Movie:
Shadow (2018)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
Description: Another praiseworthy wuxia film gracing us from China, Shadow is an action/drama with stunning visuals and political intrigue surrounding the goings-on of the city of Jingzhou. We learn that prior to the onset of the story, two neighbouring kingdoms competed for control of the city in the form of a duel between two of their best warriors. The loser of the duel (Ziyu) challenges Yang Cang (the winner) to a rematch without his kingdom's permission and is stripped of his rank and authority by the kingdom's cowardly ruler. Afterwards, it is revealed that Ziyu is not the real Ziyu, but a look-alike adopted at a young age due to his uncanny resemblance and potential use as his "shadow" (hence the title inspiration) - the real Ziyu was nearly fatally wounded in the original duel and is recuperating in a cave while plotting the recapture of Jingzhou.

While the story is well-written, the immediate draw of the film is its visual aesthetic. The entire movie is shot with a filter that dulls the majority of the natural colours and renders characters and backdrops in near black and white. In addition, much of the dialogue is soft spoken making the whole experience nearly hypnotic at times. A very strong title for fans of cinematography and action alike!

Movie:
The Foreigner (2017)
Genre: Action, Thriller
IMDb Synopsis: A humble businessman with a buried past seeks justice when his daughter is killed in an act of terrorism. A cat-and-mouse conflict ensues with a government official, whose past may hold clues to the killers' identities.

Movie:
Source Code
Genre: Sci-Fi
Description: Groundhog Day but with high stakes. Source Code presents an incredibly thrilling situation: What if you died, but you had the chance to stop an event that killed hundreds? It stars Jake Gyllenhaal so you know it's a good movie.

Movie:
Incendies
Genre(s): War, Thriller, Mystery
Description: Before he did Blade Runner 2049, before he did Arrival, before he did Sicario, Denis Villeneuve made Incendies. The film's title is French for "Scorched" and based on a play that in turn was based in part on a real person's experience in the Lebanese Civil War. I don't want to say too much more about the plot, but I'll just say this is probably my favorite Villeneuve film of the 4/6 I've seen.

Television

#Celestial
Show:
Hell's Kitchen
Genre: Reality
Description: A show known for Gordon Ramsay yelling at cooks in a kitchen, the show is much more than that and truly shines. It's a great look into what it takes to run a high end restaurant. From preparing foods for a dinner service, to being able to work together with multiple chefs, to being able to deliver multiple different dishes simultaneously and more. Don't want to give too much away here, so definitely watch it if you haven't yet!

%Fragments
Show:
Into the Badlands
Genre: Drama, Action
Description: In a dystopian future, civilization has resorted to a feudal landscape where factions are led by rival barons. A prestigious warrior named Sunny aims to escape the Badlands with the help of M.K., a strange and mysteriously powerful teenage boy. One of the best martial arts-based dramas I've seen, it's got plenty of action, drama, comedy, and even heartbreak.

Bondie
Show:
Toast of London
Genre: Comedy, Sitcom
Description: Written by Arthur Matthews and Matt Berry, starring Matt Berry as the lead character Steven Toast, an actor living in London with his best friend Ed. A very British comedy following Toast through his unsuccessful acting career and love life.

Movies

#Celestial
Film:
Wet Hot American Summer
Genre: Indie, Comedy
Description: An absolute classic film about the last day of summer camp. Stars tons of actors before they became nearly as big as they are today (don't want to spoil the surprise of who here) and a definite must watch for casual fun by anyone who hasn't yet watched it.

#Soft Flex
Film:
Pacific Rim
Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Description: Earth is rocked by the arrival of Kaiju (giant monsters) via an interdimensional rift in its Pacific Rim (see what they did there?). In response, humankind develops Jaegers (big robots) to combat them and preserve life as they know it. Honestly, it's robots punching monsters - you can sign up for that alone and leave satisfied, but there is JUST enough plot in between punches and explosions to pique one's interest in an overarching extended universe.

What else can I say? It's a fun ride, and one probably best enjoyed on a big screen. My only advice is take your time getting around to seeing the sequel - it's a mess of a movie.

@ Saburo
Film:
The Protector (2005)
Genre: Action, Crime, Drama

Show:
The Legend of Korra
Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure
Description: Everyone says it's not as good as The Last Airbender, which is true, but it's still a really good show. While it's in the Avatar series and features the Avatar after Aang, Korra is its own, more mature show and you should approach it as such, not expecting more of The Last Airbender.

Movies

#Celestial
Film:
Batman Begins
Genre: Action, Adventure
Description: Often overlooked in the shadow of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, the initiation of Nolan's series is one that quite a few actually consider to be the best of the trilogy. While I won't go so far as to say that, I will say that it lays down the roots wonderfully for the series and stands out as one of Cillian Murphy's best performances.

#Soft Flex
Film:
Bumblebee
Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Description:
It took approximately 1 minute and 30 seconds to realize this movie was destined to surpass the mess that Michael Bay made of the Transformers franchise in his five (yes, FIVE, somehow) live-action films. The action begins on Cybertron and in its opening moments, long-time fans of the series should be able to recognize classic Autobots/Decepticons without ever needing to hear their names. The bulk of the picture follows plucky, yet troubled teen Charlie and her discovery of the battered Bumblebee on Earth some time after his landing. Hailee Steinfeld makes for a likeable human focal point within the story and even contributes on the movie's soundtrack!

I put off watching this film for two years after having had enough of watching Bay butcher the franchise I loved while growing up (I even skipped his last attempt altogether), but was in the mood for an action/sci-fi picture yesterday and was more than pleasantly surprised. The action is a good bit of fun and there's plenty of subtle nostalgia/throwbacks for fans to pick up on!

Almost Famous
Genre: Coming-of-age, Comedy
Description: A story of a teenage kid travelling the U.S. with a rock band, falling in love, living the lifestyle, and trying to write for Rolling Stone. It's a fantastic film, one that will warm your heart and rock your socks.

%IWouldPreferNotTo
Film:
Venom
Genre: Superhero/Antihero
Description: Tom Hardy as Venom, the Spider-Man villain/antihero. This film isn't that amazing as a superhero film (it's pretty generic and there's some rough action moments), but I highly recommend watching it in the lens of a part horror, part romantic comedy.

Television

#Soft Flex
Show:
Cobra Kai
Genre: Action, Comedy, Drama
Description: Set approximately 30 years after The Karate Kid, Cobra Kai feels like a true sequel to the original film. The story follows a middle-aged Daniel and Johnny with the former maintaining a healthy work/family balance, while the latter has been struggling through life since his story left off. After a series of misfortunes, Johnny is inspired to revive his infamous dojo, Cobra Kai, much to Daniel's dismay, which sparks the old rivalry between them.

I went in with mild expectations and was met with a blast of nostalgia I didn't know I needed. The series has no shortage of familiar characters making cameos, props, music, set pieces, flashbacks and a healthy dose of cheese! If you enjoyed The Karate Kid at any point in life, I have a feeling you'll find something you love within this series - check it out!

Film:
True Grit (2010)
Genre: Drama, Western
Description: This film is a remake of the classic 1969 John Wayne western, and I'll admit up front I have yet to see the original (I will someday), but I can fully vouch for the quality of this picture on its own! The story is simple and easy to follow, while the characters are colourful and fun to watch interact. In particular, a young Hailee Steinfeld stands out in her big screen debut as Mattie Ross - she's a fast-talking, peppy, driven girl who gives her veteran acting coworkers a run for their money.

Genre: Comedy, Animation, Adventure
Description: Join a ragtag crew consisting of the former heavyweight champion of the world, his adopted daughter, the ghost of a nobleman from the 1800's and a man-turned-pigeon as they muddle their way through clearing up unsolved situations together. I wish I'd discovered this series sooner, as I'm a big fan of silly, deadpan humour. And although the series was cancelled back in September, there are 4 glorious seasons to revisit with most episodes only running 10-11 minutes - perfect for filling up gaps in your day when you don't have enough time for hour-long dramas or feature-length films!

Film:
Wonder Woman 1984
Genre: Superhero/Comic Book
Description: The follow-up to the 2017 hit Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman 1984 takes a little while to get going, but picks it up and finishes strong. The theme resonates well and it packs much of the fun and action present in the 2017 original film.

#Soft Flex
Film:
Detroit Rock City
Genre: Comedy, Music
Description: A coming-of-age comedy following four rebellious youth and their misadventures as they make their way to Cobo Hall, Detroit to see their (as well as my ;]) favourite band - KISS! Shortly after the onset of the movie, our leading group of friends hit a snag when one of their mothers (the hardass, religiously-fanatical one - go figure!) discovers their four concert tickets while doing laundry. After pulling her son out of school, she burns the tickets and sends him off to boarding school, leaving it up to the others to bust him out, make their way to the big city and come up with a contingency plan along the way.

The soundtrack in particular will appeal to rock and metal enthusiasts, as it's comprised of about 50% KISS and 50% other legendary bands from the 70's/80's. The rest of the film is hilarious, provocative, occasionally heartfelt and a must-watch for comedy/music enthusiasts alike!

Film:
A Simple Favor
Genre: Comedy, Crime, Mystery
Description: Stephanie (Anna Kendrick), an overachieving, underappreciated, single mom who runs a parenting vlog befriends (somewhat by accident) Emily (Blake Lively), a fellow mother of a child in her kid's class. One day, Emily goes missing and due to her somewhat brash and off-putting demeanor, Stephanie decides it's her responsibility to dig into the nature of her disappearance since no one else is likely to volunteer.

I wasn't expecting much going in, but the way the mystery unravels is solidly entertaining and Anna Kendrick is hilarious in her role. Worth a watch for fans of thrillers and mysteries that border on becoming black comedies without ever quite crossing the line.

Description: Sometimes you gotta go to the classics. Overshadowed by The Sopranos during its original run, it's now held up next to it (along with Breaking Bad) as possibly the best drama out there. I can't really undersell this show's reception critically. Every season takes a look at a different institution within Baltimore, from the drug trade to the political system to the media. The creators were dedicated to realism, and several former police officers have minor roles, including a former commissioner of the Baltimore police. A significant number of characters on both sides of the law are based off of real people, and several of these inspirations appear in other roles. Normally I don't go to trailers, but this is one of the best I've ever seen:

#Buffy
Film:
Speed Racer
Genre: Action, Comedy, Sports
Description: One of my personal favorite films, Speed Racer is a fun, action packed film with a retro style of coloring combined with futuristic technologies. Based on the comic (and later on TV series), the film's protagonist, Speed, must balance his family history and business with his own personal goals and relationship as he competes on the world's racing circuit. The Wachowskis' work is fantastic (completely different from The Matrix and Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon and Emile Hirsch are all perfectly cast.

Genre: Comedy, Crime, Drama
Description: A pair of upper-class high schoolers (Lily, an only child from a broken family and Amanda, an emotionless teen with pending animal cruelty charges following the unlawful euthanization of her crippled horse) reconnect after letting their friendship dwindle years prior. It's hard to tiptoe around the details of the rather simple (but not unentertaining) plot without spoiling anything, but suffice it to say they enter into an agreement to carry out a rather heavy task with the help of a third party.

The strength of the movie is not in the story so much as it is the performances by the two girls. Their chemistry is unique, particularly in the way they view other characters in the film. This was also one of the very last films Anton Yelchin appeared in before his untimely passing.

She takes matters into her own hands, teaming up with a very unusual neighbour (Elijah Wood) along the way, and together muddle their way through the early steps of an amateur private investigation before realizing too late that they've bitten off more than they can chew. Description: Technically a spin off from Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel stands as a good show of its own volition and can be watched as a standalone series (though I would highly recommend watching it in concert with Buffy). This show is full of action, dark humor at times, relationships and demons as well as plenty of other supernatural things.

Description: After Netflix recently dropped the first five seasons, I decided to dip my toe in for an episode or 2 in between shows and ended up binging all five seasons in about 6 days. Film:
Galveston
Genre: Crime, Drama
Description: Galveston follows a retiring hitman in the wake of a recent terminal illness diagnosis. Unbeknownst to him, he is set up by his former employer and narrowly escapes with a teenaged prostitute named Rocky who he reluctantly agrees to shelter while they run for their lives. To complicate things, Rocky convinces him to let her rescue her younger sister from an abusive household along the way.

The film is billed as an action revenge thriller, but I don't believe that to be a fair or accurate description of what this picture is really about. The film is not outstandingly rated on many mainstream sites and I believe that to be due to the confusing nature of the various synopses found around the web. There are powerful acting moments woven between the various subplots and reveals, and they are what makes this film stand out in my opinion. NOT recommended for younger audiences or those who shy away from darker themes.

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)

Darius ends up spending her time with Kenneth (Mark Duplass), the man who believes that he has built a time machine. The closer they become and the more they understand about each other, the less clear it becomes whether Kenneth is just crazy or if he actually is going to successfully travel back in time.

Mortal Kombat (1995)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Description: To commemorate the soon-to-be-released, seemingly-faithful sequel in April of this year that fans have been waiting for for the past 25, I pay tribute this week to the film my younger self called my favourite movie for the decade prior to Kung Fu Hustle's release!

I was as big a fan of this movie as I was terrible at the games it was based on, and I could not even begin to accurately predict how many times I've seen it over the years. Easily one of the best video game adaptations on the big screen, and for sure my favourite, this movie is an epic cheesefest of a time. The characters they chose to include look accurate to their game counterparts, the action is entertaining despite the dated special effects and it's just an easy movie to get into when you don't feel like thinking too hard for an afternoon.

Plus, the greatest movie theme song of all times! Just don't go expecting great things from its technical sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation...

Genre: Game Show, Comedy
Description: MXC was a goofy, yet addicting, Spike TV "original" that aired in the mid-2000's. It repackaged footage from the late 80's Japanese game show Takeshi's Castle and dubbed over the original audio with silly/crude dialogue and sound effects. Since the original clips were old, producers were able to bring its audience the best highlights of the original game show over its run to maximize the hilarity. The courses and stunts set the tone for similar game shows in the future such as Wipeout and American Ninja Warrior.

At the time of this post, the film is available on Netflix but it appears to be a director's cut of sorts. There is a version(s) available elsewhere that, if available to you, contains extra scenes that add to the character development and bond between the two protagonist stars. I do, however, see arguments for and against the exclusion of them in the slightly abbreviated release (still a great film in either case!).

A solid, recent thriller starring Sarah Paulson (the mother) who, as usual, shines in the thriller genre. I will say that the biggest twist is perhaps on the predictable side, but I found surprises in places I didn't expect to find them, which, coupled with Sarah's performance, made it a very worthwhile watch (especially since the film is only an hour and a half). This is one of my favourite sitcoms that didn't get enough recognition during its original run on Spike TV due to poor marketing (in my opinion). Season 3 falls a little flat compared to the strong opening seasons of the show due to odd casting decisions but the show is very bingeable and rewatchable even 10 years later - Thad Castle (Alan Ritchson) absolutely steals the show every episode and it's a crying shame that he isn't featured in more movies and shows by this point.
