[SET COMMENTS]
Paragraph 1:
Shell Smash turns Cloyster into a terrifying sweeper capable of shredding teams after a single boost. Maximum Attack and Speed EVs with a Jolly nature allows Cloyster to have much firepower after a Shell Smash Boost while also allowing it outspeed Choice Scarf Terrakion and Dragapult after a boost. Because of Cloyster's atrocious Special Defense and HP, it still takes massive damage from Special Attacks even with Aurora Veil support, Focus Sash allows it to take any Special Attack and set up, which is valuable considering several types like Electric are primarily Special Attackers meaning that even with Dual Screens support Cloyster will still be OHKOed by these aforementioned attacks. White Herb synergizes very nicely with Shell Smash, with White Herb removing the Defense drops, allowing Cloyster to keep its defenses intact, which allows to take neutral hits like Earthquake and Outrage much better. Icicle Spear is an effective 125-Base power with Skill Link that can break through Focus Sashes, Sturdy, and Substitutes. Rock Blast is Cloyster's secondary attack and is immensely helpful in the Fire-Type matchup, OHKOing most common Pokemon after a boost. Liquidation offers a Water STAB that allows it to tear through Rock Types easily after a boost. Hydro Pump is another option that can be used to blow past physically defensive Pokemon like Scizor and Torkoal after a Shell Smash boost, both of which are capable of taking physical attacks from Torkoal even after a Shell Smash . If Hydro Pump is used, use an EV spread of 56 Atk / 200 Sp Atk / 252 Spd with a Naive nature in order OHKO 4 HP Scizor and Torkoal after a boost. Lastly Ice Shard can be used to revenge kill faster Pokemon like Choice Scarf Dragapult, Alolan Raichu in Electric Terrain, and Choice Band Rillaboom, all of which can otherwise can revenge kill Cloyster after a boost. However, not running a Water STAB worsens Cloyster's matchup against Rock Teams, and both Rillaboom and Alolan Raichu can survive a +2 Ice Shard at full HP and KO back so this is not heavily recommended .

All of Cloyster's teamates appreciate its ability to KO the majority of Rock and Fire-Types after a Shell Smash boost. Alolan Ninetales is an amazing partner for Cloyster, setting up with Aurora Veil that allows Cloyster to setup easily with the additional defenses. Snow Warning is also valuable for disrupting weather sweepers who could otherwise revenge kill Cloyster even after a Shell Smash Boost; as well its access to Moonblast for Fighting- Types that threaten the entire team. Because Cloyster cannot breakthrough bulky Water-Types like Toxapex and Suicune, teammates like the previously stated Alolan Ninetales, Kyurem, and Arctozolt are greatly appreciated through Freeze-Dry for the former two and Bolt Beak for the latter. Kyurem also offers a Grass resistance, which makes it a good switch in for these attacks. Choice Scarf Weavile is excellent as a form of Speed control since it can threaten both Choice Scarf Jirachi and Aegislash, both of which are significant threats to Ice. Because Cloyster cannot handle every Steel-Type, Mamoswine and Galarian Darmanitan are superb for their STAB Earthquake for the former and Gorilla Tactics Flare Blitz for the latter. Both are also excellent wallbreakers for the early game, which is useful for Cloyster since it is a mid to late-game to sweeper. Because Cloyster is most lethal if it at full HP, Hazard removal is strongly encouraged, especially if running Focus Sash, since hazards prematurely disable the Focus Sash. Avalugg and Alolan Sandslash offer Rapid Spin support to remove hazards, with the former being a reliable physical wall capable of consistently removing hazards throughout the game thanks to the recover, while the latter is a great offensive partner that can aid in the Rock-Type matchup with its STAB Iron Head while also having Earthquake to threaten Fire and Steel-types as well. Hazards themselves are great for chipping at opposing teams; Froslass can set up Spikes, and has Taunt to deny hazard removal. Stealth Rock from Piloswine is also beneficial as well, with Piloswine being a great tank that serves as a great wall thanks to Thick Fat and Eviolite.

Checks and Counters
===================

** Status ** Cloyster should avoid status at all costs. Burn ruins its damage output, paralysis makes it very vulnerable to being revenge killed, and Toxic puts it sweep on a timer.
** Water-Types** Water-Types resist Cloyster's STABs and bulky enough to take Rock Blast. Toxapex is the hardest answer, since it has Haze to eliminate stat boosts, Recover and Regenerator to heal off any damage, and can use free turns to status or lay down Toxic Spikes for thr team. Other water types like Tapu Fini and Rotom-W will cleanly 2HKO Cloyster at worse with their STABS or can either use it as set up fodder.
** Steel Types ** Cloyster can't cover every Steel-Type in one slot. Aegislash hard walls all Cloyster sets, and can easily finish off any Cloyster with a combination of Shadow Ball + Shadow Sneak. Others like Skarmory and Ferrothorn can take a boosted hit and retaliate with Whirlwind or Leech Seed for the former
** Revenge Killers ** Cloyster's speed is still unimpressive even after a boost, so it can be revenge killed by the likes of Regieleki, Choice Scarf Dragapult, Grassy Glide Rillaboom, Alolan Raichu under Electric Terrain, and Vaccum Wave Lucario can easily revenge it after a Shell Smash.

Does Physically Defensive set worth mentioning? I’ve seen it be used on ladder thanks to its access to Toxic Spikes and Spikes, with the former being the only viable user on Ice teams.

Shell smash cloyster has no notable appearance in competivive play mpl/mlt/mwp and it should be defensive. Shell smash should be in other options for its niche for the fire matchup but otherwise, it’s shell smash use is covered by other teammates.

rapid spin, toxic spikes, spikes, teleport/icicle spear/liqudation is the set. If defensive cloyster isn’t familiar to you, I’d suggest looking at mpl statistics and/or pming me for advice, teams, or references for the set.

Ratcatcher 2#6627 is my discord (for now), good luck
