Smogon Tournament #8

Tournament Rules | Signups | Round 1

Welcome to Smogon Tournament VIII, the eighth edition of Smogon's premier Standard OU tournament. From the hundreds who will register to play in this tournament, a single champion will be crowned and forever become a part of the exclusive group of elite players that hold an Official Smogon Tournament trophy. Winning this tournament is considered by many to be one of the greatest achievements in competitive Pokémon.

Specific Rules

  • This is a standard BW OU tournament.
  • The tournament will be single elimination.
  • Players will play a best of three series of games each round.
  • Matches are to be played on Pokemon Online (Smogon University server).

Standard Rules and Clauses

  • Sleep Clause: A player cannot put two or more different opposing Pokémon to sleep using attacks that induce sleep to opposing pokémon.
  • Species Clause: A player cannot have two of the same pokémon on their team. For example, a player cannot have two Koffing on his or her team.
  • Wifi Clause: Players must turn on the Team Preview feature where players can view the opposing team's Pokémon and choose their lead Pokémon.
  • Evasion Clause*: A player cannot use the moves Double Team or Minimize in their Pokémon's movesets, and cannot give their Pokémon the hold items BrightPowder or Lax Incense.
  • OHKO Clause*: Players cannot use Horn Drill, Guillotine, Sheer Cold, or Fissure in any of their Pokémon's movesets.
  • Timer Clause*: If a player exhausts the timer, he/she loses.
  • Uber Clause*: Pokémon that are in the Uber Tier are not allowed to be used. The tier list can be found here. In addition, the following restrictions on abilities apply:
    • Players cannot use the ability Moody on any of their Pokémon.
    • Players cannot have a Pokémon with the ability Drizzle and a Pokémon with the ability Swift Swim on the same team.
*These clauses should automatically be enforced in the Smogon University BW OU tier.

Questions and Answers
  • Q: Should I save a log of my match as proof of my victory?
    • A: Yes. While it is not mandatory to show us the log of your victory, it is the only proof you have in the case of a dispute and it is always a good practice to keep the logs of your tournament matches.
  • Q: Will there be a Predictions Tournament like last year?
    • A: Yes. It is hosted by Hipmonlee.
  • Q: Can I change teams between battles/rounds?
    • A: Yes.
Rulings

Those who have followed Smogon's official tournaments should be well aware of these, but here they are again:

Identity

I expect many battles to be completed under alts. This can be bad for tournament security, and thus I will make this clear: If I hear any whispers of identity theft (battling as someone you are not) or proxy battling (helping someone else battle through pm) I will not be pleased and I will take severe actions.

Scouting

Next, I do not want to hear anything about counterteaming, at all. Do not complain about it. I also don't want to hear about any blatant scouting. There is a difference between "[user] is known for using stall" and "let me follow [user] around all day to watch all his battles since I am his opponent". I expect a lot of the former and none of the latter.

With that said, I give permission to all battlers to ask any person spectating their battle to leave if they do not want them watching.

Timer Clause

As for taking long between moves, if your opponent asks you to hurry up, please oblige. If you are doing a damage calc for a key turn that is one thing, but prolonging every move is suspicious and annoying. Don't do it. Furthermore, Battle Timeout is a rule for a reason. If you run out of time, you lose, simple as that. It does not matter what your opponent says. Do not battle if you think you will have to leave mid battle, and instead reschedule for a better time.

Disconnections

Finally, in the case of a disconnect, the decision is in the hands of the player who did not disconnect. The options are: redo the battle move for move, redo the battle with the same teams but different moves, or redo the battle with completely different teams. If the battle was without a doubt over, they may also take the win. Any suspicion that a disconnect was committed on purpose to redo a match may be appealed to me, and if I feel this happened there will be severe consequences, don't do it.

Highlight Matches

mostwanted vs imperfectluck

Up-and-coming user known for his heavy offense team vs last year's champion known for stall. This clash of styles is sure to make an interesting battle. ~ Steven Snype

AndViet vs Bluewind

AndViet has been a presence in tournaments for quite a while now and shouldn't be underestimated. On the other hand, Bluewind is undeniably one of the best tournament players of 2010 and 2011, so it will certainly be a struggle for AndViet to overcome him.

Stallion vs zarator

The stud of Oceania's treble winning world cup champion team, Stallion, comes up against a consistent and versatile tournament player in zarator. The battle will come down to which player has their eye on the ball; will Stallion's ego be in check enough to beat an underrated opponent, or will zarator be able to divert his attention from CAP ASB to put in enough effort to win his match? Either way, it'll be an entertaining battle between two people of Italian heritage. ~ The_Chaser

Stunt vs Kevin Garrett

If preparing for Bluewind took three weeks, Kevin Garrett would need months to prepare for what Stunt might throw at him. Best known as a Baton Pass specialist, Stunt will get his hands dirty and try every trick in the book to troll his opponents to a victory. Will Kevin Garrett's solid and sturdy style of play shut down Stunt's antics, or will Stunt find another way to play around the metagame and force KG out of his element? ~ Snunch

Eo Ut Mortus vs Thatsjustpeachy

Eo Ut Mortus has proven he has the goods many times and he'll need to do so again against the promising new talent Thatsjustpeachy. It is bound to be a great match. ~ Golden Sun

ToF vs Heist

Twist of Fate is well known for his expertise in DPP UU, and like many great UU players, his skill extends into the OU metagames as well. Heist, by now, should be known by everyone involved in the tournaments scene; he has been one of the most successful tournament players in 2011, winning many titles for himself. He has been a member of the World Cup of Pokemon's Oceania team for two years, and this year was undefeated in that tournament with a 6-0 record. Will "BROWN GUY" ToF manage to overcome the odds, or will Heist prove why he is the favorite to win the whole tournament? Stay tuned to find out!

BIHI vs Maaf

BIHI, one of the best french BW OU players, who succesfully played during the WCop with quite consistent teams, will be playing Maaf, a ST10 Top16 player. Even though Maaf is not well-known in BW, he uses cool tricks on his teams, meaning BIHI will have to outpredict him. Interesting battle indeed. ~ Agammemnon

wilson46 vs Malekith

Several-time tournament winner wilson46 faces down Malekith, one of the best Spanish players, in a matchup that could easily go either way. Some may still remember wilson46's appearances a few Smogon Tour seasons ago, in which he quickly accrued a fan following with his sudden successes. Malekith, captain of this year's Team Spain, is often game to try out some new but clever idea, making him fairly unpredictable, and has some good performances in the Tour and World Cup to his name. Those in the prediction tournament are advised to give this one some careful consideration before submitting! ~ jumpluff

B-Lulz vs Hantsuki

You may not have heard of both of these players, but don't let that put you off this fascinating pairing! Experienced player B-Lulz has had a solid tournament run for years, with success in both VGC and OU, and is not to be brushed aside. Meanwhile, if there's one thing he can expect, it's that Hantsuki will bring something he won't expect. Hantsuki enjoyed victories against Stallion and Limitless in this year's World Cup, showing that a unique and innovative approach isn't all the Brazilian has. ~ jumpluff

panamaxis vs Nails

At first glance, double trophy holder panamaxis, who went a staggering 6-1 in this year's World Cup of Pokémon for Team Oceania, seems near-unstoppable, especially when you take his previous Smogon Tour and Smogon Tournament showings into account. But don't be so quick to underestimate his opponent; although Nails is better known for his successes in RU and LC, he caused an upset against veteran JabbaTheGriffin only last round. panamaxis is always enjoyable to watch, and it will certainly be worth seeing if underdog Nails can pull off another surprise victory. ~ jumpluff

Deadline

The deadline for Round 2 Matches will be Sunday, the 1st of January 2012, at 23:59 EST.

This deadline is 3 weeks because a) Deoxys-S is banned which may mean some people need to make new teams and test them, and b) so that the deadline doesn't end up too close to Christmas. Future deadlines will be significantly shorter so don't expect these long deadlines to continue.

Good luck everyone!

IMPORTANT:
Deoxys-S is banned from this round and future rounds of the tournament.

Coin flip lost, never been paired with someone like that before. He couldn't battle during the week, couldn't use irc and then when he was active he would be on po and not on the forum -_-. Well goodluck to whoever is paired with this guy in r2 I CALL THE BATTLE WILL NOT BE PLAYED!
I really hope he is exaggerating...

Lol, I'm against Bluewind..

I don't think it'll be a problem setting our match up since I always see him on #ratemyteam.
