Project Threats to OU Cores v3: Round 7 1/2: short hiatus

approved by Jordy
op mostly from v1 & v2

Currently Round 7 1/2: short hiatus :sm/slaking:

V1,V2
Pokemon rely on offensive and defensive synergy to function. Cores of Pokemon are units within teams that are built specifically to take advantage of these synergies between Pokemon. Many teams are built around such cores. The premise of this thread is to analyse the best threats to OU cores, with the aim to support teambuilding by providing a list of cores that may threaten your team and suggest viable Pokémon that can be added in response. If anyone has suggestions for cores you can PM me.

Procedure:
1. Each round I will post a core of 2 Pokemon, these will be proven cores in the meta that are difficult to handle. Rounds will last about 5 days.
2. Posters will have the chance to post threats to the core.
This is one Pokemon that can counter/check at least one member of the core, while not being itself countered by either member.
Example: Mamoswine is a threat to the core of defensive Landorus-Therian + AV Magearna, because it can outspeed and OHKO both Pokémon with its STAB moves.
3. At the end of the round, I will archive all viable threats listed in the below post and post a new core, highlighting the most effective and creative threats, as well as explaining why others don't make the cut.

Rules:
1. Please follow up your reservations in a timely fashion. I will allow 48 hours after a reservation to make the post. After 2 days are up, if you have not made your post, then someone else may reserve that Pokemon.
2. Please only post Pokemon that are viable in OU and don't post sets specifically for this core, additionally your threat should not be complete deadweight against teams that do not feature the specific core.
2.1. This does not mean that you can't submit Pokemon that are not on the viability rankings, I will make exceptions to certain unranked Pokemon I deem viable enough to archive.
3. Each poster may post up to 2 threats. Each set counts as a different threat.
4. When posting, please explain yourself. Calcs are not necessary, but please list more reasons than something simple like type synergy. Be descriptive so that other posters and I can fully understand your reasoning behind your nomination. Please paste the full set of your threat, moves, EVs, ability, Showdown importable is preferred.
5. Different sets can be posted for the same Pokemon so long as they serve a different purpose from the other set.
6. Be respectful to others. Constructive criticism is allowed, as long as it is done in a proper and non-hostile manner.

Clarifications Regarding Threats:
A threat to the core must check or counter at least one member and cannot be countered by the other. A threat does not necessarily need to be able to switch into both members of the core, but it should be difficult/annoying to switch into for the members of the core. Of course, the biggest threats can counter both members of the core.

> Pokémon A checks Pokémon B if, when Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.
> Addtionally, Pokemon A also checks Pokemon B if, Pokemon A is able to deal with a particular set of Pokemon B, and Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, while Pokemon B is using that particular set, then Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.
Example: Tangrowth can switch into defensive Landorus-Therian without much fear, but is unable to deal with Flyinium Z variants of Landorus-Therian.
> Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

Threats Archive

Below are the threats we have analysed so far, clicking on the core will reveal icons for the Pokémon that were identified as threats. There's also a link to where the core was posted, so you can scroll down below that post and find the specific threatening set, in the case it is not immediately obvious.

Round 1 Core: Reuniclus + Toxapex

Welcome to Threats to OU Cores: Version 3! We're going to jump right into as we don't want to waste time seeing as USM OU's days are numbered!! We are going to kick off this thread with a well-known balance core that consists of Reuniclus and Toxapex! Reuniclus especially with it's double dance set heavily profits from toxic spikes. Toxapex can provide those but it does so much more! The defensive synergy of those two is astonishing and is sometimes overwhelming on it's own because they're just too fat to break. However Reuni is not just an exceptional wall but an excellent defensive sweeper that punishes teams extremely well that didn't specifically prepare for it. If paired with tspikes and acid armor as the 4th move about half the tier turns into set-up fodder. Furthermore OLT is going on right now and Reuni always sees a spike in usage during the ladder tournament because it punishes unprepared teams exceptionally well. This makes ReuniPex the perfect core for Round 1!
Reuniclus @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 212 Def / 44 Spe
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Acid Armor
- Psyshock
- Recover

Toxapex @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Haze
- Recover
- Toxic Spikes

As always all posts are appreciated! But please try to post only OU viable Pokémon and don't post sets specifically for this core. Additionally, your threat should not be complete deadweight against teams that do not feature Reuniclus and Toxapex. Other than that have a great day everyone and let's break this core!

Choice Band Tapu Bulu

Tapu Bulu @ Choice Band
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 84 HP / 248 Atk / 176 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Wood Hammer
- Horn Leech
- Superpower
- Stone Edge

Bulu outspeeds and OHKOs both mons with Wood Hammer. Additionally, Bulu can switch in to an unboosted Reuniclus' Psyshock (witch does around 25%), and only fears a Scald burn from Pex.

Calcs VS
:

0 SpA Reuniclus Psyshock vs. 84 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu: 93-111 (30.7 - 36.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
248+ Atk Choice Band Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 212+ Def Reuniclus in Grassy Terrain: 435-513 (102.5 - 120.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Calcs VS
:

0 SpA Toxapex Scald vs. 84 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Bulu: 27-33 (8.9 - 10.9%) -- possibly the worst move ever
248+ Atk Choice Band Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Toxapex in Grassy Terrain: 336-396 (110.5 - 130.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Greninja @ Metronome
Ability: Protean
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Gunk Shot
- Hidden Power Fire
- Spikes

Metronome + Dark Pulse allows Greninja to muscle through Reuniclus even after a Calm Mind boost, especially since Reuniclus cannot touch Greninja. It also allows it to potentially break through Toxapex after a few uses. I guess you could also just Extrasensory but that's only for Toxapex and the rare Mega Venusaur or Amoonguss.
0: 252 SpA Greninja Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 63-75 (20.7 - 24.6%) -- not a KO
1: 252 SpA Metronome Greninja Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 76-90 (25 - 29.6%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Black Sludge recovery
2: 252 SpA Metronome Greninja Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 88-105 (28.9 - 34.5%) -- not a KO
3: 252 SpA Metronome Greninja Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 101-120 (33.2 - 39.4%) -- not a KO
4: 252 SpA Metronome Greninja Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 113-135 (37.1 - 44.4%) -- not a KO
5: 252 SpA Metronome Greninja Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 126-150 (41.4 - 49.3%) -- not a KO

Hydreigon @ Metronome
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 244 SpA / 32 SpD / 232 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dark Pulse
- Earth Power
- Substitute
- Roost

Hydreigon with Metronome destroys this core rather easily after setting up Substitute. With Substitute it basically allows Hydreigon to be able to beat pex with Earth Power since Toxapex cannot poison it due to Hydreigon levitating and not be affected from Toxic Spikes , and also has a chance at bringing down the special defense of Toxapex as Earth Power gets stronger because of Metronome. Hydreigon will always beat Reuniclus since it is immune to Psychic thanks to its dark typing, and the only thing Reuniclus can do is set up , however, Hydreigon will always be coming in on Reuni before it sets up to much and pressuring it due to Dark Pulse + Metronome.

Reuniclus @ Ghostium Z
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 232 HP / 196 Def / 80 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psyshock
- Shadow Ball
- Calm Mind
- Recover

Ironically enough, Ghostium Reuni does really well against this core, being able to come into and outspeed Reuni, setting up and nuking it with Z Shadow Ball at just the right time. Obviously, this set also pivots into Pex without fear and can force situations where it gets +1, then Psyshocks on Haze and forces out Pex because of the speed. Most of the threats posted are just standard offensive mons that can KO both members of the core, but many of them are terrified of switching into Toxapex, particularly being afraid of Scald burns, or they're weak to Toxic Spikes. Reuniclus has none of these fears and can come in on both members of the core without fear and wreak havoc.

In general, Ghostium Reuni is a tech that I usually use on Reuni teams that are weak to Zam and Lele so that there's an easy way to remove them for the rest of the team, but it's pretty hard to fit onto teams most of the time because of how terrible being walled by Gren/TTar is.

hoopa_unbound_by_evievsart_dbdfd9e-fullview.png
Hoopa-Unbound @ Darkinium Z
Ability: Magician
EVs: 32 HP / 224 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Dark Pulse
- Psychic
- Focus Blast

Hoopa-U uses Reuniclus as set-up fodder and can safely set-up infront of it as it is immune to Reuni's stab psyshock due to its dark typing.
Furthermore Hoopa-U can also heavily damage Toxapex due to its high SpAtt stat and can easily 2 ohko Pex.
Hoopa-U in general is a big threat to balance as most balance teams have to play around this threat, as its breaking potential with all its sets is really high.

Calcs:

224 SpA Hoopa-Unbound Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Reuniclus: 360-426 (84.9 - 100.4%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery
224 SpA Hoopa-Unbound Black Hole Eclipse (160 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Reuniclus: 720-848 (169.8 - 200%) -- guaranteed OHKO

224 SpA Hoopa-Unbound Dark Pulse vs. +1 252 HP / 0 SpD Reuniclus: 240-284 (56.6 - 66.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
224 SpA Hoopa-Unbound Black Hole Eclipse (160 BP) vs. +1 252 HP / 0 SpD Reuniclus: 480-566 (113.2 - 133.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

224 SpA Hoopa-Unbound Black Hole Eclipse (160 BP) vs. +2 252 HP / 0 SpD Reuniclus: 360-426 (84.9 - 100.4%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery

224 SpA Hoopa-Unbound Psychic vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 200-236 (65.7 - 77.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery
224 SpA Hoopa-Unbound Black Hole Eclipse (160 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 177-208 (58.2 - 68.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery

0 SpA Toxapex Scald vs. 32 HP / 0 SpD Hoopa-Unbound: 42-51 (13.5 - 16.5%) -- possible 6HKO after Stealth Rock

At +2 destroys the entire core, though it must be wary of a burn from Toxapex's Scald.

Tapu Lele @ Fightinium Z
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psyshock
- Moonblast
- Focus Blast
- Calm Mind

Lele is always a menace to bulky teams and this core is no exception. It slaps Pex really hard and uses Reuni as setup fodder. I recommend Psyshock here to win the CM war, but if you’re feeling lucky and Moonblast drops that SpA, you’re also good.

Magearna @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 248 HP / 28 Def / 232 SpD
IVs: 6 Spe
Calm Nature
- Flash Cannon / Fleur Cannon
- Volt Switch
- Heart Swap
- Pain Split

Mrs Steal Your Boosts is here to, well, steal your boosts. With Heart Swap, Magearna renders this core pretty much useless; Reuni's boosting moves are a liability, Pex can't Haze away any stolen Calm Minds without eating a boosted Volt Switch, and she's immune to TSpikes just as a final "Fuck you." It's admittedly a war of attrition, but Mag will always stall out their Recovers with Pain Split and win 1 v 1. Or 1 v 2, in this case.

Mawile @ Mawilite

EVs: 92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Play Rough
- Sucker Punch
- Knock Off

Think I'll let the calcs speak for this one.

252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 212+ Def Reuniclus: 360-424 (84.9 - 100%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Toxapex: 277-326 (91.1 - 107.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Toxapex @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Haze
- Recover
- Toxic Spikes

the mentioned reuniclus set thrives from toxic spikes being up as without them it cannot beat dark types as they are bound to crit eventually, so naturally the most common poison type in ou would be a problem being able to pivot in and out and absorb them for its dark type teammates to remain unstatused throughout the match meaning they can more reliably handle the reuniclus

Tapu Fini @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 68 SpD / 192 Spe
Calm Nature
- Taunt
- Nature Madness
- Moonblast / Scald
- Defog / Whirpool

Taunt + Nature Madness Tapu Fini is a solid answer against Toxapex because it can Defog Toxik Spikes or Trap Toxapex and it's immunizes it from ScaldBurn thanks to Misty Terrain. Also Taunt prevent set-up of Reuniclus and Nature Madness is the best option for put some damage on it.

Good work everyone, this first round has been very promising. The core offered to be taken down by some uncontentional breakers and y'all sure didn't slack  I won't always do notes for every single mon that's getting submitted but to start this thread off strong first round is an exception!
there have been a lot of good submission so I will choose three that I rate to be the most efficient and safest to deal with this core!
Threats of the Round:

:Shadow Ball Reuniclus is simply unbeatable for this core. It will prove an amazing switchin during the game by not only countering both pokemon but by using them as set-up fodder too. Great submission
:Metronome Hydreigon is very interesting. Immunity to tspikes, recovery to fend off scaldburns and free metronome-stacking opportunities. The set works perfectly against this core, however it is questionable if it would work well in an actual team vs team environment. But some people really have an affinity to not using darkresists which could make this an interesting cteam-mon.
:BandBulu does not necessarily want to come in on tspikes and it also doesn't want to come in on a reuni on +2. But in a 1v2 scenario it clicks 1 button 2 times and the core gets blown to hell and back. Easy-to-execute strategies are very valuable which grants this mon threat of the round as well.

Additional Notes:

:Metronome Greninja bases on the same idea as metronome Hydreigon but tspikes are it's doom. Also it needs quite some time to stack up it's power which lets pex fish for burns. Furthermore in a real scenario I believe that specs-ninja just has the edge over this one in any real battle scenario.
:Hoopa-U was the closest to being a threat of the round as well. It's strong and would usually crush this core but in a real scenario it's a lot more prone to getting widdled down. tspikes or a random scald burn could then potentially open leeway for the opponent. A very good submission though, thank you!
:Gallade-Mega fears scald-burns as was already stated and can't come in on a reuniclus that just acid armor'ed as well. A good threat but not quite as safe as some other submissions.
:Tapu Lele cannot come in on reuniclus when tspikes are up of it pex fished a scaldburn. Just like medi it doesn't beat reuni when it comes in on it and fears status which is troublesome. It is a lot easier to fit on teams than mmedi though so thanks for this.
:The submitted magearna-set can only vswitch against toxapex and while it is a good counter against reuniclus it gives pex opportunities to throw up tspikes and relies on teammembers to beat it as long as it didn't steal a +6 spA from reuni.
: Mawile can't come in on a reuni that just got to +2 and fears scald burns. Also in a real scenario pex can predict a +0 knoff and then proceed to wall it as it hazes. Can definitly tear this core apart in some scenarios though.
:It's true that pex is the most effective tspike-remover but it requires to be played alongside a dark-type. In this thread we're searching for specific mons and not for team-structures so sadly it is not a fitting submission.
:Fini offers status-immunity to other teammembers but itself it is going to take the toxic from tspikes. If that happens it no longer breaks this core. It is annoying to deal with though and it will provide a lot of help against this core in a real environment
Round 2 Core: Pelipper + Ferrothorn

Pelipper @ Damp Rock
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 248 HP / 196 Def / 64 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- U-turn
- Hurricane
- Roost

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 32 Def / 224 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Power Whip
- Gyro Ball
- Stealth Rock
- Spikes

  • This core is the backbone of the most common and best rain teams. When posting threats keep rain abusers in mind as rain is very one-dimensional and focus on what would work best in a real battle scenario! Ferro can deal with a lot of rock and electric types that threaten peli and peli can take care of a lot of fire and fighting types and sometimes is relatively hard to switch into.
  • Try to post only OU viable Pokémon and don't post sets specifically for this core. Additionally, your threat should not be complete deadweight against teams that do not feature Pelipper + Ferrothorn. Keep in mind what pokemon are commonly paired with those two! Have a great day everyone!

Mega Charizard Y

Charizard @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Flamethrower
- Focus Blast
- Solar Beam
- Roost

Mega Charizard Y is a serious threat to this core, as well as to Rain teams in general. Drought removes Drizzle upon switching in, making Pelipper's Scald less powerful as well as forcing Hurricane's accuracy to become 50% for it and Tornadus-T, another standard staple for Rain teams. Flamethrower obliterates Ferrothorn and has a high chance to 2HKO Pelipper in the Sun. Meanwhile, Solar Beam wrecks the rest of Pelipper's teammates, which include Mega Swampert, Manaphy, and Ash-Greninja in the Sun.

Magnezone @ Electrium Z
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Substitute
- Thunderbolt
- Flash Cannon
- Hidden Power Fire

Magnezone once being able to be brought in , can dismantle this core rather easily as it does not like to the take the damage from Scald boosted Pelipper under rain, but will be able to kill Pelipper once it gets a chance to switch into and potentially set up a substitute to scout which mon is gonna be brought in and start wearing them down. Thanks to Magnet Pull Ferrothron gets trapped and cannot do much once Magnezone is behind a substitute besides spamming hazards or try to attempt to break sub which is gonna make it get worn down faster or waste turns of rains.

Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure/Static
EVs: 248 HP / 240 Def / 20 Spe
Bold Nature
- Discharge
- Roost
- Heat Wave
- Defog

Good old wallbird here cleanly OHKOs pelipper and cares very little about what ferrothorn has to throw at it, winning the 1v1 with heat wave regardless of whether or not rain is up. Especially since ferro's already horrible matchup vs zapdos is exacerbated by the lack of leech seed. It even walls the accompanying Tornadus-T and Mega Swampert, though you may need to bring your own ferrothorn or tangrowth or whatever to deal with the potential stone edge pert made possible by this dual hazard ferro.

World’s gayest mon and great against this core and rain teams in general. While Gyro Ball and Hurricane do annoy it, it still outspeeds both and neither OHKOs, allowing Serp to get a leaf storm and dispatch peli and ferro.

Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball / Energy Ball
- Recover

While not exactly the best Pokemon to 1v1 either Pelipper or Ferrothorn, Mega-Alakazam matches spectacularly well into Ferrothorn rain as a whole. First and foremost, Mega-Alakazam is able to copy Swift Swim from Pelipper's teammate(s) and out-speed absolutely everything while posing a tremendous threat offensively due to the Steel-type being Ferrothorn and therefore heavily dented (2hko'd) by any connecting Focus Blast. Energy Ball can be used over Shadow Ball to further better its matchup against rain by one-shotting Mega-Swampert from full, however, Shadow Ball is much more useful, generally speaking.

Magearna @ Fightinium Z
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shift Gear
- Thunderbolt
- Fleur Cannon
- Focus Blast

Magearna is a great check to Ferrothorn as well as Pelipper as these Mons cannot really damage Magearna whereas Magearna can set up Vs them.
It can OHKO Pelipper with Thunderbolt and can KO Ferrothorn with a Combination of Focus Blast and All Out Pummeling.
KOing one of them also gives it a Rise in SpAtt thanks to its Ability in Soul Heart further improving its sweeping potential.

Calcs:
252 SpA Magearna Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 224 SpD Pelipper: 400-472 (123.8 - 146.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 248 HP / 224 SpD Pelipper: 216-255 (66.8 - 78.9%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

0 SpA Pelipper Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Magearna: 51-60 (16.9 - 19.9%) -- guaranteed 6HKO
0 SpA Pelipper Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Magearna in Rain: 109-130 (36.2 - 43.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

252 SpA Magearna Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 232+ SpD Ferrothorn: 174-206 (49.4 - 58.5%) -- 98.8% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Magearna All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 232+ SpD Ferrothorn: 274-324 (77.8 - 92%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Magearna Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 232+ SpD Ferrothorn: 260-306 (73.8 - 86.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Magearna All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 232+ SpD Ferrothorn: 408-482 (115.9 - 136.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Latias-Mega (F) @ Latiasite
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Stored Power
- Calm Mind
- Recover
- Reflect Type

By itself, Mega-Latias does already pose a huge threat to this core, as it doesn't take anything from any of Pelliper's or Ferrothorn's moves (especially since the former lacks Leech Seed or Thunder-Wave) thanks to its enormous bulk (Hurricane and Gyro Ball are at worse a 4 hit KO), allowing it to safely setup Calm Mind. But, with the addition of Reflect Type (and a possible Toxic-Spike setting teammate) , Mega-Latias becomes also able to deal with the other members of most rain teams by copying their typing and thus resisting most of their stabs.
