Doubles ADV Regice

  • Regice's monstrous Special Defense allows it to wall the metagame's plethora of special attackers. Its BoltBeam coverage gives it a decent offensive presence, though its middling Special Attack makes it incapable of 2HKOing most Pokemon not weak to its attacks. Its weaknesses to Metagross and Tyranitar are also a big blow compared to other special walls like Snorlax, which fears them much less.
  • Ice Beam 2HKOes Latias, Zapdos, and Gengar while 3HKOing other common Pokemon like Swampert and Raikou. Thunderbolt 2HKOes Starmie and 3HKOes Suicune but laughably fails to 3HKO Metagross.
  • Regice makes good use of Thunder Wave, as it can be very difficult to remove before getting the opportunity to spread paralysis to multiple foes. Counter can be used to punish the physical attacks that Regice lures in with its lower Defense.
  • Leftovers gives Regice passive recovery, which increases its durability and improves its matchup into the array of special attackers in the metagame. Since Regice's bulk leads to it staying around longer, it can make extra good use of the additional health.
  • Regice is one of the slowest Pokemon in the metagame, so pairing it with fast attackers like Raikou, Latias, and Starmie to make up for its lack of Speed is recommended. Latias also greatly appreciates having another Pokemon to threaten opposing Latias so that it doesn't have to risk mirror matches. Arcanine, Swampert, and Zapdos are all viable partners with strong matchups into Metagross, which is Regice's worst matchup. Explosion users like Gengar and Metagross can swiftly remove multiple Pokemon at once, making up for Regice's lack of firepower, with the latter also boasting a strong matchup against Tyranitar. Suicune and Starmie greatly appreciate Regice's ability to wall and eliminate Raikou and Zapdos so they don't have to worry about their powerful Thunderbolt. Swampert and Sceptile check Tyranitar, which is greatly appreciated, as Tyranitar can use Dragon Dance on Regice freely.

what do you think of 252 HP / 152 Def / 104 SpA Modest?
196+ Atk Metagross Meteor Mash vs. 252 HP / 152 Def Regice: 307-362 (84.3 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
not that u rly do anything back to gross but it can help u get a twave or ice beam off against its partner without losing the specific benchmarks you mention in prose (edit: revisited this and have no clue where 196+ Atk metagross comes from but i'd still like to discuss a better spread cuz 252/252 surely aint it...)

252 hp / 136 def lives +1 tar hp rock
+1 252 Atk Tyranitar Hidden Power Rock vs. 252 HP / 136 Def Regice: 307-362 (84.3 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after sandstorm damage and Leftovers recovery

alternatively, frania's sample team has 52 HP / 252 SpA / 204 Spe Modest w/ HP Fire; what does this do?

  • Regice's monstrous Special Defense allows it to wall special attackers like Latias, Zapdos, Raikou, Gengar, and Suicune (this seems like a few too many examples; rewrite to fewer or "the metagame's plethora of common special attackers"?). Its BoltBeam coverage gives it a decent offensive presence, though its middling Special Attack makes it incapable of 2HKOing most Pokemon not weak to its attacks. Its weaknesses to Metagross and Tyranitar are also a big blow compared to other special walls like Snorlax which fears them much less.

  • Regice makes good use of Thunder Wave as it can be very difficult to remove before getting the opportunity to spread paralysis to multiple foes. Counter can be used to punishes the physical attacks that Regice lures in hopes of hitting with its lower Defense. Hidden Power Fire is its strongest attack against Metagross but fails to 2HKO bulkier variants.
  • Leftovers gives Regice passive recovery which increases its durability and improves its matchup into the array of special attackers in the metagame. (mention it can usually stay on the field for longer bc its hard to remove hence passive recovery good)
  • Regice is one of the slowest Pokemon in the metagame, so pairing it with fast attackers like Raikou, Latias, and Starmie to make up for its lack of damage is recommended. Latias also greatly appreciates having another Pokemon to threaten opposing Latias so that it doesn't have to risk mirror matches. Explosion users like Gengar and Metagross (Regice commonly invites e.g. Tyranitar; Metagross is a good teammate for that too) can swiftly remove multiple Pokemon at once, making up for Regice's lack of firepower. Suicune and Starmie greatly appreciate Regice's ability to wall and eliminate Raikou and Zapdos so they don't have to worry about taking powerful Thunderbolts. Swampert and Sceptile check Tyranitar, which is greatly appreciated as Tyranitar can use Dragon Dance on Regice freely. (needs mention of requiring a metagross check somewhere)
