New Pokemon Seen In This Episode
Machamp
Moltres
Roggenrola
Timburr

In which the gang goes to a Galar location and encounters a Galar legendary debuting in the anime for the first time. Not a Journeys episode btw.
Fun fact, not counting movies, Articuno and Zapdos debuted in the Johto anime.
So this got me into a rabbit hole of looking at which Pokemon debuted when: there's a fair few legendary Pokemon that haven't physically appeared in the anime at all, like Giratina, and interestingly most Megas haven't actually appeared in the main anime, instead mostly being confined to special episodes and/or movies.

But there's a completely ordinary, non-legendary, more-than-a-decade-old Pokemon that still hasn't appeared in the anime at all, and I bet you'd never guess which one it is.

...Klang. Of all things. It's only been in two movies (the 14th and the 23rd) and in the prologue to the 16th. What a bizarre thing to omit. But in all fairness Klang is exceptionally forgettable.

Oh that reminded me I had a post similar to this, althought it was mostly trying to track when a pokemon showed up in its given generation or not. I dragged it out of the Journeys thread
Under these caveats:
-Ignoring openings
-Ignoring "World of Pokemon" Segments
-Counting Orange Islands as part of Gen 1 and Battle Frontier as part of Gen 3
-Acknowledging movies and "main anime" specials (that is, I would count Legend of Thunder but not Twilight Wings) that aired during those times, but keeping track of when they "actually" appear in the anime regardless
-Not even bothering to acknowledge the "side game" specials like Mystery Dungeon
-Ignoring Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon since its just like. A weird spot in general.

Gen 1
As you'd probably expect from only having one set of critters to draw on gen 1 mostly didn't have this problem. That said
  • Articuno. Ignoring the stone carving cameo in the first 3 episodes, first appearance was Movie 2. If you want it to show up in the anime proper you had to wait until the Johto anime
  • Zapdos. Uhhh actually I wasn't sure if I should count the big Zapdos animatronic from the Island of Giant Pokemon; like its not Zapdos but its not....NOT Zapdos....? Otherwise its similar to Articuno; Movie 2 and then had an episode in Johto
  • Mew. Obviously it was in Movie 1, but what about the normal anime? Well. That took until Diamond & Pearl where it showed up in a Boss Fantasy Sequence! ...if we don't want to count that then it was the Sun & Moon anime.
Moltres got to show up for the olympic torch stuff (its expressly Moltres this time) and Mewtwo had a string of episodes where it's setting up the movie.

Gen 2
Johto felt like it went on for so long so I really expected this to not be an issue. And yet!
  • Typhlosion. As you mentioned, kind of an interesting case. Its ONLY appearance was Legend of Thunder until the Hoenn anime (where it showed up 3 times!). It's very odd for a starter to be like this; all the other gen 2 starters showed up several times throughout Johto. Again I don't think there's necessarily an issue counting the "Specials" as part of the anime (especially from this era where they are meant to be canon), but I thought it was worth listing regardless.
  • Togetic. There are no caveats beyond World of Pokemon stuff in play here, it simply did not show up until the Misty cameo episodes in Hoenn. And then made one (1) other appearance in Diamond & Pearl. Wild!
  • Flaaffy?? Outside of the third movie it was in Legend of Thunder; it otherwise had to wait until the Hoenn anime.
  • Porygon2. Lol.
  • Celebi. After the 4th Movie it had a Ritchie special (in the Advanced era) and after that it would show up in the Battle Frontier
Flaaffy & Typhlosion make a good case for just counting the specials with no caveats. But it's fun to point out so I'll keep doing it

Gen 3
  • Latias. After Movie 5, it had the Post-DP Brock Special episode. Now normally I would just straight up call that a normal episode of the anime, because it just...aired. Normally. In the time slot. "Legend of XYZ" is in a similar boat, but is treated normally in the west as an example. But the episode never gets aired outside of Japan! And Latias has only appeared in other special stuff like the Mega specials. So it seems worth having here.
  • Latios. After Movie 5 it had to wait until Tobias' Latios to show up in DP.
  • Rayquaza. After Movie 7 it had to wait until a later DP episode.
  • Jirachi. After Movie 6 it had to wait until BW.
All things considered Gen 3 did really well for itself. I really don't get why America never brings over the "wrap up" specials; the only one they've bothered with was the "Legend of XYZ" episode i mentioned earlier. Curious why Jirachi took so long to show up, though. Its appearances are very sparse even today.

Gen 4
  • Porygon-Z. lmao
  • Giratina. The only reason I'm listing this is because I waffled on Zapdos & Mew. Giratina showed up twice in the DP anime once as an illusion from another Pokemon and another time as part of a boss fantasy. It's otherwise not showed up outside of a Movie.
  • Manaphy. Had to wait allllllll the way until the SM anime.
  • Arceus. After its movie (and a brief cameo of its mandala in the Galactic climax) it had to wait until Journeys. Long time coming on this one.

Not too shabby from gen 4. Surprising that Phione, Darkrai & Shaymin all got DP episodes but not Manaphy, though.

Gen 5
  • Klang?! Wha?? It was in the Victini Movie and then....a Genesect movie tie in that never came to the west. I forgot that movie even HAD a tie in. It did at least have characters from the anime so I guess its in the same boat as Latias, but...what a weird Pokemon to be like this. It's still not shown up in another episode!
  • Cobalion. Only showed up in the Keldeo movie.
  • Terrakion. Only showed up in the Keldeo movie
  • Virizion. Only showed up in the KEldeo movie
  • Kyurem. Movie only
  • Keldeo. Only showed up in the Keldeo movie
Klang....

Gen 6
  • Diancie. Movie only. Gen 6 did have some shorts for it & Hoopa as part of movie ins, but I'm not counting those anyway
  • Hoopa. It showed up proper in Journeys after its movie.
  • Volcanion. Movie only. Didn't even get a short for it...
Gen 6 benefited a lot from being a tiny generation.

Gen 7
  • Nobody!
That's right gen 7 has absolutely no issues. Every single gen 7 pokemon from Rowlet to Melmetan showed up in the SM anime proper.

Klink and Klinklang themselves only appeared in one episode in BW.

I think part of the issue is not so much that they aren't memorable and more that their designs are just...not very effective for the anime in a way that they can show up a lot because they are frankly very difficult to animate well, as much as I like Klinklang.

The Klink line is designed to be in constant, never ending motion with their gears spinning indefinitely, which is why they were introduced in the games that had constantly moving sprites, and battle wise they are not very effective to animate when their designs are pretty static otherwise and it's not fun to draw and animate them firing attacks while having to keep them in motion during non-battle moments, which would likely take significantly more animation and drawing effort for the animators.

Klink, Klang, and Klinklang kinda suffer in that regard: their designs are cool for the games with both the BW moving sprites and the future 3D models but they just don't lend themselves well to the anime.

Horizons is also world-tour and multi-region like Journeys to be fair. Both of them cover the entire world in different ways. The fact that JN and HZ mark a new direction for the anime moving forward definitely means we've started having situations like this and may continue to do so. Now the question is: how many Paldea/Gen 9 Pokemon will not be shown in this series? That'll be interesting.

For one it's quite interesting this time that they're continuing to move away from having the protagonists' teams of Pokemon be confined to just Pokemon from that generation. Roy got a Wattrel, but Liko's first capture is a Hatenna, a Gen 8 Pokemon, which she caught in Galar. There may be even more instances of this as this series goes on.

Good list. There's some funny variance among generations (isn't there always).

Bulbapedia's list also notes the amount of Pokemon that appeared ahead of their generation in either the anime or movies - Gen III, again, does the best here, with a whopping 16. I thought I'd misread six but no, it's sixteen! Let's see, that'd be... Blaziken, Zigzagoon, Lotad, Seedot, Wingull, Pelipper, Shroomish, Sharpedo, Wailmer, Kecleon, and Wynaut in the anime proper, and then Azurill, Volbeat, Duskull, Latias, and Latios in specials/movies. Gen II had 11 early appearances and Gen IV had ten - whereas Gen VII only had one Pokemon, Magearna, appear in the anime ahead of schedule (and only then in a movie), and Gen VIII had none at all!

Coincidentally I believe I was posting a few weeks back about how the way they advertise incoming generations has changed in recent years; they don't do the whole early-entry thing as much as they used to. Even in the final Gen IV movie Zorua and Zoroark are the only Gen V species to appear in the flesh. I always loved the way that nearly everyone in the latter days of the Gen III anime had a Gen IV Pokemon except Ash (and Jessie, actually, now I come to think of it): felt like the most incredible tease.

Outside of that - as discussed, Gen VIII has a large amount of Pokemon still yet to debut (though I think all non-legendary Galar species have at the very least appeared in Twilight Wings?) while Gen VII is so far the only generation in which every Pokemon it introduced got to be in the anime. Let's see if Gen IX manages the same feat!

This is a good point.

The anime since Kalos has generally pivoted to giving the main characters Pokemon who're well-liked by fans and are thus easily merched, which I assume is why they made the surprise choice to give Liko a Hatenna. It's pretty well-liked, from what I understand?

God damn! I was getting worried that we were set for another one of those extended new Pokemon droughts that Journeys saw later on in its run, but Episode 24 swooped in to get things back on track in a huge way! Diana had the lion's share of the new guys, but other characters and wild Pokemon chipped in too.

Episode 25: Rivals in the Moonless Night has aired today

New Pokemon Seen In This Episode
Lapras
Entei
Swablu
Kleavor

Ok this was funny because the Serebii page looks like this so I was initially thinking "Oh man another jumbo batch!" and then I go through all of them and realize all of the wild Pokemon except Swablu for some reason were already from Episode 1 so I guess they must've recycled footage from there. Disappointing as hell but we still got some new guys so it's not a total wash.

Much like Episode 24 this is a surprise injection of a bunch of newcomers after a slow period, albeit not as sudden as last time. This time around we have a lot of aquatic fellows. 7.8/10 jokes are still funny right?
Aquatic life of every kind! ...and a monkey and a mushroom.
