[OVERVIEW]
Dugtrio is one of the biggest threats in RBY UU. Its base 120 speed has it outspeeding the entire metagame, barring Electrode and the rare Aerodactyl. This also means it has a groundbreaking 23.4% crit rate, which when paired with an acceptable base attack stat of 80 and STAB Earthquake, has even bulkier foes scared to switch in. It also packs coverage in Rock Slide which can super effectively hit flying types attempting to switch in.

However, Dugtrio is also very frail. If it fails to switch into a Wrap or Electric-type move, its best entry point is only revenge killing. It can also enable relatively safe entry points for huge threats such as Dodrio, Articuno, and Gyarados, which teams can struggle to fend off.

Dugtrio typically enters the game through double switches, revenge killing damaged opponents and switching into the often traded Thunder Waves, easily disrupting the norm of Kadabra interactions. Against many frail teams, getting a substitute up on an attempted sacrifice can spell immediate doom as these teams typically only carry one pokemon who can live a critical Dugtrio attack.

[SET]
name: Douglas McTrio
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Slash
move 3: Rock Slide
move 4: Substitute

[SET COMMENTS]
Set Description
=============

Earthquake is Dugtrio’s primary move and does good damage to most pokemon, especially when combined with its critical hit rate. Slash typically covers all options for minor reward. Rock Slide can significantly chip Flying-types, especially with crits. Substitute can often call out an unknown switch, sacrifice, or fish for misses due to move inaccuracy or paralysis.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
==============
Sand Attack can be used in combination with Substitute to attempt to get free turns. Body Slam can be used to fish for paralysis on all switchins, but does not do much damage. Toxic can be used to prevent Dragonite from using Wrap shenanigans.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Tangela**: Tangela is the best Dugtrio answer in the tier, only being 5HKOed. It can then obtain free sleep and paralysis. However, due to passivity, it can often be double switched on.

**Flying-types**: Flying types such as Dodrio, Gyarados, Dragonite, and even the rare Aerodactyl can freely switch into Dugtrio’s Earthquake, and can survive a couple Dugtrio Slashes or Rock Slides, while threatening it back with their strong attacks. On the other hand, Articuno can switch into an Earthquake and set up a reverse sweep if the team is sufficiently chipped despite Dugtrio’s Rock Slide 2HKOing it. However, these can get worn down over time with Dugtrio repeatedly Slashing them on the switch or even calling them out with a Rock Slide.

**Kangaskhan and Clefable**: Kangaskhan and Clefable are only 4HKOd by Dugtrio’s Earthquake, and can 2HKO it back. However, due to their lack of recovery, they cannot continually switch in.

**Water-types**: All relevant water types can OHKO Dugtrio. Omastar and Tentacruel are weak to Earthquake, but can still comfortably survive it barring a crit.
