Signature Move: Triple Arrows
Basepower: 90
Accuracy: 100%
PP: 10/16
Type:

Category:

Priority: 0
Flags: Contact, Mirror
Effect: High crit. Target: 50% -1 Defense, 30% flinch.

Pros:
  • Signature Move: Triple Arrows is simply nuts. It is basically Razor Shell (50% Defense Drop), Leaf Blade (High critical rate) and Iron Head (30% flinch) in one move and does good damage with a Basepower of 90. All of these effects are good on their own but combined with, you can mess up some Pokemon, especially slower walls. Just for reference, it has a 31% chance to NOT inflict one of these 3 effects. While 30% is a big number as seen by Focus Blast and Scald, so it can as well not do anything, the odds to do at least one is still in your favor. Fighting being a good offensive typing and having good BP also helps, but Ghost-types are immune to it and some of them like Gholdengo and Dragapult are able to resist Decidueye's other STAB. That would be the case if it was not for the next Pro.
  • Scrappy: Scrappy is a phenominal ability for a Fighting-type. Removing the only immunity from an offensive typing like Fighting is great. Combine this with Triple Arrows and you have an extremely spammable move, as spammable as Thousand Arrows even. This allows it to hit Dragapult, Gholdengo and Skeledirge, who all would normally resist each of Decidueye's STABS. Scrappy Triple Arrows also allows Decidueye to be a Defogger that can defeat Gholdengo. Speaking of Defog.
  • Nice Utility Moves: To close up its movepool, it has some great utility moves in Taunt, Knock Off, Defog, Swords Dance, U-turn and Roost. With Taunt, Swords Dance and Roost, it can annoy bulkier Pokemon and stay healthy respectively. Meanwhile Knock Off hits Ghosts for super effective damage and weakens Decidueye's checks, so that Triple Arrows can clean late game and U-turn is as great as ever. However, there's a catch.
Cons:
  • Lack Of Coverage: I praised U-turn, Knock Off, Defog, Roost, Taunt and Swords Dance as good moves it got. However, as far as offensive coverage goes, it is really shallow. Its coverage consists of its STABs, Knock Off and U-turn. Relying on Triple Arrows is nice because of the effects it has and due to no immunity, but this is underminded by a different problem. That being...
  • STAB Combination: Grass and Fighting, while hitting many Pokemon for super effective damage, are both resisted by Bug, Flying and Poison. Now, Bug does not matter that much. Sure Volcarona is hell to deal with but it is one Pokemon. Poison and especially Flying on the other Hand are detrimental. There are many Poisons and they either have good bulka nd resist both STABs or they have really, REALLY good bulk. Flying has gotten more options with the release of Home and this is where the lack of coverage comes in. Sure, Knock Off can really ruin some Pokemon especially Volcarona and Moltres, but there are Pokemon like Amoonguss, Dragonite, Zapdos, Iron Moth, Tornadus-Therian and others who are barely bothered by Knock Off. Tera Blast is an option here and it basically solves the issue of poor match-ups, but having to burn your Tera on a Pokemon that needs rather on a Pokemon that can use it to win, is not ideal.
  • Awkward Stats: Decidueye's stats are really something. Base 112 Attack is decent but not impressive. Its overall bulk is decent for an offensive Pokemon but its speed is really poor. Remember, Triple Arrows might have 3 effects but one of these, being Flinch, is only usable if you're faster and the other, being the Defense drop, is only good when you're able to hit after the drop. Its special attack is mediocre and shoud realistically only be used for physically defensive Pokemon that you want to either guarantee a OHKO against that you cannot break through with Physical attacks.

  • Competition: Lastly, we come to the biggest flaw Decidueye has. Its competition. Breloom shares its typing but is better in almost any way. For starters, it's far stronger and a little bit faster. Base 130 Attacks a huge different and if Decidueye is not running Close Combat itself, the difference is a lot bigger. For reference, CB Breloom with max Attack and Adamant does 41.8% - 49.6% to physically defensive Dondozo. Decidueye achieves 37.6% - 44.6% with the same toolkit, meaning that Triple Arrows variants are worse off when it comes to pur damage. Sure Breloom does not have Scrappy but Technician boosts its Bullet Seed to higher levels than Leaf Blade potentially. For the nerds, Bullet Seed hitting 3 times has a crit chance of 12%, almost as high as Leaf Blade, and it also has a BP of 97.5. Rock Tomb, Mach Punch and Bulldoze are all boosted with Technician and help Breloom with its speed issue. Lilligant-Hisui also comes with Home and it is a really fast Pokemon with Victory Dance, a physical Quiver Dance, and Hustle meaning it beats Decidueye in terms of speed and power a little consistancy. It also has Defog but also Ice Spinner and Healing Wish. Meowscarada is extremely fast and also posses not one but two spammable STABs with one being Flower Trick and the other being Knock Off. Decidueye still has its advantages, mainly Scrappy and the best bulk out of all four (which isn't a high bar I know), but the other three posses either great speed or power, both things that Decidueye cannot provide.

Tera Potential:
:decidueye-hisui:
:decidueye-hisui:
Fighting makes CC and Triple Arrows more spammable then they aleady are. The boost that you gain is really nice and loosing weaknesses to Fire, Ice, Poison and gaining a resistance to Bug, therefore it can 1v1 Skeledirge, Amoonguss and Heatran.

:decidueye-hisui:
:decidueye-hisui:
Steel makes every weakness it has into a resistance aside from Fire, so this allows you to win match-ups against Amoonguss, Toxapex, Corviknight, Tornadus-Therian, Gholdengo and Enamorus. Steel is generally a typing you cannot got wrong with but you have to be careful around Grounds like Ting-Lu and Great Tusk which you check normally.

:decidueye-hisui:
:decidueye-hisui:
Ghost is another typing that helps you deal with other offensive threats and improve your overall defensive profile. Being immune to trapping from Toxapex's and Heatran's trapping is nice to have, so you have a backup plan if things go wrong.

Other defensive options
:decidueye-hisui:
:decidueye-hisui:
These types are nice for various reasons. Fire gives it a easier match-up against Skeledirge, Amoonguss and Corviknight epsecially with Tera Blast for the latter two. The immunity to Will-O-Wisp is nice for Rotom-Wash and Dragapult that want to leave you cripped. Speaking of Dragapult, Tera Fairy is also nice for a Dragon immunity, Dark and Fighting resist. Poison is also nice for a Fairy and Fighting resistance while gaining an immunity to Poison.

Other offensive options
:decidueye-hisui:
:decidueye-hisui:
I chose Tera Rock mainly for coverage against Flying Pokemon like Dragonite, Moltres and Fires like Volcarona and Iron Moth.

:choice-band: Choice Band :choice-band:
Decidueye-Hisui @ Choice Band
Ability: Scrappy
Tera Type: Fighting / Steel
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Triple Arrows / Close Combat
- Leaf Blade
- Knock Off / Shadow Sneak / Close Combat
- U-turn / Shadow Sneak / Close Combat

This set is straight forward. Click your Fighting, whether Triple Arrows or Close Combat. It generally has good moves to lock itself into, with Scrappy Fighting STAB, Knock Off and U-turn. The problem is that it does not hit as hard as you'd like and its lackluster speed also hurts it immensely.

:leftovers: Physically Defensive :rocky-helmet:
Decidueye-Hisui @ Leftovers / Rocky Helmet / Covert Cloak
Ability: Scrappy
Tera Type: Fighting / Steel / Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Careful Nature
- Triple Arrows / Close Combat
- U-turn / Knock Off
- Defog / Knock Off
- Roost

This set can check Great Tusk, being heavily favoured to live 2 CCs from offensive variants after Stealth Rock. It's also a good Defogger with its good match-up against Great Tusk, Ting-Lu and Garganacl while being able to threaten Gholdengo. The problem is that its bulk is mediocre eventhough it has a decent Match-up against some Stealth Rockers.

:choice-scarf: Choice Scarf :choice-scarf:
Decidueye-Hisui @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Scrappy
Tera Type: Fighting / Steel / Ghost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Triple Arrows / Close Combat
- Leaf Blade
- Knock Off
- U-turn

Choice Scarf makes great use of all of Triple Arrows effects but this set is overall really gimmicky. Its low base speed hits 360 with Jolly and max speed investment. This leaves it unable to outrun Iron Valiant, Roaring Moon, Cinderace, Sneasler, Chien-Pao, Tornadus-Therian and Dragapult, so it is easily revengekilled as a Choice Scarfer, which is obviously not good.

:leftovers: Swords Dance

Decidueye-Hisui @ Leftovers / Covert Cloak
Ability: Scrappy
Tera Type: Fighting / Steel / Ghost
EVs: 116 HP / 252 Atk / 140 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Triple Arrows
- Leaf Blade / Roost
- Swords Dance / Bulk Up
- Roost / Taunt

This set aims at getting some of its defensive utility while also abusing its good match-up against bulkier Pokemon, by completely sitting on Garganacl and Dondozo, given the correct set and item choice. It has the same issues as Choice Band without the immediate power but the ability to switch in more safely to defensive Pokemon with Leftovers or Covert Cloak alongside Roost.

With Leaf Blades crit ratio, Decidueye is able to break through Dondozo easily. In a pinch, you could try to drop Dondozo's Defense with Triple Arrows or flinch it. Avalanche is an option that Dondozo can utilise against Decidueye and so is Body Press. An extremely boosted Body Press does significant damage and if Decidueye cannot get a crit, then it can loose this match-up. Granted, a +2 Body Press from specially defensive Dondozo does barely 50% to Decidueye.

Both of Decidueye's STABs threaten Garganacl so it should not come as a surprise that this match-up is in Decidueye's favour. Salt Cure is annoying but if Decidueye runs Roost or Covert Cloak, the latter even protecting against other attacking moves. Triple Arrows is really great here since every secondary effect helps you against Garganacl. It's worth noting that opposing Covert Cloak Garganacl is protected by the defense drop and the flinch chance, but it can still get crit.

Decidueye resists both of of Samurott's STABs and isn't really threatened by Sacred Sword, which I'm guessing is the best coverage move it has, as long as it is not Choice Band. In return, Decidueye threatens it out and thus click Knock Off, U-turn, Defog or heal itself with Roost.

:sv/Ting-Lu:
VS
1685479884300.png
1685479884999.png

Ting-Lu is unable to do much against Decidueye. If it has Roost, it can counteract Ruination and with Taunt it can counteract Whirlwind, but other than that Ting-Lu really does not want to be on the field as long as it stares down Decidueye. Defogging the hazards that Ting-Lu lays and also threatening it makes this a 0/100 match-up for Decidueye.

0 Atk Decidueye-Hisui Triple Arrows vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Ting-Lu: 176-210 (34.2 - 40.8%) -- 50.2% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Decidueye-Hisui Triple Arrows vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Ting-Lu: 360-426 (70 - 82.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Bad Match-Ups

For these Match-Ups, I won't do write-ups since I want to get this done. Long story short, Decidueye is unable to significantly damage to the Pokemon below and even Knock Off does not cripple some of those Pokemon. A lot of them also abuse Decidueye for recovery, set-up or getting a free attack. I will only provide some calculations.

While this match-up is winnable, Decidueye has to get really lucky. Either hoping for a crit or defense drop on the switch or a flinch. If Corviknight does not have Brave Bird, then the match-up becomes more in Decidueye's favour but the fear of Brave Bird makes this match-up a bit of a coinflip. If Decidueye has CC however, it is a clean 2HKO.

Rotom-Wash cannot do much against Decidueye aside from Status and Trick, which are admittingly annoying. If it can avoid them via Lum Berry, Substitute or luck, it can make Rotom-Wash's life really difficult. The issue is that Rotom can simply click Thunder Wave or Will-O-Wisp and ruin Decidueye, specially since its base speed is good and it often runs enough EVs to outrun most Decidueye sets.
*Side Note: I didn't cover Terastallization in these Match-Ups because they change the Match-Up in either direction. I wanted to focus more on the Pokemon's core strengths and weaknesses in the metagame.

Verdict:
Decidueye-Hisui is a really cool Pokemon, however it doesn't what it takes to be OU, at least in my opinion. It will be best suited for the lower tiers were its strengths are more fleshed out. I can still see it having a niche in OU since its unique traits are valuable enough but it will not be a consistant choice.

Decidueye-H has a lot of good points, but the competition drowns it out and it can't compete in the OU meta. The low speed is absolutely devestating for it, even copying Decidueye-A's speed would let it move faster than Moon and Tornadus-T with choice scarf, probably more.

Tailwind does give it a burst of speed even without scarf, enough to outspeed even uninvested Regieleki. The temporary nature makes it hard to sustain, and triple arrows is a somewhat luck reliant move in spite of it's privileges, but it is the best shot at getting it to work.

honestly this mon is kind of bad. its main draw is being a defog user that beats gholdengo with its bulk and scrappy fighting-stab, so that may be a decent option for bulkier structures over talonflame. though it’s a very specialized niche that requires a lot of support; aside from that it’s really dreadful offensively even with scrappy

I think it would have been OK pre-home, but most of the new additions like Enamorous, Slowking-G, Chien-Pao, etc. eat it for breakfast. It doesn't match up too poorly vs some new Pokemon like Samurott, Urshifu, and Lando-T, so it could eek out a niche once all the busted stuff is gone.

I’m excited to use this in UU. It actually has a lot of interesting and unique characteristics (unlike say, Typhlosion-H) but that stat spread ain’t gonna cut it in OU.

Honestly, this thing is just unfortunate, it has so much going for it...

And yet its destined to likely be outclassed by the other good grass fighting types like, chesnaught, breloom, and hisuian lilligant. Like seriously as a defensive mon I would rather use chesnaught, and for an offensive pokemon breloom and hisuian lilligant are so much better.

Probably in the tier below chesnaught wherever chesnaught ends up realistically speaking. (So anywhere from RUBL to NU if I had to guess by the end of the gen)

I remember using deci in PLA and outstalling giratina in the boss battle using bulk up, this bird really was the mvp, without the bird I would not have beaten the game lol, and thought "damn this mon has potential"
that was months ago, and after playing it in ou with a max hp def build with bulk up and substitute, it's really too frail to do anything lmao, absolutely disappointing. I stillwanna use deci more tho, so I guess I'll just sit back and wait until it inevitably drops to uu or ru

It’ll definitely work in UU at least considering it’s probably better than regular Decidueye.
I disagree, at least for OU. Deci at least has a usable Ghost typing, making it a Defogger that can compete with the many fighting type moves thrown about, and it can even handle poison.
