Welcome to the SWSH Battle Stadium Singles Role Compendium! The purpose of this thread is to provide a visual list of what roles Pokemon fulfill in the current metagame. Ideally, the thread will help players of any skill level in finding Pokemon that fulfill their team when searching for specific roles, as well as assisting in encouraging players to use a wider array of Pokemon in their building. Pokemon selection withing the Role Compendium is based on both viability and general performance in the current metagame, however all Pokemon are ordered alphabetically. Check out The Pokemon Dictionary if you don't understand what a certain term means!

Guidelines

• All users are allowed to post nominations, but must be done so with a logical point of view.
• When nominating, check out the SWSH Battle Stadium Single Viability Thread for a general guideline of what's viable. Note however that some exceptions will be made.
• If you feel as if something is not the role it is listed, feel free to mention so, but along the same kind of guidelines as if you were nominating a Pokemon. Think of it as a reverse nomination.
• Keep in mind that the metagame constantly changes from season to season, so expect both subtle and major changes to be made!

General Criteria and Definitions:

1. The Top 60 Pokemon used on SWSH Cartridge Ladder as of 15th January 2021 have been added to this list.

2. Usage underneath approximately 10% has been ignored for this role compendium. For Example, several more Pokemon can use Weakness Policy effectively, but it is currently less than 10% usage on cartridge so it is not a primary item choice. This also applies to other move and item choices, Priority moves, Setup moves and Max Airstream users.

3. Pokemon are ordered in terms of their usage stats overall and not necessarily their viability within a particular niche.

4. A Stall/Wallbreaker is defined as a pokemon that is capable of breaking through Fat or Stall through one of its more popular sets/move choice. This can be either by hitting very hard such as Dracovish or Urshifu and having limited switchins, having setup or using Taunt + setup such as Tapu Fini, using trick to cripple fat such as Rotom-Wash or OHKO moves such as Lapras. A mixed breaker threatens on both sides of the physical special split, Dracozolt due to commonly using Flamethrower/Fireblast to get through Ferrothorn has mixed sweeping capabilities.

5. A Wall is defined as a pokemon able to switch into and check a wide variety of pokemon in the meta defensively. This is weighted towards checking the biggest threats, such as Cinderace, Mimikyu and Landorus-T on the physical side and Zapdos, Tapu Fini and Nihilego on the special side. A mixed wall has the capability to check a variety of both physically offensive and specially offensive threats and generally has strong mixed bulk or a strong physical bulk bolstered with Assault Vest.

6. A pivot is defined as a pokemon that has the capability to pivot in and out of bad matchups with a net gain, either through using u-turn or volt switch or in the case of Toxapex Regenerator. An offensive pivot generally gains momentum through threatening out a pokemon weak to it and using volt switch/u-turn or switching out vs a bad matchup faster than the opponent can move. A defensive pivot can switch into a large portion of the metagame and then pivot out using a slow u-turn/volt switch to bring in a threat safely. Mixed pivots are capable of doing both of the above.
