Thread stolen from Fusion Flare who copied someone else because most of these OPs are pretty generic.

Metagames are constantly changing, and old gens are no exception. Each generation, we are beheld to tier staples, absolute top threats, and the like.
The concept of this project is to find countermeasures to said threats in the current state of old metagames. Every week, I will submit a victim for you so that you can submit checks or counters to the pokemon. Then, after submissions are placed in, voters will vote which ones are the most effective in their eyes.

In addition, feel free to use synergies with multiple Pokemon if you believe that is better for common team structure. This does not mean use Tentacruel + Slowbro + Slowking to beat Keldeo.

Rules:
1. When nominating your check/counter take a gander at The Smog:
Pokémon A checks Pokémon B if, when Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

There are some parts of those definitions that may be confusing to the unfamiliar, so now I'm going to make sure we're all on the same page. "Hax" does not mean cheats or codes used to win. "Hax" means, loosely, things that have a chance of happening but usually don't, for example, critical hits (under most circumstances), Ice Beam freezing, and Fire Blast missing. This means that we don't take into account these types of things when we analyze if one Pokémon checks or counters another. Despite this, it's unwise to declare that one Pokémon checks another when the victorious Pokémon relies on hitting Focus Blast three times in a row, or something like that. Basically, you're often okay ignoring hax unless something that doesn't have a high chance of happening must happen in order for a Pokémon to check or counter another.

There are some things, like flinching, which you would normally consider to be hax but aren't always so. For example, Jirachi has a 60% chance to flinch a slower opponent with Iron Head, so in this case, flinching is not hax because it happens over half the time. For things such as missing or secondary effects, such as a Scald burn or Special Defense drop from Seed Flare, that have a decently high chance of happening, you need to think about them when you analyze checks or counters. Even though they might fit the standard definition of hax, they happen often enough for you to expect to see them in real situations somewhat commonly. There's no official or best guideline, but in my opinion, if some form of "hax" has a 30% chance or higher of happening, you should keep it in the back of your mind because it's not a negligible occurrence.

2. Only post Pokemon sets that are viable in the respective meta. Try to stick to the Pokemon on the Viability Rankings.
3. Reservations are allowed, however if you don't complete your post within 24 hours someone else is free to take your Pokemon. Please do it as soon as you're able after reserving.
4. You can correct people, but be civil.
5. Calcs are helpful, but not necessarily required for a good post.
6. Give explanations. Not an entire essay, but at least a few sentences.

Have fun!

One of the most fearsome wallbreakers and Choice Band users in ADV, it seems like a fitting mon for week 1

Salamence @ Choice Band
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 116 HP / 252 Atk / 140 Spe
Adamant Nature
IVs: 30 SpA / 30 SpD / 30 Spe

Swampert @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 44 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Earthquake
- Ice Beam
- Protect
- Hydro Pump

The truth is that this set does not have much explanation, it is a good salamance check since it can withstand 3 hits from it, in addition to being able to make 2HKO of ice beam.

0 SpA Swampert Ice Beam vs. 116 HP / 0 SpD Salamence: 292-344 (81.3 - 95.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Salamence Hidden Power Flying vs. 248 HP / 216+ Def Swampert: 153-181 (37.9 - 44.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers

Capture.PNG

  1. Between the 2 of them Moltres and Jirachi wall all of banded Salamence's moves flawlessly and they can seriously punish the opponent for locking into the wrong move by using a status move freely.
  2. Jirachi is able to support Moltres with wish support.
  3. The 2 combined also do a great job of taking on metagross which is a very common partner for mence.
  4. Neither of the 2 can be trapped by magneton (or not easily in the case of rachi)
  5. The offense teams banded mence often finds itself on often lack good switch ins to moltres so being able to support it like this with wish support and lots of protect scouting can make it a real nightmare for those teams to deal with.

:tyranitar:
tyranitar.png
:tyranitar:
As an extra note pursuit Tyranitar has great synergy with these 2 mons not least because it can also take advantage of the protect scouting to trap mence and other choice users but also because this team really appreciates the removal of gengar as it is a threat to moltres and also astarachi hates having to take wisp as it severly reduces net recovery per wish + tect sequence.

Solrock @ Leftovers
Impish Nature
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 76 Atk / 176 Def / 4 Spe
- Reflect
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power Rock
- Explosion

Switches to any attack easily and threat the mence back immediately with hp rock/explosion. 76 attack evs allows you kill mence in 2 with hp rock. If you are looking for a perfect switchin that can't trapped by mag, this is it. Reflect helps teammates wall mence better and it's immune to spikes!! No longer need to worry about mence spamming hp flying after setting 3 spikes up. yayyy!

252+ Atk Choice Band Salamence Rock Slide vs. 252 HP / 176+ Def Solrock through Reflect: 60-71 (17.4 - 20.6%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Salamence Hidden Power Flying vs. 252 HP / 176+ Def Solrock through Reflect: 42-50 (12.2 - 14.5%) -- possibly the worst move ever
Salamence Earthquake vs. Levitate Solrock: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- possibly the worst move ever
76 Atk Solrock Hidden Power Rock vs. 116 HP / 0 Def Salamence: 190-224 (52.7 - 62.2%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
76 Atk Solrock Explosion vs. 116 HP / 0 Def Salamence: 447-527 (124.1 - 146.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Counter: Gligar!

Gligar @ Brightpowder
Ability: Sand Veil
EVs: 8 HP / 252 Atk / 28 SpD / 220 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 30 SpA / 30 SpD / 30 Spe
- Swords Dance
- Hidden Power [Flying]
- Earthquake
- Sandstorm

Gligar is the best cbmence counter in the game. Its unique typing and ability allows it to shrug off all of CB Mence's attacks; it is immune to ground, resists fighting, and is neutral to flying and rock. Furthermore, it takes advantage of the fact that mence must choice-lock itself into a move, setting up powerful swords dances and threatening to sweep the opposing team.

Most people think that gligar's controversial ability, sand veil, means that tyranitar is a mandatory partner for it. This would make gligar a bit worse as a mence counter—cbmence outspeeds and ohkos tyranitar. Well think again! Gligar can use the move sandstorm to turn into the pokemon embodiment of MC Hammer, shuffle stepping and swords dancing across the battlefield because salamence can not, in fact, touch this.

HP rock, HP ice, and HP dragon should all be considered in place of hidden power flying. Flying has stab, but these hit mence super-effectively. Consider the trade-off.

Here are the relevant calcs:

252+ Atk Choice Band Salamence Hidden Power Flying vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Gligar: 0 (0%)
252+ Atk Choice Band Salamence Earthquake vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Gligar: 0 (0%)
252+ Atk Choice Band Salamence Brick Break vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Gligar: 0 (0%)
252+ Atk Choice Band Salamence Rock Slide vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Gligar: 0 (0%)
+6 252+ Atk Gligar Hidden Power Flying vs. 116 HP / 0 Def Salamence: 420-495 (116.9 - 137.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO GG nab

edit: I'm supposed to give an explanation, oops. How do you get maximum value out of Pokemon which have massive resistances and massive weaknesses? By making sure they only switch in on resisted moves. Easy as pie.

This week's winner is watermess with their Moltres + Jirachi core

this week is....

GSC Belly Drum Snorlax!

Snorlax @ Leftovers
- Belly Drum
- Body Slam / Return
- Earthquake / Lovely Kiss
- Rest

go nuts

Skarmory @ Leftovers
- Drill Peck
- Curse
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Curse will shore up Skarmory's defenses where at only +1, even Return misses the 3hko through Leftovers. Rest is self-explanatory, Drill Peck its best attacking move. Sleep Talk is just a paranoia move against Lovely Kiss, where only several consecutive Drill Peck rolls through long Lovely Kiss sleep can be considered actively bad.

Quick edit: If you want to use the standard Skarmory set instead, just run Misdreavus as a teammate. With the set restrictions of the challenge, as soon as Snorlax reveals Lovely Kiss and puts anything to sleep, you know that Misdreavus will hard wall it. Until then, Skarmory is the safe switch-in.

Dragonite @ Leftovers
Ability: None
- Reflect
- Haze
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Skarmory loses to BD + Fire Blast Snorlax (which is not that uncommon).
This is the closest thing to a BD Snorlax counter in the game.

Reflects protects you from Snorlax attacks and Haze removes the BD boost.

This Dragonite set was also featured once in one of the most famous GSC SPL games, although it is generally better with body slam or dragonbreath instead of Sleep Talk, which still counters BDlax.

The answer to BD Lax is by using any Explosion pokemon but that's too easy.

The combination of Misdreavus + Skarmory could work here. If Snorlax has Fire Blast, then Misdreavus could easily come in and catch it with confuse ray or perish trap since it takes little damage from it. If Snorlax has Earthquake, Skarmory could easily come in and phase it away. If Snorlax is all out 3 Attack + Belly Drum for some reason, perish song should still stop the bleeding for a little while and keep Snorlax from getting off another full power Belly Drum without putting itself at low health.

Skarmory @ Leftovers
- Whirlwind
- Drill Peck
- Rest
- Curse

Misdreavus @ Leftovers
- Mean Look
- Perish Song
- Protect
- Confuse Ray
edit: Well... didn't notice that question frog put in an edit but made the post already so w/e

Here's an EXTREMELY janky way to stop it that nobody would see coming. You could use a really bad physical Jynx set that uses a combination of Lovely Kiss, Psych Up, and Submission to bring it down to size. That is if the opponent is not already forfeiting after seeing a super buff Jynx staring him down. Watch as their sleeping Snorlax crumbles to a +6 Submission.

+6 Jynx Submission vs. Snorlax: 399-470 (76.2 - 89.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Jynx @ Leftovers
- Ice Beam
- Lovely Kiss
- Psych Up
- Submission

don't be a pussy just click explosion

if u lack the balls for that, I propose Aerodactyl.

Immune to EQ, shrugs off Fire Blast, Talk for Kiss, resists Normal, even still outspeeds after 2 Curses.
Aerodactyl @ Leftovers
Ability: None
Hidden Power: Rock
IVs: 22 HP / 26 Atk / 24 Def
- Sleep Talk
- Rest
- Curse
- Hidden Power [Rock]

Calcs:
+6 Leftovers Snorlax Body Slam vs. +1 Leftovers Aerodactyl: 137 - 162 (38.6 - 45.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers
+6 Leftovers Snorlax Body Slam vs. +2 Leftovers Aerodactyl: 102 - 121 (28.7 - 34.1%) -- 99.3% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers
+1 Leftovers Aerodactyl Hidden Power Rock vs. Leftovers Snorlax: 151 - 178 (28.9 - 34%) -- 99.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers
+2 Leftovers Aerodactyl Hidden Power Rock vs. Leftovers Snorlax: 201 - 237 (38.4 - 45.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftover

Clefable @ Leftovers
- Encore
- Return
- Belly Drum
- Fire Blast/Moonlight

Looks like I might be a tad late on this one but this Clefable set can lock Lax into belly drum, giving itself the opportunity to turn the tables by setting up its own belly drum sweep. This works particularly well if the Drumlax has already slept your normal resist the turn before.
