BDSP Tangrowth

[OVERVIEW]

Tangrowth's Grass typing and physical bulk allow it to counter several dangerous Water-types such as Feraligatr, Crawdaunt, and Rotom-W as well as the dangerous Breloom. Regenerator and Giga Drain keep Tangrowth healthy while it uses utility moves like Knock Off and Sleep Powder to deter the opponent from pivoting around it. Due to its bad special bulk, Tangrowth is very vulnerable to strong special attacks and chip damage, which is why it competes with Poliwrath, which spreads Scald burns, racks up entry hazard damage with Circle Throw, counters Weavile and Mixed Crawdaunt, and checks Infernape. It also faces competition from fellow Grass-type Shaymin, which offers higher speed, letting it check Pokemon like Belly Drum Azumarill, higher special bulk, letting it shrug off Crawdaunt's Sludge bomb, and Aromatherapy while staying healthy with Rest and Natural Cure. Despite this, Tangrowth manages to set itself apart thanks to its superior movepool and higher physical bulk, earning itself a solid role on balance.

[SET]
name: Physically Defensive
move 1: Giga Drain
move 2: Knock Off
move 3: Earthquake / Sleep Powder
move 4: Sludge Bomb
item: No Item
ability: Regenerator
nature: Relaxed Nature
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

Knock Off allows Tangrowth to hit dangerous special attackers and cripple them by getting rid of Heatran, Latios, and Latias's items while OHKOing Alakazam outright. Earthquake expands on Tangrowth's coverage, allowing it to hit Magnezone, Heatran, and Jirachi, while Sleep Powder allows it to put its switch-ins out of commission, further discouraging the opponent from pivoting around it. Sludge bBomb allows Tangrowth to check opposing Grass-types like Breloom, Shaymin, and Rotom-C, this is particularly important against Breloom, as Tangrowth is immune to Spore. It also allows Tangrowth to spread poison around to rack up incremental damage. Tangrowth's lack of an item makes it an excellent Knock Off absorber; it is forced to not run an item because it otherwise can't take a Swords Dance boosted Knock Off from Life Orb Crawdaunt.

Tangrowth generally pairs up with fellow defensive Pokemon that patch its weaknesses. Blissey checks tier monster Latios and other special attackers. Gliscor provides a very good Heatran and Magnezone check while also defogging for Tangrowth, while Tangrowth makes up for Gliscor's weakness to Water-types like Azumarill, Feraligatr, and Rotom-W. Clefable provides an excellent Weavile check and can lure in Swords Dance Scizor and KO it with Flamethrower, as Tangrowth tends to struggle with it. Rotom-W checks Heatran, Mamoswine, Weavile, and Swords Dance Scizor while pivoting Tangrowth in with Volt Switch. Starmie spins entry hazards away, allowing Tangrowth to stay healthy in the face of the powerful physical attackers it needs to check. Tangrowth also pairs very well with fellow Regenerator Pokemon Slowbro, making a Regenerator corethat covers each other's weaknesses thanks to the type synergy; for example, Slowbro checks Infernape, while Tangrowth checks Crawdaunt and Feraligatr.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]

Other Options
=============

Tangrowth sports a myriad of moves that it can experiment with over standard ones; for example, Power Whip can be used over Giga Drain thanks to its higher Base Power, though it lacks the accuracy and healing of Giga Drain. Brick Break can be run to lure in and OHKO Weavile; however, it is generally inferior to Earthquake outside of this matchup. Stun Spore can be run over Sleep Powder to spread paralysis; however, Sleep Powder is generally more impactful. Leech Seed can be used to further punish switch-ins and help Tangrowth stay healthy, but it sacrifices coverage in doing so.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Strong Special Attacks**: Tangrowth's low Special Defense makes it vulnerable to strong special attacks from Pokemon like Alakazam, Latios, and Latias. Furthermore, physical attackers like Garchomp and Crawdaunt can run special coverage for it.

**Flying-Type Pokemon and Coverage**: Staraptor, Brave Bird Skarmory, Air Slash Shaymin, and Togekiss all exert pressure on Tangrowth, forcing it to switch out. This gives them opportunities to fire off strong attacks or set up on the forced switch.

**Ice-Type Pokemon and Coverage**: Weavile and Mamoswine deal a lot of damage to Tangrowth with Icicle Crash and Freeze-Dry, respectively, forcing it out, and exploiting the opportunity to fire off a strong attack. Starmie's Ice beam renders Tangrowth unable to check it, as it deals too much damage to it. Blissey can abuse Tangrowth's passivity and lack of a physical move to set up with Calm Mind or pressure it with Ice Beam.

**Fire-Types**: Infernape's Overheat and Choice Band Flare Blitz and Heatran's Fire-type moves threaten to OHKO Tangrowth, forcing it out. However, neither want to switch into it, as it threatens them with Knock Off and Earthquake.

Tangrowth a is Physical wall sporting the much appreciated Grass-Type which allows Tangrowth's typing and physical bulk allow it to check several dangerous Water-Types in the tier such as Feraligatr, Crawdaunt, (add comma) and Rotom-Wash. Due to a lack of Assault vest in the tier its bad special bulk, (don't compare to other gens/tiers) Tangrowth finds itself very vulnerable to strong Special attacks and chip damage, (add comma) which is why it competes with Shaymin and (tang does not compete with Shaymin, they do different things. Shaymin cannot be switching into Crawdaunt, for instance) with Poliwrath, the former providing a good speed tier, better special defense with similar physical bulk and aromatherapy while the latter which spreads Scald burns, racks up Hazard damage with Circle throw and hardwalls Weavile and Mixed Crawdaunt, checking Infernape all the while staying healthy with RestTalk . (I'd take away the mention of resttalk cause it is simply not as consistent as regen+giga, so tang actually sort of beats it there) Despite this, Tangrowth manages to set itself apart thanks to its superior movepool compared to Shaymin and ability to check Rotom-Wash and Breloom compared to Poliwrath, earning a solid role on Balance/Stall teams but not on Offensive teams due to its passivity. (tang is not good on stall)

[SET COMMENTS]

Tangrowth goes all-out on being physically defensive to sponge as many hits as possible, it uses a Relaxed nature to abuse both its Physical and Special moves to their full effect especially since it's a very slow Pokemon anyway. It utilizes its STAB Giga Drain to check dangerous Water-Types in Feraligatr, Crawdaunt and Rotom-Wash while also staying healthy as it relies on Regenerator to recover lost HP. Sludge bomb allows it to most importantly check the notoriously dangerous Breloom which is made especially easy thanks to its immunity to Spore while also letting it spread Posion and hit opposing Grass-Types like Shaymin and Rotom-Mow. The lack of an item on Tangrowth allows it to live Crawdaunt's Life orb Swords Dance boosted Knock Off and also makes it an excellent sponge for it, while also being an excellent abuser of this move as it allows Tangrowth to punish Pokemon that hate losing their items pivoting around it and allows it to hit Pokemon like the Lati twins. The last move on Tangrowth varies, however it's usually a choice between of Earthquake which expands its coverage to be able to hit Magnezone, Jirachi and Heatran on the switch or the excellent Sleep Powder, which in conjunction with Sludge Bomb allows it to put a Pokemon out of comission while deterring fellow Grass-Types from absorbing the move. (please order this paragraph in the following way: Talk about giga drain countering waters like gatr, azu, rotom-w, and crawdaunt, then talk about knock crippling special attackers like heatran/latios while OHKOing Alakazam, then talk about earthquake hitting tran/zone/rachi and sleep powder punishing switch-ins, then talk about sludge bomb hitting loom, shaymin, rotom-c, and clefable. so essentially go in order of the moves. after that, talk about the necessity for no item due to crawdaunt. i dont think you need to explain the evs or nature at all)

Seeing Tangrowth's defensive nature, it pairs up very well with fellow Regenerator Pokemon Slowbro, providing a Regenerator core between the two while covering each other's weaknesses thanks to the synergy of their types, for example Slowbro checks Infernape while Tangrowth checks Crawdaunt and Feraligatr. Tangrowth generally pairs up with fellow defensive Pokemon that patch out its weaknesses like Blissey which checks tier monster Latios and other Special attackers, Gliscor which provides a very good Heatran and Magnezone check while also defogging for it, Starmie which Rapid Spins Hazards away allowing Tang to say healthy. Tangrowth is best fit on Defensive balance (no such thing as a defensive team, i'd just say balance) teams as stated earlier. mention specifically that gliscor really appreciates tangrowth checking gatr, azu, and crawduant. flamethrower clef is helpful for dealing with SD scizor, as tang can struggle with that set. rotom-w pivots tang in on a whole bunch of stuff, and tang appreciates it dealing with SD Gliscor and heatran.

Tangrowth can utilize items such as Leftovers to provide more longevity. However, this leaves it vulnerable to Crawdaunt's Knock Off. (honestly tang doesn't even get that much from leftovers, i would not even mention it) Tangrowth sports a myriad of moves it can experiment with over standard ones, for example, Power whip can be utilized over Giga drain thanks to its higher damage output, though it lacks the consistency accuracy and healing of Giga drain which makes it less preferred. Brick Break can be ran on Tangrowth in order to lure in and OHKO Weavile, this is usually not worth the moveslot due to Weavile's high damage output and ability to potentially flinch down Tangrowth however, it is generally useless outside of this matchup, making it inconsistent and Stun Spore can be ran as a final move to spread paralysis around. But this is usually unwanted since Stall teams are naturally slow and will not outspeed anything significant even with paralysis. However, Sleep Powder is a generally more impactful status move.

**Strong Special Attacks**: Tangrowth's low Special Defense makes it vulnerable to strong special attacks in the tier due to the lack of Assault vest, this includes from Pokemon like Alakazam, the Lati twins and Mixed Crawdaunt's Sludge Bomb. never say the lati twins, it is always Latios and Latias

**Flying-Type Pokemon and Coverage**: Staraptor, Brave Bird Skarmory, Air slash Shaymin and Togekiss all exert pressure on Tangrowth forcing it to switch out, this gives them opportunities to fire off strong attacks or set up on the forced switch.

**Ice-Type Pokemon and Coverage**: Weavile and Mamoswine deal a lot of damage to Tangrowth with Icicle Crash and Freeze-Dry respectively, forcing it out, exploiting the opportunity to fire off strong attacks on its team. Starmie's Ice beam renders Tangrowth unable to check it as it deals too much damage to it, Blissey abuses Tangrowth's passivity and lack of a physical move to set up Calm mind or to use Ice Beam on it.

**Fire-Types**: Infernape's Overheat or Choice banded Flare Blitz and Heatran threaten to OHKO Tangrowth, forcing it out. However neither wants to switch in vs it as it threatens to Knock their item off or potentially Earthquake them them with Knock Off and Earthquake.

**Chip damage**: Tangrowth mainly relies on Regenerator for recovery. This means that any form of chip damage ranging from pivoting moves in U-turn and Volt switch, Status effects moves like Rotom-Wash's Will-O-Wisp burning it and Hazard damage in Stealth Rock and Spikes will wear it down, making it a lot less reliable at checking what it usually checks.

Shaymin, and Rotom-C
I assume this was you forgetting to move it, but just mention these two in the overview as grass types that tang competes with. both have higher speed, shaymin has useful coverage and better special bulk while rotom-c has the ability to pivot and support with trick

Split this up into multiple sentences. Otherwise, this is leagues better than it was before. 1/2

I believe this was in the context that Sludge bomb allows tang to hit those two actually! But I'll be sure to mention those two in the overview and I'll reword that sentence because it sounds pretty bad

**Strong Special Attacks**: Tangrowth's low Special Defense makes it vulnerable to strong special attacks in the tier from Pokemon like Alakazam, Latios and Latias and Mixed Crawdaunt's Sludge Bomb.

**Ice-Type Pokemon and Coverage**: Weavile and Mamoswine deal a lot of damage to Tangrowth with Icicle Crash and Freeze-Dry respectively, forcing it out, and exploiting the opportunity to fire off strong attacks on its team. Starmie's Ice beam renders Tangrowth unable to check it as it deals too much damage to it, Blissey abuses Tangrowth's passivity and lack of a physical move to set up Calm mind or to use Ice Beam on it.

**Fire-Types**: Infernape's Overheat and Choice banded Flare Blitz and Heatran's Fire-type moves threaten to OHKO Tangrowth, forcing it out. However neither wants to switch-in on it as it threatens them with Knock Off and Earthquake.

**Chip damage**: Tangrowth relies mainly on Regenerator for recovery. This means that any form of chip damage ranging from pivoting moves in U-turn and Volt switch, status effects like Rotom-W's Will-O-Wisp and Quagsire's Toxic, and entry hazard damage in Stealth Rock and Spikes will wear it down, making it a lot less reliable at checking what it usually checks. I would entirely remove this point as it is not tangrowth specific and not even that true due to regen + giga recovery.

[OVERVIEW]

Tangrowth's Grass typing and physical bulk allow it to counter several dangerous Water-types in the tier such as Feraligatr, Crawdaunt, and Rotom-W as well as the dangerous Breloom. Regenerator and Giga Drain keep Tangrowth healthy while it uses utility moves like Knock Off and Sleep Powder to deter the opponent from pivoting around it. Due to its bad special bulk, Tangrowth finds itself very vulnerable to strong special attacks and chip damage, which is why it competes with with Poliwrath, which spreads Scald burns, racks up Hazard damage with Circle throw, andentry hazard damage with Circle Throw, counters Weavile and Mixed Crawdaunt, and checks Infernape. It also faces competition from fellow Grass-type Shaymin, which offers higher speed, letting it check Pokemon like Belly Drum Azumarill, higher special bulk, letting it shrug off Crawdaunt's Sludge bomb, and Aromatherapy while staying healthy with Rest and Natural cure which lets it shrug off Status effectsCure. Despite this, Tangrowth manages to set itself apart thanks to its superior movepool compared to Shaymin aswell as itsand higher physical bulk, earning itself a solid role on balance.

Knock Off allows Tangrowth to hit dangerous special attackers and cripple them by getting rid of Heatran, Latios's and Latias's items and, and Latias's items while OHKOing Alakazam outright. Earthquake expands on Tangrowth's coverage, allowing it to hit Magnezone, Heatran, and Jirachi, while Sleep Powder allows it to put its switch-ins out of commission, further discouraging the opponent from pivoting around it. Sludge bBomb allows Tangrowth to check fellow Grass-types inopposing Grass-types like Breloom, Shaymin, and Rotom-C while absorbing Spore thanks to its Grass typing; this is particularly important against Breloom, as Tangrowth is immune to Spore. It also allows Tangrowth to spread poison around to rack up damage on the opposing teamincremental damage. Tangrowth's lack of an item makes it for an excellent Knock Off switch-in,absorber; it is forced to not run an item because it otherwise can't take a Swords Dance boosted Knock Off from Life Orb Crawdaunt.

Tangrowth generally pairs up with fellow defensive Pokemon that patch out its weaknesses. Blissey checks tier monster Latios and other special attackers. Gliscor provides a very good Heatran and Magnezone check while also defogging for Tangrowth, while Tangrowth patches up Gliscor's Water-type weakness by counteringmakes up for Gliscor's weakness to Water-types like Azumarill, Feraligatr, and Rotom-W. Clefable provides an excellent Weavile check and can lure in Swords Dance Scizor and KO it with Flamethrower, as Tangrowth tends to struggle with it. Rotom-W checks Heatran, Mamoswine, Weavile, and Swords Dance Scizor while pivoting into Tangrowth when using Volt Switch. Starmie Rapid Spins hazards awayTangrowth in with Volt Switch. Starmie spins entry hazards away, allowing Tangrowth to stay healthy in the face of the powerful physical attackers it needs to check. Tangrowth also pairs up very well with fellow Regenerator Pokemon Slowbro, providmaking a Regenerator core between the two that covers each other's weaknesses thanks to the synergy of their types,ir type synergy; for example, Slowbro checks Infernape, while Tangrowth checks Crawdaunt and Feraligatr. Tangrowth is best fit on balance teams as stated earlier.

Tangrowth sports a myriad of moves that it can experiment with over standard ones, for example, Power whip can be utilized over Giga d; for example, Power Whip can be used over Giga Drain thanks to its higher Base Power, though it lacks the accuracy and healing of Giga drain which makes it less preferred. Brick Break can be ran on Tangrowth in orderDrain. Brick Break can be run to lure in and OHKO Weavile; however, it is generally useless and inferior to Earthquake outside of this matchup. Stun Spore can be ran as a final move to spread paralysis around. Hun over Sleep Powder to spread paralysis; however, Sleep Powder is generally more impactful as Tangrowth's status move. Leech s. Leech Seed can be used to further punish switch-ins and to help Tangrowth stay healthy, but it sacrifices coverage in doing so.
