Yeah this is nasty, Baxcalibur was a very good OU Pokémon and now because of usage it's down to UU. I think it'll be problematic to stop and probably one of the highest usage Pokemon in UU. I think Lokix in UU will also be top usage as well. Excited to see how UU plays out now that Espartha is quickbanned.

So Espathra is this gens first BL mon? Wow! I have a feeling it'll end up back in OU next month...we'll see

Man. Pelipper missed rising by 0.009%. That is so close. I don't know if I feel bad that it didn't quite make it into a tier where it gets more respect, or happy that it gets to stay in UU where it is much more dangerous.
I have little doubt it will spend the majority of the generation in OU especially when it gets its abusers back.

Been trending this way for a while but really interesting note re: power creep is that there are now more psuedos (Baxcalibur, Hydreigon, Salamence, Tyranitar) in UU than in OU. 4 Protosynthesis paradoxes in UU > 2 in OU and Flutter Mane banned from standard. High stats + solid STAB combos are no longer a guarantee of anything and haven't been in at least a generation now truthfully.

Counterpoint:
4 Quark Drive paradoxes in OU > 2 in UU (coincidentally enough the ones based on Hydreigon and Tyranitar) and Iron Bundle banned from standard.

Part of this may be due to the sheer abundance of mons, but I'm also curious how much min/maxing has been a factor if at all.

Oftentimes, high BST mons have well-rounded stats, even stats they don't use or care much about. But in the same vein as how some Megas like M-Beedrill reduced SpA to get "more" than a 100 BST increase, the hyper optimal spreads of mons like Roaring Moon, Ting Lu, and Dondozo give them more value than BST suggests. Gyarados doesn't need SpA; if you lower that from 60 to 45, then additionally up its BST from 540 to 570, that makes a big difference.

So they gave Roaring Moon and Ting Lu dirt poor SpA, and Ting Lu and Dondozo insane HP + a defense rather than an insane two defenses but low HP. Also terrible speed to boot. Great Tusk isn't quite as min-maxed but still very much so for a high stat mon. As are others. The strongest Ultra Beasts were an experiment in this too.

is it possible to make a mixed attacker thats good anymore or does the hyper optimization of mons trend against that? the only one that can be mixed rn is iron valiant in ou it seems

Mixed attackers were at their peak in DP (Infernape, Lucario, some Salamence) and have largely faded out as defensive cores have gotten more advanced and harder to break. Iron Valiant is something of a relic in that it has a definitively DP-esque stat spread but even despite that Valiant's best sets in OU are the ones where it commits to being either a physical or special attacker. It's simply more consistent and simplifies the teambuilding process even as it makes it a bit less interesting, at least IMO.

Pheromosa on introduction seemed like a re-hash of Deoxys-N. Even the lesser UBs like Xurkitree, Guzzlord, and Stakataka still had obscene spreads that were deliberately mitigated by other factors be it in typing or lack of movepool.

All-rounders in the vein of the earlier psuedos e.g. Tyranitar, Metagross and mythicals e.g. Celebi have largely been phased out in GameFreak's designs which reflect how obsolete they've become in singles play over the years. Even more recent mythicals which traditionally followed the 100/100/100 format are no longer the norm. Marshadow has a pretty standard sweeper spread albeit with absurd typing and signature move, Zeraora is an absurdly fast attacker, Zarude (less so) is a bulky attacker with a neat Speed tier, and Melmetal is an enormous physical tank. Celebi, Rachi, even Mew in some metas have fallen from top level play due to competitive becoming increasingly focused around specialists. The rare exceptions of this are in the case of mons with absurd breaking potential (e.g. Victini) and endless utility (Mew.) You now tend to find this sort of mon around contemporary RUs e.g. in Gen 8.
