+ ---- + ------------------ + --- + ------- + ------ +
- Metagross at #2 is kinda surprising, in the good way. Absolute beast of a Poke in every game
- Milotic in the top 10 is great, it's so strong against the metagame. It needs supports against the dreaded Tar/Aero but other than that...
- Magneton at #9 is also unusual. People really didn't like Skarm!
- Zapdos was wayyy too low in my opinion
- good to see people realize how much Forretress and Claydol suck

More Rhydons than Golems in rby is a pretty hot statistic. It has a worse winrate but I still think people often give it worse credit than it deserves. The 2hko on Chansey is that big of a deal. I feel like Lapras is a really nice go-to mon in terms of your filler at the moment. It checks the rocks, it checks slowbro and unlike slowbro it's not an autolose vs zapdos. That's all things you want to if you are running non-boltbeam Chansey. What I would be most interested in the rby charts are moveset usage stats. Especially for Lapras, I wonder what people run there. I'm pretty much a defender of some form of Rest Lapras to sit on Reflect Chanseys and Rest Laxes or Blizz/Bolt/Sing/Hyper Beam to attempt to fancy the opposing Chansey. I think the biggest trends in RBY right now are moveset things. Reflect Chansey seems to be more popular than boltbeam right now, which does explain the rather high usage of Slowbro and the Rocks. Apart from that the RBY stats seem pretty unexciting to me. Gengar is probably a bit shittier than expected, less people dropped Lax than I expected and Chansey is hopefully only on top of the usage because some Tauroses weren't revealed.

Gsc stats are pretty much the way everyone would expect them, Lax, Spikes, Electrics, the rest. Eggy being on almost half of all teams is a bit surprising though. Starmie and Suicune have an oddly high win-percentage, Nidoking an oddly low one, but I assume they both influence each other quite alot there.

In gsc I found it kinda interesting that two of the most passive stallmons in Umbreon and Star ranked higher than offensive staples such as King, Vap and Gar. Admittedly this is the only case I noticed where those types of pokemon rank relatively high so idk if you'd call it a trend for defensive teams, but it's still quite interesting.

In RBY things are about what I'd expect, with the big 4 + Zam/Star/Jynx dominating. Most notable thing to me is that Rhydon got more usage than Golem. I know not everyone agrees with me when I say Rhydon isn't nearly as good as it used to be but even so, this is a bit surprising. Lapras is another one I find notable since I'm not too high on it atm, but Beds' analysis makes good sense to me, and in rby there's enough battles that its large win% is maybe actually significant

Interesting, I'm much more on the Sing/Hyper Beam boat too. Overall I think what you run on Lapras depends on what you want to do with it. For example I've always felt (and considered) Confuse Ray as a consequence of running Body Slam (which I think you want if you lack reliable paralysing tools for example because you're leading Gar/Jynx) and not something I mainly want to run. It's a personnal choice because I don't like it and I don't like to rely on luck if i'm not in a bad position (and i mean honestly look at those numbers: http://rby2k10.proboards.com/thread/1929/lapras-chansey-parafusion-calcs the most important one is obviously Paralysed Chansey vs. healthy Lapras). I don't want to use my Lapras to break opposite Chansey if I already have tools do to so, I mainly want to use it against Tauros/Lax/Rocks/Para'd Zap. The main tool you have to break Chansey is Snorlax. Suppose you have it against opposite para'd Chansey and throw in a Body Slam, Chansey stays in, Thunder Waves, and then your opp switches. Later on during the game if you have Lapras and your opponent goes to his -on average- 59% Chansey, the Blizzard on the switch-in puts it in range of Hyper Beam around 50% of the time (basically the combination of these 3 moves is 93.3% - 109.8%). There are some specific scenarios in which Hyper Beam can come in very handy, like finishing off a paralysed Jynx who previously took a Seismic Toss and is switching into Blizzard, or a paralysed Alakazam being used as an emergency switch-in. When those scenarios occur it can give you a sweet and direct advantage unlike Confuse Ray which is a slow and unreliable strategy (+ not really difficult to play against bar bad scenarios. And I think if you know your opponent is switching to a paralysed mon to check Lapras you're better off double switching to smth that pressures it, even if it's true you don't always have the possibility to do so. But trying to break stuff with Lapras just cripples it way too much in order to do things other mons can do, and afterwards you can't do the things Lapras does best anymore or at least not as good). Like you don't necessarily use Hyper Beam as much as you would use Confuse Ray, but the scenarios in which Hyper Beam is useful I feel are often better than the ones where Cray is. Spots tend to repeat too. Confuse Ray can put me in scenarios where the risk of my Lapras getting crippled is way too high. Playing around it isn't very hard either.

Sing is a good desperation move (more than Cray is) especially if you had a bad start (rip frozen chansey) because it's a 55% chance of directly shutting something off. Also it's useful in some specific spots like when you have it against like egg or rocks for some reason and your opponent is switching to his unpara'd Chansey or his Starmie, I'd rather take 55% of sleeping than 10% of freezing. Sing is useful in some tense/complex endgame scenarios too but it's not a move you spam. But overall the main reasons you use Lapras are BlizzBoltTypingStats, the other two moves come in handy at times but it's up to preference a lot. There's no definitive answer. I guess you could do stuff like Sing + Cray or Bslam + Hyper Beam. Lapras has a weird match-up against Slowbro, it can annoy it for sure but it ends up severely crippled, also Psychic isn't uncommon. If you run Lapras you can use Egg to answer Slowbro since Lapras can take care of rocks and help against opposite egg. I don't really see Lapras playing for crits, I guess you could spam sing even if you're para'd or try to para with Slam and then cray spam tbolt force it to rest and go to bull, but you sort of trade at best.

EDIT: Also to answer the question "why didn't persian win" => because it doesn't check anything unlike the other fillers

Obviously the sample size is far too small to pull any serious judgments from win% but it's still a nice snapshot of the meta. RBY OU's degree of Pokemon centralization under the current ruleset really is ridiculous.

These stats are also misleading as a result of not including unrevealed mons in the replays. 16 mons across 160 teams in RBY is quite a bit considering that it's lategame mons that appear underrepresented. DPP's got it worse, though.

Im surprised no one is using Gothitelle in BW, its great at trapping annoying mons such as CM Rachi, Bulky Starmie, Ferrothorn, Bulky Toad, Sp.Def Tran etc... and proceed to just setup in there faces and likely win the match. Trapping is still broken in BW and I thought more competent players would abuse it more.

It also surprised me to not see as much Sand Spikes + Reuniclus teams that dominated the meta around a year ago. I guess more people are preparing for it by bringing their own form of phazing, as there ain't much that can stop a Reuniclus after a couple of CM boosts.

People should also start using Sand Rush Exca on Rain teams, helps with the Sand matchup tremendously (making it nigh impossible sometimes for the opponent to win).

Can't comment on other metas cause I don't play them that much, but why does Lax not have 100% usage in GSC??

ive defended lapras for a long time and im glad it gets such a high winrate

bslam + hbeam prolly has good merit. i should use it more.

sing lapras is best with lead zam (maybe lead jolteon too), if you use gengar or jynx + lapras id not use sing since itll often be a waste of a moveslot.

nidoking winning 1/11 games is ridiculous

Honestly I think the Golem/Rhydon stats say a lot - the teams would be mutually exclusive (no one has both of them on a team, just one or the other), teams with either a Rhydon or a Golem are roughly equal (19 v 17 is for all intents and purposes an even split), and Golem/Rhydon serve the same functional role on a team, but Golem teams win significantly more than Rhydon teams. Like Ortheore I believe Rhydon is an inferior choice in the "new meta." And even though this is a small sample size etc etc I still wouldn't hesitate to point to these stats as a real-world example/anecdote that illustrates that opinion pretty well.

winning 7/19 and 8/17 games, respectively, isnt enough to make a viable example imo

i do agree that golem is better than rhydon but i do not believe that these stats make that case

The sad feeling when you are the only loss to nidoking :(

I feel like the metagame this year was shifting more towards defensive than it has in a while. Especially in the playoffs, it seemed like almost every single team that was used was some super defensive variant. You had a lot of umbreons, starmies and suicunes especially in the playoffs. I would like to see win statistics for the different variants of snorlax, but obviously that would be hard to do. I would expect Belly Drum lax to be very high, and the curse lax to be a lot lower, just based on the mons that were in the metagame at the end.

You'll notice I hedged a bit and said example/anecdote which doesn't have to pass statistical muster :) Although I would be interested if someone who has taken a statistics or experimental science class more recently than I have could calculate fun stuff like this to test for statistical significance. I've seen a lot of people who do matchup odds calculating best moves to use in certain situations (like magic9mushroom) ... does anyone do p-value calculations and other stuff with usage stats/battle results? I feel like there are a lot of fun questions to calculate in this way throughout all of the gens

Hey I brought Nidoking offense when you kicked my ass! Curselax too 8)

Obviously the stats will not be perfect given such a small sample size, you also have to take into account that old gens W/L seems to be much more drastic one way or the other for most players, so great ppl like Conflict and IFM will inflate the stats of pokemon that they favor

Nido really should be way higher though...

I meant to respond to this thread a while ago but never got around to it. I'll only comment on the ADV section, but here are my thoughts:

No surprise at Tar in the top spot. Metagross at #2 is pretty cool. He fits on almost every team archetype, whether it be sand stall, hyper offense, boom team, or even be a great BP recipient. He just about always takes a huge chunk of HP from an opposing wall, can run cool Lum Berry + Psychic sets to mess with Gengar, provides a nice secondary Rock resist, can lure Swampert, etc. The list goes on. Gross is undeniably top tier in today's metagame.

I'm really surprised to see Snorlax so high. In my opinion, he's affected more negatively by the presence of Sandstorm than any Poke in the tier. His bread and butter Curse set is so ineffective in Sand, and he's even quite weak without EQ coverage, yet you almost can't afford not to run Shadow Ball in that slot. Curse + Boom is still a great and cool set, as is the utility set with pretty nice coverage. But I'm just really down on Lax these days and have a hard time extracting good value out of him anymore.

It's kind of funny to me that Skarmory and Magneton were used basically equally, but the Mag teams won quite a bit more often. Not entirely sure what can be concluded from that, if anything. Just an interesting little nugget.

Milotic seems to really have risen in popularity. I think the mere presence of MixMence alone is enough to justify using Milotic. Nice to see her reclaiming some of her former glory.

Looks like the disparity between Suicune's usage and effectiveness continues...

I would've maybe expected to see Aero a little bit higher. Aero + DD Tar + Spikes continues to be an extremely strong team option today.

Other than that, everything looks to be about where it should be. Venusaur needs some love though and Forretress doesn't suck :p

Also where's the top tier threat, Kingler?

ADV:
Meta getting second highest usage isn't really surprising seeing how much it can do for a team - rock resist, sweeper, catch-all check to threats with its super Explosion and bulk, while Pursuit handles Gengar as well as anything and CB just shreds. In assent with the above poster I don't really like Lax but I see what it can do (mostly punching holes while keeping Offensive Waters from taking you to church), which makes its appearance at spot 3 not too surprising (especially seeing how Mag was used a lot too).

Milo is cool, Status options, instant recovery, and its ability to wall not only MixMence but Metagross and Kingdra nicely make it a good pick. Starmie right behind it is also interesting (considering how Cune Zap Aero and all are a bit lower), it seems that people don't like Spikes! It's cool though, Bulky Starmie tends to do nicely vs everything especially with support options while the offensive set perpetually threatens to rip a hole in someone's face. V nice I like, and it definitely did well for itself (so did Suicune and Aero, but that's another thing).

Jirachi being at number 17 with a 33% winrate is surprising considering how much it can do and threaten (especially seeing how CB got its first appearance on the big screen). People probably just weren't doing it right...

DPP:
The glaring statistic is that TTar, Jirachi and Starmie have over 50% usage - so maybe DPP is becoming centralised. All three are top mons of the tier but jeez, that's really heavy, especially considering their lowish win-rates. Starmie being that high is probably a testament to just SR being huge and annoying for certain things which make it a priority to get rid of it. BKC may not have been off base when he was calling for its ban...

A lot of the things on the list are probably standard tournament trends which explains why like Bronzong and Nidoqueen are so high, along with the trend of using common things like Breloom (which is just an absolute monster). Another tour thing is that Gengar and Kingdra (which are usually lambasted for their issues) did really well for themselves but other Titans of the tier (like Dragonite, Infernape and Scizor) floundered. I'd say over preparation for them and their own issues (mostly residual damage) did them in, while things that are harder to straight up counter like Breloom and Gengar prospered (which again, is probably just a tour thing). Suicune did awfully (which I will also put down to people not doing it right cause it's really really great). Uxie getting used 6 times was neat and it did well, which is nice. Don't have serious opinions on anything else (Lucario 1-0 though).
