Welcome to the Pure Hackmons iteration of Victim of the Week! Hopefully this project will help gather information and spread knowledge of checks and counters to popular Pokemon in the tier.

How it works
Each week I will nominate a Pokemon as VotW. You will need to nominate a Pokemon to either check or counter the VotW (make sure to state which in post).
The submission phase will last 5 days and the voting phase will last 2 days each cycle.
The "Hall of Fame" will be a ladder system with the winner getting 2 points each week and second place getting 1. Plus your sets will be archived.

Rules
1. Follow the definitions for checks and counters in The Smog issue #32.
2. Please make sure to explain the set. Doesn't need to be long just make sure people know why its a check / counter. Preferably with calcs
3. Reservations only last 12 hours.
4. Different sets of the same Pokemon can be nominated.
5. Don't be toxic, if someone posts a 'bad' set help them out instead of flaming.
6. Do not vote for yourself

The very first victim, rising from the shadows of Gen 6 is:

:xy/gengar-mega:
Gengar-Mega @ Spooky Plate
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shell Smash
- Judgment
- Secret Sword
- Spore

One of the best Mold Breakers in ORAS, being able to easily tear through and Wonder Guards that don’t resist its powerful Ghost-type Judgments with the added benefit of self Imposterproofing! Show me your checks and counters!

Submission phase ends Saturday 16th May! (More time to submit this week to get in line with the weekdays)

Yveltal @ Safety Goggles
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Pursuit
- Haze
- Spore
- Recover

This is an all-purpose Prankster support set that is mostly meant to pass out Sleeps and Haze set up sweepers. The reason it can be especially threatening against Mold Breaker Gengar-Mega is that when you bring it in, they will probably think that you are trying to Sucker Punch them and try to hard switch, which you can punish with Pursuit. But you don't necessarily need to go all in on the first encounter. Spore is a safe play because Gengar is typically holding Spooky Plate in order to Imposter proof. If they think you are trying to Pursuit they may choose Dark Void, but will lose to your priority. This will free you up to Pursuit them. Safety Goggles protect you if they go to their Magic Bounce. Haze + Recover helps against other pokemon who try to set up. And Yveltal's typing resists Gengar's Judgment and is neutral against its Secret Sword.

Here is a rather uncommon but good counter.

:Gyarados-Mega:
Gyarados-Mega @ Safety Goggles
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Pursuit
- Magic Coat
- Gastro Acid

Gyarados-Mega is a counter to Gengar-Mega. With 95/109/130 and dark typing it easily counters Judgment. With max hp/def it can switch in safely as it avoids the 2HKO from Secret Sword and the OHKO at +2.

252 SpA Gengar-Mega Secret Sword vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Gyarados-Mega: 156-184 (39.6 - 46.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

+2 252 SpA Gengar-Mega Secret Sword vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Gyarados-Mega: 308-364 (78.3 - 92.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Safety goggles allows Gyarados-Mega to switch in without fearing Spore. It is then able to 2HKO with Pursuit if Gengar-Mega doesn't switch out and OHKO in case it does. Sucker Punch is still at 80 in gen 6 so you OHKO Gengar-Mega 0 Atk Gyarados-Mega Sucker Punch vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Gengar-Mega: 306-360 (116.7 - 137.4%) if it attacks.

The crux of this set is the ability : Infiltrator. Gengar-Mega being quite frail, it is usually brought on the field with a substitute thanks to another Pokemon who has Sub/Baton Pass which means that it can usually either do big damage or just leave the field safely because the substitute takes the damage from Pursuit. With Infiltrator, Gyarados-Mega can punish Gengar-mega even with a sub. Magic Coat bounces back sleep moves like Spore and Dark Void forcing Gengar-Mega out which you take advantage of with Pursuit. Finally, Sucker Punch gives you priority.

All around this Gyarados-Mega makes for a good Gengar-Mega counter, even behind a sub, and also provides answers to other special attackers like Latios-Mega and MMY. It is very effective against Baton Pass teams that heavily rely on Substitute by breaking the chain with Gastro Acid. Finally this set works very well against level 2 Spiritomb.

PS : Other items are possible such as Lum Berry to make it possible to switch on Dark Void Gengar-Mega. You can also run Shed Shell to avoid Shadow Tag mindgames or Leftovers for passive recovery.

Submitting Mega Banette as a check:

:banette-mega:
Banette-Mega @ Choice Band
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Shadow Sneak
- Play Rough / Sacred Fire / Diamond Storm / ...
- Thousand Arrows / Gear Grind / Pursuit / ...
- Leaf Blade / U-turn / Liquidation / Trick / ...

Mega Banette can easily revenge kill Mega Gengar with a powerful Shadow Sneak. Mega Gengar cannot survive this due to its lack of a Focus Sash. Mega Banette can also switch in on a predicted Secret Sword, so pairing this with a Magic Coat Audino is a good idea. Mega Banette can also, if it wishes, use Pursuit on Gengar to catch it switching out. While this does give Wonder Guards free opportunities to come in, Mega Banette can also bombard them with assorted coverage or Trick. It's difficult to switch Mega Banette in, so be careful!

I know who won this but gonna pull a total Ransei move anyway and reserve Wonder Guard Mega Audino.

Edit:
Introducing this strange anti-gar set!

Audino-Mega @ Safety Goggles
Ability: Wonder Guard
EVs: 248 HP / 12 Def / 248 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Heart Swap
- Psystrike/Substitute
- Recover
- Baton Pass

First of all I'd like to say that Gar has Spore but I'm a savage who loves putting Safety Goggles on the majority of my Mega Audino. At this point Safety Goggles is the go-to item to go against our current victim.

Assuming we know the Mega Gengar set is what it is and doesn't carry the rather rare Sludge Wave STAB, the only move Mega Gengar is hitting this Audino with is Secret Sword.

+2 252 SpA Mold Breaker Gengar-Mega Secret Sword vs. 248 HP / 12+ Def Audino-Mega: 167-197 (40.8 - 48.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Mega Audino takes a +2 Secret Sword just fine, enough for it to switch in at any time after Gengar sets up as long as Mega Audino has max HP. If it has more than 20% chip your switchin will have to be immediate but that's fine for taking care of the case as well.

Simply put what this Mega Audino does is it switches in front of Mega Gengar and waits for it to use Shell Smash if it already hasn't. After it has used Shell Smash it can Heart Swap all of Mega Gengar's stats and either Baton Pass it to one of your own Pokemon who could use a x2 Atk x2 SpA x2 Speed boost, or it can use a move that's able to take care of the Gengar right away. On the note that this set was built to deal with Mega Gengar any sort of filler slot made to take it down will work. Psystrike OHKOs the Mega Gengar after Heart Swap steals its Shell Smash boost.

+2 0 SpA Audino-Mega Psystrike vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar-Mega: 288-340 (110.3 - 130.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
It doesn't even need SpA investment.

If you don't like having to use an attack move to beat out Mega Gengar you can probably try to Substitute and Baton Pass into a Pokemon that'd benefit from it. Something especially along the likes of a Wonder Guard Gyarados or Ampharos could work wonders with this strategy from it and you'll be glad you managed to pull this off.

Just in case Mega Audino takes some excessive chip or overall damage in processes before or after dealing with Mega Gengar it has the option to use Recover and just sit around to be the Wonder Guard that it is. That is all for it in regards to moves.

This Mega Audino set is pretty straightforward but the EVs are strange. Here's my explanation:

We all understand Mega Audino wants to be as bulky as possible to deal with stronger threats who could break it. This is fine and it has the standard 248 HP to be able to manage most of this. However if our target is Mega Gengar, we Heart Swapped all of its stat boosts + drops, and we're trying to Baton Pass into the next Pokemon we would like for Mega Audino to outspeed Mega Gengar before either Baton Passing into something else or using Substitute to scout Gengar's next move. If we predict Mega Gengar is going to use Secret Sword after the first time (it's most likely going to do this because Mega Audino is immune to Spooky Plate Judgment), we can attempt switching into something like a Mega Mewtwo X, Mega Mewtwo Y, Mega Latios, or metagame threats like Primal Kyogre and Arceus who don't have to risk getting one shotted under the wrong prediction.

I am aware however that there can also be another issue which regards whether or not the Mega Gengar wants to try Shell Smashing again. The Psystrike set can immediately punish Mega Gengar who Shell Smash again and the Substitute set can Baton Pass into an even faster Pokemon to deal with the Mega Gengar afterwards. Because Mega Audino would be behind a sub by the time Mega Gengar attacks again, your Substitute breaks and you gain the momentum to Baton Pass into something that can simultaneously threaten Mega Gengar and sweep the opposing team. This seems like a tricky set to manage but Mega Gengar is gonna hate it.

Rayquaza as a check.

Rayquaza-Mega @ Safety Goggles / Lum Berry
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Def
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Ascent
- Roost
- Coverage
- Spikes / Pursuit

252 SpA Spooky Plate Gengar-Mega Judgment vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Rayquaza-Mega: 240-283 (58.1 - 68.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Rayquaza-Mega Dragon Ascent vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Gengar-Mega: 330-388 (126.4 - 148.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Fairly standard, variation of Aerliate ray but bulkier. Spikes is a more versatile punishment for Gengar switches, but also gets rid of MMX and other flying weak 'mons. Pursuit is pursuit and gets rid of the dang thing. Switches in to neutral Gengar if at full HP, even with rocks, and OHKOs with Dragon Ascent.

Kyurem-Black @ Safety Goggles
Ability: Refrigerate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Pursuit
- Fake Out
- Extreme Speed
- Filler

When it comes to this Gengar set, this is a fine check, but it can also be considered a soft counter. It easily lives unboosted Judgment and the weaker Secret Sword, so Gengar is forced to boost as Kyurem switches in. If it does, though, Gengar will immediately fall to Extreme Speed, which easily OHKOs. Pursuit can keep Gar at bay if you need that as well.

dramlamb wins with Yveltal :yveltal: and manu 11 comes in second place with Mega Gyarados :gyarados-mega:!

The next victim is yet another ghostly threat, but this time sneaking out of Gen 4:

:dp/giratina-origin:
Giratina-Origin @ Griseous Orb
Ability: Pure Power
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Shadow Sneak
- Dragon Claw
- Fire Fang
- Dragon Dance

Giratina is one of the defining offensive threats in DPP Hackmons due to its great STABs, ability to revenge kill several other key Pokemon with Shadow Sneak, and can muscle through Wonder Guards with Fire Fang.

Show me your checks and counters! Submission phase ends Monday 18th May!

Counter. Giratina can only flail as Fire Fang does pitiful damage and Dragon Pulse does loads in return. You can also go the safe route and just Spore bc its almost busted.

252 SpA Dialga Dragon Pulse vs. 248 HP / 252 SpD Giratina-Origin: 258-306 (51.2 - 60.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+1 252+ Atk Pure Power Giratina-Origin Fire Fang vs. 248 HP / 252 Def Dialga: 153-181 (37.9 - 44.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Impish Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Spikes
- Roost
- Meteor Mash/Whirlwind

Skarmory as a counter.

Skarmory's high natural defense associated with its steel type and flash fire allows it to completly stop Giartina-O. Will-o-Wisp helps to cripple Giratina-O and half its attack. Roost is for obvious recovery. Spikes to make it useful for the whole team as hazards are crazy good in gen 4. Meteor Mash is so that it isn't totally destroyed by Taunt. The 20% chance boost attack is nice too. Whirlwind is probably better but i just didn't want a taunt bait pokemon. This Skarmory also helps against most huge power pokemon using the Fake Out/Extreme Speed/Fire Fang combo and makes for a great physical wall in gen 4.

252+ Atk Griseous Orb Huge Power Giratina-Origin Dragon Claw vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 93-109 (27.8 - 32.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

+1 252+ Atk Griseous Orb Huge Power Giratina-Origin Dragon Claw vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 138-163 (41.3 - 48.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Entering the god, WG Relicanth

:dp/relicanth:
Relicanth @ Shed Shell / Grip Claw
Ability: Wonder Guard
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Impish Nature
- Clamp
- Spikes
- Recover
- Perish Song / Toxic

Holy shit the level of power you are looking at right now

252+ Atk Pure Power Giratina-Origin Fire Fang vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Relicanth: 22-26 (5.4 - 6.4%) -- possibly the worst move ever
+6 252+ Atk Pure Power Giratina-Origin Fire Fang vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Relicanth: 87-103 (21.5 - 25.5%) -- 1.1% chance to 4HKO
+6 252+ Atk Pure Power Giratina-Origin Fire Fang vs. -6 248 HP / 252+ Def Relicanth: 352-415 (87.3 - 102.9%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO

Ghosts can be trapped in Gen 4 so if they stay in like dumbasses Relicanth Clamps and Toxics them, and if Relicanth holds Grip Claw then Clamp will always last long enough to stall Giratina to death. If you're holding Shed Shell you want to use Perish Song instead because it only fails when Whirlpool lasts for 2 turns. Basically free win, also this has higher defense than Suicune wtf

EDIT: changed whirlpool to clamp cause apparently that has higher acc
EDIT 2: changed corsola to relicanth cause it's better but not as funny

IVs: 0 Spe

Alternate spread: Impish, max speed

252+ Atk Griseous Orb Pure Power Giratina-Origin Dragon Claw vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Heatran: 112-132 (29 - 34.1%) -- 99.6% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252+ Atk Griseous Orb Gastro Acided Giratina-Origin Dragon Claw vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Heatran: 84-99 (21.7 - 25.6%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
(orb boosted dragon claw is stronger than fire fang)

Switch in on a double or as they set up or attack. Gastro turn 2. Spam curse and recover until you get to +6. Potentially go for the sweep if they don't have a phasing move. Decent MU against mono dragon attackers like Latias and normal types like Regigigas/Slaking (EQ is a bad move otherwise). Giratina does have the item slot to run Shed Shell, as the other item I would've used is Haban Berry.

:DP/Bastiodon:
Bastiodon @ Mail
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Impish Nature
- Perish Song
- Spikes
- Slack Off
- Charm

The idea behind this set is to be able to switch in on physical attack sets and stall them out long enough for you Perish Song to KO them. The set has Perish Song and Slack Off, which are both needed for a set like this to work. Charm is used to prevent them from setting up with Dragon Dance or Swords Dance and overwhelming your defences. This is also useful because on the last turn of the Perish you are going to have to switch something else in that needs to be able to survive a hit. Spikes is a good option for the last spot because it allows you to be more useful to your team by laying down a thick layer of entry hazards that can wear down opposing teams. Other options for that spot could be Encore, which in DPP locks them into the move they just used for 4-8 turns, plenty of time for Perish Song or even enough time to bring in your own set up sweeper. Mail is useful because if you are able to switch Bastiodon in while your opponent is using Trick in conjuction with a choice item, you get to set a full layer of Spikes, lower their Attack to -6 and exhaust all of their Trick PP, forcing them to Struggle.

Introducing "Normal Wonder guard", you can use Regi, Slaking, Arceus, Miltank as every single one of them can do the same role which is ignoring both stabs, forcing gira-o to fire fang, willoing and recovering all that health back. WotL didn't say how many slashes we can have in one submissions so we have way too many different options you can mix and mega match to your heart's liking.
Proof lickygod can do the same as those guys:
