Project SS AG Next Best Thing [On Hiatus]

With a large amount of votes, Fc wins this week with his Double Team + Bulk Up set! Your set will be added to the Leaderboard and Hall of Fame shortly.

:yveltal: Week 5 - Yveltal :yveltal:
:ss/yveltal:

Yveltal is one of the most common threats in AG. It fits on almost every team due to its ability to check the highly dangerous Calyrex-S, on top of providing U-turn support. It can also act as a scary offensive threat with its specially and physically offensive sets, breaking through almost the entire tier with its moves and Dynamax. While Yveltal's movepool isn't too large, it can run some cool unique sets like Choice Band, Choice Specs, etc.

Voting phase starts on June 13th, 3 PM GMT-4.

Yveltal @ Black Glasses
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 252 Atk / 68 SpD / 188 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Laser Focus
- Knock Off
- Roost
- Steel Wing

This set is aimed to bait in a lot of common picks like Eternatus and even Xerneas, and blow them away with a guaranteed crit move powered up by Black Glasses even further. The Sp.def lives 2 specs caly Astral Barrages, and the rest is put in power and speed to be as good at baiting things as possible. Calcs below show that some things just drop to crits from offensive Yveltal, so I think this set (unlike my last) can actually catch people off guard in the good way and claim some kills on things people assume are walls, until crits come into play.
Vs. :xerneas:
252+ Atk Yveltal Max Steelspike vs. 0 HP / 168 Def Xerneas on a critical hit: 384-452 (97.7 - 115%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Yveltal Max Steelspike vs. 0 HP / 168 Def Xerneas on a critical hit: 384-452 (97.7 - 115%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Vs. :eternatus:
252+ Atk Black Glasses Dark Aura Yveltal Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Eternatus on a critical hit: 442-522 (91.8 - 108.5%) -- 50% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Black Glasses Dark Aura Yveltal Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Eternatus on a critical hit: 442-522 (91.8 - 108.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Vs. :yveltal:
252+ Atk Black Glasses Dark Aura Yveltal Max Darkness vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Dark Aura Yveltal on a critical hit: 269-317 (59.1 - 69.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Black Glasses Dark Aura Yveltal Max Darkness vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Dark Aura Yveltal: 179-211 (39.3 - 46.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

(Max crit into regular darkness has a very high chance to 2HKO)

Vs. :ho-oh:
252+ Atk Black Glasses Dark Aura Yveltal Max Darkness vs. 248 HP / 208+ Def Ho-Oh on a critical hit: 417-492 (100.4 - 118.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Vs. :zygarde:
252+ Atk Black Glasses Dark Aura Yveltal Max Darkness vs. 16 HP / 36+ Def Zygarde on a critical hit: 390-460 (108 - 127.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Black Glasses Dark Aura Yveltal Max Darkness vs. 204 HP / 248+ Def Zygarde on a critical hit: 330-388 (80.8 - 95%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

(DD just dies, Phys.def dies after 1 Knock Off hit or any other minimal chip)

Oh no, they have something that counters my Calyrex-S. If only there was a way to GET RID OF IT FORCEFULLY, so introducing the SS OU CLASSIC:

The Plan (Yveltal) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Dark Aura

Step 1: Specs Future Sight, they're going Yveltal if they have any amount of brain cells
Step 2: Hard Yveltal of your own
Step 3: Block since they must stay in (name something else that takes Specs Future Sight + Dark Aura Knock Off)
Step 4: Toxic
Step 5: ????

Yveltal @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 252 HP / 72 SpD / 184 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Substitute
- Disable
- Foul Play
- Roost

The idea of this set is to lure in typical Pokemon that might switch into Yveltal, like Xerneas and Zacian-C, and set up a Substitute on the switch so that when they attack it to break the Substitute, you can Disable their moves. While this doesn't usually allow Yveltal to beat these Pokemon on its own, it can make them much easier for a teammate to handle. It also is useful against slower Pokemon that might think they can take a hit and OHKO like Groudon or Choice Specs Kyogre, where after they break the Substitute, you can simply Disable their only move that hits Yveltal for any significant damage or a Choice-locked move and wall them.

The EV spread is standard and outspeeds positive natured base 90s. While max speed is probably more effective for this set, I don't think the worse matchup against Calyrex-S is worth it

Swagger + Foul Play
:ss/yveltal:
Yveltal @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swagger
- Foul Play
- Roost
- Substitute

This set is aimed at being very annoying towards the opposing team. With swagger confusing the opponent, and acting as a swords dance boost for foul play, this Yveltal can cheese its way past a lot of Pokemon such as Zacian-C, Groudon, Marshadow, and Eternatus while still being able to check most choice-locked variants of Calyrex-S. It finds entry via Pokemon like Calyrex-S, Necrozma-Dusk Mane, and Groudon. Roost allows it to stay healthy throughout the game so that it can continuously harass the opponent. Subsitute can make Yveltal even more annoying, while also potentially handing yveltal an extra kill. It can also block toxic attempts from the likes of chansey or eternatus, and will-o-wisp from Lunala.

Here are some calcs:

Yveltal @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD / 4 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Bold Nature
- Foul Play
- Taunt
- Toxic
- Roost

I think this set was used in Gen 7 AG (with a different spread, of course). Fully invested, Yveltal is a respectably bulky physical wall, allowing it to switch in on most setup sweepers. 4 Spe EVs lets it outspeed most defensive Yveltals, annoying them, as well as switch-ins, with Taunt. Outside of Yveltal, Taunt helps annoy more passive Pokemon like Ferrothorn and defensive Zygarde. Foul Play discourages faster switch-ins, that are generally less bulky and so are more vulnerable to the move. This set can switch in on Marshadow using Poltergeist, and nearly OHKO it with Foul Play (it OHKOes after Marshadow uses Close Combat).

+1 252+ Atk Zacian-Crowned Behemoth Blade vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Yveltal: 246-289 (54 - 63.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252+ Atk Zacian-Crowned Wild Charge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Yveltal: 294-348 (64.6 - 76.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Marshadow Poltergeist vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Yveltal: 94-109 (20.6 - 23.9%) -- guaranteed 5HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Marshadow Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Yveltal: 203-239 (44.6 - 52.5%) -- 21.5% chance to 2HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Yveltal Dual Wingbeat (2 hits) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Yveltal: 142-172 (31.2 - 37.8%) -- approx. 88.8% chance to 3HKO
+4 224 Atk Zygarde 50% Thousand Arrows vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Yveltal: 199-235 (43.7 - 51.6%) -- 10.2% chance to 2HKO

+1 252+ Atk Dark Aura Yveltal Foul Play vs. 180 HP / 0 Def Zacian-Crowned: 183-216 (49.4 - 58.3%) -- 98.8% chance to 2HKO
252+ Atk Dark Aura Yveltal Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Marshadow: 264-312 (82.2 - 97.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
224 Atk Dark Aura Yveltal Foul Play vs. 36 HP / 160+ Def Zygarde 50%: 114-135 (31.1 - 36.8%) -- 71.4% chance to 3HKO

Assault Vest Yveltal

Yveltal @ Assault Vest
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 32 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD / 224 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Oblivion Wing
- Dark Pulse
- Foul Play
- Heat Wave

General idea
The genral idea is to use the natural bulk of this pokèmon with minimal EVs investment in order to use its good set of resistances at immunities.
Although you have to forget Roost, don't understimate what Yveltal may emergency check:
  • 252+ SpA Fairy Aura Xerneas Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Yveltal: 308-366 (78.3 - 93.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
and, in return, you are able to chip damage Xerneas.

Oblivion Wing is here as the STAB Flying move because it is also a powerful healing move if we are able to hit some target supereffectively.
Dark Pulse is the preferred Dark STAB because this Yveltal is special oriented in order to avoid Intimidate, but Foul Play is still good towards physical threats with set-up moves.
Heat Wave is here for coverage because Steels are a nuisance.

EVs (spread) and item
32 HP EVs are needed to reach 401 health points, enough to force Blissey to use Seismic Toss the 5th time to OHKO Yveltal.
With 224+ Spe we are able to reach 319 points, enough to outspeed some threats (Kyurem-B, Kyurem-W, Rayquaza, Zygarde / 95 / +Spe / 252 / +0 =317 Spe points) aside from EVs investment.
The remaining EVs are put into SpA in order to keep some offensive presence.

Assault Vest forces us to drop Roost as a reliable recovery move, but this can be a good thing because we are forced to keep attacking and, if the opponent guesses wrong, we are able to cripple his switchins. Also, keep in mind that AV work well if we decide to Dynamax Yveltal when we need its extra bulk.

Yveltal @ Power Herb
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Acrobatics / Roost
- Sky Attack
- Hone Claws
- Knock Off

Basically you Hone Claws and then do the Power Herb Sky Attack. After that, you can have some 110-BP Acrobatics and kill some things. Alternatively Roost means it's a better check to Calyrex-S. Hone Claws is also nice because it increases the accuracy of Sky Attack. Apparently +1 Sky Attack can KO Xerneas without investment after Rocks. Knock Off because it's an Yveltal. This Yveltal can pseudo-check Calyrex-S but mainly baits out Xerneas.

The EVs are pretty straightforward and meant to outspeed Modest Xerneas (because they're all modest) and hit as hard as possible. Power Herb with Sky Attack allows Yveltal to have a strong Flying STAB move.

Tailwind Yveltal

Yveltal @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 220 Def / 136 SpA / 68 SpD / 84 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dark Pulse / Snarl / Foul Play
- Heat Wave / U-turn
- Tailwind
- Roost

Tailwind Yveltal can ease predictions against Calyrex-S and friends by boosting it and allies Speed by two times. With enough Special Defense to live Choice Specs Astral Barrage from full, enough Physical Defense to live Adamant Zacian-C's Wild Charge, and enough Speed to outrun +2 Adamant Groudon after Tailwind, Yveltal can have some great defensive Utility. The rest of the EVs are shoved into Special Attack, or if not running Heat Wave or Dark Pulse, can be used in HP. The Dark move depends on if you want to damage Zacian-C more, almost always beat Calyrex-S, or actually do more damage. Heat Wave can be used if no Foul Play to 2HKO Zacian-C with the given SpAttack investment, whereas U-turn is a pivoting move able to get out of a Xerneas matchup. Roost is self-explanatory and provides Yveltal with Reliable recovery.

Teammates such as Marshadow and Zacian-C that benefit from Tailwind also easing prediction against Calyrex-S and having opposing Zacian-C weakened are great partners for this Yveltal set. Both Pokemon mentioned above also help check Calyrex-S and Xerneas, respectively, and Zacian-C likes being imposter-proofed for a few turns.

Offensive Calcs:

132 SpA Yveltal Heat Wave vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Zacian-Crowned: 170-202 (52.1 - 61.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+1 252+ Atk Dark Aura Yveltal Foul Play vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Zacian-Crowned: 183-216 (56.1 - 66.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

132 SpA Dark Aura Yveltal Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Prism Armor Necrozma-Dusk-Mane: 222-262 (55.7 - 65.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

132 SpA Dark Aura Yveltal Max Darkness vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Prism Armor Necrozma-Dusk-Mane: 361-427 (107.7 - 127.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Defensive Calcs:

252 SpA Choice Specs Calyrex-Shadow Astral Barrage vs. 0 HP / 68 SpD Yveltal: 166-196 (42.2 - 49.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

+1 252+ Atk Zacian-Crowned Wild Charge vs. 0 HP / 220 Def Yveltal: 332-392 (84.4 - 99.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Life Orb Groudon Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 220 Def Yveltal: 291-343 (74 - 87.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+1 252 Atk Necrozma-Dusk-Mane Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 220 Def Yveltal: 316-374 (80.4 - 95.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
