America

It's pretty good here, in some places. I don't know what I would do if I didn't live in the northeastern US though, I would probably kill myself if I had to live in a state where a majority of people think that evolution isn't real....

As long as you avoid the south and middle, the US is one of the greatest places on earth!
Lol and you think it's real; I think I just found the quote I was looking. I really want to know your twisted view of the south though.

My view view of America is sort of like Atlas'. Politics is the main thing I hate about this country, it's just so caught up in it that it's nauseating.

Uh...America is the largest giver of foreign aid in the world. By a lot. And that's just governmentally allocated aid, not even including charitable donations from individuals. Even more impressive considering how little America gets from other countries in return. Looks like we aren't the only ignorant ones on the planet.
Someone pondered if it looked just as generous per capita. When you're very much larger than the rest of the rich countries, it is at the very least something you should look at.

"Americans are terribly ignorant."

American schoolteachers are predominantly liberal.

Coincidence? You decide.

Foreigners bitch about how terrible out health care is, but all of their leaders fly here to get treatment instead of seeking it in their own highly-touted socialist ones.

Coincidence? You decide.

America is the most awesome country in the world. We shit bricks on all those nations whose citizenry does nothing but bitch, whine, and complain about us. Then when they get invaded by the next stupid totalitarian fuck they come crawling, scraping for the United States Marine Corps to save their ass. We send them on an aircraft carrier maintained by the United States Navy, a vessel capable of both kicking ass and saving lives at the same time. Not unlike the United States Marines they deploy, incidentally, who are basically trained to be the human versions of a lethal killing machine and a compassionate, hypercompetent defender. In contrast other nations can barely keep a peace (like the UN that thinks their balls shouldn't match their helmets), the United States Marine Corps can make one.

And even moreso foreigners tend to bitch about a news network they don't even recieve in thier nation, then have the unmitigated gall to call Americans ignorant. At least in the maxim about judging a book by it's cover, it's assumed you saw the damn cover. Clips of Glenn Beck you saw on Youtube doesn't constitute Fox New's actual news coverage. It's an opinion show and that much is obvious to anyone, and even Glenn Beck himself hits you over the head that you should do your own homework (which anyone would know if they watched the entire broadcast instead of getting clips from Media Matters, but again that would require speaking from knowledge instead of ignorance.)

In the end all we ask is for a place to bury our dead when the world goes to shit. You're welcome and by the way we'd appreciate it if you'd go to the graveyards and check the nationalities sometime. You'll know them by the flag that means something to every civilized people on the face of the earth, whether they love it and support it or want to spit on it, stomp it, and burn it.

Reality check: America is the "world's police" and the center for the world's innovation because most of the rest of the world for its entire history decided to treat its citizens like ignorant chattel. It made them all subservient sheep to a police state that infantilizes them from cradle to grave. These nations gutted their own militaries to pay for it and left America to pick up their exposed flank. Americans know the world is a place with a lot of terrible people who would crush your freedom in an instant if given the opportunity and we prepare for these threats. Domestically, we don't look the other way or worse still enable our own decline as our nation's native birthrates drop below replacement and get supplanted by immigrants who don't assimilate to our values. We also don't set things alight because the government raised the retirement age two years as part of an austerity package.

See, in America you're free to believe evolution is bullshit (and get subsequently mocked for it). You're also free to build anything you want, innovate it with your own time, sweat, and money, and generally improve the stock of yourself and everyone around you with your intellect and passion. We don't have time to wait around in a queue every 5 minutes as the nice government official hands us our papers. America is about freedom, and freedom is dangerous concept. Freedom isn't safe. Freedom isn't secure. Freedom isn't easy.

In America we speak one language because unlike the balkanized Europeon nations we simply have too many different people for that kind of multilingual localization to develop. You go into certain neighborhoods and they speak two languages, but it doesn't usually extend to three, and when they go outside those enclaves they are expected to speak the prevailing language of the United States, English.

I don't have any mixed emotions about America. We are a flawed nation full of flawed people and our policies don't always work out for the best. Sometimes our policies even violate our own priciples and we go astray from our republican (small r, as in a constitutional republic) ideals. We are still the greatest nation ever concieved on earth and we strive for the exceptional. We support freedom for ourselves and all people around the globe and are willing to put the blood, sweat, and tears into it to make it a reality. The United States Constitution represents a paradigm shift in government that is still making its opponents quake in their boots to this day, over two centuries later. Government of the people, by the people, and for the people, whose legitimacy extends only based on the consent of the governed. In return every American has the grave responsibility of eternal vigilance and attention. This is why whenever disaster strikes we are there with support and materials to try and ease the suffering. An American campany invented the drill and elevator mechanism that saved the miners in Chile. When the earthquake struck Haiti we sent an aircraft carrier down to act as a mobile electicity station and loaded it up with supplies. I imagine we will do the same for Japan.

If Americans are ignorant, they are mostly ignorant about their nation's own history and their place in the world. Which dovetails quite nicely with the very first snark I made, don't you think? If you are educated by ignorant people who hate their own nation (or if you're foriegn, educated by ignorant people who hate our nation), how else would you feel about it?

Yeah, it is a coincidence. Most poor people tend to be liberal, and most school teachers tend to be poor.

The states with the lowest rates of high school graduation are predominantly conservative.

Coincidence? You decide.

America is the most awesome country in the world. We shit bricks on all those nations whose citizenry does nothing but bitch, whine, and complain about us.
You're right, we are the most awesome country in the world. Except in education, health care, homelessness, corruption, crime, literacy, life expectancy, invading other countries....

What's next, "the terrorists only hate us for our freedoms"?

Most people don't receive it because other countries have standards for journalism. While Fox News is winning court cases in America giving them the right to lie on the air and call it news, they recently lost an appeal in Canada trying to give them the same right there.

Americans know the world is a place with a lot of terrible people who would crush your freedom in an instant if given the opportunity and we prepare for these threats.
Oh my...you really do think they hate us for our freedoms...I was just being sarcastic up there....

Domestically, we don't look the other way or worse still enable our own decline as our nation's native birthrates drop below replacement and get supplanted by immigrants who don't assimilate to our values.
You realize that nearly everyone in this country is descended from immigrants, right? People were saying the exact same thing you just said when they were passing the Alien and Sedition Acts in the 1700s, except they were talking mostly about the French. Then they applied the same reasoning to the Irish, Italian, Polish, and to Mexicans these days. America wouldn't be the same without the immigrants you scorn.
Lol and you think it's real; I think I just found the quote I was looking. I really want to know your twisted view of the south though.
And you don't? Exactly the kind of person I'm glad I'm not surrounded by.

My "twisted" view of the south is that most of the people there are sheltered, poor, on welfare despite hating big government, uneducated or undereducated, obese, fundamental christians who hate homosexuals, blacks, muslims, jews and women. Visiting the south only reaffirmed my views, for the most part it's a shithole quite frankly. "Oh but the people are so NICE"...yeah if you're a white straight christian man then everyone will get along with you. Otherwise, good luck.

I know that not *everyone* from the southern US is like this, but plenty of them are and this is backed statistically.

"Southern hospitality" only applies to baby boomers now, really. The people up North are much nicer in comparison. But, like I said, there are parts in the muck that are actually very modernized about their points of view. Though I do respect people's rights to think what they will of homosexuality.

I just liked the way you said it, you sort of put it on the same grounds as Santa Claus. "If we all believe, than it has to be real! :D"

Wait, that's why you hate the south? I hate to break it to you, but you just described the United States of America. I also really don't see what's wrong with being poor, black, muslim, jewish, or being a women. If you don't like them, then cool, free speech. Sorry that I forgot New England is full of rainbows and sunshine, there's nothing wrong with New England! I'll tell you something else, visiting and living in a place are two separate things. You can't form an opinion of a place until you have lived there.

Most conservative states are in the south. The South has much higher percentage of black and hispanic populations than the north. When adjusted for ethnicity the south does comparably or better with its northern counterparts.

Read this barnburner from iowahawk for more details.

Coincidence? You decide.

You're right, we are the most awesome country in the world. Except in education, health care, homelessness, corruption, crime, literacy, life expectancy, invading other countries....
Education: Liberal teachers, again. Though more comprehensively out upper level universities are the best in the world and voucher programs have drastically increased the options for good education.

Health Care: We are the best in the world, no two ways about it. We invented basically every modern medical device, our cancer research is top notch, we bring the best new treatments to market.

Homelessness: A pervasive problem everywhere on earth. We have one of the most heterozogynous populations distributed over a massive geographic area. If you would like to point to a similar country that has solved homelessness, enlighten me. Bitching isn't persuasive jrrrrrrr, though I must admit you are good at it.

Corruption: You read Howie Carr too? We finally have something in common! On a more serious note, we have massive private organizations dedicated to government transparency who routinely list the deeds and carve-outs of congressmen and senators they find distasteful.

Crime: Tends to gravitate towards poor urban areas that have voted Democrat for decades on end. They remain poor, crime-ridden, and Democrat, even after decades of one party rule. Coincidence? You decide.

Literacy: Above 99%, like every other industrialized nation. Now you're just looking for shit to justify your unwarranted, irrational hatred for your own nation. Did they close down your favorite gay bar or something? Geez.

Life Expectancy: Comparable to other, much more homogeneous nations with much better lifestyle habits. As it relates to health care, we happen to spend a lot in research in development. You know, the stuff that actually cures people.

Invading Other Countries: We invaded Afghanistan. It was a nightmare before and it's still a nightmare now, but our intent was always to allow the Afghans to form their own government. We invaded Iraq. They now have free elections. Historically we've fought all over the world and every last place save a few U.S. Territories who now have that status voluntarily are all independent and free. The rest of the Western world has basically ceded their defense to the United States of America, though part of that was because the last time Germany had a military it went apeshit on the rest of Europe so...

Constrast: The British Empire, Napoleon, Bismarck, The Third Reich, Imperial Japan, Imperial China, Persian Empire (Iran), Roman Empire, Assyrians...

Honestly jrrrrrr you like posting big lists about all the reasons to hate America but really you just have some worthless talking points meant to lead people to your conclusion without actually thinking about each item in your litany. My argument is that America is indeed flawed, but as you can see above, on balance we have a very solid record given our nation's demographics.

What's next, "the terrorists only hate us for our freedoms"?
No, the terrorists hate everyone who does not submit to their radical vision of Islam, and have killed more Muslims than members of any other religion. I like how you had nothing of substance once again, it makes my response easier.

Most people don't receive it because other countries have standards for journalism. While Fox News is winning court cases in America giving them the right to lie on the air and call it news, they recently lost an appeal in Canada trying to give them the same right there.
You do know there's a difference between news journalism and opinion journalism, right? Opinion journalists can "lie" (read: disagree with jrrrrrr and his compatriots worldview) on the air all they like. Fox News' hard news coverage is literally award winning.

I take it then you like the advancing creep of Shariah Law in Europe then? And you also believe organizations in Middle Eastern nations who wish to establish an Islamic caliphate all over the world are not serious? Honestly jrrrrrrr I can't help you if you have something snarky to say about mere demographics and the multicultural domestic policy of foreign governments. I'd like to have an adult conversation with you, but based on our previous encounters I know you assume bigotry on the part of anyone who doesn't share your worldview.

There's a lot of things I like to point out about America that are pretty bad. Then I realise Canada (and most WASP countries) have similar problems.

I'd criticise America for their patriotism, but recent polls have us performing just as badly.

A lot of policy, culture, and economics here is based off the American system. As much as we try to promote any differences, we toe the American line on the Environment, Military, Security, DST (why am I changing my clock in the middle of march), etc. Our economy is basically just an offshoot of the American one, and this goes for most countries as well. I'd like to point out before anyone gets too full of themselves, this is because you have 10 times our population, and industrialised before us, 100 years ago, not because you're somehow better.

The one thing that America does do worse than all other western countries though, is you have a lot of religious nuts like The Diverman that make your country appear incredibly stupid.

Try being poor and breaking your legs. Then tell me whose health care system is the best.

Although I might concede a bit of this one. If you can afford it, the United States does have excellent options for health care comparable to the best nations, if not, better. But if you're not rich, you're pretty much fucked.

The number of homeless people isn't the huge part of the problem, it's the utter lack of resources for them. Cutting back welfare and unemployment benefits while deregulating mortgage company practices creates homeless people.
Crime: Tends to gravitate towards poor urban areas that have voted Democrat for decades on end. They remain poor, crime-ridden, and Democrat, even after decades of one party rule. Coincidence? You decide.
You're completely wrong here. The states with the highest crime rates overwhelmingly vote conservative. Of the top 15 states with the highest crime rates, only 3 voted Democrat in 2004, and only 6 voted Obama.

Coincidence? You decide.

Starting to wish I mentioned prison population and drug laws in that list for reasons why America isn't "the most awesome country in the world", but whatevs.

And it's not like your anti-liberal rant means anything. This isn't a conservative vs liberal discussion. This is an America vs. the rest of the world discussion, which America is losing pretty badly.

Literacy: Above 99%, like every other industrialized nation. Now you're just looking for shit to justify your unwarranted, irrational hatred for your own nation. Did they close down your favorite gay bar or something? Geez.
Tied for 21nd in the world. Behind Tonga and Turkmenistan. Impressive. And wait a sec, I thought liberal teachers were doing a terrible job, now you stick up for our educational system?

And of course, because I talk poorly of America I must have an unwarranted irrational hatred of it. You nailed it. Here, let me say something good about America: our legal system will be studied for centuries after this country fades away, and our founding documents are literally and metaphorically revolutionary to this day.
Invading Other Countries: We invaded Afghanistan. It was a nightmare before and it's still a nightmare now, but our intent was always to allow the Afghans to form their own government.
That completely justifies the war in Afghanistan. And wait - I thought we went there to get bin Laden?
We invaded Iraq. They now have free elections.

No, I don't like the advancing creep of Sharia Law, luckily most of Europe is flat rejecting it. I also don't like the advancing creep of fundamentalist Christian law in this country. Not saying that they are necessarily equal, but this "our religion is the one true religion" nonsense is destroying more than just Arab nations.

So basically they just don't put any effort into teaching blacks.
That statement is just as ignorant and bigoted as anything jrrrrrrr has spouted. Good teachers work hard to teach every student. A lot of the problems in black and hispanic families come from a negatively reinforced culture that promotes gangs, lionizes single motherhood, absentee fathers, and various other social ills that have devastated these families. 70 years ago these pathologies were unheard of in black families, but progressive social politics has attempted to subvert the nuclear family and replace the father with the welfare office as the primary breadwinner for the family.

I can guarantee you the response to my above statement is that the government should always step in to provide everything for everyone lest a single person go hungry. They will blithely ignore that people still fall through the cracks of such a system and suggest that more money will fix the problem. That is the central thesis of progressive social politics: That if every family were given enough money the worst ills of poverty from broken families will be resolved. They will never admit that fathers are not replacable with a paycheck from the welfare office, because stable families are independent, and independent people don't need the money progressives offer through government programs. They are thus less likely to vote for progressive politicians, which threatens progressive political power. This is why inner city schools are always the worst in their respective states. Everyone believes in the model I outlined above and there is too much money and too much power involved to change it. It is why school voucher programs run into so much adversity, because every involved parent knows their child is going to a crappy school and will take any offer to remove them from that toxic environment.

Though being liberal or conservative has nothing to do with teachers in America sucking. We've been fundamentally flawed since the late 1800s, interested in creating quiet and loyal workers, and not teaching.
It's not even that, most of American history is being excised. Instead of teaching the basics they want to turn grade school into a social experimentation laboratory. Horace Mann, the founder of modern public education said that his students were basically "captives to his cause." I'd like kids to be proficient in math, english, and science before we start developing multigrade, multiplatform educational materials for sex-ed.

Health Care: We are the best in the world, no two ways about it. We invented basically every modern medical device, our cancer research is top notch, we bring the best new treatments to market.
The U.S. health care system is ranked 37th by the WHO (World Health Organization)

Corruption: You read Howie Carr too? We finally have something in common! On a more serious note, we have massive private organizations dedicated to government transparency who routinely list the deeds and carve-outs of congressmen and senators they find distasteful.
All the Wall St. executives run the American government practically.

Crime: Tends to gravitate towards poor urban areas that have voted Democrat for decades on end. They remain poor, crime-ridden, and Democrat, even after decades of one party rule. Coincidence? You decide.
Any evidence of this?

Literacy: Above 99%, like every other industrialized nation. Now you're just looking for shit to justify your unwarranted, irrational hatred for your own nation. Did they close down your favorite gay bar or something? Geez.

Life Expectancy: Comparable to other, much more homogeneous nations with much better lifestyle habits. As it relates to health care, we happen to spend a lot in research in development. You know, the stuff that actually cures people.

You really shouldn't be throwing those words around here. Now I'm under the assumption that when you said "When adjusted for ethnicity the south does comparably or better with its northern counterparts", you were just using poor wording. Cause it sure SOUNDS alot like you are saying ethnic people have lower graduation rates, and the south is only so low because of a high number of ethnic people (although I actually read that link and the hispanics were above their natural average in most cases). THAT sounds ignorant and bigoted to me. But maybe you just had a lapse in judgement. Going off on me like this doesn't help.

It's not even that, most of American history is being excised. Instead of teaching the basics they want to turn grade school into a social experimentation laboratory. Horace Mann, the founder of modern public education said that his students were basically "captives to his cause."
"His cause" died a LONG time ago. Schools don't focus enough on the individual needs of each student, because each worker needs to be uniform. Bullies aren't dealt with, because in a work place environment you are going to be bullied by your coworkers, patrons, and superiors. Children learn in school that trying to stop bullies through outside help is fruitless, and that sucking it up is the only thing they can do. Students are given busy work that doesn't teach them anything but how to do busy work, because that is what steel and railroad tycoons in the late 1800s wanted students to be content with for the rest of there adult life.

The thing is, the American workplace isn't so corrupt anymore. But the things that were instilled into the American Education system under the false pretense of "discipline" are still ruining it today.

And because the number one thing we teach in American schools (and teach well) is to be mindless drones, then when students invariably go to college (another thing we do because it's expected and not because every person needs or wants to learn a high level trade) it is that much easier for your Liberal (and Conservative) college professors to indoctrinate them.

Wait a second....we have liberal teachers making ignorant students, but our universities are the best in the world? Huh?
Adjusted for ethnicity? "We Texan teachers would do better, but we just have so many black students".
Professors in higher education have more relevant degrees in their field than "teaching" and usually possess actual life experience. Public school teachers generally have neither of those characteristics, thus why you can have excellent secondary education but poor primary schools. A nice gotcha attempt, though.

Try being poor and breaking your legs. Then tell me whose health care system is the best.

Although I might concede a bit of this one. If you can afford it, the United States does have excellent options for health care comparable to the best nations, if not, better. But if you're not rich, you're pretty much fucked.
So you know of a nation where they magically cure broken legs? It isn't Britain. Britain's NHS is like the roach motel. Patients check in but they don't check out. They die in their own urine and fecal matter. If that happened in a US hospital they would be shut down, but it's the government in Britain so you get what you paid for: free, or should I say, you got jacked 60% of your income to die in a puddle of your own piss. The British papers run stories like this routinely.

The number of homeless people isn't the huge part of the problem, it's the utter lack of resources for them. Cutting back welfare and unemployment benefits while deregulating mortgage company practices creates homeless people.
See, there it is. Money can solve the problem. It's always about more money, isn't it jrrrrrrr? That's the thrust of it, the government needs more money to support people who cannot arrange their lives well enough to have some form of property.

You're completely wrong here. The states with the highest crime rates overwhelmingly vote conservative. Of the top 15 states with the highest crime rates, only 3 voted Democrat in 2004, and only 6 voted Obama.
What the stats basically say is that if your state has a higher percentage of ethnic minorities, allow dubious activity like prostitution, or is a border state, you too could have a lot of violent crime. State statistics are all well and good, but it's like saying The Berkshires are dangerous because there were a lot of murders in Roxbury and Southie. Crime is a localized event that is captured on a state level for statistical purposes in this instance, but the crime rates in localities are much more important.

Starting to wish I mentioned prison population and drug laws in that list for reasons why America isn't "the most awesome country in the world", but whatevs.
America does not need more stoners, we have enough already. Thought experiment: If we applied all the laws to marijuana that we do to cigarettes, would you support that in exchange for marijuana's complete legalization?

That completely justifies the war in Iraq. And wait - I thought we went there to stop Saddam from launching his WMDs at us?

Whether a war is just or not is dependent on your view of just war theory. If you think no invasion is ever justified there's not much use arguing about it. I was simply stating America's modus operandi for every country we've ever invaded for any reason. I said nothing about whether it was justified or not.

I'm sorry, I may have misunderstood your post because you led off with "America is the most awesome country in the world".
And it is. America is more than just a nation, it is an idea, just as The British Empire was an idea at its time.

They are rejecting it now. They won't in 40 years when Mohammed will outrank Pierre as the most common French first name. Demographically they are screwed unless Pierre and Francine start making Paris the city of abundant romance again, literally.

No, I assume bigotry from you because you think gay marriage is a "societal cancer". Big difference.
You got the quote right this time, thus we've made amazing progress.

Give me one ignorant and bigoted thing I've posted, ever.
The last time we had a spat part of your primary assertions was that I categorically hated black people. You routinely accuse me of such pathetic nonsense because you refuse to accept anyone who thinks recognizing gay marriage is a destructive net negative to social order. Question: Do you ackowledge that there are gay people who don't give two shits about gay marriage either. That's neutrality. Some even oppose it, though perhaps not to the extent I do. Moreover I've made my comprehensive views on the matter known multiple times.

Well your economy is fucked beyond repair, crime is only going to go up, and China is soon going to overtake you as the worlds largest economy. Between that and your nations overall anti-intellectualism that only really developed since the 50s, you guys are only going downward from here.

Right, I apologize for that. I'm so used to it being reflexively used against me that I lost sense of myself.

Anyway it isn't poor wording since it's a statistical fact that ethnic minorities do indeed have higher drop-out rates as a population, and therefore any group that possesses more ethnic minorities will inherently be pulled towards a lower graduation rate. It's just statistical information. Facts by their nature cannot be bigoted, they simply are. An analysis of why the facts are that way is useful for changing the information underlying the fact, but repeating the fact itself is not an indication of reduced moral character.

I am genuinely curious to know if this is your personal experience in school or if you got this from an article or somewhere else. As far as Horace Mann, his entire point is that the individual student is worthless unless and until it advocates for his cause. He supported the kind of uniformity you are talking about, in this case being the supposed cause of the railroad tycoons. Whatever it is, the point is to mold students into a groupthinking collective fit only for labor, or advocacy, or some other task that otherwise attracts poor numbers on its own merits.

The thing is, the American workplace isn't so corrupt anymore. But the things that were instilled into the American Education system under the false pretense of "discipline" are still ruining it today.
Do they still even do school uniforms? Based on what I here from the kids I teach 8th Grade CCD to, "discipline" varies according to the teacher and is not at all standardized. Nevermind the stories I hear about various odd behaviors and passive-agressive behavior. From their teachers, mind.

And because the number one thing we teach in American schools (and teach well) is to be mindless drones, then when students invariably go to college (another thing we do because it's expected and not because every person needs or wants to learn a high level trade) it is that much easier for your Liberal (and Conservative) college professors to indoctrinate them.
You get to the right end conclusion of Mann's philosophy (though good luck finding conservative professors) even if the middle got muddled up a bit. There is too much focus on college as a second high school in America, to the point where Bachelor's Degrees are so common as to basically be worth what a High School Diploma was in the agricultural days.

Professors in higher education have more relevant degrees in their field than "teaching" and usually possess actual life experience. Public school teachers generally have neither of those characteristics, thus why you can have excellent secondary education but poor primary schools. A nice gotcha attempt, though.
Professors in higher education are also predominantly liberal, which in your philosophy should mean they're making ignorant students. But enough of this lib vs con debate, this is about USA v world.
Not that I expect you to read the British papers, literacy problem and all that.
What are you talking about? Britain has a higher life expectancy than the US, they have more hospital beds per capita, fewer deaths related to malpractice, and all of that while spending significantly less than the US does on health care. Where are you getting your statistics from?

And it's funny that you mentioned cancer research, since that is basically the only place where US health care has any semblance of success compared to other countries.

See, there it is. Money can solve the problem. It's always about more money, isn't it jrrrrrrr? That's the thrust of it, the government needs more money to support people who cannot arrange their lives well enough to have some form of property.
It's not just about money. Actually, throwing money at the homeless is a poor solution in both theory and practice. The government needs more rules making it difficult to become homeless, and it needs more resources available to help the homeless get off their feet such as shelters and medical care. Once it starts, there is pretty much nothing stopping you from becoming bankrupt here because of the relative lack of a safety net. Other countries have protections that many Americans view as entitlement programs.

Alternatively, I could have said "See, there it is. Homeless people are all irresponsible people who just didn't feel like owning property, right Deck Knight?" Not all homeless people are that way by choice.

America does not need more stoners, we have enough already. Thought experiment: If we applied all the laws to marijuana that we do to cigarettes, would you support that in exchange for marijuana's complete legalization?
Studies in countries where drugs are legalized or decriminalized have universally shown that usage rates drop.

If we made cannabis laws equal to those of cigarettes, of course I would support its legalization. I would actually support stricter laws for both cigs and cannabis. Minors should not be consuming cannabis, you should not be operating cars or other heavy machinery while high, etc. If anything, cigarettes should be illegal and marijuana should be legal based on death rates alone.

You got the quote right this time, thus we've made amazing progress.
It still doesn't make the quote any more sensical.

The last time we had a spat part of your primary assertions was that I categorically hated black people.
And do you have any posts of mine saying that? I remember a debate about Martin Luther King Jr. where my primary assertion was that he wouldn't have voted Republican in 2011.

You routinely accuse me of such pathetic nonsense because you refuse to accept anyone who thinks recognizing gay marriage is a destructive net negative to social order.
You're right, I do refuse to accept anyone that thinks gay marriage is destructive. And you have yet to prove that it is destructive or negative to social order in any way. You can add that to your nonexistent list of bigoted j7r posts.

Question: Do you ackowledge that there are gay people who don't give two shits about gay marriage either. That's neutrality. Some even oppose it, though perhaps not to the extent I do.
Neutrality is far from what your position is. I personally don't "care" about gay marriage since I don't plan on ever getting married, but having equal opportunities as my straight brother to marry the person I love would be nice.

See, there it is. Money can solve the problem. It's always about more money, isn't it jrrrrrrr? That's the thrust of it, the government needs more money to support people who cannot arrange their lives well enough to have some form of property.
Lol, if a couple is poor and they have a child, that child will probably be poor that rest of his/her life, and its not their fault. I suppose if you were born poor you would feel differently.

Anyways its really hard to take anything you say seriously when you post stupid, arrogant crap like "America is the greatest country every conceived", "We are the best".

Ok, I erred in saying that his cause died. I was trying to put a name to what I was talking about, but I didn't think it was Mann because he died in the mid 1800s.

It is both my personal experience and it just happens to fit in with everything Mann was trying to accomplish. I was part of several public school systems of varying quality in varying political climates, and everything I said was true of all of them.

When I say discipline, I don't mean school uniforms or what merits detention. I mean the "discipline" of of knowing your place in a standard hierarchy, that hard work directly translates to accomplishment and doing what you are told directly translates to responsibility. Regardless of how a teacher actively instills discipline, they will help instill these disciplines because the same things were nailed into them as a child. This is the Mann master plan, and it fucking worked.

Rankings are pretty meaningless when dealing with america. The fact of the matter America's enormity (and it is absolutely enormous, I mean, is the next largest western country germany - with like a quarter the population?) means it will not win a per capita ranking in pretty much anything (pretty sure Germany doesnt win many per capita rankings either).

I would be pretty curious to see how individual states fare. I bet some would do very well.

However, in my limited experience of USA I did notice one thing. Homelessness is way, way higher than I saw anywhere else I have ever been. Maybe it's just because America's homeless are more noticeable, but wow.. They are everywhere. I mean I had been pretty shocked by the amount of homelessness in Europe and Canada, but America just blew that away..

Tonga has a lot of advantages over USA in regards to literacy. Eg I am pretty sure immigration to Tonga is pretty close to 0.

Whether or not you like us, you have to admit that without us, everybody would be kind of lost.
qualify this statement. right now it doesn't mean anything, and if you're implying what i think you're implying, you're supremely ignorant

EDIT: Firestorm, that song is hilarious and about 2.5x better than our actual national anthem.

Az, are you kidding? Without the United States to lead the way, other countries might not have fast food and be as obsessed with consumer culture!

The United States has always had major problems with cities first and foremost, and I think that a lot of those problems have not really been fixed. Obviously life is better than it was in the slums of the 1910s, but there are a lot of problems, and it is kind of weird how much a recession can randomly hurt cities. Gay hatred is definitely alive and well in some parts of the nation; my rich as fuck hometown (Plano, 250000 people) voted down gay marriage when Texas voted on it like 90 to 10% if I recall correctly, it was like 5 years ago, either ~90 or ~80%, but I think it really was the more radical 90%. I think some of the points earlier about how much the isolation in this nation from the sprawling size really hurts things and allows this disjoint between cities/states to the federal government allow for really weird governmental policy and really retard progress. I do not know a necessarily better solution, but it sure as shit is not what we have going on now.

Uh...America is the largest giver of foreign aid in the world. By a lot. And that's just governmentally allocated aid, not even including charitable donations from individuals. Even more impressive considering how little America gets from other countries in return. Looks like we aren't the only ignorant ones on the planet.
Too bad ungodly amounts of it go just to Israel (20% averaged out over decades? Not trying to cite a number out of my ass, it is what I remember as "about right").

"Americans are terribly ignorant."

American schoolteachers are predominantly liberal.

Coincidence? You decide.
A thread was going pretty well and then Deck Knight invaded it with petty invective, pointless allegations, and generally deluded (trolling) nonsense. I do not have to use shitty sound byte rhetoricals to point out that this is not a fucking coincidence.

No, it is not a coincidence that schoolteachers are often liberal; rather, it is completely immaterial. If as a nation we have actually lost some amount of average intelligence, then it has to do with school governmental policies failing and also general societal trends since everyone started getting comfortable houses, easy salaries, and really nice stuff to own. The teacher who taught me the most during my few university years was a liberal teacher in a class about depictions of suicide in Japanese literature. She was the best teacher that I have had in my life, and around 75% of the class did not give a rat's ass about reading the assignments, responding to her in class discussions, writing the essays, or responding to her criticisms of their essays. It was not her fault, and certainly not any of her liberal viewpoints that mattered; she was incredibly enthusiastic, incisive, and engaging. Sure this is anecdotal, but it has more to do with reality than whatever stupidity you are spewing about liberalism equating to stupidity.

To summarize, you are a specious fuck who hates intelligence, as usual.
