Timed battle (Glitch?/Hack?/Exploit?)

[Nerdling]

I was playing a game just now, and was trouncing my opponent quite spectacularly. When I got him down to his last pokemon, a muk, he just didn't make a move. His timer appeared to be stuck at 5:00 permanantly, because for the next five or so minutes, nothing happened. He proceeded to taunt me, obviously aware of the fact that he could simply stall me out by not making am move. I eventually disconnected.

Is this some sort of glitch/hack/exploit that causes the timer to stop functioning? If not, why did this occur.
