Well done for Solaros & Lunaris for winning with Poliwrath :poliwrath: and AV Cosmoem for coming in second place with Rayquaza :rayquaza: !

This week is a ghostly threat from Gen 4, this time Giratina-Origin's base forme!

:dp/giratina:
Giratina @ Kasib Berry
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Whirlwind
- Copycat
- Spore
- Synthesis

In Generation 4, there is nothing to bounce back Whirlwind. If enough hazards are up, then this set can end up cycling teams down to their last Pokemon. Kasib Berry protects Giratina from powerful Shadow Sneak such as those from Giratina-O.

You have until Saturday the 20th of June to hit me with you best checks and counters!

Palkia @ Lustrous Orb
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Stealth Rock
- Recover
- Taunt

252 SpA Lustrous Orb Palkia Draco Meteor vs. 248 HP / 252 SpD Giratina: 426-504 (84.6 - 100.1%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

Honestly I recommend Shed Shell, so here are the calcs.

252 SpA Palkia Draco Meteor vs. 248 HP / 252 SpD Giratina: 356-420 (70.7 - 83.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Palkia Draco Meteor over 2 turns vs. 248 HP / 252 SpD Giratina: 536-632 (106.5 - 125.6%) -- guaranteed KO in 2 turns

This is a common rain lead, slower than most sun leads in which chlorophyll giratina is found on. Taunt + Drizzle Completely shuts it down. Palkia has a 100 base speed allowing it to outspeed the 90 base speed of giratina. Even if they manage to get a sunny day of, manual weather is not permanent unlike summoned weather.

:dp/rayquaza:
Rayquaza @ Choice Band
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Outrage
- Fire Fang
- Volt Tackle
- Extreme Speed / Wood Hammer / Close Combat / ...

Submitting Rayquaza again. This is a breaker on sun teams designed to tear holes in the opposition.

252 Atk Choice Band Rayquaza Outrage vs. 248 HP / 252 Def Giratina: 456-536 (90.6 - 106.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

The other moves are for coverage on other threats, and don't really matter when facing Giratina.

reserving salamence

:dp/salamence:

Salamence @ Lum Berry
Ability: Suction Cups
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Outrage
- Extreme Speed
- Spore

Giratina can't whirlwind because of Suction Cups or Spore because of Lum Berry. You should always Spore first turn and then set up and OHKO with +2 Outrage. Extreme Speed helps against revenge killers. If they choose to Whirlwind first turn instead of Spore, then you have a free confusion heal at your disposal with Lum Berry.

+2 252+ Atk Salamence Outrage vs. 252 HP / 252 Def Giratina: 614-726 (121.8 - 144%) -- guaranteed OHKO

PH Blissey as a check (you can't counter this thing w/o suction cups or weather)

Blissey (F) @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Protect
- Taunt
- Filler (Toxic / Night Shade / Spikes / Ice Beam...)
- Filler

Turn 1 Protect unless you want to go for the predict. Protect blocks Whirlwind this gen and changes Copycat to Protect. Taunt turn 2; Toxic Orb will prevent Spore, Taunt will prevent Whirlwind, Copycat is still locked on Protect. Turn 3 is open season. You can alternatively go for a lot of options to punish Giratina or switching out.

:Weavile:
Weavile @ Lum Berry
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Pursuit
- Taunt
- Recover
- Toxic Spikes

Weavile as a counter.

Among the weather abilities, Snow Warning is probably the best because this Giratina set could fundamentally be the same with Swift Swim in rain. Snow Warning makes sure Giratina can't outspeed you in any way since Slush Rush doesn't exist yet. Moreover only ice pokemon are immune to hail damage helping with passive damage against most teams.

So by setting hail, Weavile outspeeds Giratina and can taunt first. Hail damage helps wearing down Giratina as it has no recovery. After taunt, Giratina either uses Struggle or has to switch out and you can use Pursuit. Recover is needed since Weavile is sadly very weak to hazards. Finally Toxic Spikes to annoy the opponent's team and put Giratina on a timer if it comes back.

Edit : victim set was modified with synthesis replacing sunny day but i didn't notice it :( so ignore the part about giratina having no recovery

I decided to add explanation bc I can

1. Manu11, it is the only set that makes guaranteed progress
2. Av Cosmoem, It loses if they have wg + Stag ray or lati which is extremely common. EIther they get a free wg switch or die then trap you and then giratina wins, but I feel it is better than the remaining sets and outside of a giratina check I really like this set.
3. Tmi489, This was extremely hard because I dont really like any of the remaining sets. This set atleast can afford to take hazards damage and such. It must have the filler baton pass tho, which just makes it a meh pivot. Cheezy Would get the vote, but Salamence is rocks weak so any good player could still win against it. It also cant gain and positioning unless it doubles which also might make it take more rocks.

1. manu 11
2. monsareeasy
3. cheesy
i dont like either dragon type set, neither can break through the meta (ray too weak without a stronger ability, mence literally cant do anything against a wg) but mence counters gira better

Alright so now that we've finished with victim of the month and a half, we can get back to posting!

From Gen 6, on the rise, it's Mega Aerodactyl!
:xy/aerodactyl-mega:
Aerodactyl-Mega @ Choice Band
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Diamond Storm
- Dragon Ascent
- Thousand Arrows
- Trick

Submit your counters! You have until August 10, Monday.

Giratina as a counter.
:Giratina:
Giratina @ Griseous Orb
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Spore
- Curse
- Recover
- Substitute

It walls every move of Aerodactyl-Mega taking max 44% from Dragon Ascent. (252 Atk Choice Band Aerodactyl-Mega Dragon Ascent vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Giratina: 192-226 (38.1 – 44.9%)). The other moves do less damage and Trick is taken care of with Griseous Orb which is untrickable. Giratina being Prankster can recover before Aerodactyl-Mega gets a second hit or even Spore it. Being Ghost type is also nice vs Shadow Tag in general which means that if for whatever reason Giratina lost its ability or is unable to recover stall/Spore, it can escape and come back to take care of Aerodactyl-Mega.

Overall, this Giratina just stops Aerodactyl-Mega from doing any damage as it just recovers the life it lost on the switch and will always win the 1V1.

Slowbro-mega as a counter
Slowbro-Mega.gif
Slowbro-Mega @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Fur Coat
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Whirlpool
- Slack Off
- Magic Coat
- Spore

In a similar way to Manu’s set, Slowbro walls aero pretty effectively (252 Atk Choice Band Aerodactyl-Mega Dragon Ascent vs. 248 HP / 252 Def Fur Coat Slowbro-Mega: 78-93 (19.8 - 23.6%)). Whirlpool is one of the few ways to trap it and stop it from wussing out whenever it’s threatened (8 SpA Slowbro-Mega Whirlpool vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Aerodactyl-Mega: 102-120 (33.8 - 39.8%)). Then, feel free to spore or continue hitting it. Trick is annoying to deal with but you should still get the kill with whirlpool, and Rocky Helmet is run over lefties or goggles to avoid giving aero extra survivability while punishing it for attacking.

Idea is nice but trapping moves don't trap pokemon who have Shadow Tag so Aerodactyl-Mega can still leave even after whirlpool. Put Slowbronite and you got a good counter for sure as you check trick and it can't really damage you

Edit : it actually works, ignore me

rip
good to know though

edit: are you sure? tried it out in custom game and seemed to trap fine, and bulbapedia specifies ghosts can't be hit, no mention of stag
