Silly Things You've Seen On The OU Ladder!

So I just saw this:
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/hackmons-84292826

And was like, "WTF are you guys doin'? This isn't how hackmons works!"

XenoBlade911: Well, Air Balloon + Dig makes you completely invulnerable for the startup turn. But it's still pretty dumb, 'cause the opponent will just switch to someone who's immune to ground and then own you, or underspeed you and hit you anyway on the second turn. Or take so little damage from it that it won't be worthwhile anyway, especially since it forces you to attack only once every two turns.

Edit: Also, not sure if this is silly, but I just had this battle: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/hackmons-84297024
Contrary Shaymin-Sky. And he procs Moonblast's Sp. Atk drop on it right away. Poor guy. Prior to that, half his team is swept by Sturdy Shedinja. Also Illusion Regigigas breaks team display.

Edit2: http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/ubers-84319785
Hax, silly sets, and bad strategy. Mega Mewtwo X using Aura Sphere on Cresselia. Cresselia freeze-haxing Mewtwo to death. Mega Gardevoir being outsped by Giratina. Mega Gardevoir staying in on Giratina's Shadow Force. Fake Tears Wigglytuff. And more!

Edit3: http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/ubers-84319711
Arceus-Grass with Grass Knot. Isn't Judgement sufficient?

Edit4: http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/ubers-84320725
Ladder troll encounters ladder troll in the battle of the century!
I swear, the Ubers ladder is great for stuff like this.

Edit5: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/ubers-84319339
How not to defeat Mega Gengar, and how not to use Mega Gengar. And how not to react to a foe you outspeed baiting you with Destiny Bond. And Flash Cannon Xerneas actually accomplishing something. And those rankings... how did they get so high up?

Edit6: http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/hackmons-84302059
In which Arceus-Fairy is Normal-type. Do the Arceus Formes' types have an unannounced, invisible reset to Normal on entry if they aren't Multitype with the correct Plate, or something? If so, next time I see that Air Balloon Wonder Guard Arceus-Electric, it's eating a Contrary Superpower from Shaymin-Sky. Or is that guy using a Multitype Arceus-Fairy without a Plate? Incidentally, Trick failed against it. Does that mean it's holding a random Mega Stone for no reason?

Edit7: http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/hackmons-84321294
Attempting to Perish-trap a Sableye. Which makes me think: Should Perish Trappers run Soak to stop Ghost-types from switching? That sounds like it would be funny.

Team that doesn't even qualify as OU defeats a mono-Dragon in Ubers. This guy is clearly stuck in Gen V.

-Attempting to burn an already-paralyzed Manaphy.
-Megahorn missing 3 times in a row. Ouch.
-Ambipom with Payback.
-+1 Volcarona OHKOing Y-zard with Fiery Dance. Okay, it was a crit, but even then it's only a 25% chance. Who do you think you are, Victini?
-Scolipede passing max speed to Azumarill. It proceeds to use Aqua Jet.
-Bright Powder Magnezone, it seems: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/ou-84319786
-Shame we never got to see the 4 NU Water types: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/oumonotype-84318956
-Ash's team, featuring Bellyzard reborn: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/ou-84319566 Also, dat recoil at turn 12.
-Among other things, Ditto fail: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/ou-84318534
-Toxic Orb+Trick Gengar vs. Chill Drive Genesect. Neither one lived for long, but Genesect only won because Gengar used Sludge Bomb on it.
-Toxic Spikes Cloyster without Leftovers.
-Roar Skarmory. Is Whirlwind attracting too many Imprison+Whirlwind Smeargles for you?
-Another Skarmory with both Iron Head and Brave Bird.
-Sableye with Dazzling Gleam.
-Alakazam using Psychic on said Sableye. Type matchups aren't difficult, people.
-Tangela.
-SubPunch Azumarill. Hmm...
-Ice Punch Gengar. ADV was a long time ago, dude.
-Rest/Sleep Talk/EQ/Draco Meteor Garchomp.
-Kangaskhan, which I haven't seen in OU since her mega stone got banned.
-Bulky Starmie and special Swampert, anyone? Oh, and a Swoobat.

In Hackmons, Arceus name and sprite mean nothing. It's Normal unless it has Multitype and any plate.
Mega Stone transfer only fails if the holder is its rightful owner (same as with Griseous Orb). Plates cannot be transferred if the holder has Multitype.
So there are a few things that could have actually happened:
  • Arceus had Multitype (and no Plate), and Deoxys wanted to give him a Plate.
  • Arceus had Sticky Hold.
  • Arceus had Multitype and any Plate, though then it wouldn't have been Normal. e.g. it could have been Steel and Gengar's Jugment be Poison. Just watched the end of the battle, where Gengar's Judgment is shown to be Ghost from Spooky Plate.

Thanks for telling me. I'll make sure to use that to smack the next Wonder Guard Air Balloon Arceus-Electric I find.

I started doing the same after someone mentioned that to me. I wasn't sure exactly what they were getting at, 'cause they were kinda vague, but I figured it was better to be safe than sorry.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/hackmons-83796972 -- So apparently switching is too mainstream.

-Using Hi Jump Kick on a Sableye and then later on a Trevenant.
-Superpower Eelektross OK, fine, maybe that one isn't terrible. Definitely far from optimal, though
-Zap Cannon without Coil. Or, for that matter, Thunder and Zap Cannon on the same set.
-Focus Punch Conkeldurr... on a Trevenant behind a substitute.

Well, about that...

Not silly, but watch Perish trap backfire horribly starting from turn 24.

In gen 5 BH I ran something much more annoying than anything you see on that ladder commonly:
Giratina@Brightpowder
252 in everything
I forget what nature I had
Sand Veil
Double Team
I forget the last 3 moves
I ran that on a Sand team.

Also, on the Hackmons ladder I encountered a team of Litwicks, not one of which was over level 35.

WELP

i went into the ubers ladder with the battling 1337 team (the one from the smog #26) and i ran into 3 straight teams with one pokemon

THREE TEAMS WITH ONE POKEMON EACH

first guy had rayquaza, the opponent forfeited
second had mega mawile, i beat it with mamo
third had swagger shedinja (srsly)

won all 3 matches

edit: next match was some guy with destiny bond carvanha a full team (yay), running trick room dialga

well.... guess it surprises people? (dialga has 90 base speed tho, don't know why you'd run a TR set with it)

oh, and he timerstalled out the battle, so i won that too

moar edit: saw avalanche palkia. with flame orb. and psychic (not psystrike, PSYCHIC) mewtwo. same battle. (why would you run psychic mewtwo when psystrike exists)

I just saw a Pain Split, Protect, Counter, Will O Wisp Dusknoir as well as a Beat Up Weavile. The thing about Beat Up is that Counter only accounts for the first hit, so it's a decent way around Wobbuffet at least. :)

I have recently run into a player wielding an offensive level 50 smeagle running ember water gun vine whip and thunder shock it made me tremble with fear!

Maybe they run unnerve to cripple trevenant or something.
Edit: just ran into a gliscor with a toxic orb but no poison heal

So what was that Victini using as a held item? It's not the standard Choice set, and it's mixed. Is it trying to bluff one Choice and switch to the other side to kill your wall? That might actually be clever, if it weren't for:

4- Atk Victini Bolt Strike vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Greninja: 234-276 (81.8 - 96.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
and either
252 SpA Victini Blue Flare vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 169-199 (40.8 - 48%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
or
252+ SpA Victini Blue Flare vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 184-217 (44.4 - 52.4%) -- 19.1% chance to 2HKO

I mean seriously, WTF?

Unless Greninja is defensive or something.

well id assume he wouldnt have an adamant or jolly nature on victini as that would be rather redundant so i raise you this

4 Atk Victini Bolt Strike vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Greninja: 260-308 (90.9 - 107.6%) -- 50% chance to OHKO

Bolt Strike is physical, so he'd be running Modest or any other -Attack nature. And Bolt Strike did 85%, which is below the minimum for neutral nature calcs unless Greninja has defensive investment. And Sp. Atk neutral natures only let Victini deal 48% to AV Conkeldurr with Blue Flare if Conkeldurr has non-max HP, a -Sp. Def nature, or no Sp. Def investment and Victini rolls max damage.
