team like your swoobat, eliminating any guts boost by removing the ability itself.

Sorry for the long paragraphs but I think you seriously need something to address your problem with steel types. On a stall team, you would want something such as a bulky Zapdos that can deliver a heatwave but also take hits and on an offensive team, pretty much any sweeper can handle it. Hariyama for instance would be able to deliver a (STAB + Life Orb + 1.3x from Sheer Force) Close Combat in there face. But overall, most OU steel type threats can't deliver strong Atks except Metagross, Lucario and Jirachi so I think a special wall like Tentacruel has no trouble taking hits such as surf from Empoleon.

Hopefully that helped and goodluck to your team.

Thanks, I'll add him on my test list. I don't think I am gonna replace Froslass though, she does so much for me. I'm trying to replace Mamoswine as he can't OHKO anything unless the attack is super effective.

UPDATE:

I've tested choice band Abamasnow and the subpunch/seed set helped me so much more.
Heatran ended up like Bronzong, I might try a more offensive set.
I am currently testing skarmory, but the lack of fire resistance isn't very appealing.

Hmm... it doesn't appear you really know what direction to take with your team. You insist on using Swoobat even though Sigilyph is a superior Flying+Fighting type, and even Sigilyph has difficulty finding a niche in the metagame, so I'm not sure if you're trying to make a competitive team or a theme team. Heatran is as important to a Hail team as Abomasnow, if not more important. That Fire immunity is not optional for any successful Hail team. However, to get the most mileage out of Heatran, you really do need a Wishpasser, as Hail cancels out your Leftovers recovery, and if you opt for a more Offensive set, Heatran will bite the dust pretty quickly. However, since you're not even willing to give something a try over Swoobat, it is unfortunately impossible to add a Wishpasser without destroying team synergy completely. If I were you, I would ditch Swoobat and make life much easier, and use Swoobat in NU, where it could potentially pose a legitimate threat. But if you're adamant about using Swoobat, then there really is nothing anyone can do to help.

People fail to understand this. I don't care how weak Swoobat is, he is one of my favorite Pokemon. I like the OU tier, but I don't like how everyone is so forceful about having to using the best pokemon for a position, as if its power is the only thing that matters. I play on smogon to have fun, and if using Swoobat in OU is fun, he is a viable pokemon, no matter how pathetic he is. Yes, winning is fun, but what fun is winning with pokemon you don't like?

You say no one can help me if I refuse to trade out swoobat, if that is so, then I do not need this RMT anymore. I posted it to get the best team possible with swoobat, and if my team is perfect besides Swoobat, than I am done here.

I don't see how heatran is a must for hail, though that is probably a noob thing to say. I tested him out, and he really didn't do much for me (Swoobat helped me out more.) I am going to test out an offensive set as I feel that might work better (switch into a fire attack, than sweep.) I don't feel fire immunity is necessary though as I have tentacrual. I think a steel type would work better on my team as I struggle with steel more than fire. Considering heatran does both, I probably just need to find the right move set for him.

I am trying to make a competitive theme team (If a theme team is a team that uses favorites rather than power houses.) I really don't know where to take my team as there are so many different Pokemon on my team that work wonders, but they don't "go" together. I probably just need to drop someone and settle on something.

P.S.

Sorry for my long nooby post. I know that using Swoobat is a bad idea competitively, you don't need to teach me that. My "playstyle" is using weak pokemon in OU, obviously OU pokemon will do a better job, but its more enjoyable the other way. I'm trying to get to the point where I can build a team of all NU/UU pokemon and succeed in OU, but I doubt that will ever happen. Just remember, my goal is to make this team as perfect as it can be WITH Swoobat, so if the only thing that you see wrong with my team is Swoobat, than your not helping. For any people in the future trying to tell me to give up on her, don't bother.

Sorry for getting defensive.

i agree on this, i hate it when people lol at me when they see my milotic, swellow and serperior only to get beaten either by surprise or noobiness. they'll say "vappy is better than milo" or "swellow suckz lolz. y datz?". i jz answer, i like them..i just need to put a team around them. and what do we see right now? countless volt-turn or dd dragons.. that's the problem in OU, people need to have fun on their favorite pokes (although it's also fun beating others lol).

in that sense though, i see in you swoobat though that attact+super sonic is an overkill..plus, looking at his movesets, he has no real use for simple so you can replace it with unaware. then to differentiate him with quagsire, you can be creative like be a dual screen support or use a toment set.

that said, you can use an aromatherapy or wishpass support from blissey to replace tentacruel as swoobat + hail offense can definitely use this.

that's all..i hope this helps. ^^

I like your way to battle with your favorites also if they are weak, i'm going to use my brave blaziken of sapphire in a trick room team too and I know what you feel

I'll test out Blissey, but removing Tentacruel means no toxic spikes and rapid spin, both of which help me stall tremendously.

Simple on Swoobat is for a +2 charge beam, but I doubt that its worth being put into DW OU (shadow tag Chandelure wrecks me.) I test out different support moves (torment looks exciting.) The overkill of attract + confusion is necessary, swoobat has no bulk, so he needs to completely shut down the opponents Pokemon in order to survive (and he does exactly that.)

P.S.

The problem with OU is that it makes people think power is everything. People don't realize that if you use your (weak) favorite Pokemon, that it takes X2 the skill to win, resulting in more satisfying victories (what fun is sweeping a whole team 6/0?) It also has more satisfying loses as you used a weak Pokemon, giving you an excuse (some people need one.)
