Hey, don't worry about being experienced with it. When people I know talk about things like Paint Tool SAI, I have no idea what they're saying either.

I use pencil and paper for lots of stuff (like drafting the design, for example), but for this I used a tablet to draw directly into Photoshop. I make a sloppy layer where I lay out the composition, and then another layer where I do smoother line in just black. Then, on a layer underneath the lines, I do coloring and shading. It usually goes, top-to-bottom: Lines, Shading, Colors, Sketch (Hidden), Background.
For the lines, I use the most basic round brush with pen pressure on. I like to use the pencil tool on the coloring, which makes it easier to change later with the fill bucket. The shading is the same brush as the lines, with the dark parts being 75% gray and the light parts being 25% gray (since it interprets 50% as being the base level).
