Draft Excadrill

[overview]
**Draft order**: Round 2 onwards

**Price range**: 14-15 points

**Overview**: With an excellent typing and base 135 attack, Excadrill is an excellent Pokemon that can serve both offensive and defensive roles on any draft. With Swords Dance and access to Tera, Excadrill is a scary sweeper in sand thanks to its ability Sand Rush. Excadrill also provides utility in the form of both Stealth Rock and Rapid Spin. However, Excadrill is held back by its bulk, which is mediocre when uninvested, and weaknesses to common types in Water, Ground and Fighting.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Setup sweeper**: Excadrill can use Swords Dance and strong STAB moves to sweep through opposing teams. It can accomplish this either in sand or outside of sand by using Rapid Spin to get a Speed boost.

**Utility**: Excadrill is an excellent spinner and can also set Stealth Rock to support its teammates. With its typing, Excadrill is also able to switch into Fairy-types and threaten them out. It also provides a valuable Electric immunity, most notably blocking momentum via Volt Switch.

**Cleaner**: Excadrill can help revenge a lot of faster attackers in sand. Outside of sand, Excadrill can utilize a Choice Scarf for the same purpose.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB moves**: Earthquake, Iron Head, High Horsepower

**Setup moves**: Swords Dance, Iron Defense

**Utility moves**: Stealth Rock, Rapid Spin, Substitute

**Coverage**: Rock Slide, Poison Jab, X-Scissor, Tera Blast, Shadow Claw, Rock Blast, Throat Chop, Aerial Ace

Niche Moves
========
**Brick Break**: Excadrill can use Brick Break to remove dual screens.

**Fling**: Excadrill can hold a Big Nugget to have a 130 Base Power Dark-type move to hit bulky Psychic- and Ghost-types.

**Bulldoze and Rock Tomb**: Excadrill can use Bulldoze and Rock Tomb on more defensive sets to slow down the opposing team.

**Endure**: Endure can be used in conjunction with Custap Berry in niche situations to give Excadrill a chance to KO the opposing Pokemon.

Common Items
========
**Leftovers**: Leftovers provides consistent recovery to utility sets and extends Excadrill's longevity.

**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf allows Excadrill to revenge kill faster Pokemon or slower ones at +1 Speed. Choice Scarf is usually run if sand has a bad matchup and Speed control is needed. Mold Breaker is usually the preferred ability while running a Choice Scarf, as it allows Excadrill to hit Pokemon with Levitate with Earthquake.

**Life Orb**: Life Orb is the preferred item used to boost Excadrill's damage output, as Excadrill primarily relies on its STAB moves to dish out damage and also likes switching up its moves.

**Resistance Berry**: A resistance Berry can be used to live a super effective hit once, helping with setting up.

Niche Items
========
**Air Balloon**: Air Balloon can be used to remove Excadrill's weakness to Ground and give it a free turn to set up. It also prevents Excadrill from taking any damage from Spikes.

**Physical Attack-boosting items**: Excadrill can use items like Expert Belt, Soft Sand, and Metal Coat to boost the damage to its attacks. It can also hold Choice Band to maximize its damage output in certain matchups.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Excadrill can use Heavy-Duty Boots to not take damage from Spikes, allowing it to use Rapid Spin more easily.

**Focus Sash**: Focus Sash is used on an entry hazard lead set to ensure Excadrill is able to set Stealth Rock. It can also help Excadrill serve as an anti-hazard lead with Rapid Spin.

**Assault Vest**: Assault Vest patches up Excadrill’s mediocre Special Defense, allowing it to switch in repeatedly into resisted special attacks. This does make Excadrill weak to Spikes on switch in and also lacks the consistent recovery of Leftovers, cutting into its longevity.

**Clear Amulet**: Clear Amulet can be used in niche scenarios to prevent Pokemon with Intimidate from dropping Excadrill's Attack.

**Mental Herb**: Mental Herb prevents Excadrill from being susceptible to Encore or Taunt when using Swords Dance.

Tera
========
While it can work on a team without Tera, Excadrill should be drafted with the intention of making it a Tera Captain. Thus, a sand setter should also be drafted to enable Excadrill to make the most of its offensive profile. It should not be the Tera Captain if the team does not have a sand setter. Tera options like Tera Ghost and Flying get rid of its weakness to Fighting and Ground and allow it an easier time setting up. Excadrill can also make use of Tera Electric to hit Skarmory and Corviknight, Tera Water to hit Landorus-T and Gliscor, and Tera Grass to hit bulky Water-types super effectively. It can also use Tera Steel or Ground to boost one of its STAB moves.

Draft Strategy
========
Excadrill pairs well with fast, strong round 1 picks that are not reliant on Tera, enabling Excadrill to be the Tera Captain. It provides the important Steel and Ground typings to a draft, as well as a strong entry hazard removal option. It is strongly recommended to draft a sand setter with Excadrill to maximize its offensive profile; however, it can function on teams without sand as well.

**Sand setter**: Excadrill appreciates a sand setter on the team. Tyranitar is the preferred partner, as it is less passive than Hippowdon, has the important Dark typing, access to Knock Off, and excellent coverage. Hippowdon, on the other hand, provides a second bulky Ground-type, enabling Excadrill to focus on offense. Hippowdon also has reliable recovery, making it easier to set sand multiple times if needed.

**Strong special attackers**: Excadrill appreciates a special wallbreaker or setup sweeper on the team to help with wallbreaking the opposing team. Latios and Tornadus-T are excellent partners, as they are strong, fast, resist Fighting-type attacks, are immune to Ground-type attacks, and have methods of recovery that are not hindered by sand.

**Bulky Fairy-types**: Fairy-types like Scream Tail make for excellent teammates, as they resist Fighting and are able to deal with Dragon-types defensively, freeing up Excadrill offensively.

**Pivots**: As neither Excadrill nor the sand setter can pivot, Excadrill appreciates Pokemon that can pivot like Zapdos, Rotom-W, and Uxie, allowing it to make the most of the remaining sand turns.

**Ground resistances and immunities**: Excadrill appreciates having teammates that either resist or are immune to Ground-type attacks like Zapdos, Rotom-W, and Zarude.

Checks and Counters
========
**Bulky Flying-types**: Bulky Flying-types like Corviknight, Skarmory, and Zapdos are immune to Earthquake and resist Iron Head and have reliable recovery to consistently switch in to Excadrill. Landorus-T and Gliscor are also able to switch into Excadrill and soft check it. However, all these Pokemon are vulnerable to the appropriate Tera coverage or Rock Slide.

**Bulky Water- and Ground-types**: Bulky Water-types like Slowbro and Swampert and Ground-types like Ting-Lu and Donphan are able to switch in Excadrill and threaten it with super effective moves. However, they must be careful of +2 Tera Blast Grass. Excadrill can also switch into partners like Latios or Zapdos to deal with them.

**Priority attacks and faster Pokemon**: Excadrill is weak to priority attacks like Jet Punch, Mach Punch, and Vacuum Wave. Outside of sand, it is also vulnerable to faster Pokemon like Ogerpon-W, both Urshifu formes, and Krookodile.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Excadrill can use Heavy-Duty Boots to not take damage from hazards to be able to spin easier. (since u heal off rocks damage with lefties i would put this as niche as its only really useful into spikes)

Niche Items
========
**Air Balloon**: Air Balloon can be used to remove Excadrill's weakness to Ground and give it a free turn to set up.

**Focus Sash**: Focus Sash is used on the hazard lead set to ensure Excadrill is able to set Stealth Rocks.

While it can work on a team without Tera, Excadrill should be drafted with the intention of making it a Tera Captain. Excadrill can also make use of Tera Electric to hit Skarmory and Corviknight and Tera Water to hit Landorus-T and Gliscor super effectively. It can also use Tera Steel or Ground to boost its STABs.

Draft Strategy
========
Excadrill pairs well with fast, strong R1(round 1) picks like Latios, Iron Valiant or Darkrai. Ideally, it should be paired with a Tera banned Pokemon so it can be the designated Tera captain (would reword this to just a round 1 pick not reliant on tera). It provides the important Steel and Ground typings to a draft, as well as a strong hazard removal option. While not necessary, Excadrill appreciates having a sand setter on the team to enable its Sand Rush sets. (would say it is strongly encouraged to draft a sand setter with drill, but it could function without sand)

**Sand Setter**: Excadrill appreciates a sand setter on the team. Tyranitar is the preferred partner as it is less passive than Hippowdon, has the important Dark typing, access to Knock Off and excellent coverage.

**Strong special attackers**: Excadrill appreciates a special wallbreaker or setup sweeper on the team to help with breaking the opposing team. Latios and Thundurus are excellent partners as they are strong, fast and resists Fighting type attacks and are immune to Ground type attacks.

**Bulky Fairy types**: Fairy types like Clefable (i think scream tail is a better example for this gen) and Primarina make for excellent teammates as they resist Fighting types and are able to deal with Dragon types to free up Excadrill offensively.

**Pivots**: As neither Excadrill nor the sand setter can pivot, Excadrill appreciates Pokemon that can pivot like Zapdos, Rotom-W and Mesprit (uxie) to bring in Excadrill and allow it to make the most of the remaining sand turns.

Outside of sand, it is also vulnerable to faster Pokemon like Ogerpon-W, Urshifu and Krookodile.

However, Excadrill is held back by its bulk, which is mediocre when uninvested and weaknesses to common typings in Water, Ground and Fighting. You should briefly mention its strong synergy with sand in the beginning since its important factor on why it can be such a threat in building and in the game.

**Cleaner**: Excadrill can help revenge a lot of faster attackers in sand. Outside of sand, Excadrill can utilize a Choice Scarf for the same purpose.
Would be good to also explain a reason to bring Choice Scarf over using sand, ie Sand doesnt matchup in one game but you need some form of speed, either here or in the Choice Scarf section

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB moves**: Earthquake, Iron Head, High Horsepower

**Setup moves**: Swords Dance, Iron Defense

**Utility moves**: Stealth Rock, Rapid Spin, Substitute

**Coverage**: Rock Slide, Poison Jab, X-Scissor, Tera Blast, Shadow Claw Can add Rock Blast, Throat Chop, and Aerial Ace

Niche Moves
========
**Brick Break**: Excadrill can use Brick Break to break screens.

**Fling**: Excadrill can hold a Big Nugget to have a base 130 Dark type move to hit bulky Psychic and Ghost types.

Can add Bulldoze and Rock Tomb under niche for their speed control, and Steel Beam for the lead sets, and Endure for Custap Berry shenanigans

Common Items
========
**Leftovers**: Leftovers provides consistent recovery to utility sets and extends Excadrill's longevity.

**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf allows Excadrill to revenge kill faster Pokemon or slower ones at +1 Speed. Mold Breaker is usually run with Choice Scarf as it allows Excadrill to hit Pokemon with Levitate with Earthquake.

**Physical Attack-boosting items**: Excadrill can use items like Expert Belt and Life Orb to boost the damage to its attacks. It can also use Soft Sand or Metal Coat to boost the damage of its STABs. Finally, it can hold Choice Band to maximize its damage output. Feel like this section could use more work. I feel that the main item that should be here is Life Orb given its more potent attack boost it gives. You can put the rest of the attack boosting items under niche, can also remove Choice Band, and potentially put it under niche as well

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Excadrill can use Heavy-Duty Boots to not take damage from hazards to be able to spin easier. Mention Spikes when mentioning hazards, given their prevalence and Excadrill being weak to them being the reason why its running boots

Niche Items
========
**Air Balloon**: Air Balloon can be used to remove Excadrill's weakness to Ground and give it a free turn to set up You can also mention its immune to Spikes and can Rapid Spin them away or it also just attack

**Focus Sash**: Focus Sash is used on the hazard lead set to ensure Excadrill is able to set Stealth Rocks. Add that it can serve as a anti-hazard lead with Rapid Spin and with suicidal option with Steel Beam

**Assault Vest**: Assault Vest patches up Excadrill’s mediocre Special Defense, allowing it to switch in repeatedly into resisted special attacks. Note that it does become more vulnerable to Spikes and lacks longevity so do mention its drawback

**Clear Amulet**: Clear Amulet can be used in niche scenarios to prevent Pokemon with Intimidate dropping Excadrill's Attack.

Other niche items to mention are the resist berries and Custap Berry

Tera
========
While it can work on a team without Tera, Excadrill should be drafted with the intention of making it a Tera Captain. I think it should be emphasized that if you have access to sand that Excadrill can become a good Tera user, because without sand it can't make good use of Tera. Tera allows Excadrill to get coverage for Pokemon it normally cannot hit like Corviknight and Skarmory. Tera options like Ghost and Flying get rid of its weakness to Fighting and Ground types and allows it an easier time to set up. Excadrill can also make use of Tera Electric to hit Skarmory and Corviknight and Tera Water to hit Landorus-T and Gliscor super effectively. It can also use Tera Steel or Ground to boost its STABs. Try adding more niche Tera options, like Tera Grass to allow it to beat Water-types that would ordinarily check it as well as giving it a Ground resistance.

Draft Strategy
========
Excadrill pairs well with fast, strong R1 picks like Latios, Iron Valiant or Darkrai. Ideally, it should be paired with a Tera banned Pokemon so it can be the designated Tera captain. It provides the important Steel and Ground typings to a draft, as well as a strong hazard removal option. While not necessary, Excadrill appreciates having a sand setter on the team to enable its Sand Rush sets.

**Sand Setter**: Excadrill appreciates a sand setter on the team. Tyranitar is the preferred partner as it is less passive than Hippowdon, has the important Dark typing, access to Knock Off and excellent coverage. While its true that Tyranitar is more ideal as a partner to Excadrill, its best to explore Hippowdon a little in case someone does decide to draft it. Give a brief explaination on how these two differ in their roles.

**Strong special attackers**: Excadrill appreciates a special wallbreaker or setup sweeper on the team to help with breaking the opposing team. Latios and Thundurus are excellent partners as they are strong, fast and resists Fighting type attacks and are immune to Ground type attacks. I feel you can provide better examples for good special attacking partners for Excadriill like Tornadus-T and Zapdos in addition to the ones mentioned.

**Bulky Fairy types**: Fairy types like Clefable and Primarina make for excellent teammates as they resist Fighting types and are able to deal with Dragon types to free up Excadrill offensively.

**Pivots**: As neither Excadrill nor the sand setter can pivot, Excadrill appreciates Pokemon that can pivot like Zapdos, Rotom-W and Mesprit to bring in Excadrill and allow it to make the most of the remaining sand turns.

Could add a section to having ground immunities or resistances since those are common attacks that drill is commonly weak to

Checks and Counters
========
**Bulky Flying types**: Bulky Flying types like Corviknight, Skarmory and Zapdos are immune to Earthquake and resist Iron Head and have reliable recovery to consistently switch in to Excadrill. Landorus-T and Gliscor are also able to switch into Excadrill and soft check it. However, all these Pokemon are vulnerable to the appropriate Tera coverage. Feel like you can mention its Rock-type coverage here given how most bulky Flying-types are weak to it in addition to being able to have extra coverage with Tera as you mentioned in the end

**Bulky Water types**: Bulky Water types like Slowbro and Swampert are able to switch in Excadrill and threaten it with Water type moves. However, they must be careful of +2 Tera Grass Tera Blast. Add in as well its partners that it can switch into to capitalize on bulky waters since you might not have Tera Grass for something else. Could also include Bulky Ground types in this section given their overlap in both checking and having super-effective coverage versus drill.

**Strong priority attacks and faster Pokemon**: Excadrill is weak to strong priority attacks like Jet Punch, Mach Punch and Vacuum Wave. Outside of sand, it is also vulnerable to faster Pokemon like Ogerpon-W, Urshifu and Krookodile.

Edited. I kept AV under niche items for now but I can take it out if you feel strongly about it.

Adding onto Hacker's QC. Pretty decent write up. I feel that you can flesh out more in some parts but overall good stuff.
Edited but had some comments / questions.
  • Is "Excadrill is a scary sweeper in sand" not enough for overview? I mentioned Sand Rush to be clearer but let me know if that's not enough.
  • I don't think Steel Beam is viable at all, even on lead sets. It works on Tread because it has 72 SpA but Excadrill's SpA is only 50.
  • I forgot resist berries so good catch. Kept them under common items instead of niche though, but I can change it if you feel strongly about it.
  • I added why Excadrill is only a good choice for Tera captain in sand, but towards the end. Hope that's okay.
Will move it for GP review once you let me know you are happy with the edits. Thanks!

    It was fine, just wanted to be sure that it was important to mention why Excadrill can an excellent offensive Pokemon. Though that's how I read at first, so you could disregard it.
  • I don't think Steel Beam is viable at all, even on lead sets. It works on Tread because it has 72 SpA but Excadrill's SpA is only 50.
    Fair enough. It was moreso for getting Drill off the field and into whatever comes in afterwards, especially if it can prevent hazard removal. But yeah you can not mention it if you believe it to not be viable.
  • I forgot resist berries so good catch. Kept them under common items instead of niche though, but I can change it if you feel strongly about it.
    Putting them under common is fine. Me mention them was me trying to add in more suggestions for potential items it can run.
  • I added why Excadrill is only a good choice for Tera captain in sand, but towards the end. Hope that's okay.
    That's good. Just had to be sure that it didn't leave any implications that it would be viable with Tera even without sand, but thats just me.
Will move it for GP review once you let me know you are happy with the edits. Thanks!
No problem! Glad to help out!

**Draft order**: Round 2-3 onwards just consistency w/ other analyses

**Setup sweeper**: Excadrill can use Swords Dance and strong STABs to sweep through opposing in teams. It can accomplish this either in sand, or outside of sand by using Rapid Spin to get a speed boost. replace the comma before or with a semicolon, saves gp asking u an extra question

It also provides a valuable Electric immunity, most notably blocking momentum via Volt Switch. deffo mention the use of spin as a support move here

id add a line on mental herb to avoid encore/taunt - just to avoid being locked into sd

Tera
========
While it can work on a team without Tera, Excadrill should be drafted with the intention of making it a Tera Captain. Tera allows Excadrill to get coverage for Pokemon it normally cannot hit like Corviknight and Skarmory. Tera options like Ghost and Flying get rid of its weakness to Fighting and Ground types and allows it an easier time to set up. Excadrill can also make use of Tera Electric to hit Skarmory and Corviknight, Tera Water to hit Landorus-T and Gliscor, and Tera Grass to hit bulky Water types super effectively. It can also use Tera Steel or Ground to boost its STABs. Thus, a sand setter should also be drafted to enable Excadrill to make the most of its offensive profile. It should not be the Tera captain if the team does not have a sand setter. its repetitive w/ later on is all - id also move the reasoning abt not making it a tera cap to the start; makes the paragraph flow a bit better structurally

Draft Strategy
========
Excadrill pairs well with fast, strong round 1 picks like Latios, Iron Valiant or Darkrai that are not reliant on Tera, enabling Excadrill to be the Tera captain. It provides the important Steel and Ground typings to a draft, as well as a strong hazard removal option. It is strongly recommended to draft a sand setter with Excadrill to maximize its offensive profile; however it can function on teams without sand as well. dont give examples here, they come in the bullet points

**Strong special attackers**: Excadrill appreciates a special wallbreaker or setup sweeper on the team to help with breaking the opposing team. Latios and Tornadus-T are excellent partners as they are strong, fast, resist Fighting type attacks, are immune to Ground type attacks and have methods of recovery that are not hindered by sand.

**Bulky Fairy types**: Fairy types like Scream Tail and Clefable make for excellent teammates as they resist Fighting types and are able to deal with Dragon types defensively to free up Excadrill offensively. moonlight only clef w/ drill doesnt seem feasible, especially with the heavy emphasis on how drill should be paired w/ sand, if ur gonna mention it, make it clear that it shouldnt be w/ sand drill

**Utility**: Excadrill is an excellent spinner and can also set Stealth Rocks to support its teammates. With its typing, Excadrill is also able to switch into Fairy types and threaten them out. It also provides a valuable Electric immunity, most notably blocking momentum via Volt Switch. deffo mention the use of spin as a support move here

Niche Items

id add a line on mental herb to avoid encore/taunt - just to avoid being locked into sd

Tera
========

========
Edited, except for the comment on the Utility set. Is calling it an excellent spinner not sufficient and not imply it would have Rapid Spin in the move set?

**Leftovers**: Leftovers provides consistent recovery to utility sets and extends Excadrill's longevity.

**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf allows Excadrill to revenge kill faster Pokemon or slower ones at +1 Speed. Choice Scarf is usually run if sand has a bad matchup and Speed control is needed.

Tera
========
While it can work on a team without Tera, Excadrill should be drafted with the intention of making it a Tera Captain. Thus, a sand setter should also be drafted to enable Excadrill to make the most of its offensive profile. It should not be the Tera Captain if the team does not have a sand setter. Tera options like Tera Ghost and Flying get rid of its weakness to Fighting and Ground types and allows allow it an easier time to setting up. Excadrill can also make use of Tera Electric to hit Skarmory and Corviknight, Tera Water to hit Landorus-T and Gliscor, and Tera Grass to hit bulky Water-types (ah) super effectively. It can also use Tera Steel or Ground to boost one of its STABs STAB moves.

Draft Strategy
========
Excadrill pairs well with fast, strong round 1 picks that are not reliant on Tera, enabling Excadrill to be the Tera Captain. It provides the important Steel and Ground typings to a draft, as well as a strong entry hazard removal option. It is strongly recommended to draft a sand setter with Excadrill to maximize its offensive profile; however, (ac) it can function on teams without sand as well.

**Sand setter**: Excadrill appreciates a sand setter on the team. Tyranitar is the preferred partner, (ac) as it is less passive than Hippowdon, has the important Dark typing, access to Knock Off, (ac) and excellent coverage. Hippowdon, on the other hand, provides a second bulky Ground-type, enabling Excadrill to focus on the offense. Hippowdon also has reliable recovery, making it easier to set sand multiple times if needed.

**Strong special attackers**: Excadrill appreciates a special wallbreaker or setup sweeper on the team to help with wallbreaking the opposing team. Latios and Tornadus-T are excellent partners, (ac) as they are strong, fast, resist Fighting-type (ah) attacks, are immune to Ground-type (ah) attacks, (ac) and have methods of recovery that are not hindered by sand.

**Bulky Fairy-types (ah)**: Fairy-types (ah) like Scream Tail make for excellent teammates, (ac) as they resist Fighting types and are able to deal with Dragon-types (ah) defensively, (ac) to freeing up Excadrill offensively.

**Pivots**: As neither Excadrill nor the sand setter can pivot, Excadrill appreciates Pokemon that can pivot like Zapdos, Rotom-W, (ac) and Uxie, (ac) to bring in Excadrill and allowing it to make the most of the remaining sand turns.

**Ground resists resistances and immunities**: Excadrill appreciates having teammates that either resist or are immune to Ground-type (ah) attacks like Zapdos, Rotom-W, (ac) and Zarude.

Checks and Counters
========
**Bulky Flying-types (ah)**: Bulky Flying-types (ah) like Corviknight, Skarmory, (ac) and Zapdos are immune to Earthquake and resist Iron Head and have reliable recovery to consistently switch in to Excadrill. Landorus-T and Gliscor are also able to switch into Excadrill and soft check it. However, all these Pokemon are vulnerable to the appropriate Tera coverage or Rock Slide.

**Bulky Water- (ah) and Ground-types (ah)**: Bulky Water-types (ac) like Slowbro and Swampert (rc) and Ground-types (ah) like Ting-Lu (ah) and Donphan are able to switch in Excadrill and threaten it with super effective moves. However, they must be careful of +2 Tera Grass Tera Blast Grass. Excadrill can also switch into partners like Latios or Zapdos to deal with them.

**Priority attacks and faster Pokemon**: Excadrill is weak to priority attacks like Jet Punch, Mach Punch, (ac) and Vacuum Wave. Outside of sand, it is also vulnerable to faster Pokemon like Ogerpon-W, Urshifu, (ac) Urshifu-S for darkshifu, Urshifu-R for watershifu, both Urshifu formes for both; you need to specify which of the 3 i mentioned and Krookodile.
