252 Atk Life Orb burned Groudon Max Quake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Sableye: 143-168 (47 - 55.2%) -- 14.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
You can wisp it and safely stall out and can recover back to full.

+2 252 Atk Life Orb burned Groudon Max Quake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Sableye: 285-335 (93.7 - 110.1%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO
Unfortunately even when it's burned plus 2 Groudon can ohko with the correct roll which is likely why Sab is unexplored in galar without dyna it isn't as bulky in usum/ ndag because of no megas.
+2 252 Atk Life Orb burned Groudon Max Quake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Dynamax Sableye: 285-335 (46.8 - 55%) -- 14.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery Luckilly if they do dynamax after a Swords Dance you can dynamax yourself because groudon is a big threat which you can max darkness twice if they don't get the 14 percent roll to 2HKO and continue to wall with sab and encore after dyna if they sd again or just sacc it into your ditto and potentially win end game.
0 Atk Sableye Max Darkness vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Dynamax Groudon: 76-91 (11.1 - 13.3%) -- possible 6HKO after burn damage
Sadly Max Darkness doesn't do much but with burn chip and being able to stall with recover after you both dyna and encoring the opposing don into sd you can likely beat don with dynamaxing after they sd to wall them.
Lastly, Sab in galar isn't a great mon because of possible wisp misses or toxic misses (Depending on the set) but when it does get put against mons it can wall and doesn't miss status moves in the MU it can work pretty nicely.

Lunala @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Shadow Shield
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hex
- Roost
- Will-O-Wisp
- Defog

Lunala has been Galar's premier check to dangerous physical attackers such as Zekrom and Groudon. Its defensive prowess is bolstered by Shadow Shield—which when used in tandem with Heavy Duty Boots—provides Lunala the ability to safely switch in on hazards and outstall opponents with Roost/threaten them with Wisp and Hex. As Lunala is faster than Groudon, it is able to get a Will-O-Wisp off before Groudon is able to retaliate with a +2 Precipice Blades/Max Quake, which greatly mitigates the threat and allows Lunala to safely recover with Roost.

252 Atk Life Orb Groudon Precipice Blades vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Shadow Shield Lunala: 156-184 (32.6 - 38.4%) -- 99.1% chance to 3HKO
[If they Blades you on your switch into Lunala]

+2 252 Atk Life Orb burned Groudon Precipice Blades vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Shadow Shield Lunala: 155-183 (32.4 - 38.2%) -- 97.9% chance to 3HKO
[If they Blades you after they've Swords Danced on your switch into Lunala and you've wisped them before they hit you]

+2 252 Atk Life Orb burned Groudon Max Quake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Shadow Shield Lunala: 181-213 (37.8 - 44.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
[If they Max Quake you after they've Swords Danced on your switch into Lunala and you've wisped them before they hit you]

+2 252 Atk Life Orb Groudon Max Rockfall vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Aggron: 95-113 (27.6 - 32.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

Never fear, Aggron is here! Watch as it survives Max Quake with Sturdy, recovers 33% with the Iapapa Berry, use Magnet Rise, and then still takes a +2 Max Rockfall and Rest right back up! It can also Counter, which is cool, or even Poison it with a Toxic!! Such innovation, TTTG!

(plz just gimme likes and votes; Mbouchon took Bronzong and I just wanted to contribute)

woohoo my first post on Smogon...so yeah I tailored this Cress just for checking Groudon. Moonlight heals 2/3 in Sun, so Cress can come into an unboosted Groudon, Toxic it, then spam Moonlight/Protect/Max Guard. Reflect is just there but it isn't needed :P Energy Ball is also an option ig

+2 252 Atk Life Orb Groudon Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Cresselia: 200-237 (45 - 53.3%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ SpA Turboblaze Kyurem-White Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Groudon: 428-506 (125.5 - 148.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Kyurem white works well against a lot of mons, especially groudon. With its powerful STAB move draco meteor, or its other strong STAB move, ice beam, which is also x2 to groudon, it can OHKO don easily, as well as outspeeding it with a scarf. This mon can also carry out in the long run, making it not just a groudon only counter, which also makes it great.

:skarmory:
Skarmory @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Body Press
- Roost
- Iron Defense
- Toxic

Pretty standard set with minor add-ins to check Groudon efficiently (iron defense and toxic). It’s a good check for set up Groudon as base (not set up Groudon) can’t really hit skarmory all too well to begin with so it’s forced to set up to at least 3HKO it. +2 Adamant Groudon would be able to 2HKO skarmory (+0 defense) while Jolly Groudon wouldn’t take 50% of skarmory’s health. Iron Defense being at skarmory’s disposal only furthers it’s survivability against Groudon with the extra options of using body press to beat Groudon 1v1 because of its defense or setting up its own defense and using toxic while waiting for Groudon to faint. All in all skarmory is a pretty good check at least for Jolly nature Groudon.

252 Atk Groudon Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 69-82 (20.6 - 24.5%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery

+2 252 Atk Groudon Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 138-163 (41.3 - 48.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

+2 252 Atk Groudon Stone Edge vs. +2 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 69-82 (20.6 - 24.5%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery

+2 252 Atk Groudon Max Rockfall vs. +2 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 90-106 (26.9 - 31.7%) -- 36.7% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery (DYNAMAX)

This Venusaur takes advantage of the fact that Groudon has to set the sun when it comes in. This variant has enough speed to outspeed Modest Regieleki in the sun.

If Groudon sets up on the Venusaur switch, it will be put to sleep or ko'ed the next turn. In this scenario, Groudon becomes setup fodder for Venusaur on the following turn.

Groudon is unable to take a hit from Venusaur, and if it tries to do so by dynamaxing, it will be unable to knock out Venusaur and will faint to Life Orb and G-Max Vine Lash chip damage.

252+ SpA Life Orb Venusaur-Gmax G-Max Vine Lash vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Groudon: 593-697 (173.9 - 204.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

beats Groudon if you can bring it in after a kill/ doubling out of NDM on a predicted sd /or with a pivot move if the opponent has Dynamax then pivot around the Groudon until Dmax is gone, and if the opponent does not have Dynamax then just kill with blades. (only after an sd can ditto ohko the Groudon with blades)

Ability: Shadow Shield
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Moongeist Beam
- Ice Beam
- Meteor Beam

Power Herb Lunala is a potentially devastating threat in ag, capable of luring its most common check in Yveltal with relative ease. Combined with powerful ghost STAB and a solid speed tier, it proves a menacing threat to teams everywhere. What checks and counters can you think of to stop this threat?

Voting ends February 23rd at 6 pm Gmt-5

I would say sash calyrex is the best counter to Lunala.

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Substitute
- Draining Kiss
- Astral Barrage

You can easily get an astral barrage off to take care of shadow shield while taking a moongeist beam in return, but of course due to the sash you live. Because of its x4 weakness to ghost, you can easily one shot it after shadow shield is broken down. I don't know what else to say since it's pretty straightforward. Thanks for reading!

TTar is a good check to Lunala:

Tyranitar @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Rest
- Rock Tomb / Thunder Wave
- Snarl
- Foul Play

Sand Stream breaks Shadow Shield and since that set lacks recovery it wont get it back. Rest + Lefties/Chesto/HDB can keep TTar healthy while all its attacks can punish Lunala or potential switches. Max SpDef allows it to tank powerful hits from Lunala, Calyrex or Special Yveltal.
+1 252 SpA Lunala Meteor Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 98-116 (24.2 - 28.7%) -- 98.8% chance to 4HKO
+1 252 SpA Lunala Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 73-87 (18 - 21.5%) -- possible 5HKO
0- Atk Tyranitar Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Lunala: 448-532 (107.9 - 128.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO (Shadow Shield broken)

Blissey @ Utility Umbrella
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Soft-Boiled
- Toxic
- Aromatherapy
- Confide

Blissey has been and still is one of the most reliable special walls in AG. With the rework of Teleport, Blissey is able to fill the niche of being a slow pivot that provides cleric support and momentum for the team. The release of Utility Umbrella allows Blissey to wall even the most potent special attackers (Specs Kyogre in Rain). This skinny legend easily walls the provided meteor beam Lunala set; from there, one can either choose to toxic the Lunala and out stall it with Soft-Boiled or Teleport into something that threatens it like Calyrex-Shadow and gain momentum.

252 SpA Lunala Ice Beam vs. 4 HP / 252+ SpD Blissey: 60-71 (9.2 - 10.8%)
+1 252 SpA Lunala Meteor Beam vs. 4 HP / 252+ SpD Blissey: 119-141 (18.2 - 21.6%)
